NEW GENERATION LEADERSHIP & WORKFORCE INSTITUTE
June 29, 2012, Miami Convention Center
Executive Director’s Message For the past eight years, UNIDAD of Miami Beach, Inc. has offered a unique and innovative youth development and leadership program aimed at providing inner city youth with the opportunity to reach higher, dream bigger, and work smarter while achieving life and career goals. The goal of the New Generation Leadership and Workforce Institute is to help prepare today’s youth to excel in tomorrow’s workforce and in their lives overall. This year, enrollment was so successful that a waiting list had to be developed. Of the 386 participants registered, 57 were chosen for Level I of the institute after an exhaustive selection process with trainers and counselors. These youth completed weeks of intensive workshops and training, demonstrating their commitment to the development of leadership skills and to their futures. While many high school students spent their summer at the beach, our graduates were hard at work developing skills and achieving goals. In 2013, 27 of those exhibiting the greatest leadership potential will participate in Level II of the Institute. Today, we celebrate the graduation of the 57 exceptional youth who have completed Level I of the New Generation Leadership and Workforce Institute. Join us in recognizing their achievements! During 2012-2013 we anticipate that hundreds more youth will participate in the program. Visit our website for program updates through the year at www.unidadmb.org. If you have suggestions for volunteer speakers, field trip experiences, funding sources, sponsors or other program resources, please contact: Ms. Margarita Cepeda at: mcepeda@unidadmb.org. Margarita Cepeda, Executive Director, UNIDAD OF Miami Beach, Inc
Matilde “Matti” Herrera Bower*, a Notable Example of Exemplary Leadership Mayor Matilde “Matti” Bower was first elected to the Miami Beach Commission in November 1999. She was elected as the first female and first Hispanic Mayor in 2007. It was just the latest in a long series of firsts for this tenacious community activist. Mayor Bower started out more than 30 years ago as a PTA mom, fighting to save an elementary school in danger of closing. She also joined the fight to save the historic Art Deco District in South Beach, which led her into yet another battle to help create decent affordable housing for the elderly and young families. Throughout her career, Mayor Bower has used her passion to empower all residents in this diverse community. As Mayor, she has expanded that mission to include protecting and promoting the economic vitality of Miami Beach, so that all can prosper together. She co-founded UNIDAD of Miami Beach, Inc. and was involved in giving a start to the New Generation Leadership and Workforce Institute. Mayor Matti Bower is always our honored guest, and a notable example of exemplary leadership. * Honorable Mayor Matilde Herrera Bower, MIAMI BEACH

Danya and Daniela Pelaez, Directors of We Are Here Foundation Inc. We Are Here Foundation, a non-profit organization, began after two sisters, Dayana and Daniela Pelaez, were on the brink of being deported from the United States by Immigration authorities. At the time Daniela was an 18 year old student with a grade point average of 6.72 and was North Miami High School’s Valedictorian. Their story caught the attention of the media across the country, as well as internationally. Thus began a national movement towards the legalization of outstanding students based We Are Here Foundation on their merits. As a result of their experience, the sisters decided to create We Are Here Foundation to be able to provide support and help to other teenagers with any kind of legal and/or economic assistance and most importantly emotional help, during the extensive and often arduous immigration process. We Are Here Foundation was formed to educate the immigrant student community in Florida and the rest of the nation about the legal rights of immigrants in the U.S. The organization raises funds to provide scholarships and grants, as well as legal and psychological support.
