Back in Nova Scotia, Effie MacLellan learned a generations-old, family farmhouse recipe for biscuits (known as oatcakes) that she carried to her new home in Dorchester, Massachusetts. Effie’s daughter Joan, along with her longtime friend Irene, launched Effie’s Homemade to share the oatcake tradition with an eager public.

Katherine Reed and Josiah Mayo launched Chequessett Chocolate after a trip Costa Rica, where they encountered rustic chocolate making executed on an open air patio with a basic set of equipment and the simplest of ingredients.
