The much-anticipated fall festival will take place Saturday and Sunday, October 29 from 2 to 10 p.m. and October 30 from 1 to 9 p.m. Kinser Festival will have no shortage of food and drinks from local vendors as well as Bulldogs, Hickory House BBQ and Kanpai Lounge. As with all MCCS festivals, there will be plenty of game booths, prize giveaways and amusement rides. This one also features FREE live entertainment.

This year, singer and songwriter Daya is performing. She is best known for her platinumselling hit “Hide Away” and for being featured on one of the top songs of the summer, “Don’t Let Me Down” by The Chainsmokers. Daya will per-

Kinser Festival's entertainment lineup also features street performer Kenzi, traditional Okinawan musician Byron Jones and local pop act Natchy on Saturday. On Sunday, check out street performer Tamanchu Hiroto, classic rock band KLUSO, R&B singer Shanice, dance groups What’s up Akemi and T-Da, ska group All Japan Goith and variety band Basic Mode.

L.I.N.K.S. for Spouses

he military lifestyle isn’t always an easy one. Whether you’re new to the military or you’re a seasoned pro, register for the next L.I.N.K.S. for Spouses workshop.

L.I.N.K.S. (Lifestyle, Insights, Networking, Knowledge and Skills) is a FREE mentoring program for Marine family members taught by Marine spouses. The classes provide insight into the military lifestyle while giving family members a place to network and learn about available resources and tangible ways to thrive in the armed forces community.

Spouse session topics include an introduction to the Marine Corps, resources, pay day and money management, Personal Change of Station (PCS), deployments, getting involved, positive relationships and military career paths.

Japanese Denim

enim is the most American a fabric can get. But Japanese jeans are some of the most artisanal, with a pair of Japanese selvage jeans going for $200 for a pair of Nudies and up to $2,000 for handmade Momotaro Jeans that take up to a year to produce. Despite its short history (the first pair of Japanese denim, Big John M Series, was made in 1973), Japan quickly made a name for itself in the denim world.

Most jeans created on factory looms today generate a uniform and precise fabric every time, and lots of it.

A company called Toyoda first introduced more efficient looms to Japan in the 1960s. Toyoda changed their name to Toyota and went in a different direction (you may have heard of their vehicles), but Japan still uses those machines today. The old shuttle looms are descendants to looms from the 1920s

and only produce denim in limited amounts. These looms create rougher denim with more imperfections that lend character to the jeans—no two pair are alike. The denim eventually molds to the wearer, with the lines and fades of the jeans being unique to him or her.

Japan’s rich history of textile dyeing translates into their denim. One method is called hank dyeing. Dur-

ing the hank dyeing process, yarns are hand-dyed by a single artisan in a natural indigo dye that takes up to a year to produce. This process is only performed at Tokushima Prefecture and the process has been handed down from master to apprentice for hundreds of years. Only a handful of artisans remain, and the fabrics dyed using this process are only used in the most expensive jeans.

ot off the successes of her singles “Hide Away” and “Sit Still, Look Pretty,” timing has been all but perfect for the 17-year-old singer to burst onto the pop scene. Riding the waves of her chart-climbing lead singles and her hugely popular collaboration with dance duo The Chainsmokers, Daya has spent the last year performing across the US and recording her debut single, "Sit Still, Look Pretty"—all while finish-

ing up senior year of high school.

“I just want to be honest with my audience. I want to have a friendship with them.” Lyrically, the songs on her LP are relatable and down-to-earth, if nothing else. “I don’t want to be put on this pedestal or bowed down to or anything like that. We’re all human, we all make mistakes, we all go through things, and I want to be able to say that through my lyrics.”

The electronic and dance tracks

are rounded out by a soulful voice and lyrics well beyond her age, giving Sit Still, Look Pretty a picture of a fully realized artist. Daya’s mission for her music is clear: “I definitely wanted [empowerment] to be the main theme…being independent and not having to depend on someone else for happiness and finding that within yourself. I want to be my own person and go after my own dreams, goals and ambitions."

hallow breaths. Racing heart beat. Clammy hands. Goosebumps scaling your body. Tension rises as you wait for the next horror. You know it’s not real. You know it’s not. And yet, you can’t convince yourself entirely.

Haunted houses are a strange phenomenon. Why pay to feel scared?

What you’re really paying for is a test of your courage—fight to keep going with your eyes open, or flight and get the heck out of there. Even though you can’t convince yourselfcompletely, you know that there are no real consequences here. It’s a test without the repercussions.

This time, however, it won’t be as easy to escape. Your experience will cling to your mind and follow you home. The Single Marine Program’s haunted house is not for the faint of heart—it’s held at Camp Kinser’s mortuary. Yes, for real. The theme is Silent Hill, a favorite Japanese hor-

ror video game. If you don’t know it, do a Google search. That should be enough to convince you. You’ll begin with a brief history before you’re led through the haunted house by a “tour guide.” The rest of

the story you’ll have to wait to see.

There is a $5 entrance fee to support SMP. This haunted house is not recommended for small children.
