his year’s Hansen Festival is stacking up to be one of the best yet. The annual summer blowout will take place Saturday, September 5 and Sunday, September 6 from 2 to 10 p.m. on both days.

Just like all MCCS festivals, Hansen’s will have plenty of food, game booths, prize giveaways and amusement rides but the main attraction is the FREE live entertainment.

On September 5 (6 p.m.) and 6 (8 p.m.), see “America’s most patriotic rock band,” Madison Rising. Led by U.S. Navy and Marine Corps veteran, Dave Bray, Madison Rising is on a mission to honor the American spirit through rock & roll. Their latest album, “American Hero - R.E.D.” is dedicated to the men and women of the Armed Forces and first responders for their sacrifices and dedication.

On September 5 at 8 p.m., see platinum-selling rock band Shinedown. With a streak of nine

number one hits on the rock charts between 2005 and 2012 and their latest single, “Cut the Cord,” off their upcoming album Threat to Survival rocketing straight to number one, Shinedown is arguably one of the most successful rock bands of the past decade.

Hansen Festival is open to all DoD ID card holders and Japanese locals. FREE shuttle buses will provide transportation to and from designated parking lots on Camp Hansen (see page 9 for bus schedule). Please leave your pets at home. Do not bring any outside alcohol, bottles or coolers.

If you choose to drink, please do so responsibly.

On September 3, Tengan Castle on Camp Courtney will host Tengan’s Kids Got Talent from 5 to 9 p.m. Get ready for an evening of star power and delicious buffet food. Children of all ages can perform a talent of their choice and everyone goes home a winner. Come out and support talented young performers at this fun, family-oriented talent show.

In addition to the show, enter to win a FREE overnight stay for two at Moon Ocean Ginowan Hotel & Residence and toys from Mattel. Hansen’s Got Talent

S

ome people might not care that you can sing Por Ti Volare while riding a unicycle. Some may not be impressed by your death-defying underwater handcuff escape. Some people might even be disgusted by your sword swallowing ability. Don’t let the naysayers get you down; show them that your talent is special by participating in the annual Hansen’s Got Talent competition.

Your talent may have gotten you into trouble at your last dinner party, but it may also win you some great prizes. Winners will also have their name forever emblazoned on the Hanson’s Got Talent Hall of Fame Guitar. All singers, dancers, comics, magicians, sword swallowers or persons with any other talent

or “talent” are urged to entertain in this year’s competition.

Hansen’s Got Talent will take place on September 19 from 8 to 10 p.m. at The Palms on Camp Hansen. All acts are given three to five minutes to perform and musicians should bring their own equipment.

Karaoke equipment will be available.

This FREE competition is open to all DoD ID card holders ages 18 and older island-wide. If you aren’t ready to show off your skills, come scope out the competition and start practicing now to take home the grand prize next year.

Fans of the Japanese

ans, or uchiwa, both flat and folding, are a part of the Japanese cultural tradition. Although the earliest fans were found in Egypt (Tutankhamun’s tomb contained golden fans made with ostrich feathers), the accessory was likely introduced to Japan by the Chinese during the Nara Period (710–794).

Both men and women used the stiff and flat uchiwa. They were made of bamboo tines that numbered between 3 and 25. The frame was covered with paper and decorated with paint or calligraphy. Besides their obvious uses, uchiwa were used for ceremonial purposes. Warriors adapted the uchiwa as a standard. Iron fans bore family crests or other symbolic designs and were carried into battle.

The Japanese improved upon the design by creating the ōgi, or folding fan, in the Heian Period (794–1185).

For formal dress, these fans were

made of thin strips of hinoki (Japanese cypress) and tied with thread.

Different designs or the number of ribs could denote a person’s status, rank or profession. In court, the folding fans were called hiōgi. The Emperor and Empress still carry a fan in formal kimono during coronation and weddings. The management and employment of the fan became a highly regarded feminine art that wouldn’t be introduced to European aristocracy until much later when crusaders brought fans from the East.

Samurai carried jinsen, a version of fan that had iron ribs. Anime and

manga characters are depicted using these “iron fans” as weapons. Fans developed into an art form in the Edo Period (1690–1868) and were designed for use in entertainment: maiōgi are used in dance, chūkei in Nō theater, and Rikyū ōgi in the tea ceremony.

Today they are given as gifts or are even used as a tray to present a gift.

They serve as decorations, but may also be printed with maps and business information to serve as advertisements. The top of the handle of a fan symbolizes the beginning of life.

The ribs represent all the roads of life that lead to good fortune.
