hat better time of the year for one of the hottest festivals on the island? One of the most popular summer festivals that MCCS has to offer is almost here—Hansen Fest! MCCS will be hosting the Hansen Festival on Saturday, September 3 from 2 to 10 p.m. and Sunday, September 4 from 1 to 9 p.m.

This annual festival welcomes all service members, their families and Japanese to partake in a weekend of festival fun. Hansen Fest has festival favorites for all ages including Fun Land’s rides and bouncers, game booths and delicious cultural foods from Okinawa as well as new food offerings from MCCS. Starting this year, hungry revelers can enjoy USA staples such as sizzling Bulldogs Bites, succulent BBQ beef brisket and juicy chicken from Hickory

House All-American BBQ, Shisa Pizza Express pizza and wings, and, for patrons 18 years of age and older, refreshing beverages from Kanpai Lounge.

The festival will be filled with live entertainment. Indie rock group American Authors will perform at Hansen Fest on September 3 at 8:30 p.m. The quartet is best known for their song “Best Day of My Life” which was featured in a number of commercials, films and video games.

Their newest hit is “Go Big or Go Home,” off their latest album, What We Live For. Hansen Festival is open to everyone islandwide. FREE shuttle buses will provide transportation to and from designated parking lots on Camp Hansen. Please leave your pets at home.

on Affetto is a musical term; it’s a direction to play or sing with feeling or tenderness. Con Affetto the band, which will be entertaining audiences in MCCS Clubs throughout August, September and October, adds words such as excitement, sensuality, delight and inspiring to their performances. Through August 30,

Con Affetto will play from 8 to 11 p.m. on Thursday at the Kinser Surfside, and they will play from 9 p.m. to midnight on Friday at the BeachHead on Camp Schwab. On Saturday, Con Affetto will play from 8 to 11 p.m. at the Globe & Anchor inside Ocean Breeze on Camp Foster.

Their final August performance is

scheduled on Tuesday from 8 to 11 p.m. at The Palms on Camp Hansen.

Drinking Etiquette in Japan

ake (pronounced sah-kay) has long been an integral part of Japanese culture. Like other ancient cultures, the Japanese discovered early on how to produce the elixir from grain. It journeyed from a Shinto sacrament to a tonic for the elderly to a way to celebrate holidays for the general public.

When used responsibly, we associate alcohol with relaxed atmospheres of dinner and laughter, rosy-glass camaraderie. The same goes for Japan. However, because of sake’s history—its role in religious ceremonies and the symbolic pouring by geisha—there are still social protocols at play when partaking in the edifying mainstay. Now the rules are more lax, but ignoring them may still look impolite.

Make sure, especially if you’re the host, to pour others’ drinks first,

mainly guests’. If you do not want to keep drinking, just decline the refill.

If you are pouring the drinks, do so with both hands. If you’re the one receiving the drink, it’s polite to hold your cup with both hands while the drink is poured. If someone pours you a drink, attempt to do the same for them (you may be met with some resistance if you’re the guest).

As the party or izakaya eating continues, so will the drinking. Nondrinkers or light drinkers will need to be firm about limits. Sometimes Japanese pretend to be tipsier than they

truly are to keep from drinking more.

In Japan, this is because they are inclined to believe that drinking is a way to learn someone’s real character—one of the only times it’s acceptable to break from most formalities.

The most important rule is to make sure you understand and respect your limits and drink responsibly. Have a designated driver or call a taxi. If you have a drinking problem, self-refer to the Behavioral Health Substance Abuse Counseling Center by calling 098-970-3009.

e found your weekend plans. The famous salsa band Tromboranga is coming to Okinawa as part of their Salsa Tour 2016 on Sunday, August 28 at Koza Music Town Otoichiba. The group is so named for their ’60s and ’70s approach with forward trombones. The music is a fusion of the Caribbean and Europe and commonly played in salsa dancing

clubs and classes. If you know how to salsa dance, you probably know their music. If you want to explore salsa dancing, start with a bang—with one of the premier groups.

Tromboranga emerged onto the scene in 2011, and they completed a world tour last year. Lucky for us, this year they are making a pit stop in Okinawa before continuing on to Tokyo.
