The fatalities from the JaipurAjmer highway accident have been rising. On Wednesday, three patients succumbed to their injuries, following two deaths on Tuesday. Meanwhile, five patients were
discharged -- three on December 23 and two on December 24.
On December 25, 22-year-old Vijeta, a resident of Pratapgarh, passed away at 4 a.m., followed by 36-year-old Vijendra from Bhuribaraj, Jaipur, who died at 9.30 a.m. Later, at around 1 p.m., 35-year-old Banshilal succumbed to his injuries. Vijeta and Vijendra had each suffered 70 per cent burns.
On December 24, two other victims lost their lives. They were identified as Naresh Babu from Etah, Uttar Pradesh, and Yusuf from Nuh, Haryana.
The tragic accident occurred near
DPS Bhankrota on Ajmer Road in Jaipur on December 20 resulting in devastating loss of life. Four people were burned alive at the scene, while eight others succumbed to their injuries the same day during treatment at Sawai Man Singh Hospital. Another person passed away later at Jaipuria Hospital.
The accident happened when a truck collided with an LPG tanker, and the leaking gas caught fire which spread across the highway. "The gas from the tanker spread on the road like a ball of fire.
win and 2-1 series lead
win after reducing India to 33/3 in the first session. But Jaiswal and Pant kept them at bay in the second session, as the old ball began to soften.
But in the final session of the gripping Test match, Pant fell to Travis Head and that opened the door for Australia to barge in as India collapsed from 121/3 to 155 all out. Captain Pat Cummins and Scott Boland picked three wickets in a terrific bowling performance from Australia, who now have a 2-1 lead in the five-match series, ahead of next week’s Test match in Sydney.
India will be disappointed as it was a game which they could have drawn, but have now ended up on the losing side. The shot selection of the batters in second innings to fall like a pack of cards along with failing form of their senior batters Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will come under scrutiny.
The inability to bowl out Australia’s lower order quickly and lack of bowling depth, especially with three all-rounders picked in, along with inability to seize crucial moments will come under scanner too for India as the final Test in Sydney now becomes a must-win affair for India to retain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
In the morning, India took only ten balls and conceded just six runs to wrap up Australia’s second innings on 234 in 83.4 overs. Jasprit Bumrah got his fifth wicket by sending Nathan Lyon's stumps flying with an inswinger sneaking through the gate. It also took Bumrah’s match figures to 9/156, with his tally of wickets in
this series standing at 30.
Chasing 340, India had an extremely watchful start as Australia’s bowlers beat them consistently with great deliveries. It meant Rohit Sharma and Jaiswal had to curb their runscoring shots, allowing Australia to settle into great rhythm.
Rohit’s first attempt in playing an aggressive shot caused his downfall – in a bid to whip off Cummins through the leg-side, he got a leading edge and was caught by gully on second attempt to be out for nine off 40 balls.
On last ball of the same over, Cummins bowled a back of the length ball which left KL Rahul in two minds and nicked behind to second slip for a five-ball duck. With Australia keeping a lid on the run-flow, Jaiswal and Kohli went into a shell.
They were also beaten while defending, but at the stroke of lunch, Kohli went for a big drive and was caught at first slip off Starc to be out for five off 29 balls. The post-lunch session began with Jaiswal playing back-toback controlled cut shots to take boundaries off Scott Boland, followed by hitting the same shot for a similar result in the pacer’s next over.
Pant also had a go at Boland by swiping across the line for four, before Jaiswal slashed Mitchell Starc for another boundary. A ball later, Starc’s nip-backer hit Jaiswal on the back pad and Australia went in for a review, only for the umpire’s call to save the batter, as replays showed the ball clipping just top of legstump.
Five-time Haryana CM, INLD supremo Om Prakash Chautala passes away
He had difficulty in breathing and was undergoing treatment in Medanta for the last three-four years.
On Friday, when his health suddenly deteriorated, he was brought to the emergency ward of Medanta but he suffered a cardiac arrest and could not be saved.
Abhay Singh Chautala is a former MLA from the Ellenabad constituency and has also been the Leader of Opposition in the Haryana Legislative Assembly from October 2014 till March 2019.
Chautala's great grandson Dushyant Chautala was the Deputy Chief Minister in the previous BJP-led government in Haryana.
Chuatala was released prematurely after the Delhi government in 2021 passed an
order granting a six-month special remission to those who have served nine-and-half years of their 10-year prison sentence.
Since the Indian National Lok Dal supremo had already served nine years and nine months of his sentence, he was eligible for release.
In 2013, Chautala and his son Ajay were sentenced to 10 years in prison after being found guilty of corruption in a teacher recruitment scam.
Special CBI judge Vinod Kumar had shown no leniency towards the 78-year-old Chautala and his 51-year-old son as he handed the punishment.
On January 16, 2013, the court had held father and son along with 53 others guilty of illegally recruiting 3,206 teachers in the state in 2000.

Sachdeva slams Kejriwal over ‘Purvanchali insult’ claims, calls it part of his ‘poisonous’ politics
New Delhi, Dec 21 (IANS) Delhi
BJP President Virendra Sachdeva accused AAP convenor Arvind Kejriwal of playing regional politics and spreading poison among the public. He was responding to the former Delhi chief minister’s allegation that the BJP insulted Purvanchalis. Speaking to IANS on this issue, Sachdeva said, "Kejriwal's comments about Purvanchalis are deeply offensive. It was Kejriwal
who had once said that Biharis, who come to Delhi with just Rs 500 to travel by bus and train, get free medical treatment worth lakhs and overcrowd Delhi’s hospitals. This is an insult to the people from Purvanchal. People from all states, including Purvanchal, Bengal, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Odisha live in Delhi. But Kejriwal is engaging in regional politics and spreading poison among the public because that is his nature."
Sachdeva also welcomed former AAP MLA Sukhbir Singh Dalal and Sardar Balbir Singh, a six-time member of the Delhi Gurdwara
TN government to distribute Pongal gift hampers five days before festival
Chennai, Dec 23 (IANS) The Tamil Nadu government will distribute tokens for collecting Pongal gift hampers five days ahead of the festival, Additional Chief Secretary J. Radhakrishnan said on Monday.
The Pongal festival, one of Tamil Nadu’s most significant celebrations, is scheduled for January 15 this year.
As part of the festivities, the state government provides gift hampers that include free dhotis, sarees, and cash for family cardholders across the state.
Last year, the Pongal gift hamper consisted of one kg of brown rice, one kg of sugar, a whole sugarcane, and Rs 1,000 in cash.
Public expectations for this year’s gift hamper are high, and Chief Minister M.K. Stalin is expected to make an official announcement soon.
Speaking to reporters, Additional Chief Secretary Radhakrishnan stated that efforts are underway to procure the materials required for the hampers, such as rice, sugar, and clothes.
The distribution process will begin five days before Pongal to ensure timely delivery. This
year’s monetary gift of Rs 1,000, accompanied by a package of 21 essential items for the festival, including rice, sugar, tamarind, and sugarcane, aims to reduce the financial burden on families, allowing them to celebrate without additional expenses.
In previous years, the distribution of Pongal hampers through ration shops faced criticism due to inefficiencies in reaching intended recipients.
To address this, the government is considering a shift to direct bank transfers for the cash component of the gift.
This method ensures that family heads receive the monetary gift directly in their active bank accounts, provided the accounts maintain a minimum balance. However, if challenges arise with bank transfers, the funds will be distributed through ration shops, as done traditionally.
To prevent overcrowding, the government plans to issue special tokens to ration cardholders.
The Tamil Nadu government has also ordered the production of 1.77 crore dhotis and an equal number of sarees for the 2025 Pongal festival.
The Handlooms, Handicrafts, Textiles, and Khadi Department has allocated Rs 100 crore for the procurement of yarn and payment of wages to weavers involved in this project.

Management Committee, who recently joined the BJP. He stated, "Both are educators. Sukhbir Singh Dalal has said that despite serving as an MLA for five years, he could not do much for the villages because the Kejriwal government is an enemy of rural areas. Sukhbir Badal seeks President’s Police medal for officer who saved his life
Chandigarh, Dec 23 (IANS)
Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Sukhbir Singh Badal on Monday recommended a President's Police medal for Punjab Police Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Jasbir Singh for "an act of exceptional and exemplary courage and selfless devotion to duty" at the entrance of the Golden Temple in Amritsar on December 2 when an assassination attempt was made on his life.
In a letter to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Sukhbir Singh Badal said, "It was only because of the blessings and grace of the
almighty that ASI Jasbir Singh happened to be present there that day."
"It was remarkable how Jasbir Singh displayed a rare courage and commitment to his duty and risked his life to safeguard the sanctity of Sikhism's most sacred shrine, Shri Harmandar Sahib, and to save my life," he added.
He said, "The prevention of the tragic sequence of events was nothing short of providential, especially as those bent upon vitiating the sanctity of the place and the atmosphere of peace and communal harmony in Punjab, seemed to enjoy the brazen patronage of the high and mighty in the state."
Joining the issue, SAD Lok Sabha MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal also wrote to Amit Shah, demanding a high-level judicial probe into the incident.
In addition to recommending
that Jasbir Singh's act of bravery on duty be acknowledged at the national level through an award of the President's Medal, she slammed Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and his government in Punjab for "issuing provocative justifications for acts amounting to killings of political rivals".
She said that minutes before the assassination attempt on Sukhbir Singh Badal's life, senior officers of the police were busy chatting about controversial figures who have a criminal track record.
She said in a statement that the assassination attempt was neither a stray incident nor was it an individual act by "a lone wolf".
It was a clearly sponsored, preplanned, pre-meditated act and a part of a deep-rooted conspiracy to weaken and eliminate the Sikh leadership, she added.

Payal Kapadia: Representation of women in media is one dimensional
Mumbai, Dec 23 (IANS) Filmmaker Payal Kapadia, whose film ‘All We Imagine as Light’ has been scooping critical acclaim, has shared her opinion on the representation of women in media.
The filmmaker said that the female representation in cinema and media is very one dimensional, and is often shaped by male gaze.
She said, “The representation of women in the media is so onedimensional, often shaped by a male gaze. Even in something as simple as waxing ads, women are portrayed without hair, which speaks to the unrealistic standards set by society. In my film, we wanted to step away from that and just be ourselves, authentic and true to how we are in everyday life”.
She further mentioned, “It’s about whose gaze is at the center of the narrative. For instance, when you see Anu in the city, everything looks romantic and picturesque. But when it’s Prabha, it’s just normal, because the lens changes everything”.
Payal Kapadia boasts of a Critics Choice Award nomination for Best Foreign Language Film and the historic Golden Globe nominations for Best Director in Motion Picture, making her the first-ever Indian woman nominated in this category. The film also won Best Film Not in the English Language from the Los Angeles Film Critics Association.
The film, which stars Kani Kusruti, Divya Prabha and Chhaya Kadam, explores themes of individuality, female friendships, and struggles against the male gaze and patriarchy. It is a powerful reflection of contemporary Indian cinema. This film is an official IndoFrench co-production between Petit Chaos from France and Chalk & Cheese and Another Birth from India. The film is being distributed in India by Spirit Media.
Earlier, Payal, who won the Grand Prix at the 77th Cannes Film Festival for ‘All We Imagine As Light’, lauded Chhaya Kadam. She said that the actress brings her own lyricism to the dialogues and improvises what’s written on paper to make it more sharp and better. Chhaya Kadam is a phenomenal performer, and boasts of a diverse filmography that cuts across the audience.
NE export gateway of India, its products can easily be exported to any country using Bangladesh’s Chittagong port: HM Shah
Agartala, Dec 21 (IANS) Union
Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday said that any products from northeast India can easily be exported to the rest of the world by using the Chittagong international port in Bangladesh.
Addressing the ‘North East Bankers' Conclave’ here, he said that the northeastern region is the export gateway of India.
from arrest.
Justice Singh-led Bench, on November 28, reserved its decision on Puja Khedkar’s anticipatory bail plea after hearing both sides. It was then clarified that till the judgment is delivered, the interim relief granted earlier to Puja Khedkar shielding her from arrest will continue.
Earlier, a court here had turned down her anticipatory bail plea and asked the investigating agency to find out if anyone from inside the UPSC had helped Khedkar.
"A few years back, the Indian government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi exchanged enclaves with Bangladesh leading to easier waterway communication with the Chittagong seaport of the neighbouring country. Transportation costs would be less if the products of the northeast were exported to other parts of the world using the Chittagong port," the Home Minister pointed out.
As per the Land Boundary Agreement (LBA) 1974 and Protocol of 2011, 51 erstwhile Bangladeshi enclaves in India
and 111 erstwhile Indian enclaves in Bangladesh were physically transferred to the other country with effect from the midnight of July 31, 2015.
The Home Minister said that for any kind of funding or providing advance in infrastructure, agriculture, MSME or even personal loan there should be different banking parameters with separate RBI guidelines for the northeast.
"There should not be the same banking parameters and RBI guidelines for the northeast region and other parts of the country. There are maximum potentialities in the northeastern region. Banks, financial institutions and others must consider the northeast otherwise for its economic and all-round development," he observed.
He said that a robust ecosystem for commerce and industries is being built in the northeast by strengthening the banking sectors.
As the Prime Minister has given maximum thrust for the development of the northeast, the PM himself visited the region 65 times and on his advice, Union Ministers visited the region over 700 times during the past 10 years, Amit Shah said.
Residents in Australia’s Victoria urged to evacuate as bushfire conditions worsen
Sydney, Dec 25 (IANS) Authorities of Australia's state of Victoria have issued an emergency warning to residents in the Grampians mountain range to evacuate as the bushfire conditions continue to worsen.
VicEmergency issued a fire warning on Wednesday afternoon to urge residents in Moyston and Pomonal, two towns in western Victoria, to leave immediately as the bushfire at Grampians National Park continues to burn.
"There is a bushfire at Grampians National Park, Yarram Gap Road that is not yet under control," said VicEmergency, adding that leaving immediately is the safest option before conditions become too dangerous.
VicEmergency also warned in a statement on Wednesday that bushfires burning across Victoria will create Extreme Fire conditions on Thursday, which
it describes as the worst across the state since Black Summer in 2019-2020.
If fire is rated as Extreme Fire Danger, it will spread quickly and be extremely dangerous.
It is predicted that hot and windy conditions will start early from 10 am on Thursday and continue through the day and night until at least Friday morning, Xinhua news agency reported.
The fire, which was sparked by lightning on December 16, has burnt through some 41,000 hectares of land as of Monday due to high temperatures and strong wind.
Communities and fire crews in Australia have been preparing for several days of extreme bushfire danger.
Several out of control fires continued to burn in the southeastern state of Victoria this week despite more favourable conditions for firefighters.
With temperatures forecast to exceed 40 degrees Celsius on Thursday, Victorians have been advised to brace for catastrophic fire conditions.
Residents of communities that
were evacuated over the weekend due to the threat posed by a major fire in the Grampians National Park, about 230 km west of Melbourne, were allowed to return to their homes for two hours on Tuesday morning to collect their belongings.
Four interstate firefighting task forces and two emergency management teams are expected to arrive in Victoria on Thursday to aid the hundreds of local firefighters who have been working to contain the Grampians blaze.
The Country Fire Authority had advised anyone who can avoid traveling through affected areas over the Christmas period to do so.
Elsewhere in Australia, several small bush and grass fires in the state of New South Wales have continued to burn but were under control.
In South Australia, residents of the outer-southern Adelaide suburb of Onkaparinga Hills were urged to leave on Monday evening as firefighters battled an out-ofcontrol bushfire. The emergency warning was downgraded on Monday night.
Australia: Manhunt underway after woman shot dead in Queensland
Sydney, Dec 23 (IANS) A police
is underway for two people after a woman was shot dead in Australia's state of Queensland.
The Queensland Police said in a statement on Sunday that they were called to a Railway Parade address at Caboolture, a town about 45 km north of Brisbane, at around 12.10 a.m. on Sunday, where they located the woman
unconscious and unresponsive. She was declared dead later, reports Xinhua news agency.
Initial investigations indicate the 23-year-old woman was assaulted by two males and sustained a gunshot wound outside the Railway Parade property.
Detectives believe this is not a random attack and have launched a homicide investigation.
A spree of shooting incidents has occurred in different parts of the nation this month, raising safety concerns.
Earlier on December 20, one man died, and two more were injured after a shooting in Melbourne, the capital city of Australia's state of Victoria.
Police officers were called to a property in Campbellfield, 15 km north of central Melbourne, at 10:10 p.m. local time following reports a man had been shot.
Upon arrival at the scene, officers found a 60-year-old man suffering from significant and life-threatening injuries.
He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he died.
Victoria Police said in a statement that two men, aged 22 and 20, are under police guard in hospital.

Australia delays decision on 2035 emissions target following Trump’s election victory
agency has said.
Matt Kean, chairman of the government's independent Climate Change Authority (CCA), on Sunday said that the global impact of Trump's election win would delay the agency's advice on a 2035 target by several months, Xinhua news agency reported.

Australia: Two dead after drowning in two separate incidents
Sydney, Dec 30 (IANS) Two men have died after falling in separate incidents at waterholes in the northeastern Australian state of Queensland.
The Queensland Police Service (QPS) said in a statement that emergency services responded to reports an 18-year-old man had fallen about 15 metres down an embankment of a river in Maudsland, 55 km south of Brisbane, at 6:40 p.m. local time on Sunday.
Paramedics rendered medical assistance but the QPS said the man succumbed to his injuries and was declared deceased at the scene, Xinhua news agency reported.
The Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) reported on Monday that the 18-year-old was using a rope swing from a rock embankment when he fell.
Hours earlier, a 55-year-old man died after he slipped and fell 30 metres from a waterfall in the Behana Gorge, over 1,300 km northwest of Brisbane.
The QPS said that emergency services were called to Clamshell Falls, a popular swimming hole in the gorge, at 1:30 p.m. after the man was reported missing in the water.
He was located about an hour later following a search and rescue operation.
"Medical assistance was rendered at the scene. However, the man was declared deceased," a police statement said.
The QPS said that both deaths are being treated as non-suspicious and that reports would be prepared for the coroner.
Earlier on Sunday, two people drowned at a notorious dangerous beach on Australia's southwest coast, police in Western Australia (WA) said.
Three people were swimming at Conspicuous Cliff Beach, 355 km south of the state capital of Perth, on Saturday when they became caught in a dangerous current at about 2:40 p.m. local time.
The trio were pulled unconscious from the water by members of the public before police officers arrived at the scene and commenced CPR.
A 44-year-old man and a 40-yearold woman could not be revived and were declared dead at the scene. A 42-year-old man was resuscitated and taken to a nearby hospital.
"All three adults are known to each other and were visiting from the Perth area," police said in a statement.
The beach is located on WA's south coast -- an area renowned for strong seas and large, unpredictable waves -- and is not patrolled by lifesavers.
Man dies after shark attack off Australia coast
Sydney, Dec 28 (IANS) A man has died after a shark attack off the Central Queensland coast in eastern Australia, local media reported on Saturday.
However, under Australian law, the government cannot set the 2035 target without advice from the CCA.
Kean told Nine Entertainment newspapers on Sunday that Trump's victory made it necessary to reassess and recalculate the assumptions that will inform the CCA's advice to the government.
"The election of Donald Trump, his statements on climate change and positions on energy policy are likely to have a global impact," he said.
The man in his 40s died after suffering life-threatening injuries to his neck in the shark bite incident in waters off Yeppoon, the second in Central Queensland within the past month.
A Queensland Police Service spokesman said the man had been fishing with family members when he was bitten by a shark.
The incident occurred about 4:37 p.m. on Saturday, Xinhua news agency reported quoting the Brisbane-based The Courier Mail daily newspaper.
The man suffered life-threatening injuries and succumbed just before 6 p.m., the police spokesman said.
There have been at least four other shark attacks in Australian waters so far this year, the newspaper reported, quoting the Australian Shark-Incident Database.
Earlier on July 23, a man was severely injured after a shark attacked him on the eastern coast of Australia.
Emergency service New South Wales (NSW) Ambulance reported that the response crew was called just after 11:00 a.m. local time to North Shore Beach at Port Macquarie, following reports of someone having been bitten by a shark.
"Paramedics assessed and treated a man in his 20s with a serious leg injury and transported him to Port Macquarie Base Hospital in a stable condition," the NSW Ambulance noted in a statement. Stretching over 10 km, North Shore Beach is located in the midnorth of New South Wales and lies more than 300 km north of the state capital, Sydney.
Following the incident, a local lifesaving agency and members of the public rendered assistance by using makeshift tourniquets.

Bangladesh seeks extradition of former PM Hasina, sends request to India
Dhaka, Dec 23 (IANS) The interim government in Bangladesh on Monday said that it has sent a diplomatic note to the Indian government, asking for extradition of the country's former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
A leading voice in the struggle to restore democracy in the country, Hasina, the daughter of Bangladesh's founder Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, had to flee the country in an ignominious manner and seek refuge in India on August 5, earlier this year.
Touhid Hossain, the interim government's Foreign Affairs Advisor, confirmed the latest development in Dhaka on Monday afternoon.
"We have informed India. We have conveyed our request for Sheikh Hasina's return for judicial purposes. This has been communicated through a note verbale (diplomatic note)," Hossain told local media.
Earlier in the day, the country's Home Affairs Advisor, Lt. Gen. (Retd.) Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury had said that his
ministry had written to Hossain's office to facilitate the return of the ousted Prime Minister from India.
"We have sent a letter to the foreign ministry regarding her extradition. The process is currently underway. They have an extradition agreement with us," Chowdhury was quoted as saying by the country's leading Bengali daily Prothom Alo.
Earlier this month, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri had travelled to Dhaka and held talks with his Bangladesh counterpart Md. Jashim Uddin and also called on Towhid Hossain and Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus.
The meetings took place as relations between the two countries had nosedived over the past few months with India being extremely concerned about the surge in extremist rhetoric, increasing incidents of violence, and provocations, especially against the Hindu community, in Bangladesh.
In September, External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar had also held a bilateral meeting with Hossain on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York which was the first high-level engagement between the two countries after Hasina's ouster in
August.
Hasina has also strongly condemned the "tortures" inflicted on common people, especially minorities, by the interim government.
"A top leader of the Sanatan religious community has been unjustly arrested, he must be released immediately," said the Bangladesh Awami League (AL) President after the arrest and jailing of Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari, a spokesperson of the Bangladesh Sammilit Sanatan Jagran Jote who is also associated with Iskcon Bangladesh.
"A temple has been burnt in Chittagong. Previously, mosques, shrines, churches, monasteries and houses of the Ahmadiyya community were attacked, vandalized and looted and set on fire. Religious freedom and security of life and property of people of all communities should be ensured," Hasina stated.
"After the killing of innumerable Awami League leaders and workers, students and members of the law and order forces, harassment is going on through assaults and arrests. I strongly condemn and protest against these anarchist activities," she had added.

Trump says may keep TikTok around ‘for a little while’
Washington, Dec 23 (IANS) US President-elect Donald Trump suggested that he may allow TikTok to continue operations in the United States.
At an event hosted by the conservative organisation Turning Point USA in Phoenix, Arizona, on Sunday, Trump said that the popular video-sharing app may have helped reach some key voters in the presidential election and expressed the possibility of keeping TikTok around "for a little while."
"We did go on TikTok, and we had a great response. We had billions and billions of views," said the president-elect, adding that he was shown a chart highlighting the views his campaign had received on the app.
On Wednesday, the US Supreme Court agreed to review a request from TikTok and its Chinese parent company, ByteDance, to block a law that would require the sale of the popular video-sharing app by January 19 or face a ban on national security grounds, reports
Xinhua news agency.
The nation's top court is set to hear arguments on January 10 regarding whether the law unconstitutionally limits freedom of speech, in breach of the First Amendment.
The court's ruling was issued two days after TikTok's petition for an injunction against the law. TikTok argued that the potential ban would shutter one of America's most popular speech platforms the day before a presidential inauguration and "silence the speech of Applicants and the many Americans who use the platform to communicate about politics, commerce, arts, and other matters of public concern."
In April, US President Joe Biden enacted the law that gives ByteDance only 270 days to sell TikTok, citing unfounded national security concerns. If the company fails to comply, the law will require app store operators such as Apple and Google to remove TikTok from their platforms.
In May, TikTok sued the US government to block the potential ban, which has drawn widespread criticism.
In early December, the US Court of Appeals in Washington dismissed TikTok's claim that the ban was unconstitutional.
South Korea formally becomes ‘super-aged’ society
Seoul, Dec 24 (IANS) South Korea has formally become a "super-aged" society as the share of its population aged 65 or over surpassed 20 per cent, the interior ministry said on Tuesday, as the country copes with a demographic crisis of a rapidly ageing population and low births.
As of Monday, the number of South Koreans aged 65 or older stood at 10.24 million, accounting for 20.0 per cent of the country's total population of 51.22 million, according to the ministry, Yonhap news agency reported.
The United Nations classifies countries where more than 7 per cent of the population is 65 or older as an ageing society, those
with over 14 per cent as an aged society, and those with more than 20 per cent as a super-aged society.
The age group in South Korea has gradually increased over the years, standing at 4.94 million in 2008.
It accounted for 10 per cent of the population in 2008 before surpassing 15 per cent in 2019 and reaching 19.05 per cent in January this year.
As of Monday, the number of women in the age group stood at 5.69 million, compared with 4.54 million men.
The age group accounted for 27.18 per cent of the population in South Jeolla Province -- the highest among the country's major regions. The central city of Sejong had the lowest share at 11.57 per cent.
The age group accounted for 19.41 per cent of the total population in Seoul.
Several Gulf countries impose visa ban on Pakistanis over their involvement in crime, fraud and begging
Islamabad, Dec 22 (IANS) The United Arab Emirates (UAE), Saudi Arabia and several other Gulf countries have imposed an indefinite ban on granting visas to people from at least 30 different cities of Pakistan, following an alarming rise in number of cases where Pakistani nationals have been caught begging or being
involved in smuggling, drug trafficking, human trafficking and other criminal offences abroad.
Gulf countries and cities, especially Dubai and Abu Dhabi, remain as the most preferred destinations for millions of Pakistani travellers and job seekers. However, following the ban and increasing visa
rejections, the already dented image of Pakistani passportranked fourth worst in the world for the third consecutive year - will suffer further irreparable damage.
The UAE has also made it mandatory for visa applicants from Pakistan to submit a police character certificate.
A prominent Pakistani YouTuber also acknowledged the difficulties being faced by travellers from the country after the Gulf countries stopped granting visas to Pakistani nationals.
"Saudi Arabia and Dubai were popular destinations but have now stopped giving visas. I too had to face a great difficulty
when I wanted to go for the IIFA Awards. In fact, Saudi Arabia has given a warning to Pakistan with regard to the increasing number of cases of beggars being caught," admitted noted podcaster Nadir Ali in his latest interview with a businessman who owns a large travel company in Karachi.
PM Modi’s visit to labour camp in Kuwait underscores government’s resolve for welfare of Indian workers abroad
Kuwait City, Dec 21 (IANS) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday interacted with a crosssection of Indian workers during his visit to a labour camp in Mina Abdullah area of Kuwait, his first official programme after arriving in the West Asian nation on a historic visit, earlier in the day. The labour camp has a workforce of around 1500 Indian nationals hailing from different states of India.
During the interaction, Prime Minister Modi enquired about the well-being of Indian workers and discussed various welfare schemes initiated by the Indian government over the past 10 years.
"The visit to the labour camp is symbolic of the importance attached by the Prime Minister to the welfare of Indian workers abroad. In the last few years, the government has undertaken several technology-based initiatives such as E-Migrate portal, MADAD portal and upgraded Pravasi Bharatiya Bima Yojana for the welfare of Indian workers abroad," said the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) after the visit.
The government led by PM Modi remains at the forefront in providing unwavering support to its nationals at times of their need and PM's visit to the camp on Saturday assumes significance, especially after the fire tragedy at a labour housing facility in the Mangaf area of Kuwait City in June this year which resulted
in deaths of dozens of Indian workers.
Within hours of assuming charge, Minister of State for External Affairs Kirtivardhan Singh was sent to Kuwait on the direction of Prime Minister Modi who was himself keeping track of rescue efforts on June 12 despite major political developments at home, including swearing-in ceremonies of governments in Andhra Pradesh and Odisha.
The Indian Embassy in Kuwait has been working in a mission mode since the tragic incident, constantly checking safety measures at the labour camps and places where Indian workers are staying.
This is, however, not the first instance of the PM meeting interacting with Indian workers abroad.
In 2016, PM Modi visited L&T workers' residential complex and the All Women IT and ITES Centre of Tata Consultancy Services in Saudi Arabia's Riyadh.
In the same year, PM Modi also visited the Indian workers' camp in Doha, Qatar.
Earlier in 2015, PM Modi visited a labour camp in Abu Dhabi where he highlighted India's concern for the welfare of its migrant workers. He interacted with Indian workers at their camps to know the problems they face and discussed ways the Indian government can help them.
At the same time, the government led by PM Modi has also been continuously working towards ensuring safe and legal migration.
Launched in 2014, the e-Migrate project facilitates emigration of Indians for employment purposes and mitigates the scope of malpractices. It also helps to
conduct recruitment processes in a hassle-free and transparent manner besides providing a comprehensive online database of Indian emigrants to all stakeholders, making the whole emigration cycle fast, transparent and efficient.
The e-Migrate system has been integrated with other services like Passport Seva Project for online validation of passport details and also with insurance agencies providing Pravasi Bharatiya Bima Yojna. DG Shipping system has also been integrated with the eMigrate system through which data about seafarers submitted to DG Shipping is sent through eMigrate to the Bureau of Immigration for processing emigration at Immigration Check Posts and airports, thus streamlining the emigration process.
The Overseas Employment and Protector General of Emigrants Division has also been strengthened, thus streamlining the process of emigration for individuals having ECR (Emigration Clearance Required category) passports going abroad for employment. As many as 16 offices of Protector General of Emigrants have been opened across India to facilitate the same.
The Pravasi Bharatiya Sahayata Kendra, which helps disseminate information about emigration and receive and redress complaints and grievances of migrant workers, has also been strengthened by the government while five regional centres have also been set up at Lucknow, Hyderabad, Chennai, Patna and Kochi assisting emigrants requiring face-to-face interaction for redressal of their grievances and queries.
PM Modi meets 101-year-old former IFS officer, gets a rousing welcome in Kuwait
Kuwait City, Dec 21 (IANS) The Indian community gave a rousing reception to Prime Minister Narendra Modi as he arrived at his hotel in Kuwait City on Saturday afternoon, shortly after he touched down in the Gulf nation, kicking off his historic two-day visit, the first by an Indian PM to the country in 43 years.
Among those who met Prime Minister Modi warmly was 101-year-old Mangal Sain Handa, a former Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer, who now resides in Kuwait and had served in Kuwait, United Kingdom, Iraq, China, Argentina, and Cambodia before
retiring about four decades ago.
PM Modi not only exchanged greetings with Handa but also posed for photos with his family.
"Delighted to have met Shri Mangal Sain Handa Ji in Kuwait this afternoon. I admire his contribution to India and his passion for India's development," the Prime Minister posted on X.
On Friday, Handa's granddaughter, Shreya Juneja had posted a message for PM Modi, requesting him to meet her grandfather during his visit to Kuwait.
On Saturday, just before he boarded Air India One, Prime Minister Modi, who enjoys a massive following not just in the country but also all over the world and loves to give a personal touch to his engagement with the Indian diaspora during foreign visits, responded to Juneja's social media post.

Trump extends Christmas greetings to ‘Governor Justin Trudeau of Canada’
Washington, Dec 26 (IANS) US
President-elect Donald Trump shared a series of Christmas greetings on his social media platform, Truth Social, which included his "Governor" joke on Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and suggested that Canada could become the 51st state of America.
Trump's post reiterated his "Governor" jibe, claiming that if Canada were to become the 51st state of the United States, "their Taxes would be cut by more than 60 per cent, their businesses would immediately double in size, and they would be militarily protected like no other Country anywhere in the World."
He further suggested that National Hockey League (NHL) legend Wayne Gretzky should lead the nation.
This comes after Trump's recent viral comment, in which he referred to Trudeau as the
"Governor of the Great State of Canada" following their dinner meeting.
On Truth Social, Trump had wrote, "It was a pleasure to have dinner the other night with Governor Justin Trudeau of the Great State of Canada. I look forward to seeing the Governor again soon so that we may continue our in-depth talks on tariffs and trade, the results of which will be truly spectacular for all!"
The remark sparked widespread amusement and debate, with many questioning whether it was a deliberate insult.
He also criticised "radical left lunatics."
Expanding his controversial comments, Trump issued veiled threats regarding US control over the Panama Canal, stating, "Merry Christmas to all, including to the wonderful soldiers of China, who are lovingly, but illegally, operating the Panama Canal (where we lost 38,000 people in its building 110 years ago), always making certain that the United States puts in Billions of Dollars in 'repair' money, but will have absolutely nothing to say about 'anything.'"

The quiet architect of India’s transformation A wake-up call for financial institutions
The news of Dr. Manmohan
Singh's passing on December 26, 2024, casts a shadow over the nation, leaving behind a profound silence. At 92, the man who transformed India’s economic landscape is no longer with us, but his legacy is etched deeply into the fabric of this country. His passing signifies the close of a significant era, one characterized by steadfast strength, remarkable intellect, and a steadfast dedication to the principles of progress and integrity. As India mourns the loss of a beloved leader, it is impossible to ignore the monumental impact this humble economist had on the country’s journey.
Dr. Singh was born on September 26, 1932, in Gah, Punjab (now part of Pakistan), and his formative years were profoundly influenced by the hardships of Partition. Forced to leave his home in the midst of unimaginable violence, the young boy from a modest family found solace in books. It was through education that he began to carve a path that would not only shape his future but that of an entire nation. His academic excellence was striking—first in Punjab University, then in Cambridge, and finally at Oxford. It was here, among the greatest minds of his time, that Dr. Singh developed his deep understanding of economics, a subject he would later use as a tool to elevate millions of lives in India.
But Dr. Singh’s true test came not in the lecture halls of Cambridge or Oxford but in the very heart of India’s political and economic struggles. As India faced its most severe economic crisis in 1991, it was a man known more for his scholarly approach than his political ambitions who took the reins. When the country’s economy teetered on the edge of collapse, it was Dr. Singh, appointed as Finance Minister, who played the pivotal role in steering India away from the precipice. The reforms he introduced in 1991 were nothing short of revolutionary. In the face of severe opposition, Dr. Singh dismantled decades of protectionist policies, opened India to the world, and breathed new life into an economy choked by outdated regulations. His decisions were courageous— some might say they were radical—but they were driven by a singular vision: to transform India into a thriving, competitive economy. His reforms freed
Indian businesses from the shackles of the “license raj,” deregulated industries, and welcomed foreign investment. This was no easy feat. Many feared the unknown, but Dr. Singh pressed on, guided not by the allure of short-term gains but by a steadfast belief in long-term prosperity.
But his journey did not end with those first steps in economic reform. Dr. Singh’s ascension to the role of Prime Minister in 2004 placed him at the helm of a nation ready for change, though still deeply divided in many ways. Over the next decade, he proved to be a leader whose strength lay not in grand speeches or fiery rhetoric, but in his steady hand and unwavering principles. Under his leadership, India continued to grow, but it was not just economic growth that defined his tenure—it was his moral compass, the way he prioritized inclusivity, transparency, and long-term welfare.
The Right to Information (RTI) Act of 2005 is one of Dr. Singh’s many legacies that will be remembered for its historical importance. With this legislation, he sought to break down the walls of opacity that had long shielded government decisions from public scrutiny. It was an audacious move in a country where corruption often thrived in the shadows. By making government processes more transparent, Dr. Singh gave power to the people, allowing them to hold their leaders accountable. It was a small but significant step towards a more democratic India.
Then came the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), a testament to Dr. Singh’s unwavering belief in social justice.
As millions of Indians in rural areas struggled with unemployment and poverty, Dr. Singh’s government rolled out MGNREGA, offering guaranteed employment to the rural poor. This was not just an economic policy—it was a lifeline to millions who had long been forgotten in the bustling cities. It embodied Dr. Singh’s vision of a nation where no one, no matter how marginalized, was left behind. Yet, for all his achievements, Dr. Singh’s leadership was often clouded by controversy. His critics, especially in the
later years of his tenure, painted him as a figurehead, someone who allowed others in his party to make the hard decisions. The 2G spectrum scam, the Commonwealth Games debacle, and the coal allocation scandal all brought his government under intense scrutiny. But even amidst these controversies, Dr. Singh’s leadership remained dignified and steady. He never sought the limelight, preferring to remain in the background, silently navigating the challenges of coalition politics and steering the country through the turbulence.
Undoubtedly, one of the most challenging moments of Dr. Singh’s tenure related to the Indo-US Civil Nuclear Agreement of 2008. It was a defining moment in India’s foreign policy, one that showcased Dr. Singh’s diplomatic acumen. In the face of international skepticism, he secured a deal that would not only boost India’s energy security but also elevate its standing on the global stage. This deal was a testament to Dr. Singh’s quiet yet powerful influence—an economist with the vision of a global statesman. As the years passed, Dr. Singh’s approach to leadership became increasingly rare. In an era where political discourse is often dominated by polarization and populism, Dr. Singh’s style stood in stark contrast. His leadership was one of patience, humility, and a deep-seated belief in the power of governance to shape a better future. He did not revel in the glory of power; rather, he used it as a tool for change, one that would create a lasting impact on the lives of India’s citizens.
The political landscape Dr. Singh helped shape has evolved significantly since his retirement in 2014. In today’s India, where aggressive rhetoric and sharp divides dominate, the steady, reasoned leadership that Dr. Singh embodied feels like a distant memory. His focus on inclusive growth and welfare often seems overshadowed by the pull of short-term political gains. Yet, the foundation that he laid—the economic reforms, the push for transparency, the focus on rural development—remains strong. India’s economy, now one of the world’s largest, is a testament to his vision.
The Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) filing a lawsuit against HSBC Australia is more than just another legal battle in the financial sector. It is a moment of reckoning for an industry increasingly under scrutiny for its role in safeguarding customer assets. Alleging systemic failures in fraud prevention, ASIC’s move has brought into focus the significant responsibilities that financial institutions shoulder in protecting their customers from the scourge of scams.
For HSBC, the accusations are damning. ASIC claims the bank failed to implement adequate measures to prevent fraudulent activities, resulting in approximately $23 million in customer losses over four years.
The lawsuit highlights 950 reports of unauthorized transactions that HSBC allegedly failed to address effectively. Such a lapse, whether due to negligence, outdated systems, or lack of prioritization, is a breach of the trust that underpins the relationship between financial institutions and their customers.
What makes this case especially significant is its timing. The digital age has brought with it a proliferation of sophisticated scams and fraudulent schemes, targeting individuals and businesses alike. From phishing emails to elaborate social engineering tactics, scammers are relentless, exploiting every loophole to deceive unsuspecting victims. Banks, as custodians of their customers’ financial wellbeing, are expected to be the first line of defense. When they falter, as HSBC is alleged to have done, the consequences are not just financial but deeply personal, eroding customer confidence and inflicting emotional distress on victims.
ASIC’s lawsuit against HSBC is not an isolated event. It is part of a broader effort by regulators worldwide to hold financial institutions accountable for their role in combating fraud. This legal action sends a clear message: institutions cannot afford to be reactive in their approach to scam prevention. Proactivity, robust systems, and constant innovation in fraud detection technologies are non-negotiable. The banking sector must recognize that its responsibilities extend beyond
facilitating transactions and managing investments—it has a duty to protect.
HSBC’s response, emphasizing cooperation with ASIC and a commitment to improving fraud prevention systems, is a step in the right direction, but it raises questions about why these measures were not already in place. With its vast resources and global reach, HSBC is better positioned than most to lead in the fight against scams. Yet, the allegations suggest a gap between its potential and its actual performance in safeguarding customers.
This case also exposes weaknesses in the regulatory framework. While ASIC’s lawsuit is commendable, it reflects the reactive nature of many regulatory bodies that often step in after significant damage has been done. Regulators must adopt a more proactive stance, ensuring that financial institutions adhere to stringent fraud prevention standards before crises occur. Regular audits, stricter compliance checks, and penalties for non-compliance should become the norm rather than the exception.
One of the most troubling aspects of this case is the human cost of HSBC’s alleged failures. The $23 million in losses is not just a statistic; it represents shattered trust, disrupted lives, and financial hardship for countless individuals. For many victims, the financial loss is accompanied by feelings of violation and helplessness, knowing their hardearned money was stolen while the institution they trusted was unable—or unwilling—to protect them. This breach of trust is not easily repaired and has long-term implications for customer loyalty and confidence in the banking system.
The HSBC lawsuit also highlights the growing importance of technological innovation in the fight against financial fraud. Traditional methods of fraud detection are no longer sufficient in an era where cybercriminals use advanced techniques to exploit vulnerabilities. Banks must invest in cutting-edge technologies, including artificial intelligence and machine learning, to identify and counter scams in real-time. These tools can analyze vast amounts of data to detect unusual patterns, flagging potential fraudulent activities before they impact customers.
However, technology alone is not enough. A culture of accountability and vigilance must be ingrained at every level of the organization. Employees need regular training to recognize and respond to emerging threats, and customer education should be a Continued on Next page...
The Third Eye: Ensuring an efficient governance
New Delhi, Dec 22 (IANS) It is heartening to note that the Centre is actively engaged -- primarily through the Economic Advisory Council of the Prime Minister -- in examining the matters that came in the way of an efficient public-oriented ‘delivery’ by the government machinery.
A general definition of ‘efficiency’ applicable to all situations is that it is ‘a measure of productivity per unit of resource -- money, manpower or time’. Consequently, any step that makes a process cost-effective without adversely impacting the output, will also add to its efficiency. ‘Ease of doing business’ has rightly been made a testing ground for scrutinising the performance of those who manned the Ministries at decision-making levels. Bureaucratisation is being addressed by eliminating obscure and obsolete laws and rules, revising timelines for implementation and redefining accountability at different steps of the hierarchy.
There is so much to do in this regard and the government has to be complimented for launching the move. Finding ways and means of reforming governance is a ‘task’ that had to be assigned to competent people with the needed experience and interest -- like those who hold responsible positions in highly empowered bodies like Niti Ayog and Economic Advisory Council and had an inside view of the governance. The traditional practice was to
constitute an Administrative Reforms Commission which -- judging from the past -- used its autonomy only to take its own time in producing volumes of reports that were full of generalities. ARCs made few points of identified deficiencies and seldom spelt out practical ways of resolving them. The importance of both ‘structure’ and ‘process’ reforms has attracted greater notice ever since Donald Trump, Presidentelect in the US, announced that Elon Musk would oversee a Government Efficiency Commission to bring about improvement in the governance of the democratic state.
Three things have to happen in India for the governance to get an upgrade in terms of the service it provides to the people -ensuring quick implementation of decisions made, putting in place built-in systemic checks against delays in ‘delivery’ caused by inefficiency or neglect and taking effective measures to eradicate corruption. To set the right environ, it was necessary to discard laws and rules that had lost their relevance because they essentially catered to the colonial set-up or became totally redundant on account of the world shifting to a new age of communications and refinement of legal obligations. There was a need for a thorough review of the institutional entities within the government and ‘autonomous’ bodies existing under the umbrella of the Centre, to judge
their contemporary utility and purpose and make the required changes by way of closure, organisational restructuring and merger. Also, it is the acceleration of ‘digitisation’ that has become the universal call for reform in governance -- especially needed by an advancing economic power like India. Fortunately, the present regime is making brisk progress in this direction. Online work -- with due regard to security -- has proved to be a great instrument of efficiency, cost-effectiveness brought about through saving time and manpower as a ‘resource’ and operational learning for knowledge enhancement.
Participating in a media event recently, Sanjeev Sanyal member of the Economic Advisory Council of the Prime Minister, highlighted the ‘nuts & bolts’ reforms being carried out to make for efficient governance. He drew a line between ‘structural’ and ‘process’ reforms and explained how the latter were being prioritised -- ranging from discarding of many colonialera laws like Labelling laws and the Weights and Measures Act to the winding up of defunct organisations that were allowed to keep going as ‘autonomous’ bodies even when they served no purpose in particular. He stated that online processing of matters requiring clearance from multiple Ministries in a time-bound fashion was already adding to the ease of doing business.
The massive bureaucratisation in India has always been a challenge to the speedy delivery of project work and the attention being given by the Modi government to the much-needed reforms in governance would be deeply appreciated by informed citizens. The call for ‘Digital India’ was timely indeed and it has already helped the forward march of the Indian economy in a highly competitive world and also ensured that India was able to function as a welfare state as well because of ‘direct transfer’ of monetary assistance to the needy. Digitisation will help to actualise the concept of ‘minimum government
maximum governance’ which implies that we must move towards a slim bureaucracy where the empowerment and accountability of each member of the administrative hierarchy would be clearly defined.
At the macro level the idea of ‘process reforms’ looks great and hopefully the results will start showing up, soon enough. The objective of reforms is to make bureaucracy peopleoriented, less corruptible and performance-driven -- this will require a strong system of supervision in which any serious failure or dereliction of duty at any level is to an extent blamed on the immediate supervisor too. This should apply right up to the top of the hierarchy. There was earlier a noticeable trend of senior officers of All India Civil Services -- who largely head the administrative machinery in the Centre’s Ministries and in the States -- shirking from making crucial decisions and developing an unhealthy dependence on their political masters in this regard. The tendency to wait for ‘a nod from the above’ passes down the line with the result that the wisdom accruing from an objective examination of the pros and cons of a project is denied to the decision-makers. Political executive changes now and then but the bureaucracy is there all the time and it is expected to do what was in the best interests of the democratic nation.
In the Indian context, the political executive at the Centre does not bring its own administrative heads to assume power -- unlike what happens in the US -- and this allows for a distinction to be made between those who run the regime and those who take care of the machinery of the government for implementing policies framed by the former. Process reforms therefore need not be impeded by the political complexion of the ruling dispensation -- in reality though, politics did influence bureaucracy in setting the direction of ‘reforms’ and fixing priorities. In the Modi regime, the initiative for reforms that made the governance service-oriented has come from the Prime Minister
himself.
There is no gainsaying the fact that in a democracy the nonelected bureaucracy can often decide the fate of the elected leadership as people might evaluate the latter on the basis of what the administration brought to their table. Policies may have been framed with the best of intentions but it is the manner of their execution that would attract or disappoint the people affected by them. Good governance, therefore, entails a role for the political executive in ensuring that its decisions are promptly and correctly implemented.
It has to be mentioned that while ‘ease of doing business’ was guaranteed by the government of the day, the success of a corporate body in the highly competitive world of our times, depended a great deal also on its capacity to see the ‘opportunities and risks’ lying ahead in the concerned areas. These would be indicated by business intelligence and that is the reason why leading businesses invest in processing all information of intelligence value available within and outside of the organisation. Also, citizens of a democratic state must have an idea of what threats -- external or internal -- faced the nation and they should be willing to contribute their mite to the handling of the same. This will happen provided the style of governance of the existing regime convinced them that the latter was totally committed to the safeguarding of national interests in all spheres. In this backdrop, a well-informed society would add to the ease of doing business. The machinery of the government would do credit to the regime if it was efficient, sensitive to the people’s needs and known for an image of uprightness, impartiality and firmness. All reforms should aim at achieving this. A regime that upholds nationalism, promotes unity without distinction of caste and creed and follows the principle of equality before the law, gets due recognition from the people and adds to the incentives and morale of the businesses, too.

priority. Banks must empower their customers with knowledge about common scams and best practices for safeguarding their finances.
ASIC’s legal action against HSBC is also a reminder of the collective responsibility in addressing financial fraud. While banks are at the forefront of this battle, governments, regulators, and consumers all have roles to play. Policymakers must ensure that legal frameworks are
robust enough to deter fraud and hold perpetrators accountable.
Regulators like ASIC must continue to be vigilant, stepping in not just to penalize but also to guide institutions toward better practices. Consumers, too, must stay informed and vigilant, recognizing that the fight against fraud is a shared endeavour.
The broader implications of this case extend beyond HSBC and Australia. It serves as a cautionary tale for financial institutions globally, highlighting the risks of complacency in fraud prevention.
The reputational damage to HSBC, regardless of the lawsuit’s outcome, is significant and should serve as a wake-up call for other banks. Trust is the currency of the financial sector, and once lost, it is difficult to regain.
This lawsuit also raises critical questions about the balance between innovation and responsibility in the banking industry. As banks embrace digital transformation to enhance customer experience, they must ensure that security measures evolve in tandem. Innovation
should never come at the cost of customer safety. Instead, it should be a means to strengthen defenses against fraud, ensuring that technological advancements benefit both the institution and its customers.
The outcome of ASIC’s lawsuit against HSBC will be closely watched, not just for the penalties it might impose but for the precedent it sets. A strong ruling in favor of ASIC could compel other financial institutions to reevaluate their fraud prevention strategies, prioritizing customer
protection as a core aspect of their operations. It could also encourage other regulators to adopt a more aggressive stance in holding institutions accountable. As the financial sector grapples with the challenges of a rapidly changing landscape, the HSBC case serves as a stark reminder of the stakes involved. Customer trust is the foundation of the industry, and protecting that trust must be the top priority. Anything less is a betrayal of the very principles upon which banking is built.

Hackers steal over $12.7 billion in over 1,000 crypto heists to date
New Delhi, Dec 23 (IANS) Crypto criminals have stolen over $1.71 billion worth of cryptos this year, pushing total thefts to shocking levels at $12.7 billion across more than 1,000 heists to date, data showed on Monday.
The high value and anonymity of cryptocurrencies make them a magnet for criminals, helping the total value of criminal crypto transactions to hit shocking highs, according to the report by CryptoPresales.com.
In five of the past 10 years, including 2024, hackers have stolen over $1 billion annually, proving the ongoing struggle for law enforcement and regulators to control these crimes, as per Comparitech data.
Over the past decade, the total number of crypto heists skyrocketed 15 times, going from only 12 hacks reported in 2014 to 176 this year.
The difference is even bigger compared to 283 heists reported in 2023, the highest number the crypto space has ever seen.
Although the annual number of crypto heists significantly dropped, the 10-year total is still shocking. Since 2014, criminals performed 1,008 crypto heists, costing the industry over $12.7 billion, said the report.
As per data, most of these losses, or over 75 per cent, occurred in the last four years, with 2022 and 2023 holding the record.
Statistics also showed that the most common crypto crimes include exploits, hacks, and flash loan attacks, which account for over 65 per cent of all reported heists.
“So far, there have been 395 exploits, 271 hacks targeting

The celebration was attended by more than 100 AAQ members, including children and their parents, and made the event a grand success.
As the tradition goes, Telugu people go on a picnic with their loved ones in the lunar month of Kartika Masam. ‘Vana’ in Sanskrit and in Telugu literally translates as Forest or Grove and ‘Bhojanam’ is food; thus, it implies having food in a forest or a grove, in other words, a picnic.
Karthika Masam is an important month in the Hindu calendar, typically falling between midNovember and mid-December.
It is considered especially auspicious in Southern India. The month is dedicated to Lord Shiva, and it is believed that worshiping during Karthika Masam brings blessings of prosperity, health, and peace.
Vana Bojanalu aka Garden Lunch is a traditional practice observed by many devotees during Karthika Masam, particularly in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. It involves a group of people (often women) going to the forest or a natural setting to perform a simple ritual of offering prayers and having a meal, typically vegetarian, in the outdoors. The practice is considered to be a way of connecting with nature and expressing gratitude for the bounty provided by the earth. Regarding its spiritual
significance, Vana Bojanalu is believed to be a way to seek blessings from nature and gods. The act of offering prayers in a serene, natural setting is thought to enhance spiritual growth, cleanse the mind, and purify one's surroundings. This tradition is often linked to the belief that nature is a divine entity that nurtures life. AAQ’s Spiritual Coordinator Sudha Velamuri performed the auspicious pooja(prayer) and lit the lamp in front of the GooseBerry Tree as is the tradition.
During Vana Bojanalu, a special meal is prepared and shared with the community. The meal usually consists of simple vegetarian food such as rice, lentils, vegetables, and fruits, symbolizing humility and gratitude. The food is offered
to Lord Shiva, and it is consumed in the presence of nature to foster a sense of community and harmony. All the members brought special dishes which were delectable and delicious.
Vana Bojanalu is a celebration of togetherness, culture, and devotion. It is not just a religious ritual but also a social event where families and communities bond over shared food and prayers.
Various games were held for children, men and women, and prizes were distributed to winners. AAQ president Uma Chilukoti and vice president RamJunnuri thanked all the members in their attempt to participate and keep the Andhra tradition alive.
Apart from the community bonding that it results in, research shows that spending time with nature enhances health by reducing stress. Such is the wisdom of our ancestors that they even thought of a picnic as an essential social ritual of life. All the members also thanked the AAQ EC team for organizing the day which also established bonding with new members in Brisbane besides fun and relaxation.
Importantly, Karthika Masam and Vana Bojanalu are deeply rooted in Indian traditions, blending spirituality, community bonding, and reverence for nature, and our Andhra Association of Queensland has celebrated this tradition in its entirety.

Khel Ratna but was shockingly overlooked: Sources
New Delhi, Dec 23 (IANS) The double Olympic medallist Manu Bhaker's name is conspicuously missing from the list of sportspersons nominated for the prestigious Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award this year. This unexpected snub comes despite Bhaker scripting history at the 2024 Paris Olympics, becoming the first Indian female shooter to win an Olympic medal by clinching bronze in the women’s 10m air pistol event.
She followed this up with another bronze in the mixed 10m air pistol team event alongside Sarabjot Singh, marking the first time any Indian has won two medals in a single Olympics since India’s independence.
On Monday, sources close to the shooter revealed to IANS that the double-medalist shooter did apply for the Khel Ratna award but wasn't picked. "Manu Bhaker indeed applied for Khel Ratna, but strangely didn't get picked. It is shocking for all. NRAI has no role in it," the source said. Meanwhile, on behalf of NRAI, President Kalikesh Narayan Singh Deo has written a letter to the Sports Ministry to consider Manu Bhaker's case.
Earlier this year, Bhaker found herself at the centre of
a controversy after posting on social media, questioning whether she deserved the Khel Ratna Award. The post drew backlash, with critics deeming it inappropriate, leading Bhaker to delete it. Despite the controversy, the absence of her name from the list of nominees has sparked widespread disappointment among her supporters.
The 22-year-old shooter’s performance in Paris was a culmination of years of determination and perseverance, especially after enduring the heartbreak of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, where a pistol malfunction derailed her campaign. Many had doubted her ability to bounce back, but Bhaker silenced her critics with a stunning comeback in Paris.
‘I think, I deserve it’, Manu Bhaker tells her father after Khel Ratna snub
New Delhi, Dec 23 (IANS) Snubbed by the Sports Ministry for the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna, the country's biggest sports award, despite making history by winning two bronze medals in the Paris Olympic Games, ace pistol shooter Manu Bhaker has left the decision to the people of the country to make the final call on whether she deserves the award or not.
Controversy erupted after the committee to decide the national sports awards did not recommend her name and instead put forth the names of Indian hockey team captain Harmanpreet Singh for the Khel Ratna Award, Manu's father Ram Kishan, exclusively told Telecom Asia Sport that she knows that she deserves the award but has left it for the country to decide
"I think I deserve it. Let the country decide," Manu was quoted as saying by her father in an exclusive interview with Telecom Asia Sport on Monday.
While the sports ministry has said that the 22-year-old shooter did not apply for the Khel Ratna, her family differs from the statement.
“She has been applying for various awards like Padma Shri for the last four years. So why wouldn’t she apply this year?” questioned Manu’s father Ram Kishan speaking exclusively with Telecom Asia Sport (www. telecomasia.net).
According to Ram Kishan, in the last few years, Manu had submitted 49 cash award applications which she was entitled to, however, all 49 applications had been rejected.
“Despite such a fantastic performance if Manu is not
recommended for Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna, then I am forced to believe that all is not well in the committee, or some orders were being followed. If we are to make India a sporting hub, then Olympic medallists, and Olympians in general, should be given respect and encouraged rather than discourage them with decisions like these,” Ram Kishan added.
Manu Bhaker made history in the Paris Olympic Games by becoming the first Indian female shooter to win an Olympic medal by clinching bronze in the women’s 10m air pistol event. She followed that up with another bronze in the mixed 10m air pistol team event alongside Sarabjot Singh, marking the first time any Indian has won two medals in a single Olympics since India’s independence.
Earlier this year, Bhaker found herself at the center of a controversy after posting on social media, questioning whether she deserved the Khel Ratna Award.
Her achievements are not confined to the Olympic podium. Bhaker also added to her illustrious record, which already includes gold medals at the Commonwealth Games and the Asian Games. She claimed gold at the 2018 CWG in the women’s 10m air pistol event, setting a Games record, and triumphed at the 2022 Asian Games in the women’s 25m pistol team event.
Australia clinch ICC Women’s Championship title for third time
Wellington, Dec 23 (IANS)
Australia capped off their 24-match ICC Women's Championship campaign with a dominant a 75-run victory over New Zealand at the Basin Reserve in Wellington, securing an unassailable lead in the tournament standings and
clinching their third consecutive title in the competition.
Finishing with 39 points (17 wins, three no-results, three losses), Australia’s total is beyond reach for any other team. India, their closest competitor, can only reach 37 points with their remaining matches against West Indies (two) and Ireland (three).
The loss has significant implications for New Zealand, who now face uncertainty regarding automatic qualification
for the 2025 ICC Women's Cricket World Cup. Currently sitting in the final automatic spot with 21 points from 24 matches, they are vulnerable to being overtaken by Bangladesh (19 points, three matches remaining) or the West Indies (14 points, five matches remaining). If overtaken, New Zealand will have to compete in the Cricket World Cup Qualifier, where six teams vie for the last two tournament spots.
Australia’s victory also secures an automatic World Cup spot for Sri Lanka, who can no longer be displaced by teams with games in hand.
The match further solidified Australia’s reputation as one of the most dominant teams in women’s cricket.
Opting to bat first, Alyssa Healy and Phoebe Litchfield laid a strong foundation with an 88-run opening stand. Contributions from Annabel Sutherland (42
off 43) and Ashleigh Gardner (74 off 62) helped the visitors post a commanding 290.
In reply, New Zealand appeared well-placed at 106/1 in the 20th over, but a boundary catch to dismiss Suzie Bates and a run-out of Melie Kerr shifted the momentum. From there, Australia’s bowlers took control, with Sutherland (3-39) and Alana King (3-34) leading the charge to bowl out the White Ferns for 215.

Currently, the hand-knotted rugs with original and contemporary designs of flowers, dragons and eight lucky signs, weaved on vertical looms by tying double knots over a rod, are much in demand across the globe, mainly in Japan, the US, Canada, Britain, Australia and Germany.
Every day a team of workers while dyeing wool derived from traditional vegetal dyes, laying out designs or weaving carpets chant Buddhist mantras, which they believe will bring happiness and good fortune to the customers.
Most of these workers were born in Tibet and had to flee from Chinese tyranny to seek refuge in India, where their spiritual leader the Dalai Lama was granted asylum on April 3, 1959, They weave their lives around karma and the carpets. Karma refers to one’s actions and the consequences of those actions, while carpets, mats and Thangka paintings symbolise their day-today struggle to survive, thrive and flourish.
One of its acclaimed handcrafted carpets is Tibetan tiger skin with
a black stripe on a traditional light brown background which was published in Numero fashion magazine of Tokyo in October 2022 edition.
Tibet-born Tseyang, a 50-yearold woman weaver, told IANS that each 60-knot rug with a dimension of 231cm x 140 cm employs two people and consumes around a month to weave, with the tiger face being the most time-consuming, each knot of wool.
This year the Tibetan Handicraft Cooperative Society, an authorised exporter, which usually weaves flowers, dragons or auspicious eight symbols, was recognized as one of the best cooperatives in the state by the National Cooperative Development Corporation (NCDC).
“Our export of carpets is over 85 per cent and we have huge orders of tiger-shaped rugs from Australia-based Tim Roodenrys,” Tibetan Handicraft Cooperative Society Manager Tenzin Rigsang told IANS, adding “We have already shipped carpets of Rs 3040 lakh to him”.
“Roodenrys has unwavering loyalty for the weavers as he occasionally shares his earnings with them as a goodwill gesture to preserve a history of thousands of years,” Rigsang added. Each tiger carpet costs Rs 40,000.
The Tibetan Handicraft Cooperative Society is one of the 15 societies to make the Tibetan settlements viable and sustainable by generating employment opportunities within the Tibetan community.
Following the Chinese invasion, His Holiness the Dalai Lama fled to India on March 31, 1959, along with thousands of Tibetans and established the exile government, known as the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA), in Mussoorie in April 1959, and later shifted to Dharamsala in May 1960.
With its long history and spiritual heritage, Tibetan people survived over six decades in exile as the most successful refugee community in the world.
Today the Dalai Lama, who will turn 90 on July 6, 2025, is not only the spiritual leader of the Tibetan people but is committed to preserving the Tibetan language and culture, the heritage Tibetans received from the masters of India’s Nalanda University. He believes, “The preservation of Tibetan culture is very much needed because it is a tradition of peace, love and compassion. But it is being completely destroyed. Through Tibetan culture, we can make some contributions to create a happier and peaceful world through inner peace and a calm mind.”
South Korea unveils measures to revive tourism market amid political fallout
The government unveiled a set of measures on Thursday aimed at stabilising its tourism sector, facing setbacks after President Yoon Suk Yeol's brief martial law declaration and impeachment.
The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism reported the measures during a government meeting presided over by acting President and Prime Minister Han Duck-soo, reports Yonhap news agency.
International tourist arrivals have rebounded to 94 percent of prepandemic levels, with 13.7 million visitors recorded by October. However, the industry is facing a renewed strain due to political unrest following Yoon's martial law declaration on December 3 that prompted major economies to issue heightened travel alerts. The meeting comes amid concerns that the repercussions of the political situation could extend into the first half of next
year.
To facilitate a quick recovery and revitalise the tourism market, the government will launch aggressive campaigns to promote a positive image of traveling to Korea through various channels, the ministry announced. They include major international tourism expos and the culture ministry's "K-tourism roadshow," a series of overseas events promoting Korean tourism.
As part of efforts to stimulate demand for tourism, South Korea will intensively hold a series of large-scale events aimed at recreating demands for visiting the country in the first half of 2025, including the Korea Grand Sale, the Beyond K-Festa "hallyu" festival and the Korea Beauty Festival for showcasing the nation's burgeoning K-beauty industry. Hallyu refers to the global boom of Korean pop culture.
To enhance the convenience of
foreign tourists, the government will operate four of the eight languages available for its "1330 tourism interpretation and information service" for tourists for 24 hours from January to March next year.
The temporary exemption of the Korea Electronic Travel Authorization (K-ETA) program for select countries and regions will be extended for another year until December 2025. Visa issuance fees for group tourists from China and five Southeast Asian nations will also be waived till the same month.
The government will cooperate with private companies, such as Naver, to improve foreignlanguage maps, restaurant reservations and payment systems. Efforts include expanding foreign-language translations of reviews for tourist sites and restaurants on the local portal service and increasing QR payment infrastructure at major tourist attractions and shopping centres. Automatic ticket vending machines allowing payments with international credit cards will also be introduced.
In addition to its focus on inbound tourism, the government announced plans to launch nationwide campaigns promoting domestic tourism, provide financial support to the industry, which has been impacted by the political turmoil, and expand regional tourism infrastructure.

The Jubilee, a tradition dating back to 1300, typically takes place every 25 or 50 years. Authorities estimate that more than 30 million visitors will travel to Rome and other religious sites across Italy during the 2025 Jubilee Year.
The event is expected to provide significant economic benefits. Media reports project the influx of visitors could generate approximately 10 billion euros ($10.4 billion) for the local economy.
The Jubilee, while primarily focused on the nearly 1.4 billion Catholics worldwide, also seeks to engage a broader audience. Since its inception in 1300 by Pope Boniface VIII, the traditions surrounding this event have evolved significantly.
He wrote, "On the westernmost edge of India lies Kutch, a mesmerising land with a vibrant heritage. Kutch is home to the iconic White Rann, a vast salt desert that gleams under
the moonlight, offering an otherworldly experience. It is equally celebrated for its thriving arts and crafts. And, most importantly, it is home to the most hospitable people, proud of their roots and eager to engage with the world."
"Each year, the warm-hearted people of Kutch open their doors for the iconic Rann Utsav - a fourmonth-long vibrant celebration of the region’s uniqueness, breathtaking beauty and enduring spirit," he wrote.
"Through this post, I am extending my personal invitation to all of you, dynamic, hardworking professionals, and your families to visit Kutch and enjoy the Rann Utsav. This year's Rann Utsav, which commenced on December 1, will go on till February 28, 2025, wherein the tent city at Rann Utsav will be open till March 2025. I assure you all that Rann Utsav will be a lifetime experience," said PM Modi in his post.
In 2005, Rann Utsav was launched to tap into the previously unseen tourism potential of Kutch. It has grown into a vibrant tourism centre now. Rann Utsav has also received several domestic and international awards.

SpaDeX mission to help India ace space docking technology: ISRO
New Delhi, Dec 21 (IANS) The SpaDeX mission, expected to launch this year aboard the PSLV-C60 rocket, will propel India to the elite club of nations with space docking capabilities, said Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) on Saturday. ISRO aims to launch PSLV-C60 on December 30. However, the launch window is open till January 13.
The space agency informed that the mission has completed “all tests and clearances”. The integration of the SpaDeX spacecraft is complete, and the spacecraft has been moved to Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC) in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh. It is currently “undergoing preparations for launch”.
While only a few countries have aced the space docking technology, it is key for India for its impending space missions
including the Moon mission, and setting up the Indian space station.
“The launch vehicle has been integrated and now moved to the First Launch Pad, for further integration of satellites and launch preparations,” ISRO said in a post on X.
“ISRO’s SpaDeX mission, launching with PSLV-C60, will demonstrate in-space docking using two small spacecraft. This groundbreaking technology is key to future lunar missions, building Bharatiya Antariksh Station (BAS), and more. India aims to join the elite club of nations with space docking capabilities,” it added.
The PSLV will lift off two small spacecraft -- SDX01, which is the Chaser, and SDX02, the Target -- weighing about 220 kg each.
The mission will showcase the docking of the two spacecraft in a low-Earth circular orbit.
"In-space docking technology is essential when multiple rocket launches are required to achieve common mission objectives.
Through this mission, India is marching towards becoming the
fourth country in the world to have space docking technology,” ISRO said.
It will also demonstrate “the transfer of electric power between the docked spacecraft, which is essential for future applications such as in-space robotics -- composite spacecraft control, and payload operations after undocking”.
ISRO has also developed indigenous technologies to enable this docking mission. This includes a docking mechanism, a suite of four rendezvous and docking sensors, power transfer technology, indigenous novel autonomous rendezvous and docking strategy, inter-satellite communication link (ISL) for autonomous communication between spacecraft, incorporated with inbuilt intelligence to know the states of the other spacecraft, among others.
This mission will be a forerunner for autonomous docking needed for future lunar missions like Chandrayaan-4 without the support of GNSS from Earth, ISRO said.

Coffee, tea may protect against head & neck cancer: Study
New Delhi, Dec 23 (IANS)
Consumption of coffee and tea can lower the risks of developing head and neck cancer, including cancers of the mouth and throat, claimed a study on Monday. Head and neck cancer is the seventh most common cancer worldwide, and rates are rising in low- and middle-income countries.
The findings, based on an analysis of data from 14 studies, showed that compared with non-coffeedrinkers, individuals who drank more than 4 cups of caffeinated coffee daily had 17 per cent lower odds of having head and neck cancer overall. It also led to a 30 per cent lower risk of having cancer of the oral cavity, and 22 per cent lower odds of having
throat cancer.
Drinking 3-4 cups of caffeinated coffee was linked with a 41 per cent lower risk of having hypopharyngeal cancer -- a type of cancer at the bottom of the throat), revealed the study published in the peer-reviewed CANCER journal.
“While there has been prior research on coffee and tea consumption and reduced risk of cancer, this study highlighted their varying effects with different sub-sites of head and neck cancer, including the observation that even decaffeinated coffee had some positive impact,” said senior author Yuan-Chin Amy Lee, from Huntsman Cancer Institute and the University of Utah School of Medicine.
“Coffee and tea habits are fairly complex, and these findings support the need for more data and further studies around the impact that coffee and tea can have on reducing cancer risk.”
The team examined data from 14 studies by different scientists and pooled information on 9,548 patients with head and neck cancer. They were then compared with 15,783 controls without cancer.
Study participants completed questionnaires about their prior consumption of caffeinated coffee, decaffeinated coffee, and tea in cups per day/week/month/ year.
Notably, the researchers found that drinking decaffeinated coffee was associated with 25 per cent lower odds of oral cavity cancer. Drinking tea was linked with 29 per cent lower odds of hypopharyngeal cancer. Also, drinking one cup or less of tea daily was linked with a 9 per cent lower risk of head and neck cancer overall and a 27 per cent lower risk of hypopharyngeal cancer, but drinking more than one cup was associated with 38 per cent higher odds of laryngeal cancer.
Recuperated from illness because of Ayushman Bharat, says Jabalpur beneficiary
Jabalpur, Dec 23 (IANS) The Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Aarogya Yojana (PM-JAY), one of the flagship schemes of Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government, has turned out to be a saviour for many individuals and families, struck with serious illnesses or life-threatening diseases.
The beneficiaries of the scheme are primarily the citizens from the lower strata, across the length and breadth of the country.
In Madhya Pradesh’s Jabalpur, 72-year-old Komal Prasad Sahu is one of the beneficiaries who
received treatment under the Ayushman Bharat and is now back to living a normal life again.
Today, he and his family are highly grateful to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for launching such a people-friendly policy and also ensuring that it reaches the disadvantaged classes.
Komal Prasad Sahu, a resident of the Ramnagar area (Ambedkar ward) of Ranjhi area in Jabalpur Cantt fell ill sometime ago and faced dire prospects. Getting treatment at hospitals was a far-fetched dream for the family owing to its financial condition. It was at this time, the Ayushman Bharat Yojana came to their rescue. The senior citizen got admitted to hospital and recuperated at government's expense.
Speaking to IANS, the PM-JAY beneficiary said that he got benefits of upto Rs 1 lakh under
the scheme.
“I was ill for a long time but due to lack of money, couldn’t get myself treated. As soon as I came to know about Ayushman Bharat Yojana, I took advantage of it by getting Ayushman Bharat card made,” he said.
“I am very thankful to PM Modi. It’s because of him and his scheme that I have got my life back,” he added.
After treatment, Komal Prasad Sahu is healthy and happy again. His son also told IANS that they were financially incapable of getting him treated at hospital but the PM-JAY changed their lives forever.
“I got to know about the Ayushman Bharat scheme from our elected representatives. We are very thankful to PM Modi and our legislator for this assistance,” he added.
Healthcare makes substantial progress in India in 2024
New Delhi, Dec 23 (IANS) From expanding health coverage to all elderly above 70 years of age to promoting cervical cancer vaccination among young girls to slashing customs duty on cancer drugs and improving several disease rates, India has made substantial progress in healthcare in 2024.
In 2024, the Union government continued its emphasis on tackling non-communicable diseases and allocating funds for research in the healthcare sector.
The Union Budget 2024-25’s total outlay for the health sector was Rs 89,287 crore, amounting to 1.85 per cent of the budget expenditure. While it remains below the 2 per cent mark for health outlays from FY18 to FY22, it is marginally up from 1.76 per cent, and Rs 79,221 crore in the revised estimate for budget 202324.
It exempted customs duty on three crucial cancer drugs -Trastuzumab deruxtecan (for breast cancer), Osimertinib (lung cancer drug for EGFR mutation), and Durvalumab (for lung and biliary tract cancers).
In addition, GST rates for these drugs were also slashed -- from 12 per cent to 5 per cent; the maximum retail price (MRP) was reduced for these drugs.
Further, the flagship health insurance scheme Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY) was expanded to provide health coverage to all senior citizens above 70 years irrespective of their income.
The government has also worked towards medical education and infrastructure. In his address to the nation on Independence Day, PM Narendra Modi promised to create 75,000 more medical seats in the next five years, from the current over one lakh in the country to reduce foreign dependence in medical education. The government added 5,150 more seats for MBBS courses in 2024.
Over two lakh Ayushman Arogya Mandirs have been established across the country to facilitate early diagnosis and treatment. More than 14,000 Jan Aushadhi Kendras have also been launched across the country where medicines are available at an 80 per cent discount -- a significant reduction in the cost of treatment for both poor and middle-class families.
Further, emphasising the vision of 'Swasth Bharat' (Healthy India) for 'Viksit Bharat 2047', the Ministry of Women and Child Development (WCD) also introduced the Rashtriya Poshan Mission to enhance the nutritional status of children, pregnant women, lactating mothers, and adolescent girls.
Parallelly, India's digital health infrastructure has seen remarkable advancements through the Ayushman Bharat Health Account (ABHA) initiative -- a hassle-free method of accessing and sharing your health records digitally. Till December 22, more than 71.81 crore ABHA numbers have been generated and 46.53 crore health records have been linked with ABHA. Mission Indradhanush led to the vaccination of 5.46 crore children and 1.32 crore pregnant women. The programme also includes a provision of 11 types of vaccines enhancing protection against preventable diseases. A U-WIN portal was also launched to digitise routine immunisations. Notably, these efforts led to remarkable improvement in key health indicators, including a reduction in Maternal Mortality Ratio, Infant Mortality Rate, and Total Fertility Rate.
India also got WHO certification for eliminating trachoma -- a bacterial eye infection that can cause irreversible blindness. India is the fourth country in Southeast Asia, after Nepal, Myanmar, and Pakistan to achieve the feat.
A shorter and more effective treatment regimen for tuberculosis was also launched under the National TB Elimination Programme (NTEP). It reduced the treatment duration from 9-12 months to 6 months.
Heart muscle can regenerate after failure in some people with artificial hearts: Study
The team co-led by a physicianscientist at the University of Arizona College of Medicine –Tucson’s Sarver Heart Center
in the US found that a subset of artificial heart patients can regenerate heart muscle, which may open the door to new ways to treat and perhaps someday cure heart failure.
There is no cure for heart failure, though medications can slow its progression. The only treatment for advanced heart failure, other than a transplant, is pump replacement through an artificial heart, called a left ventricular assist device, which can help the heart pump blood.
“Skeletal muscle has a significant ability to regenerate after injury.
If you’re playing soccer and you tear a muscle, you need to rest it, and it heals,” said Hesham Sadek, chief of the Division of Cardiology at the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Tucson’s Department of Medicine.
“When a heart muscle is injured, it doesn’t grow back. We have nothing to reverse heart muscle loss,” Sadek said in a paper published in the journal Circulation.
Sadek led a collaboration between international experts to investigate whether heart muscles can regenerate.
The project began with tissue from artificial heart patients provided by colleagues at the University of Utah Health and School of Medicine led by Stavros Drakos, a pioneer in left ventricular assist devicemediated recovery.
The investigators found that patients with artificial hearts regenerated muscle cells at more than six times the rate of healthy hearts.
“This is the strongest evidence we have, so far, that human heart muscle cells can actually regenerate, which really is
exciting, because it solidifies the notion that there is an intrinsic capacity of the human heart to regenerate,” Sadek said.
It also strongly supports the hypothesis that the inability of the heart muscle to ‘rest’ is a major driver of the heart’s lost ability to regenerate shortly after birth. It may be possible to target the molecular pathways involved in cell division to enhance the heart’s ability to regenerate, said the study authors.
New York, Dec 22 (IANS) Heart muscle can regenerate after failure in some people with artificial hearts, an international research team has found.

Chase the sun,
not
the damage: Smart skin care choices for summer
As the days grow longer and the sun shines brighter, many of us eagerly embrace the warmth of summer. However, the need for diligent skin care comes with the joys of outdoor activities and beach vacations.
Before diving into skin care tips, it's essential to understand the damaging effects of the sun's ultraviolet (UV) rays. Prolonged exposure to UV radiation can lead to many skin concerns, including sunburn and premature ageing.
"One of the most effective ways to shield your skin from sun damage is sunscreen. Look for a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a high SPF (Sun Protection Factor) rating to ensure comprehensive protection against both UVA and UVB rays. Apply sunscreen generously to all exposed areas of skin, including your face, neck, and ears, and remember to reapply every two hours, especially if you're swimming or sweating," says Mansi Sharma, founder of The Honest Tree by Boddess.
Hydration is key. Summer heat can take a toll on your skin, leading to dehydration and a loss of moisture. Mansi recommends
to combat the heat by staying hydrated from the inside out. She says, "Drink plenty of water throughout the day to keep your skin hydrated and plump. Additionally, incorporate hydrating skincare products into your routine, such as lightweight moisturizers and serums formulated with hyaluronic acid or glycerin."
While sunscreen provides crucial protection, it's not the only line of defence against the sun's rays. "Consider covering up with lightweight, breathable clothing, hats, and sunglasses to provide additional protection for your skin and eyes. Opt for tightly woven fabrics and dark colours for optimal sun protection," adds Mansi. "When possible, seek shade during the sun's peak hours, typically between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. This is when UV radiation is at its strongest, increasing the risk of sunburn and skin damage. Take breaks from direct sunlight by relaxing under a beach umbrella or finding shelter in a shaded area."
The founder of The Honest Tree by Boddess also suggests that while selecting skincare products for summer, opt for formulations that cater to the specific needs of sun-exposed skin. Mansi says, "Look for products enriched with antioxidants like vitamins C and E, which help neutralize free radicals generated by UV exposure. Incorporating a gentle exfoliant into your routine can also help slough off dead skin cells, revealing a fresh, radiant complexion."

The trailer of the upcoming movie ‘Hindi Vindi’ was unveiled on Monday. The film stars Neena Gupta and Mihir Ahuja. It also marks the acting debut of Guy Sebastian. The trailer offers a peek into the narrative which explores themes of identity, family, and the universal language of music.
The film is a co-production between India and Australia, and is directed by Ali Sayed, with its music composed by Javed-Mohsin and Guy Sebastian himself.

Abhijeet Bhattacharya
gives controversial remark on Mahatma Gandhi
Playback
singer Abhijeet
Bhattacharya, who once was the voice of Bollywood icon Shah Rukh Khan in film music, is back to doing what he does best: stirring up controversies.
This time, the singer is on the radar for his comments on Mahatma Gandhi, who is known as one of the founding fathers of independent India.
The singer told Shubhankar Mishra on his podcast, “Music composer R. D. Burman was
bigger than Mahatma Gandhi. Like Mahatma Gandhi was the father of the nation, R. D. Burman was the father of the nation in the world of music”.
If this wasn’t enough, the singer went on to launch a more scathing attack on Gandhi as he called him the father of nation for Pakistan.
“Mahatma Gandhi was the father of the nation for Pakistan and not India. India already existed, Pakistan was carved out of India later. Gandhi has been mistakenly called the father of nation for India. He was the one responsible behind the existence of Pakistan”, he added.
Abhijeet Bhattacharya was launched by R. D. Burman in a Bengali film with a duet song with veteran singer Asha Bhosle. He did stage shows as a singer with R. D. Burman during the initial phase of his career.
Badshah calls for truce between Diljit Dosanjh, A. P. Dhillon, cites own example of baseless fights
The controversy around Punjabi superstar Diljit Dosanjh and singer-songwriter A. P. Dhillon appears to be snowballing. Now rapper Badshah seems to have jumped in to intervene between the two music superstars.
Badshah recently took to the Stories section of his Instagram, and shared a note in which he presumably urged the two. He wrote, “Please don't make the mistakes that we made. The world is ours for the taking. Like they say ‘if you wanna go fast, go alone but if you wanna go far, go together’. United we stand”.
This comes after A. P. Dhillon, who is known for chartbusters like ‘Brown Munde’, ‘Excuses’, ‘Summer High’ and others, said
during one of his shows that Diljit has blocked him on Instagram. In response, Diljit said while performing during his live show that the accusation is baseless, and he has not blocked anyone.
Soon after this, A. P. Dhillon took to the Stories section of his Instagram, and shared a screenrecording which shows that he cannot view the content on Diljit’s Instagram handle as he has been blocked by the Punjabi superstar. Dhillon then shared another screen-recording which shows him getting the access to the content on Diljit’s handle after the latter unblocked him.
Diljit, on his part, responded to the allegations once again saying that all his fight is against the
governments and he would never pick a fight with a fellow artist as he respects the art and the artists. What Badshah inferred in his Instagram Story when he said, “Please don't make the mistakes that we made” is the infamous fallout between him and the rapper Yo Yo Honey Singh.
The two artists earlier worked together, and were reportedly a part of the music group Mafia Mundeer (founded by Honey Singh) along with Diljit. But, Badshah and Honey Singh found themselves at loggerheads.
Honey even went on to claim that Badshah was never a part of Mafia Mundeer as he came from an affluent family, and the core philosophy of Mafia Mundeer was to give a platform to struggling artists who found it difficult to materialise their dreams because of financial difficulties. Honey said that Badshah didn’t fit anywhere in the prerequisites of Mafia Mundeer given the influential status of his family.
Honey claimed that Badshah was only his client and not a partner at Mafia Mundeer, as he was paid by Badshah’s father to compose and program a song for his son.
AP Dhillon shares new evidence in ongoing feud with Diljit Dosanjh
APDhillon recently accused Diljit Dosanjh of blocking him on social media. In response to Diljit’s categorical denial, Dhillon shared 'proof' to back his claim that he was indeed blocked by the 'Lover' singer.
Taking to his Instagram handle, Dhillon posted a screen recording showing his attempt to view Diljit’s profile, only to discover he had been blocked. However, it later appeared that Diljit had unblocked Dhillon, as the profile was accessible once again. Sharing the clip, the singer wrote, “I wasn’t planning on saying sh*t knowing everyone will hate on me anyway, but at least we know what’s real and what’s not (sic).” The feud began when Diljit,
during his concert in Indore, gave a shoutout to singers Karan Aujla and AP Dhillon, who were also performing in India. However, Dhillon responded during his Chandigarh concert, saying, “I just want to say one small thing, brother. First, unblock me on Instagram and then talk to me. I don’t want to talk about what marketing is happening, but first unblock me. I’ve been working for three years. Have you ever seen me in any controversy?”
The ‘Honsla Rakh’ actor responded on Instagram by sharing a screenshot of Dhillon’s profile. Along with it, he wrote, “I never blocked you... I might have issues with the government, but not with artists.” In response,

Actor-filmmaker Pooja Bhatt celebrated eight years of sobriety after quitting alcohol.
The actress took to social media to share her journey, expressing that the opposite of addiction is not just sobriety but connection.
the 'Dil Nu' singer shared his 'proof' video, while Diljit has yet to address the matter further.
During his concert in Indore, Diljit mentioned Karan Aujla and AP Dhillon, saying, “Mere aur do bhaiyon ne tour shuru kiya hai Karan Aujla aur AP Dhillon ne, unke liye bhi best of luck (Two of my brothers, Karan Aujla and AP Dhillon, have started their tours; best of luck to them, too).”
Adding to this, the ‘Don’ singer emphasized that the time for independent music has begun. He stated, “Problems will arise. When there is a revolution, problems will arise. We will keep working.”

On Monday, Pooja posted a candid photo of herself with the caption, “8 years sober today. Gratitude. Gravitas. Grace. 'You’re not alone, we love you' has to be at every level of how we respond to addicts socially, politically, and individually. For one hundred years now, we’ve been singing war songs about addicts. I think all along we should have been singing love songs to them… because the opposite of addiction is not sobriety. The opposite of addiction is connection." –

The ‘Dil Hai Ki Manta Nahin’ actress gave up alcohol around 2016. Pooja Bhatt, daughter of filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt, has
been candid about her struggles with alcohol. She had previously shared that she decided to quit drinking after realizing she had fallen into the "trap of addiction" and understood that the only way to break free was to acknowledge it to herself.
During her stint on the reality show “Bigg Boss OTT 2," the 'Sadak' actress admitted she had a drinking problem, which prompted her to acknowledge her addiction and make the decision to quit.
Pooja also pointed out how women often don’t have the same freedom as men to openly discuss addiction in society.
She said on the show, “Society gives a license to men, and thus they can openly speak about being addicted and recovering from alcoholism. However, women don't openly drink, and so they don't openly recover. I used to drink openly, so when I thought of recovering from alcoholism, I realized that why should I recover in the closet? People used to call me an alcoholic, but then I said, ‘I'm a recovering alcoholic.”
