InDesign and Photoshop and Illustrator, oh my!

Room 338 Alex Hauser Adobe has a lot of options when it comes to graphic design programs, from InDesign to Photoshop and Illustrator. Each one is unique, and they all do some pretty cool things. In this session, you will learn how each program works and how to choose which one to open first when you start a new project. You will also learn how these programs can work together to make your design more impressive and easier to create.

The power of descriptive writing Room 222 Chris Roberts Even in this social media savvy age, there’s nothing more powerful than using the written word to paint a picture for readers.

Learning the power of language and the importance of planting the reader in the front row remains the foundation of good writing.

Composition: Making good photos great Room 327 Dan Meissner Stop taking snapshots, and start making your pictures come to life. This class will help students better understand the rules of composition.

Room 338 Alex Hauser It’s time to get your hands dirty and start a design project. In this session, you will get to use Adobe’s design suite to create your own work of art. Learn cool techniques and shortcuts that will help you start designing the right way!

So you want to learn about radio?

Meet in Room 222 to walk to the Digital Media Center Stan Ingold This session will introduce students to the basics of radio and storytelling including sound, with a tour of the Digital Media Center and Alabama Public Radio.

Get them to talk Room 327 Anthony Cave Cave, a professional reporter, has tons of tips to help you come up with ways to talk to people, ask great questions and get the answers you need for any media.

Room 222 Becky Robinson Do you get tongue-tied talking to people? Are you afraid to approach someone you don’t know? In this session, you will learn some tips on interviewing that will result in more than “yes” and “no” answers.

Design concepts Room 338 Alex Hauser Now that you’ve seen the programs, it’s time to learn how to get from a blank screen to a finished project. In this session, you will learn how to set up different workspaces, how to use advanced tools that will make things easier and how to plan out a project. This session is beneficial to both beginner and advanced designers.

The music beat Room 341 Kinsey Haynes This reporter has covered more than 50 bands in the past two years and was chosen as a CMA Award of Merit finalist in 2014.

TRACK LEADERS Camp Director Meredith Cummings has more than 20 years of experience in print, web and multimedia reporting. She is president of the Society of Professional Journalists Alabama Professional Chapter, and advisor for the Capstone Association of Black Journalists. She is a member of the SPJ’s Journalism Education Committee. A newspaper, website and magazine reporter for 16 years before joining academia, Cummings currently blogs for al.com. She is the director of the National Elementary Schools Press Association, the Alabama Scholastic Press Association and the director of the Multicultural Journalism Workshop at The University of Alabama. In that capacity, she works with K-12 students around the state to help them start and improve broadcast, newspaper, magazine and multimedia journalism through training, workshops and a mentoring program for teachers.

Camp Co-Director Anna Waters is a thesis-track journalism master’s student and graduate assistant at The University of Alabama. She serves as the program assistant for both the Alabama Scholastic Press Association and the National Elementary Schools Press Association. While earning her bachelor’s degree in journalism, Waters worked as the visuals editor of The Crimson White, the independent student newspaper of The University of Alabama. She has also written for al.com and worked as the news editor for Dateline Alabama, a copy editor/designer for Tuscaloosa News, a designer for Mosaic Magazine and an advertising intern for Strategic Marketing Solutions, LLC in Dothan, Alabama. As part of her assistantship, she also leads multiple after-school journalism classes at several elementary schools in the Tuscaloosa area. In high school, Waters served as the editor-in-chief of her high school newspaper in Slocomb, Alabama.

The Maestro

Anthony Cave covers the city of Key West for the Florida Keys Keynoter and The Miami Herald.

He has written for The New York Times, Philadelphia Inquirer and Delta Sky Magazine. Cave, a 2011 Multicultural Journalism Workshop participant, is passionate about all things investigative journalism.

YEARBOOK

SPORTS JOURNALISM

Barbara Bateman, CJE, has been advising the Murphy High School yearbook, The Mohian, for the past five years. In addition, she teaches Introduction to Journalism, Broadcast and Photojournalism. Bateman is the 2015 Youth Journalism International Journalism Adviser of the Year, a 2013 ASNE Fellow and a 2006 National Writing Project Fellow. Bateman has presented at JEA Conventions in Washington D.C. and Denver.

She is also a member-at-large for the Alabama Scholastic Press Association serving the Mobile area.

Bleacher Report senior writer Lars Anderson spent 20 years at Sports Illustrated and is the author of six books, including “The Storm and the Tide,” a New York Times bestseller. He’s also currently an instructor of journalism at the University of Alabama and a contributor to the SEC Network.

TRACK LEADERS multimedia Casey Voyles is a journalism graduate student at the University of Alabama. She received her bachelor’s degree in journalism and political science in May 2015. Casey is originally from Georgia, but now calls Alabama home. She worked as the digital content director for Alpine Living Magazine, served as the managing editor of Dateline Alabama and has written for The Tuscaloosa News. During ASPA’s 2015 spring convention, she taught sessions that focused on multimedia opportunities for students. Casey also spent two consecutive years acting as the executive president of the Society of Professional Journalists and as a board member of the Student Executive Council for the College of Communication and Information Sciences.

Shemaiah Kenon is a junior majoring in journalism with a double minor in political science and German.

She is the youngest child and only girl in her family. Shemaiah is from Port Saint Lucie located on the eastern coast of southern Florida. She is currently employed as an event programmer for the University Programs Department of The University of Alabama. Shemaiah is fluent in English and German and enjoys watching German films. She loves to write, shop, watch sports and try out new recipes. Shemaiah aspires to pursue a career as a sports broadcaster for ESPN and a sports and entertainment lawyer.

After graduating from The University of Alabama, she plans to attend either USC Annenburg School of Communications and Journalism or UCLA School of Law.

NEWSPAPER Laura Owens is a graduate student at The University of Alabama, working on a master’s degree in education, concentrating on secondary English language arts. She graduated from Alabama in May 2012 with a degree in journalism and creative writing. As an undergraduate, she worked for The Crimson White, starting as a staff writer and working up to become a sports editor. She has also written and worked for The Associated Press, The Tuscaloosa News, The Charlotte Observer (Charlotte, N.C.), The Cullman Times (Cullman, Ala.), and The Post-Star (Glens Falls, N.Y.). Laura has primarily been a sports writer through her journalistic career, and while she is working on a degree in education, she still freelances for The Tuscaloosa News and The Associated Press, helping to cover high school and Alabama football.

Alex Hauser is a junior at The University of Alabama studying visual journalism and is an ASPA alumna.

She currently works with the Office of Information Technology at The University of Alabama as a graphic designer. When she’s not designing, she can be found playing with her puppy, Buzz Lightyear, and singing Disney songs.

TRACK LEADERS Broadcast Angela Raven Flowers is a graduate of Carroll High School in Ozark, Alabama and will attend Alabama State University in the fall. Angela has previously participated in The Long Weekend and was also a member of the Multicultural Journalism Workshop Class of 2013. Angela will major in mass communications with a concentration in radio, television and film production.

Katie Barnette is a senior at The University of Alabama from Charlotte, North Carolina. She is majoring in telecommunication and film with a minor in English. She says she loves broadcasting because she enjoys hearing and telling people’s stories. She says she also loves sports, and her future goal is to work for the Golf Channel.

CREATIVE WRITING Alicia Clavell is the founder, editor and publisher of Southern Women’s Review (www.

SouthernWomensReview.com), an online and limited-edition print journal. Clavell has been writing about life and style in the South for more than a decade — whether in the pages of Southern Living magazine or in her book, “Southern Kitchens and Dining Spaces,” published by Rockport/Quarry Press. She is also a former Hackney Literary Award winner and a two-time winner of The University of Alabama at Birmingham Barkesdale-Maynard Poetry Prize. Clavell currently serves as an instructor and freelance writer/consultant for magazines and online venues.

PHOTOGRAPHY Josh Hollis is a second-year master’s student in The University of Alabama’s Department of Telecommunication and Film. Using photography, design, video and the written word, he crafts and tells stories in his own way. In his free time, he enjoys reading about and watching bad movies and listening to comedy podcasts. He currently works as an intern at Alabama Public Radio.
