umankind has devised many ways to cool off such as air conditioning and Popsicles, but nothing is as immediately refreshing as a dip in the pool. But there’s more to it than being cool. Here are the top five reasons to visit your local MCCS pool this summer: 1. Heart Health: Swimming is a great cardiovascular workout, keeping your heart strong. Although we are landlubbers by nature, we can adapt quickly to moving around in the water. MCCS Aquatics has a number of swim meets, races and aquathons to keep your cardio up. Just starting? Sign up for a swim class. 2. Building Muscle: Swimming is a full-body workout and will build a significant amount of muscle strength and endurance without adding stress to your joints. Adding some resistance to your legs by using fins is one way to increase the intensity.

3. Cross Training: Mixing some low-impact training with your higher-impact training will balance out your current regimen. Swimming may also relieve your sore muscles, enhance recovery and work smaller muscle groups which will prevent future injury. 4. Flexibility: It may be counterintuitive to summer weather, but spending some time in a heated pool can relax the muscles and increase flexibility while easing muscle soreness. 5. Social Outlet: Joining the Okinawa Dolphins Swim Team, the Masters Swim Team or a triathlon training group is a great way to meet new friends with common interests. Check out mccsokinawa.com/ swimteam for details. Visit mccsokinawa.com/aquatics or find us on Facebook for a full schedule and hours for all the MCCS pools on island.
