According to the government release, the commissioning of three major naval combatants marks a significant leap forward in realizing India’s vision of becoming a global leader in defence manufacturing and maritime security. These combatants have been built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders as a tribute to Atmanirbhar Bharat. Together they embody a credible, cohesive, future-ready and combat-ready force.

in our country. We are now up against the Indian state itself,” said Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, after the inauguration of the new Congress headquarters in the national capital on Wednesday.
Describing the broader ideological battle, Gandhi emphasized two conflicting visions of India. "This is the key fight taking place in India. There are two visions in conflict -- one is our idea, the idea of the Constitution; and the other is the idea of the RSS. One idea says India is a union of states -- we have all the scheduled languages featured in this Bhavan, equally placed together, without any superior or inferior language or culture or community. This building symbolises this diversity," he said.
Referring to Bhagwat's statement that true independence was achieved only with the construction of the Ram Mandir, Gandhi remarked, “Mohan Bhagwat has the audacity to inform us what he thinks about the Independence Movement and the nation. What he said yesterday is treason because if he is stating that the Constitution is invalid and the fight against the British was invalid then it's treason. In any other country, one would be arrested and tried. To say that India didn't get Independence in 1947 is an insult to every single Indian. And it's time we stop listening to such nonsense.”
Reflecting on Congress' history and its role in shaping modern India, Gandhi said, “This building stands as a reminder of the Congress party’s impact on India’s soul. Inside, you’ll find
the legacy of Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Patel, and countless others who served the Constitution and saluted the Tricolour. In contrast, those in power today neither salute the Tricolour nor respect the Constitution. Their vision for India is one of control by a select few, silencing the voices of Dalits, minorities, tribals, and backward classes.”
Gandhi delved into India's philosophical roots. “Unlike the Western world, which focuses on outside the self, the Indian way of thinking is about understanding the self. Our great masters, they are all about understandingprecisely: where you come from, who you are, and what your nature is. The Bhagavad Gita, Bhagwan Shiva, Guru Nanak ji, and Sant Kabir, they all talk about that.”

Kumbh Festival.”
The festive spirit was palpable as over 50 lakh devotees took a holy dip at the Sangam Triveni on Sunday, ahead of the first bathing festival, Paush Purnima.
The gathering included saints, sages, men, women, children, and the elderly, all immersed in devotion. Earlier on Saturday, another 33 lakh people participated in the holy ritual, and over 45 crore devotees are
expected to take part in the event over the coming weeks.
Because of the MahaKumbh, Prayagraj has undergone a remarkable transformation under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.
Once characterised by narrow, worn-out roads, the city now boasts upgraded infrastructure, including the construction and improvement of more than 200 roads, ensuring seamless connectivity for devotees.
The Yogi Adityanath-led government’s commitment to providing a smooth and convenient experience for pilgrims has brought cheer and enthusiasm among the attendees.
The first "Amrit Snan" will take place on Makar Sankranti, January 14, with all Akharas participating in a traditional bathing sequence. As the Mahakumbh progresses, it continues to symbolise unity in diversity and the pride of Sanatan Dharma.

"For us, this is more than just an event; it is a celebration of our shared heritage and aspirations,” she added.
Thashidaran Tharmar, a delegate from Malaysia and the fourth generation of his family to have settled there, said that this initiative is truly a noble cause.
He said, “This initiative unites Indians from all over the world at a specific venue, which this year is the culturally rich state of Odisha.
I am immensely proud to be here and call myself an Indian. The Government of India has done a commendable job in organising this event in Odisha, providing us with an opportunity to explore the state’s culture, heritage, and business prospects."
“For the Indian diaspora, this convention instils a profound sense of belonging. Regardless of how many generations have passed in their adopted countries, this gathering reminds us of our roots. This is my first Pravasi Bharatiya Divas, and I am honoured to be here, representing my country and contributing to its growth.”
The event, organised to celebrate
the contribution of the Indian diaspora, provided a platform for cultural exchange, discussions on global challenges, and opportunities to strengthen India’s ties with its overseas communities.
Pravasi Bharatiya Divas is celebrated every year on January 9 to commemorate Mahatma Gandhi’s return to India from South Africa in 1915.
The 18th edition of the convention began on Wednesday in Bhubaneswar with the inauguration of the Youth Pravasi Bharatiya Divas by Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar.
Over the past three days, the event has hosted around 5,000 delegates from various countries. Plenary sessions addressed key global and domestic issues, offering insights into areas like economic cooperation, technology, and cultural preservation.
The convention reached its peak on Thursday with the formal inauguration by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the Janata Maidan. In his address, the Prime Minister emphasised the importance of the Indian diaspora in shaping the nation’s future and fostering global harmony.

the nation for 100 years through Sanatan literature and had the privilege of expressing my gratitude to the excellent service work of Gita Press,” he wrote in a post.
Notably, Gorakhpur-based Gita Press is the country’s largest publisher of Hindu religious texts and scriptures. Credited for safeguarding the Hindu faith during colonial rule, the iconic institution faced the threat of closure not long ago. However, the Pran Pratistha ceremony of Ram Lalla gave it a fresh lease of life and it found deluged with the demand of Ramcharitmanas, thus prompting the company to reinvigorate the firm with fresh investments.
Group Chairman Gautam Adani has said he always feels that he has reached the position with the Almighty's blessings who guides him to do what he is doing and that the money and all the individual needs are very marginal.
"I come from a very humble family background, and whatever stage we reach, sometimes when I close my eyes, I always feel that I have not come and sit basically at this place because of my ability. My Almighty is basically there to see I am doing what I am doing. So, money and all that ultimately for your individual capacity requirement is very very marginal."
He said this during his interaction with Guru Prasad Swami Maharaj, Chairman of the Governing Body Commission of ISKCON in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.
The International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON)
and the Adani Group have joined hands to serve meals to devotees at the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj, which is beginning on Monday. The Mahaprasad Seva will be offered for the entire duration of the Maha Kumbh Mela, from January 13 January to February 26.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 18th PBD Convention on Thursday in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, in the presence of EAM Jaishankar, Odisha Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, Union Ministers Dharmendra Pradhan and Ashwini Vaishnaw, among other dignitaries.
The event commenced with a performance by three-time Grammy Award winner Ricky Kej. Addressing the gathering, EAM Jaishankar expressed pride in the achievements of the Indian diaspora. "You all not only feel proud of your achievements but also enhance India's global respect."
"In a globalised era, the diaspora becomes more important with each passing year. As we strive to make a global workspace, this will be even more so in the times to come," he said.
Jaishankar highlighted the "people-centric changes" introduced in India, such as improving ease of doing business, living, and travel.
He mentioned the application of digital technologies for diaspora welfare, including simplified passport issuance and renewal, enhanced consular services, grievance redressal platforms, and more responsible embassies and consulates.
"Most importantly, in times of difficulty, you can be confident that the Modi Sarkar has your back," he added. He lauded Odisha for its rich historical and cultural heritage, citing the Jagannath Temple, Lingaraj Temple, Konark Temple, and other attractions.
"The hosting of this PBD in Odisha is reflective of Modi Sarkar's 'Poorudaya' Policy. In so many ways, Odisha represents the
Puri beach festival: Sculptures made from waste materials a big draw
Puri, Jan 8 (IANS) The 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) began in Bhubaneshwar on Wednesday and will continue till January 10. Over next two days, it will see participation of many acclaimed and esteemed NRIs and people of Indian origin.
Amid the festive atmosphere in the state capital, Puri beaches are drawing everyone’s attention including the NRIs for its beautiful artworks and sculptures made from waste materials. They have turned out to be a big hit with domestic as well as foreign visitors.
The Puri Niladri Beach Festival was inaugurated on Wednesday. Many artists are showcasing their unique artworks, made from garbage including plastic bottles, broken toys, glass bottles, washers, tin cans, broken nets, threads, ropes, and other discarded items.
A team of 11 artists made a dedicated effort to raise awareness about the harmful impact of waste on the environment, particularly on beaches. These creations are conveying a strong social message to the public.
full richness of our history and culture," Jaishankar said He also drew a parallel between the state's famous Bali Yatra and the Indian government's 'Act East' policy. "When we define ourselves as an Indo-Pacific nation, we do so from the eastern sea border of Odisha," he said.
Jaishankar highlighted India's growing confidence, modernisation, and inclusiveness, where tradition and technology coexist. He encouraged the diaspora to contribute to the journey of building a "Viksit Bharat."
The PBD Convention, organised by the Central government in collaboration with the Odisha state government, is being held from January 8 to 10. Delegates from over 50 countries have registered for the event, themed "Diaspora's Contribution to a Viksit Bharat." The Pravasi Bharatiya Divas Convention was first established in 2003 under the leadership of then-Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee as a platform to recognise and engage with the overseas Indian community. It is the flagship event of the Ministry of External Affairs, showcasing the diversity and progress of different Indian regions.
Yuvabrata Kar, Odisha Ecotourism Foundation official told IANS that several artists are working day and night to spread awareness about the need to maintain the purity and serenity
of beaches.
“Puri is already home to beautiful and vibrant beaches. In our effort to turn it into an art beach, we have made multiple installations, under which several artists are working day and night to spread awareness of cleanliness and proper hygiene.”
Mayadhar Sahu, an artist said that he along with many undertook this campaign to utilise waste products in houses and surroundings and put them to good use.
“The idea is to make people understand the demonic and evil impact of plastics on our lives,” he said.
“I have made a gate in front of the ocean, using garbage. As the dirt and filth at the door of ocean will harm its sanctity, the same logic should apply to our homes. We must not create mounds of garbage of plastics, in front of our houses,” he stated.
Elaborating on the objective of beach festival, he said that going forward, one’s motive should be to minimise the usage of plastics and its supplements.
“Globally, the plastic is posing a serious threat to the nature and it calls upon all of us not just stop its use but also discourage those who are still using it,” he said.
Bibhunath, a Delhi-based artist named his creation 'Sunrise'.
Explaining his artwork, he said: "I made it using wood and other unused materials of house to spread the message of preserving one’s heritage while also safeguarding the sanctity of beaches."

RBI purchased another 8 tonnes of gold in Nov as safe-haven asset
the global stage. The delegates who are here to attend the grand event will stay in Bhubaneswar for three days and also visit different tourist places.

Offer help to them without any delay whenever they seek. Treat them so cordially that they will feel at their own birthplace and country. It is also our duty to keep our roads clean during this time. Our culture is ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ (the earth is one family). We consider the whole universe as our family, while the overseas Indians are our own people."
Mumbai, Jan 7 (IANS) The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) bought another eight tonnes of gold in November 2024 as Central banks around the world continued their buying spree with a collective purchase of 53 tonnes of the precious metal during the month, according to the latest World Gold Council (WGC) report.
The decline in gold prices during November, following the US election, may have provided some central banks with the added impetus to accumulate the precious metal, the report pointed out.
RBI has, like other central banks, been buying gold as a safe-haven asset. The strategy of holding gold is primarily aimed at hedging against inflation and reducing foreign currency risks, especially in times of uncertainty triggered by geopolitical tensions.
With the addition of eight tonnes of gold to its reserves in November, the RBI has increased its buying to 73 tonnes in the first 11 months of 2024 and its total gold holdings to 876 tonnes, maintaining its position as the second largest buyer during the year after Poland.
The People's Bank of China (PBoC) has resumed gold purchases after a six-month gap, adding five tonnes of gold to its reserves, increasing its year-to-date net purchases to 34 tonnes and its total reported gold holdings to 2,264 tonnes (5 per cent of total reserves), the report said.
Meanwhile, the Monetary Authority of Singapore was the month's largest seller, reducing its gold reserves by 5 tonnes, bringing the year-to-date net sales to 7 tonnes and overall gold holdings to 223 tonnes, it added. The RBI’s gold purchases have shot up by five-fold over the quantity of the precious metal bought in the same period of 2023, according to WGC figures. According to the data, the RBI’s total gold reserves have now gone up to 890 tonnes, of which 510 tonnes are held in India.

SC relief: Asaram Bapu gets interim bail on medical grounds, but will remain in jail
New Delhi/Jaipur, Jan 7 (IANS)
The Supreme Court on Tuesday granted interim bail to 83-yearold self-styled godman Asaram Bapu till March 31 in connection with the rape case of a female follower at his ashram in Surat. The order was passed by a bench of Justices M.M. Sundresh and Rajesh Bindal, which also added a bail condition that Bapu should not meet his followers upon release from the Jodhpur Central Jail where he is serving a life sentence in another rape case.
Appearing for Asaram Bapu, Senior Advocate Devadatt Kamat, along with Advocates Rajesh Gulab Inamdar and Shashwat Anand, pressed on the merits of the case as well as on Asaram's medical condition. It was argued that the conviction was based solely on the testimony of the prosecutrix without corroborating evidence and pointed to inconsistencies in the prosecution's case.
However, the apex court opted not to delve into merits and confined its consideration to the petitioner's health issues, thereby disposing of the special leave petition.
Sources said that despite the bail, it seems difficult for Asaram to get out of jail as he is also serving a separate life sentence for raping a minor. Over the last five months, he has been granted parole three times.
Asaram’s lawyer, R.S. Saluja, stated that this is the first instance of bail being granted by the Supreme Court. However, Asaram cannot be released due to his conviction in the second case. This case, filed by a woman from Asaram’s ashram near Gandhinagar, remains a challenge. Preparations are underway to file a bail application in the Jodhpur High Court for the second conviction, he added. While granting bail, the Supreme Court stipulated that Asaram must not meet his followers or attempt to tamper with evidence.
In 2013, Asaram was arrested by Jodhpur Police from an ashram in Indore. After five years of hearings, he was sentenced to life imprisonment on April 25, 2018, for raping a minor.
Another rape case was filed by a woman from an ashram in Gandhinagar, Gujarat. On January

Eye tests can help predict stroke risk: Study
Sydney, Jan 14 (IANS) Routine eye tests can accurately predict a person's risk of stroke, according to an international research team on Tuesday.
The research, led by the Centre for Eye Research Australia (CERA) in Melbourne, Australia identified a blood vessel "fingerprint" at the back of the eye that can be used to predict a person's stroke risk as accurately as traditional risk factors, but without the need
for invasive tests, Xinhua News agency reported.
The research found that the fingerprint consists of 118 indicators of vascular health and can be analyzed from fundus photography, a common tool used in routine eye tests.
The team used a machine learning tool called the Retinabased Microvascular Health Assessment System (RMHAS) to analyse fundus photos of the eyes of 45,161 people in the UK with an average age of 55.
During an average monitoring period of 12.5 years, 749 participants had a stroke.
The researchers identified 29
of the 118 indicators as being significantly associated with firsttime stroke risk.
Of the 29, about 17 of the indicators were related to vascular density, the percentage of a region of tissue that is occupied by blood vessels. Low density in the retina and brain is associated with an increased risk of stroke.
According to the study, each change in density indicators was associated with an increased stroke risk of 10-19 per cent. Decreases in twistedness and complexity indicators were found to increase stroke risk by 10.5-19.5 per cent.
Australian inflation rises to 2.3 per cent
Canberra, Jan 8 (IANS) Australia's annual rate of inflation rose slightly in the year to November, new official figures have revealed.
According to the new data, which was published on Wednesday by the Australian Bureau of Statistics, the consumer price index (CPI) -- the headline measure of inflation -- rose by 2.3 per cent in the 12 months to November 2024.
It marks a slight acceleration from the 2.1 per cent CPI increase reported in the year to October 2024. The Australian Bureau of Statistics identified spending on food and drink, alcohol and tobacco and recreation as the major drivers of inflation over the 12 months to November.
Food and non-alcoholic beverage prices rose by 2.9 per cent, alcohol and tobacco prices by 6.7 per cent and recreation and culture prices by 3.2 per cent in that period.
Those increases were partially offset by a 21.5 per cent fall in electricity prices and a 10.2 per cent drop in automotive fuel prices.
The underlying inflation rate, which excludes the most volatile price changes, fell from 3.5 per cent in October to 3.2 per cent in November.
Australia's central bank, the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA), has a target band for inflation of 2-3 per cent, Xinhua news agency reported.
Responding to the data, Treasurer Jim Chalmers said that headline inflation has now been within the RBA's target band for four consecutive months.
In November, the Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese had declared that the worst of the
country's inflation crisis is over. Albanese had said that the Australians have reason for optimism with new data showing inflation is at its lowest level over three years.
According to official figures published by the Australian Bureau of Statistics in the last week of October 2024, the CPI rose by 0.2 per cent in the third quarter of 2024, spanning from the start of July through the end of September.
It marked the lowest quarterly CPI increase since the threemonth period ending in June 2020.
"I know workers, families, and small businesses have all done it hard, but while there are still challenges to meet, still problems to solve, still people under pressure who need our help, when we look at the economy today, we can see new reasons for optimism and new proof the worst is behind us," said Albanese at an event on November 3.
Australia’s fatal light aircraft crashes claim 27 lives in 2024
Canberra, Jan 6 (IANS) Fatal light aircraft crashes claimed 27 lives in 20 unnecessary accidents last year in Australia after two consecutive years of recording 33 deaths, according to the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB). Despite the decrease in the number of fatalities, the spate of fatal crashes in 2024 caused concern about the future of the hobby aircraft sector, and aviation experts are calling for more thorough investigations into recreational aircraft accidents,
according to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) on Monday.
Aviation consultant and training officer Lorraine MacGillivray said she wanted to see more air crash investigations and less red tape for pilot training following the death of five people in a string of crashes in the state of Victoria between September and November last year, the ABC reported.
However, large passenger carriers received priority when determining what was investigated, said the ATSB Chief Commissioner Angus Mitchell, adding the risk of a fatality was greater around Australia's 2,300 non-towered aerodromes, calling for pilots to remain vigilant to boost safety.
Australia commits additional support for Vanuatu earthquake recovery
Canberra, Jan 11 (IANS)
The Australian government has committed additional humanitarian assistance for Vanuatu following December's deadly earthquake.
Foreign Affairs Minister Penny Wong and Minister for International Development and the Pacific Pat Conroy on Saturday announced a 10 million Australian dollar ($6.1 million) package to support the restoration of essential services and infrastructure in Vanuatu. They said in a joint statement that the package will focus on education, health and transport and will be delivered through local systems and partners.
It builds on the Australian government's initial commitment of seven million Australian dollars ($4.3 million) of practical
humanitarian assistance for the initial earthquake response.
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs estimated that 116,000 people were directly affected by the earthquake.
Earlier, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) also provided 5 million US dollars in contingent disaster financing to support emergency relief efforts in Vanuatu.
The grant came from the fifth phase of the Pacific Disaster Resilience Program, which also supported progress in strengthening the country's capacity to manage and reduce disaster risks.
The program was financed by a 20-million-dollar concessional loan from the ADB's ordinary capital resources and a 21-million-dollar grant from the Asian Development Fund.
The 7.3-magnitude shallow earthquake caused strong shaking near the capital Port Vila, about 30 km from the epicentre, at 12:47 local time on December 17, 2024, with a depth of 43 km, the US Geological Survey said.
PM reiterates social media responsibility after Meta abandons fact-checking
Canberra, Jan 8 (IANS) Australia's Prime Minister Anthony Albanese reiterated social media's social responsibility on Wednesday following Meta's announcement to abandon its fact-checking programme.
The ATSB said it could investigate around 70 aviation, maritime, and rail incidents annually, but was notified of more than 8,000 incidents each year, Xinhua news agency reported.
On September 13, last year, one person had died in a light plane crash in the southeastern Australian state of Victoria.
Victoria Police said that a man died when a light aircraft crashed on private property in Redesdale, a small town approximately 100 kilometers northwest of Melbourne.
In a statement, Victoria Police said that the man, who has not been formally identified, died at the scene of the crash.
The pilot was the only occupant of the aircraft.
"Social media has a social responsibility," Albanese told a press conference held in Mount Isa of the country's northeastern state of Queensland, when responding to Meta's decision not to do fact-checking.
Referring to the criticism that social media will make about Australia's decision and legislation to ban social media for those under 16, Albanese said that is "one that we don't resile from."
"We will stand up for Australia's national interest," he said. The Prime Minister attributed the rise in mental health issues for young people to social media, adding "I say to social media they have a social responsibility and should fulfil it."
Under the world-first law, children and teenagers under
16 in Australia will be banned from using social media from the end of next year. Social media companies could be fined up to 50 million Australian dollars (about $31.17 million) for failing to take "reasonable steps" to keep children under 16 off their platforms. There are no penalties for young people or parents who flout the rules.
Facebook and Instagram owner Meta said on Tuesday that it was scrapping its third-party fact-checking program because expert fact-checkers had their own biases and too much content ended up being fact-checked, Xinhua news agency reported.
Earlier in November 2024, the Bill to ban social media for children under 16 passed the Senate of Australia with bipartisan support. According to the local media, the Bill passed by a comfortable margin, with Labour and most of the Coalition voting together. However, most of the crossbench voted against the Bill.
Social media companies were also prohibited from forcing users to provide government identification, including the Digital ID, to assess their age. "Messaging apps," "online gaming services," and "services with the primary purpose of supporting the health and education of endusers" were excluded from the ban, as were sites like YouTube that did not require users to log in to access the platform.
South Korea: Investigators detain impeached President Yoon over martial law declaration
Seoul, Jan 15 (IANS) Investigators detained impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol at his residence on Wednesday in their second attempt to take him into custody for questioning over his shortlived imposition of martial law.
A warrant to detain Yoon was executed at 10:33 a.m., according to the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials (CIO), marking the first time a sitting president has been arrested, Yonhap news agency reported.
A convoy of vehicles carrying Yoon left the presidential residence compound in central
Seoul shortly afterward to head to the CIO office in Gwacheon, just south of Seoul.
Yoon was seen stepping out of a car and entering the office to undergo questioning before investigators seek a warrant to formally arrest him within 48 hours.
Yoon, who is suspended from duty following his impeachment by the National Assembly on December 14, faces charges of insurrection and abuse of power.
He is accused of sending troops to the National Assembly after declaring martial law on the night of December 3 to stop lawmakers from voting down the decree.
Yoon is expected to be held at the Seoul Detention Center in Uiwang, near the CIO's office, following questioning.
The president has defended his declaration of martial law as an "act of governance" meant to send a warning to the main
opposition Democratic Party over what he described as its abuse of legislative power.
In a recorded video message released after his arrest, Yoon remained defiant, saying, "Although it is an illegal investigation, I decided to agree to appear at the CIO in order to prevent ugly bloodshed."
The arrest followed hours of talks between investigators and Yoon's side at his residence over how to detain him and take him away for questioning.
"At this point, we are not considering his voluntary appearance and our aim is to execute the warrant," a CIO official told reporters earlier.
"Unlike during the first attempt, there were no personnel or Presidential Security Service (PSS) staff actively resisting the execution," the official added.
"There were practically no physical clashes today."
Trump warns Hamas of ‘deadly consequences’ if hostages in Gaza not released before his inauguration
Washington, Jan 8 (IANS) US President-elect Donald Trump has warned that "all hell will break out" if Hamas did not release hostages in Gaza before January 20, when he will be sworn in as the 47th President of the US, offering one more stark indication of how much the incoming President would prefer to avoid inheriting the Israel-Hamas war as he prepares to take office in less than two weeks.
"All hell will break out. If those hostages aren't back, I don't want to hurt your negotiation, if they're not back by the time I get into office, all hell will break out in the Middle East," Trump told reporters on Tuesday at a
news conference in Mar-a-Lago, Florida.
He was responding to a question on the status of negotiations with Hamas on the release of American hostages.
His Special Envoy to the Middle East Steven Charles Witkoff, who has just returned from the region, told reporters that they are on the verge of it.
"I believe we've been on the verge of it. I don't want to discuss sort of what's delayed it, no point in being negative in any way. But I think it's the President, his stature, what he's said he expects, the red lines he's put out there, that's driving this negotiation," Witkoff said.
Noting that they are making a lot of progress, he said: "I don't want to say too much because I think they're doing a really good job back in Doha. I'm leaving tomorrow to go back to Doha. But I think that we've had some really
Who could replace Justin Trudeau as next Canadian PM?
Ottawa, Jan 8 (IANS) The race to be Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's successor began on Tuesday, a day after he resigned amid a looming trade war with the US and a divisive political climate at home.
With the incumbent Liberal Party slumping badly in the polls, whoever wins the leadership contest could find themselves in opposition after the votes are counted, tasked with rebuilding the party.
US President-elect Donald Trump ally Elon Musk has thrown his support behind Trudeau's rival, Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre, for Prime Minister.
Justin Trudeau's announcement that he will step down in the coming months means Canada's Liberal Party needs a new leader. With the government likely to fall when Parliament returns in March, the party will be keen to put someone in place as soon as possible.
The party's national board is due to meet this week to begin the process, which in the past has taken months. Polls indicate the Liberals are on track to lose the election no matter who leads the party, which may put off some potential candidates. In the meantime here's a look at some of the people who may throw their hats into the ring.
Historically, the party has almost exclusively drawn its leaders from Ontario and Quebec, but three of the possible candidates --
Chrystia Freeland, Mark Carney and Christy Clark -- all have ties to western Canada, which could expand the party's appeal in a region-dominated by the Conservatives.
Chrystia Freeland
The former Finance Minister and Deputy Prime Minister is regarded as having triggered Trudeau's resignation announcement by making her own three weeks ago. Once a key ally of the Prime Minister, she stepped down over disagreements with him about how to deal with the incoming Trump administration's threat to impose 25 per cent tariffs on all Canadian goods and services.
In her resignation letter, she was scathing, warning Trudeau against "costly political gimmicks" and warning that the country faced "a grave challenge".
Freeland has established herself as a reliable and longstanding member of Trudeau's Cabinet since he became PM in 2015, serving in several Cabinet portfolios including foreign affairs and international trade. She is known for deftly renegotiating the North American Free Trade Agreement with the first Trump administration, which secured Canadian access to the US market despite Trump's politics.
The former journalist is seen as a frontrunner in the race to replace Trudeau.
Mark Carney
The former Bank of England and Bank of Canada governor has long been floated as a potential cabinet minister, with Trudeau confirming in 2024 that he had been encouraging him to enter federal politics; indeed, relations
between Freeland and Trudeau were also understood to have deteriorated amid allegations he wanted to replace her with Carney.
In a statement on Monday, Carney, 59, said he would be "considering this decision closely with my family over the coming days". His economic credentials at a time of global economic crisis are seen as an asset by some but there is some scepticism about his bid, given he has never held political office before.
Tradition dictates that Carney, now chair of Brookfield Asset Management, would need to secure a seat in parliament in order to take office if he won the party leadership.
François-Philippe Champagne Champagne has served in a number of top cabinet positions since 2018 including foreign affairs and is now the minister of innovation.
He has often been characterised as an "Energiser bunny" and credited with landing several lucrative deals for Canada, including a C$2.8bn deal with Stellantis to boost EV production in Canada and a C$7bn project with Volkswagen to build its first gigafactory outside Europe. That business acumen as well as his reported charm and optimism could serve him well in a Liberal leadership role. He was also born in Quebec, a province that has often been key to winning federal elections.
Melanie Joly
Just weeks before Trudeau's resignation announcement, a US media outlet declared in a lengthy profile piece that the Foreign Minister was a "top contender" to replace him. Its publication
forced her to restate her support for the Prime Minister, although she would not explicitly deny her leadership ambitions.
An Oxford-educated lawyer, she has held the foreign affairs portfolio for three years. That brief has placed her at the centre of Canada's well-documented rows with New Delhi over allegations that Indian diplomats have carried out criminal activities including homicide in Canada, as well as with Beijing over its jailing of two Canadians apparently in retaliation for the arrest of a Chinese executive in Canada.
She has been criticised by some for her approach to those crises, potentially undermining any leadership bid, and a poll cited by CTV News gave her just 4 per cent support but as she told the Times: "It's been the story of my life, you know, being underestimated."
Anita Anand
Elected in 2019, the now Transport Minister quickly took on a pivotal role during the Covid pandemic, with responsibility as procurement minister for buying vaccines and PPE.
She then became Defence Minister, leading Canada's response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine as well as the government's response to a review of sexual misconduct allegations within the military.
Her high-profile portfolios quickly led to speculation about her leadership potential. A 2023 cabinet reshuffle that saw her become president of the Treasury Board prompted rumours of a demotion due to her alleged ambitions.
Dominic LeBlanc
LeBlanc, a longtime Trudeau ally, has previously run for the leadership and reportedly has the support of at least a dozen Liberal MPs. He is widely regarded as a safe pair of hands, taking on tricky portfolios, including stepping in to replace Freeland as Finance Minister after her resignation.
He has also been at the forefront of Canada's attempts to develop relations with the incoming Trump administration, accompanying Trudeau to Trump's Mar-a-Lago resort in November.
Like Trudeau, he is political royalty in Canada; his father was the former governor-general, MP and Senator Romeo LeBlanc. The families' relationship goes back decades -- LeBlanc babysat for Trudeau when they were younger and he was a pallbearer at the funeral of his father, the former Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau. LeBlanc chose not to run in the 2012 leadership race when Trudeau made his ambitions known.
Christy Clark Clark, the former premier of British Columbia, has also emerged as a possible contender given her past experience -- and her distance from Trudeau.
A fiscally conservative politician, Clark served as premier from 2011 to 2017 and leader of the BC Liberal party which is unaffiliated with the federal Liberals.
A strong critic of Trudeau, Clark posted on social media soon after the Prime Minister announced his resignation.
"As a lifelong Liberal I look forward to joining tens of thousands of Canadians to choose our next leader," she wrote.
Gotta pay for it: Trump threatens to use ‘economic force’ to make Canada 51st state; Trudeau reacts
Florida, Jan 8 (IANS) US
President-elect Donald Trump has proposed the idea of using "economic force" to merge Canada and the United States, creating what he frequently describes as the "51st state."
He cited reasons such as military assistance provided by the US and trade deficits between the two nations to support his suggestion. Addressing a press conference at his Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida on Tuesday, Trump said, "You get rid of that artificially drawn line, and you take a look at what that looks like, and it would also be much better for national security."
"Canada and the United States, that would really be something.
We've been good neighbours, but we can't do it forever," he added. Emphasising the financial burden on the US, Trump said, "Don't forget, we basically protect Canada. But here's the problem with Canada. So many friends up there; I love the Canadian people. They're great, but we're spending hundreds of billions a year to protect it. We're spending hundreds of billions a year to take care of Canada. We lose in trade deficits."
Trump reiterated his plan to impose "substantial" tariffs on goods from both Canada and Mexico.
"Canada is subsidised to the tune of about $200 billion a year, plus other things. And they don't essentially have a military. They have a very small military. They rely on our military. It's all fine, but you know they gotta pay for that," he added.
In a social media post on Truth
Social, Trump shared an edited image of Canada as part of the US, captioning it, "Oh Canada."
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau dismissed the suggestion, responding firmly, "There isn't a snowball's chance in hell that Canada would become part of the United States. Workers and communities in both our countries benefit from being each other's biggest trading and security partners."
Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly also criticised Trump's remarks, accusing him of a "lack of understanding" about Canada. She stated that Canada would "never back down" from such threats.
Trump has repeatedly floated the idea of a US-Canada "merger" since his presidential election victory in November. He has often referred to Trudeau as the "Governor" of the "Great State of Canada" in a mocking tone.
Beginning of the end for Trudeau and his vindictive anti-India politics
New Delhi, Jan 6 (IANS) As Justin Trudeau announced on Monday that he will step down as the Canadian Prime Minister and Liberal leader once his party has chosen a new leader, the countdown has begun for a significant shift in the Canadian politics and, at the same time, also ignited some hope of the strained bilateral relationship between India and Canada, that hit rock bottom in 2024, getting an opportunity to improve this year. The ties between India and Canada soured after Trudeau alleged in the Canadian Parliament last year that he has "credible allegations" of India's hand in the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.
A major diplomatic row erupted when Canada labelled India's High Commissioner and other diplomats as "persons of interest" in the investigation of Nijjar's death.
India denied all the allegations, calling them "absurd" and "motivated", accusing Ottawa of giving space to extremist and anti-India elements in the country.
In October, Trudeau, while testifying before Canada's foreign interference inquiry, admitted that India has been insisting on evidence over allegations levelled by Canada regarding the killing of Khalistani terrorist but his government had provided just intelligence, "not hard evidentiary
proof."
Reacting strongly, India said that it only "confirms" New Delhi's consistent stand that Canada has "presented us no evidence" in support of the serious allegations Ottawa chose to level against India and Indian diplomats.
"The responsibility for the damage that this cavalier behaviour has caused to India-Canada relations lies with Prime Minister Trudeau alone," said Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal.
As the Khalistani extremists in Canada openly targeted Hindus and their places of worship in the country, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also broke silence on the Canadian government's leniency towards these groups, including expressions of support from Trudeau that emboldened such factions.
"I strongly condemn the deliberate attack on a Hindu temple in Canada. Equally appalling are the cowardly attempts to intimidate our diplomats. Such acts of violence will never weaken India's resolve. We expect the Canadian government to ensure justice and uphold the rule of law," PM Modi posted on X in November.
Experts reckoned that PM Modi's explicit message served as a warning not only to Khalistani activists but also the Canadian government.
"Canada is on notice. Just to place this in context, the sentence 'such acts of violence will never weaken India's resolve' in PM Modi's post is as explicit a message as it gets that the Khalistanis in Canada are state-sponsored anti-India groups of thugs, criminals and
Los Angeles wildfires: 25 dead, 92,000 people under evacuation
Los Angeles, Jan 14 (IANS) About 92,000 people remain under mandatory evacuation orders and 25 dead due to the Los Angeles wildfires in the western US, and another 89,000 are under evacuation warnings, Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna told reporters.
At least 25 people have died and more than a dozen others remain unaccounted for as multiple wildfires rage across the Los Angeles area.

terrorists," an analyst opined. Trudeau was also continuously slammed, rebuked and trolled in his own backyard.
Ripping into Justin Trudeau for massively failing to control the rising Sikh extremism, former Premier of British Columbia Ujjal Dosanjh said that the Canadian Prime Minister, like some other politicians of the country, is pandering to a "well-orchestrated Sikh vote" to tip the balance in close elections.
"Trudeau, sociologically and politically, is an idiot, and you can actually quote me. I really don't care. Because he's an imbecile in terms of understanding how you build nations, how you build countries," Dosanjh told Canada's National Post in an interview on November 4 last year that appeared on the day Khalistani extremists attacked Hindu devotees at the Hindu Sabha Temple in Brampton.
The 78-year-old, who also served as Minister of Health in Paul Martin’s Liberal government, laid the blame squarely on Trudeau for fanning the Khalistani separatist movement to the point where it has become a major Canadian problem.
"He's never really understood that the vast majority of Sikhs are quite secular in their outlook, despite the fact that they go to the temple. Khalistanis are not a majority, and the fact nobody speaks against them is out of fear. Through intimidation, Khalistani supporters control many of the gurdwaras in Canada. It's Trudeau's fault that Canadians now equate Khalistanis with Sikhs, as if we are all Khalistanis if we're Sikhs," he said.

Seoul, Jan 14 (IANS) North Korea launched multiple short-range ballistic missiles toward the East Sea on Tuesday, South Korea's military said, in a provocation staged just days before US President-elect Donald Trump takes office.
The Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said it detected the launches at about 9:30 a.m. from the Ganggye area in the North's Jagang Province and they flew about 250 kilometres before splashing into the sea. It did not specify the number of missiles fired.
Tuesday's launches marked the recalcitrant regime's second provocation this year, after it fired what it claimed to be a hypersonic intermediate-range ballistic missile on January 6.
Given the flight distance of shortrange ballistic missiles, they are usually seen as targeting South Korea. North Korea also fired multiple short-range ballistic missiles on November 5 last
year, just hours ahead of the US presidential election.
In a year-end party meeting, North Korea declared it would carry out the 'toughest' counteraction strategy toward the United States, claiming military cooperation among South Korea, the US and Japan has expanded into a "military bloc for aggression."The JCS condemned the latest launch as a 'blatant' provocation that threatens peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula, and vowed to maintain a firm readiness posture against the possibility of North Korea making a 'wrong judgment.' "In preparation against additional launches, our military has strengthened our monitoring and vigilance, while closely sharing information on the North Korean missile with the US and Japanese sides and maintaining a full readiness posture," the JCS said. The JCS said it is monitoring the possibility of additional missile launches, noting it detected transporter erector launchers for firing missiles near the launch site, Yonhap news agency reported.
From the editor’s desk Australia at a crossroads: The debate over Dutton’s defense strategy
The Australian economy has entered the new year grappling with significant currency fluctuations and mounting inflation concerns. These movements in the Australian dollar are more than just numbers in the financial markets; they hold profound implications for businesses, households, and policymakers alike. As we delve into this complex economic landscape, it becomes clear that Australia’s response to these challenges will shape not only the nation’s financial stability but also its social fabric in the years to come.
The current volatility of the Australian dollar is a result of a confluence of domestic and international factors. Globally, the economic slowdown in China has played a critical role. As Australia’s largest trading partner, China’s demand for Australian exports such as iron ore and coal significantly influences the dollar’s value.
The recent cooling of the Chinese economy, coupled with ongoing geopolitical tensions, has led to reduced demand for Australian goods, thereby weakening the currency. In addition, uncertainties in global markets—ranging from fluctuating oil prices to interest rate hikes in major economies— have added further pressure.
Domestically, the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) has found itself walking a tightrope.
Determined to tame inflation, the RBA has maintained a firm stance on interest rates, keeping them higher than many might have anticipated. While this approach may curb inflation in the long term, it has amplified short-term financial strain, especially for households and businesses grappling with rising costs. This monetary policy, combined with tepid economic growth, has created a challenging environment for the Australian dollar, which continues to fluctuate unpredictably.
A weaker currency has significant implications for inflation. For an economy heavily reliant on imports, a depreciating dollar means higher costs for goods and services sourced from abroad. From fuel to everyday groceries, Australians are feeling the pinch as prices rise across the board. What exacerbates this situation is the stagnation of wages. While prices climb, household incomes remain largely unchanged, eroding purchasing power and stretching family budgets to their limits. This mismatch between rising costs and stagnant earnings is not just an economic concern; it is
a social one, as financial stress deepens among vulnerable populations.
Certain sectors of the economy are bearing the brunt of these developments more acutely than others. Retailers, for instance, are grappling with increased costs for imported goods. Faced with the difficult choice of absorbing these costs or passing them on to consumers, many businesses are opting for the latter, further fueling inflationary pressures. Meanwhile, reduced consumer spending, a natural consequence of rising prices, is compounding the struggles of the retail sector, which is already navigating postpandemic recovery challenges. However, it is not all doom and gloom. A weaker Australian dollar does bring opportunities for some industries. The tourism sector, for instance, could see a resurgence as Australia becomes a more affordable destination for international visitors. Similarly, the education sector may benefit from increased demand from overseas students seeking to take advantage of favorable exchange rates. Yet, even these potential upsides are tempered by broader economic uncertainties, which cast a shadow over their long-term viability.
The government’s response to these challenges has been met with mixed reactions. Targeted subsidies and support measures for low-income households, while well-intentioned, have faced criticism for being insufficient in addressing the scale of the problem. There is a growing call for more comprehensive policies that not only provide immediate relief but also address systemic issues contributing to economic inequality. The balance between short-term intervention and long-term reform will be key to navigating this crisis effectively. Beyond the economic ramifications, the social implications of inflation and currency instability are profound. Rising costs disproportionately impact low-income households, exacerbating inequality and increasing the risk of social unrest. Financial insecurity also takes a toll on mental health, with more Australians reporting heightened stress, anxiety, and depression. These challenges demand a response that goes beyond economics, incorporating social policies that prioritize the well-being of the population.
Peter Dutton’s recent promise to boost military spending significantly if he becomes Australia’s Prime Minister has sparked intense discussions in political, social, and economic circles. Presented as a key element of his election campaign, this initiative aims to establish Australia as a more formidable regional power, able to protect its national interests and strengthen global partnerships. However, behind the bold statements is a complicated array of potential outcomes that deserve careful scrutiny.
Dutton’s dedication to strengthening Australia’s defense capabilities is in line with a wider strategy aimed at attracting voters who are worried about national security. By focusing on military power, he intends to position himself as a strong leader who can adeptly handle an increasingly unpredictable global situation. This approach sharply contrasts with the current government’s stance, which has been criticized by some for its perceived lack of urgency in tackling the rising threats in the Indo-Pacific region. The ongoing debate about whether Dutton’s strategy is a true vision for the future or a calculated political tactic continues to split opinions among analysts and citizens. At the heart of Dutton’s proposal is a significant increase in the defense budget, intended to modernize military equipment, strengthen cyber defense systems, and enhance support for allied operations. Although exact figures are not yet available, the commitment to increased spending has led to discussions about its viability and potential effects. For a nation already dealing with economic issues, including inflation and rising living costs, the idea of allocating more funds to defense raises concerns about financial tradeoffs. Will this strategy result in cuts to essential public services like healthcare and education, or will it require tax increases for regular Australians? These are important questions that need clear answers before voters can evaluate the real cost of Dutton’s vision.
The main issue in this debate is how funds are allocated. Dutton’s focus on upgrading military technology highlights an awareness of the evolving threats we face, especially in the cyber domain. In an age where digital warfare can be as dangerous as traditional conflicts, investing in advanced technologies is certainly crucial. However, if these investments are made without a comprehensive strategy, it could lead to inefficient spending or worsen existing inequalities within the military. It will be vital to ensure that resources are distributed fairly among
the navy, air force, and army to prevent creating imbalances that could undermine operational effectiveness.
A significant part of Dutton’s proposal is its emphasis on enhancing alliances with crucial partners, including the United States and Israel. Initiatives like joint military exercises and intelligence-sharing agreements are likely to strengthen Australia’s strategic position. Nevertheless, this approach carries certain risks. Becoming too closely aligned with specific nations could strain ties with others, particularly in a geopolitically sensitive area like the IndoPacific. For example, an assertive military posture might provoke neighbouring countries or contribute to an arms race that destabilizes the region instead of ensuring its security.
The possible economic advantages of raising defense spending should be carefully considered. Putting money into the defense sector could lead to job creation, foster innovation, and promote the growth of advanced technologies that can benefit civilian life. However, it’s essential to evaluate these pros against the wider economic impact. Detractors argue that investing heavily in defense might take focus away from urgent domestic issues, like housing costs and climate change. Striking a balance between national security needs and the welfare of citizens will require thoughtful discussion, particularly in a democracy where public opinion is influential.
When it comes to military spending, public opinion in Australia is quite polarized. Some Australians argue that it is a vital measure for national protection in a world filled with uncertainties, while others challenge the ethical considerations of placing defense above social welfare initiatives. The dangers of increased militarization and its potential effects on Australia’s identity as a peaceful and inclusive country are important factors to consider. Engaging in thoughtful discussions with a variety of stakeholders, including veterans, defense experts, and everyday citizens, will be essential for reaching a consensus and making sure that policy decisions reflect the broader community's values. Ethical considerations also apply on a global scale. Historically, Australia, as a middle power, has played a positive role in fostering diplomacy and international cooperation. Dutton’s emphasis on military strength brings up concerns about whether this focus on hard power could overshadow the commitment to peaceful engagement. By exploring alternative national security strategies, such as investing in diplomacy, conflict
prevention, and regional partnerships, Australia could adopt a more balanced approach that addresses threats while avoiding increased tensions. Those who criticize Dutton’s plan argue that it tends to oversimplify complex security challenges by focusing mainly on military aspects. History shows us many cases where countries that adopted aggressive defense strategies found themselves embroiled in conflicts or facing economic crises. To prevent such outcomes, a more nuanced strategy is needed—one that merges military preparedness with non-military approaches. For example, tackling the root causes of regional instability, like economic inequality and climate change, could help reduce the chances of conflict and strengthen long-term security. Dutton’s commitment has its advantages. His awareness of new threats, especially in the cyber realm, shows a progressive mindset that recognizes the evolving landscape of warfare. Additionally, his focus on bolstering alliances highlights the significance of collective security in our interconnected world. However, turning these concepts into actionable policies will demand more than just words. It will be crucial to have clear strategies, open decision-making processes, and accountability to guarantee that the rise in defense spending results in real benefits instead of merely serving as a political talking point.
The implications of this debate extend well beyond Australia. As nations globally confront similar issues regarding the role of military power in a swiftly changing world, Australia’s decisions could act as a case study in how to balance national security with other essential priorities. The effectiveness of Dutton’s vision in achieving this balance will rely not only on the specifics of his proposals but also on the willingness of policymakers, citizens, and allies to engage in productive dialogue.
As Australia nears a crucial juncture in its political journey, Dutton’s promise of increased military spending brings both opportunities and challenges. This vision intends to elevate the nation as a more formidable and resilient player on the world stage, yet it also provokes significant questions about the type of society Australians wish to cultivate. Tackling these complexities will require not only decisive leadership but also a strong commitment to inclusivity, transparency, and ethical responsibility. In a landscape where security threats are both varied and unpredictable, achieving the right balance will be vital for shaping a future that is secure and fair.
Terrorism on the US soil
New Delhi: The terror attack carried out by an ISIS convert -- Shamsuddin Jabbar -- at New Orleans's famed Bourbon Street on New Year's Day, has drawn attention to the reality that Islamic radical forces were down but not out and were present across the world as 'sleeper cells' and 'lone wolves' determined to execute their plans -- primarily against the US-led West and their allies.
Terrorism by definition is a resort to 'covert' violence for a perceived political 'cause', calling for a degree of 'commitment' that was determined by 'motivation'.
Since the faith-based motivation behind the call of Jehad could be very strong indeed, it is not surprising that a 'radicalised' mind could even take on a 'suicide mission' like what Shamsuddin did.
He is said to be a lone wolf according to the evidence surfacing so far.
Born in Texas -- Shamsuddin had rented an accommodation in New Orleans to plan the attack. Given the seriousness of the incident, US President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden visited New Orleans to meet the families of the victims.
In the background of this case of terrorism on US soil, three serious developments would add to the geopolitical concerns of President-elect Donald Trump. First, it is reported that in recent months a few terror suspects were already on the radar of the FBI from which it could be inferred that the US was not beyond the reach of Islamic radicals, particularly at a time when cyber channels and social media were being freely used for indoctrination of vulnerable citizens.
The challenge for American security agencies had suddenly enlarged as they have the responsibility of unearthing all such channels and neutralising them -- this in fact is the case with the security setup of all democratic countries as well.
The second notable feature of this case is that the perpetrator of terror was an Army veteran who had served in Afghanistan for a
truck to run over the crowds on pavements celebrating New Year's Day and opened indiscriminate fire killing a total of 14 innocent people and injuring 35 others.
He had loaded the truck at his home place in Texas with automatic arms, explosives and IEDs and reportedly planted two of the IEDs at important junctions in New Orleans city hiding them in coolers.
are close allies of the US and they have been amenable to the mediation by the US for getting them to join the so-called Abrahamic accord with Israel.
Islamic radical forces are hostile to Saudi Arabia because of the latter's closeness to the US.
Iran's hostility towards Saudi Arabia is for political reasons and also because of the Shia-Sunni religious contradiction.
spell, remained in active service till 2015 and reportedly put in his papers in 2020 as Staff Sergeant.
His case showed that 'radicalisation' can influence even educated and reasonably wellemployed persons and not only the poor and the frustrated youth -- Jabbar though was said to be in financial trouble after his first divorce.
In one of the videos made before the incident, he talked of the 'war between the believers and nonbelievers' and acknowledged his allegiance to ISIS.
A leaflet of ISIS was said to have been recovered from the back of his truck.
It may be mentioned that the 'war on terror' led by the US following 9/11, was essentially an American combat against Islamic radicals headed by Al Qaeda in Afghanistan and its competitor, the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) in the second theatre of the said 'war'.
In Afghanistan despite the 'war on terror', the US was compelled to withdraw its troops from there after getting into an agreement with the Taliban backed by Al Qaeda and witnessing the reinstallation of the Kabul Emirate headed by Taliban, in 2021.
That Pakistan had cleverly played a mediatory role at Doha and helped the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan intending to acquire 'strategic depth' against India, is another story.
Shamsuddin Jabbar must have watched with possible admiration how Islamic radicals had stood their grounds against the might of the 'US-led world coalition'.
This draws attention to the third aspect of the New Orleans episode which is that the terrorist in this case became an admirer of ISIS rather than Al Qaeda because it is ISIS that had become the face of Islamic radical forces -after Osama bin Laden and his successor in Al Qaeda, Ayaman Al Zawahiri, had been eliminated by the US in special military operations.
The attack at New Orleans fully conformed to the modus operandi of terrorists.
The attacker used a rented pickup
He had the detonators with him which he could not use before he died in the encounter with the Police. Shamsuddin shared the hatred radical forces like Al Qaeda and ISIS had for the US -today's Islamic radicals carry the historical legacy of the Wahhabi Jehad that the leading Ulema of the times had called for in the 19th century, against the Western encroachment on Muslim lands. Wahhabis contended that Islam was suffering a political decline after a thousand years of its advancement because Muslim rulers had deviated from the puritan Islam that existed in the times of the four 'pious' caliphs. The call for Jehad thus was accompanied by the revivalist idea of a return to the original Islamic practices and mandate. 'Radicalisation' bred faith-based terrorism which could be checked if a voice against it arose from within the community itself -- a consensus needed to emerge in the Islamic world that terrorist violence cannot be justified on any ground.
It is important to note that the appearance of a new Cold War on the horizon between the US on one hand and the China-Russia axis on the other -- which is basically a political divide -- was getting bolstered by religionbased alignments, particularly in the Middle East.
Iran is anti-US because Shia fundamentalism is against Capitalism -- it has brought the radicalised Hamas under its embrace since Sunni radicals also considered the US-led West as their first enemy.
Bashar Al Assad, the Syrian President was an Alawite Shia who enjoyed the support of Iran whereas the US backed the antiAssad civil war of Islamic forces that were on the right side of the West.
They carried the historical memory of the rise of the Muslim Brotherhood movement in Syria and Egypt in 1928 in opposition to the 'nationalist pro-Soviet' Arab rulers of these countries at that time.
Islamic radical forces were on their own fighting against the present Assad regime separately, for establishing an Emirate in Syria.
Russia and China, unsurprisingly, backed the Syrian President because of their political opposition to the US. Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Kuwait
Significantly, ISIS felt offended by the Russian support to Bashar Al Assad and its regional face -- ISIS-K --carried out a terror attack on a concert hall in Moscow in March last using grenades and automatic rifles as a result of which 130 persons were killed and hundreds of others injured.
The Moscow attack was also possibly meant to administer a warning to Russia -- after the happenings in Chechnya -- not to come in the way of the spread of 'radicalisation' in Central Asia.
In the backdrop of the Russian invasion of Afghanistan and the subsequent success of the antiSoviet armed campaign there -- which was run on the war cry of Jehad and in which Islamic radical forces led by Al Qaeda were also fully involved -- the antipathy of ISIS towards Russia is understandable.
It is on the eve of swearing in of Donald Trump as the new President of the US that a major terror strike has been reported from that country.
The President-elect has not yet given out the framework of his national strategy but among the few indicators of the same available so far, his denunciation of faith-based terrorism comes off as the most unambiguous element of his policy approach. Trump is not -- judging from his record -- an advocate of European Union and NATO and this might help him to elicit a Russian response of moderation in the Ukraine-Russia war.
On Israel's action in Gaza, Trump might like Israel to 'declare victory' early enough so that the Palestinian issue did not remain an ongoing irritant on the domestic front.
The new President would have taken cognisance of the adverse fallout of 'radicalisation' on American interests and realised that terrorism was a concern both the US and India faced as the two largest democracies.
This should favour the continuance of strategic friendship between India and the US -- that India understands what lay at the roots of radicalisation should further help this relationship.
India's security concerns revolve a lot around the Sino-Pak axis that was now actively engaged in covert operations against this country -- use of Chinese drones by Pakistan to drop arms and narcotics in the border states of Punjab and Kashmir being a telling illustration of how these two hostile neighbours were trying to damage India's internal security.
It has to be seen how the Trump Presidency would look at Pakistan, a country that remained under the sway of an army with a highly ambiguous approach to Islamic radical forces.
Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) is trying to push Pakistan towards a more fundamentalist Islamic rule.
It may be mentioned that Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) where TTP is entrenched was the epicentre of the anti-British 'Wahhabi revolt' on the Indian subcontinent which had left this territory highly radicalised.
India's foreign policy framework of favouring bilateral and even multilateral friendships on the basis of shared security and economic interests, looking at the world as a multipolar order and speaking up for global peace and development of humanity, should fit in well with the Trump Presidency.
The 'America First' doctrine of Trump may be designed more to serve the US economic interests and may not necessarily go with an 'interventionist' approach or a tendency to call the shots militarily in various theatres of conflict.
The 'country first' outlook need not create an Indo-US contradiction.
Moreover, India is a leader in Information Technology and it can be presumed that it will hold its ground in the emerging sphere of Artificial Intelligence (AI) as well.
India and the US can together take the cause of the 'knowledge economy' forward for the general good of the world. Post-Cold War, we are in the era of 'proxy wars' where frontal military attacks are giving way to 'covert' offensives designed to weaken and vanquish the opponent.
Apart from cyber attacks, externally instigated separatist movements, insurgencies fuelled from outside and the use of social media as a weapon of combat by building 'narratives' through misinformation and deepfakes to bring down a regime, are the new variants of 'asymmetric warfare' that added to the challenge of safeguarding national security. Friendly countries must understand each other's concerns in this regard.
International cooperation must be strengthened against the threats of terrorism, narcotics trade and human trafficking and hopefully, India and the Trump administration will find themselves on the same side of the fence in handling these global issues.

Only pious souls go to Kumbh, not the sinners: Ramvilas Das Vedanti
estimates, Maha Kumbh may generate Rs 2 lakh crore in trade if each of 40 crore visitors spends an average of Rs 5,000.
Industry estimates further say that the average expenditure per person could rise to even Rs 10,000 at the mega event, and the total economic impact could reach Rs 4 lakh crore.

Public sector giant Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) has supplied approximately 45,000 tonnes of steel for the construction of various structures at the Maha Kumbh Mela 2025. Prayagraj has undergone a major makeover ahead of the biggest congregation of the followers of Sanatan Dharma.
Ayodhya, Jan 12 (IANS)
Peethadheeshwar of Hindu Dham Ayodhya, Ramvilas Das Vedanti, sharply targeted Lok Sabha MP Chandrashekhar Azad during an interview with IANS on Sunday. Vedanti said, "Only pious souls go to the Mahakumbh, not sinners." He further stated that sinners cannot go to the Kumbh. They have been prohibited from attending the Kumbh. Only pious souls are allowed to go there, not sinners.
This remark came after Lok Sabha MP Chandrashekhar Azad made a controversial statement regarding the upcoming Mahakumbh, which will begin in Prayagraj on January 13. The MP had said that only
those who are sinners will go to the Kumbh to wash off their sins. He also mentioned that there is jungle raj in Uttar Pradesh and no one knows when their life will be at risk. He even stated that he had received threats to his life.
In response to a question, Vedanti stated that the glory of Bharat Mata has been upheld by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. The security of our nation can only be ensured if we protect the honour of “Bharat Mata”.
When asked about the Waqf Board, he said that to protect Bharat Mata's glory, the Waqf Board should be abolished immediately. He appealed to people to live in harmony.
Regarding the Mahakumbh, Vedanti said that rumours were being spread. He clarified that there has never been a Muslim camp at the Kumbh in its history. He accused Owaisi of starting this issue to create division between Hindus and Muslims. He called Owaisi a traitor and suggested he should be expelled from India.
A divine journey at the world’s largest spiritual gathering
From Australia India News Newsdesk
The soft rays of the January sun illuminate the sprawling sands of Prayagraj, where millions of devotees have already gathered. This is the Maha Kumbh Mela, a sacred event celebrated every 12 years at the confluence of the holy rivers Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati. The sheer scale of this spiritual congregation, often referred to as the largest in the world, is overwhelming. With over 400 million pilgrims expected to attend in 2025, the Kumbh Mela is not just a religious event—it’s a phenomenon that encapsulates faith, tradition, and cultural vibrancy.
A sacred legacy rooted in mythology
The Maha Kumbh is steeped in history and mythology. Its origins trace back to the tale of the Samudra Manthan, the celestial churning of the ocean by gods and demons in their quest for Amrita, the nectar of immortality. Legend has it that four drops of this nectar fell on Earth—at Prayagraj, Haridwar, Ujjain, and Nashik— making these places eternally sacred. The Maha Kumbh, held in Prayagraj every 12 years, is
the most auspicious of these celebrations, drawing millions of pilgrims seeking purification and blessings.
The call of the Triveni Sangam
The spiritual heart of the Kumbh Mela is the Triveni Sangam, the confluence of the three holy rivers. Standing at this sacred juncture is an experience that words can scarcely capture. For the faithful, bathing in these waters is an act of cleansing the soul, a way to wash away sins and attain liberation from the cycle of life and death.
Transforming Prayagraj: A temporary metropolis
Hosting an event of this magnitude requires a herculean effort. Prayagraj has transformed into a city within a city, with a sprawling tent township to accommodate millions. From clean sanitation facilities and makeshift hospitals to extensive food arrangements, every detail has been meticulously planned. Over 150,000 tents have been set up, ranging from basic shelters to luxury accommodations for international visitors. A robust network of 20,000 sanitation workers ensures the grounds remain clean, while 11 temporary
hospitals provide medical care. The local authorities have deployed advanced surveillance systems, with drones and over 2,500 cameras ensuring safety. Moments of faith: The Shahi Snan
One of the most captivating sights of the Kumbh is the Shahi Snan, or royal bath. On specific dates deemed auspicious, processions of Naga sadhus—ascetics covered in ash and wearing garlands— march toward the Sangam. Their chants, vibrant flags, and spiritual fervor create an electrifying atmosphere.
Key bathing dates, such as Makar Sankranti (January 14) and Mauni Amavasya (February 9), see the largest crowds. On these days, the Sangam becomes a sea of humanity, with millions taking the holy dip in unison.
A cultural and technological marvel
Beyond its religious significance, the Maha Kumbh Mela highlights India’s rich cultural tradition. From devotional music and folk dances to exhibitions of traditional crafts, the event is a feast for the senses. What’s unique about the 2025 Kumbh is the integration of technology.
Mobile apps guide visitors through the sprawling grounds, offering directions to ghats, rest areas, and medical tents. For those unable to attend, livestreamed rituals and virtual tours provide a glimpse of the festivities, ensuring no one misses out on the spiritual experience.
Balancing faith and sustainability
The influx of millions poses a challenge to the local environment, particularly the rivers. However, significant efforts have been made to balance tradition with conservation. Clean Ganga initiatives ensure the waters remain unpolluted, with strict regulations on waste disposal and awareness campaigns promoting ecofriendly practices.
Pilgrims are encouraged to use biodegradable offerings, while volunteers tirelessly work to keep the banks of the Sangam pristine. “This is not just about faith; it’s about preserving the sanctity of our heritage,” says environmentalist Ramesh Gupta, who has been actively involved in the clean-up drives.
Unity in diversity
The Maha Kumbh Mela is more than a religious event—it’s a symbol of India’s unity in diversity. People from every corner of the country, speaking different languages and following varied traditions, come together with a common purpose. Whether it’s sharing meals, chanting prayers, or simply walking alongside one another, the sense of community is palpable. A journey that transcends time As the Maha Kumbh Mela 2025 unfolds, it continues to captivate hearts and minds. It is a journey that transcends religion, connecting people with their inner selves and the divine. For those who attend, it is more than a pilgrimage; it is a testament to the enduring power of faith, culture, and human connection. Whether you come seeking spiritual solace, cultural immersion, or simply the experience of a lifetime, the Maha Kumbh Mela offers something truly extraordinary. As millions gather under the open sky by the sacred Sangam, they carry with them a timeless message: that faith knows no boundaries, and the divine resides in all.

Taking to X, President Murmu shared, "On the auspicious occasion of Lohri, Makar Sankranti, Pongal, and Magh Bihu, I extend my heartfelt greetings to all Indian people living in the country and abroad. These festivals are a symbol of our rich cultural heritage and unity in diversity. These festivals celebrated in different regions of India express respect for nature."
Highlighting the agricultural significance of these celebrations, she added, "These festivals related to agriculture are also opportunities to express gratitude to our farmers for their tireless hard work. I wish that this holy festival brings happiness and prosperity in the life of every person."
Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar also conveyed his greetings, posting on X, "Warm wishes on the auspicious occasion of Lohri, Makar Sankranti, Magha Bihu, and Pongal. These festivals, each uniquely celebrated across our nation's diverse landscapes, represent our age-old tradition of honouring the harvest season."
"May the sacred flames of Lohri and Magha Bihu dispel all adversity, may the soaring kites of Makar Sankranti fill our hearts with jubilation, and may the traditional sweetness of Pongal bring forth moments of
Bihu
celebration and happiness," he added.
These traditional harvest festivals, celebrated across India, showcase the country's unity in diversity. Makar Sankranti, also known as Uttarayana, marks the transition of the sun from the zodiac sign of Sagittarius (Dhanu) to Capricorn (Makara). Observed annually on January 14 (or January 15 in leap years), the festival signifies the sun's northward movement, dedicated to the solar deity, Surya, and symbolising new beginnings.
The celebrations are marked by colourful decorations, kite flying, and community gatherings. Rural children in some regions go house to house singing songs and collecting treats.
The festivals also mark the change in seasons, signalling the departure of winter and the arrival of spring, filling hearts with hope and joy.

These traditional festivals, celebrated with great enthusiasm and rejoicing, provide us a pious occasion to salute the indomitable spirit of our hardworking farmers and to recognise their invaluable contribution to J&K's growth. May these festivals bring prosperity and joy to all.”
Lohri and Makar Sankranti are significant harvest festivals in India that signify the end of winter and the beginning of spring. Lohri, particularly observed in Punjab and other northern regions, involves bonfires, dancing, and sharing food. Makar Sankranti, celebrated in various northern Indian states like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Jharkhand, focuses on prayers and acts of charity.

Lohri is a major festival for the Sikh community, particularly celebrated in Punjab and Haryana. It marks the harvesting of Rabi crops and the end of winter. On this day, prayers are offered to Lohri Mata. In the evening, friends, relatives, and families gather around a bonfire, circling it while offering jaggery, peanuts, rewari, gajak, and popcorn as part of the ritual. Pongal, on the other hand, is dedicated to the Sun God. According to tradition, it signifies the end of the winter solstice and the beginning of the sun’s six-month-long northward journey (Uttarayan). A sweet dish called Pongal is prepared for the occasion and first offered to the deities. Sometimes, cows are also given the prasad, after which it is shared with family members.

Anand Jain-promoted Jai Corp Ltd. informed the stock exchange that Urban Infrastructure Holdings Pvt. Ltd., a firm in which his company holds 32 per cent, is convening an extraordinary general meeting (EGM) of shareholders to approve capital reduction proposed by the company.
The company informed the stock exchange that the subsidiary of Urban Infrastructure Holdings Pvt. Ltd., i.e., Dronagiri Infrastructure Pvt. Ltd. (DIPL), sold its 74 per cent stake in Navi Mumbai IIA Pvt. Ltd. for Rs 1,628.03 crore, valuing the company at Rs 2,200 crore to Reliance Industries Ltd.
Mukesh Ambani-led RIL informed the exchanges on December 13, 2024, that pursuant to the waiver of the first right of refusal by the City and Industrial Development Corporation of Maharashtra Ltd. (CIDCO), it has bought 57.12 crore equity shares representing 74 per cent of Navi Mumbai IIA Private Limited (NMIIA), formerly called Navi Mumbai SEZ, at a price of Rs 28.50 per equity share,
aggregating Rs 1,628.03 crore, valuing the 5,286-acre project at an equity value of Rs 2,200 crore.
After the acquisition, NMIIA became a 74 per cent subsidiary of the company, it said in a disclosure to the stock exchange.
NMIIA was incorporated on June 15, 2004, and is engaged in developing the Integrated Industrial Area (IIA) in Maharashtra. Navi Mumbai IIA Pvt. Ltd. in the financial year ending March 2018 was allowed by the Maharashtra government to be converted from an SEZ into an Integrated Industrial Area (IIA).
NMIIA has been appointed as the Special Planning Authority for the notified areas of Dronagiri, Kalambol.
The Navi Mumbai SEZ was once said to be estimated as having an economic potential of over Rs 1 lakh crore after the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (Atal Setu) and Navi Mumbai Airport get operational.
NMIIA is a strategically located industrial zone as it is in close proximity to the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport, the Jawaharlal Nehru Port, the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link and the Mumbai-Pune Highway. RIL, in its statement, said that the investment is not a related party transaction and none of the company’s promoters, the promoter group, or group companies have any interest in the above transaction.
But Urban Infrastructure Holdings Private Ltd. (UIHPL) is owned 33 per cent by Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance group companies, 32 per cent by Jai Corp Group led by Anand Jain and SKIL Infrastructure, which is currently under NCLT proceedings, held 35 per cent as per its annual report for the financial year ending March 2023, according to credit rating agency Care Ratings, which

Urban Infrastructure Holdings Private Ltd. held a 99 per cent stake in Dronagiri Infrastructure, which owns 74 per cent in Navi Mumbai IIA Pvt Ltd. The remaining stake is held by the government agency CIDCO. According to the SKIL Infrastructure website, Navi Mumbai IIA achieved financial closure for 2,140 hectare (approx 5286 acre) and is currently developing the site. It said the company is the lead consortium member for Navi Mumbai IIA Ltd., with the balance of equity held by Reliance Group Investment and Holding Private Ltd., a Mukesh Dhirubhai Ambani Group company.
Dronagiri Infrastructure was scheduled to convene a shareholder meeting on January 2, seeking approval for reduction of share capital.

Out of this, owners of Urban Infrastructure have already received the promoter’s contribution towards equity of Rs 1,597 crore. By Dr Ram Mohan, Editor
As an Indian living abroad, I found the chance to take part in the Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas (PBD) 2025, taking place in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, from January 8–10, to be an amazing opportunity. This event, organized by India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) and the Government of Odisha, celebrated the important contributions of the global Indian community and highlighted our shared heritage and accomplishments. The atmosphere was electric—a lively blend of culture, friendship, and pride that went beyond borders. The evening hosted by the Indian
Council for Cultural Relations was a standout moment for me, as it truly embodied the spirit of unity and the crucial role the diaspora plays as a living bridge between India and the world.
A truly profound moment during my journey was my visit to the sacred Jagannath Temple. Being part of the ancient rituals and hearing the stories that capture Odisha’s spiritual essence was a deeply touching experience, allowing for a moment of tranquility and reflection amidst the vibrant celebrations.
The event also acknowledged the impressive contributions of
the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Awardees. Their successes have not only bolstered India’s image around the world but have also inspired many, including me. It was a true honour to see these outstanding individuals being celebrated.
One of the most memorable experiences I had was participating in a session named "Green Connections." This session emphasized the diaspora's vital role in sustainable development. The conversations were insightful and highlighted that we, as global Indians, possess the ability to greatly contribute to environmental preservation
and foster a better future for everyone.
The culinary experience at PBD2025 stood out as a remarkable highlight, celebrating the rich and diverse flavors of India. Each dish conveyed a narrative of tradition, innovation, and unity—mirroring the essence of the event itself.
The presence of distinguished leaders such as Hon'ble Indian President Smt. Draupadi Murmu, Indian Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, Chief Minister of Odisha Shri Mohan Charan Majhi, and External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar greatly
enhanced the significance of the celebration. Prime Minister Modi’s remote inauguration of the Pravasi Bharatiya Express was a meaningful gesture, further strengthening the bond between the diaspora and their homeland. Reflecting on my experience at PBD2025 fills me with immense pride and gratitude. It was a celebration of our collective culture, achievements, and aspirations—a reminder of how Bharat connects with the world, with the diaspora as its lasting link. $1.9 million conservation program to protect Platypus in Brisbane
Brisbane, January 13 (Australia India News Newsdesk)
The first stage of a significant conservation effort aimed at rehabilitating the habitat of one of Australia's most elusive animals, the platypus, is set to begin in Brisbane. The project, named ‘Repairing urban creek habitat for Platypus in Brisbane’s Bullockhead Creek’, has secured almost $1.9 million in funding from the Australian Government
to restore critical habitat for the platypus. This initiative, which will focus on a well-known platypus haven, will involve crucial steps such as habitat repair, weed removal, and the revegetation of the creek with native plant species. Work is expected to start in early 2025. The project is funded by the Australian Government’s Natural Heritage Trust under the Urban Rivers and Catchments Program. It forms part of the broader Boost Platypus by 2032 plan, a long-term strategy aimed at conserving platypus populations across Brisbane. Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner committed to this vision, which also includes the Platyplanting and Platypools initiatives, ahead of the March 2024 election. He emphasized, "Brisbane is Australia’s most biodiverse capital city, and our incredible plant and animal
populations are part of what makes our lifestyle so fantastic. By investing in these important programs, we can protect one of Australia’s most elusive creatures and grow their population in our waterways for years to come." Platypus populations are rapidly declining, and recent surveys have recorded just 35 confirmed sightings of platypus in Brisbane’s waterways this year. As part of the ongoing Platypartnerships research project, the University of New South Wales and the University of Queensland are collaborating with the Schrinner Council to track platypus movements and assess waterway health. Furthermore, 100 sites across Brisbane have been sampled for platypus DNA, which will aid future conservation efforts.
The Boost Platypus by 2032
plan also explores several other initiatives, including Platysigns (signage to raise awareness about platypus in creeks), Platyplatforms (platforms for observing platypus without disturbing their habitat), and the Platycam trial (a live feed of platypus hotspots). Specific areas targeted for conservation efforts include Bullockhead Creek, Albany Creek, Cabbage Tree Creek, and several others.
Tracy Davis, Chair for Environment, Parks and Sustainability, expressed the Council’s commitment, saying, “The Schrinner Council has a strong track record in protecting koalas by preserving bushland, building world-first Koala crossings, and undertaking important research, and we want to give our platypus population the same treatment. As we work with different levels of
government to deliver these important outcomes, we can continue this vital work to protect and preserve platypus populations now and into the future.”
Minister for the Environment and Water, Tanya Plibersek, also commented on the significance of the project, stating, “We want to leave nature better off for our kids and grandkids – and that’s why we’re restoring rivers and waterways in our suburbs with a $200 million investment. Nearly half of all nationally listed threatened animals and a quarter of our threatened plants are in urban areas, home to 96 per cent of Australia’s population. This critical funding is good news for native wildlife and the community – improving the quality of the urban spaces that we all share and love.”

Canada’s spiritual connection to Mahakumbh 2025 at Prayagraj: Bridging cultures and faith
From Indian Abroad Newsdesk
The Mahakumbh, one of the largest and most significant religious festivals in the world, has already begun in Prayagraj in 2025, drawing millions of devotees from across the globe.
For Canada’s growing Indian diaspora, this event offers a unique opportunity to reconnect with their cultural and spiritual heritage while celebrating a centuries-old tradition with deep significance.
Canada and its Indian community: A deepening relationship
Canada is home to one of the largest Indian communities outside of India, with over 1.6 million people of Indian descent. Many of these individuals have roots in Uttar Pradesh, the state where Prayagraj is located, making the Mahakumbh particularly
meaningful for them. For the Canadian-Indian community, the festival represents a powerful opportunity to honor their ancestral ties and reaffirm their cultural pride, especially as the event unfolds in their home region.
Over the years, the Indian community in Canada has built strong connections to their heritage, keeping traditions alive and passing them on to younger generations. The Mahakumbh serves as a central event in maintaining these cultural links. As the festival progresses, it is strengthening the bond between Canada and Prayagraj, with Canadian-Indians actively participating in the spiritual events or celebrating them within their own communities.
Cultural programs and spiritual engagement
In the lead-up to the Mahakumbh 2025, various Canadian
Hindu temples and cultural organizations have already started engaging the community through educational programs, spiritual retreats, and cultural workshops. These initiatives are helping Canadians of all ages understand the rich history, significance, and traditions of the Mahakumbh, offering them a deeper connection to the festival.
In addition, Canadian institutions have hosted exhibitions that showcase the grandeur and cultural relevance of the Mahakumbh. These events have allowed people from different backgrounds to learn more about the sacred gathering, fostering cultural exchange and understanding between India and Canada.
Pilgrimages and virtual participation
While many in the CanadianIndian community have already made the pilgrimage to Prayagraj
for the Mahakumbh, efforts to facilitate virtual participation continue to enable those who cannot attend in person to take part. Through live-streamed events, online spiritual talks, and virtual cultural performances, people across Canada can still experience the essence of the Mahakumbh from the comfort of their homes. This ensures that even those unable to travel to India can remain spiritually connected to the festival.
Support from governments and diplomacy
The Canadian government and provincial leaders have expressed support for the Mahakumbh 2025, recognizing the importance of cultural events in strengthening bilateral ties. Diplomatic relations between Canada and India continue to grow, and collaborative initiatives such as the Mahakumbh serve as vital avenues for deepening mutual
respect and understanding. Canadian officials are actively involved in celebrating the event, and their participation reflects the ongoing cultural diplomacy between the two nations.
A shared celebration of faith and unity
The Mahakumbh 2025 at Prayagraj is not just a religious gathering; it is a powerful expression of faith, cultural pride, and unity that resonates across the world. For Canada, the festival is a reminder of the shared values of spirituality, peace, and community that transcend borders. With increasing participation from Canada’s Indian diaspora, the Mahakumbh is proving to be a spiritually enriching experience that strengthens cultural ties between India and Canada, bringing people together to celebrate their shared heritage.
Open work permit rules for spouses of international students and foreign workers revised
New Delhi, January 12 (Indian Abroad Newsdesk)
In a significant policy change, the Canadian government has modified the rules for open work permits (OWPs) for spouses of international students and foreign workers, effective January 21, 2025. These changes, announced shortly after the resignation of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, aim to streamline immigration policies and support the country’s labour market needs.
Eligibility for OWPs is now restricted to spouses of
international students and foreign workers meeting specific criteria.
Spouses of international students can apply for OWPs only if the student is enrolled in master’s programmes (16 months or longer), doctoral programmes, or select professional programmes. For foreign workers, OWPs are limited to spouses employed in high-demand sectors. These include TEER 1 occupations or select TEER 2 and 3 occupations in fields such as natural and applied sciences, construction, healthcare, natural resources, education, sports, and the military. Additionally, foreign
workers must have at least 16 months remaining on their work permits at the time of their spouse’s application. Dependent children will no longer be eligible for family OWPs under the revised rules. However, family members who are no longer eligible for OWPs can explore other work permit options. A grandfathering clause allows family members already approved under previous rules to continue working, provided they renew their permits based on current criteria.
Indian students, who make up 37%
of Canada’s international student population as of 2023, stand to benefit significantly from the changes. The new rules facilitate better integration of Indian students' spouses and families into Canada’s workforce, further enhancing their experience in the country.
In a related move, Canada has announced a 10% reduction in international student study permits for 2025, cutting the target from 485,000 in 2024 to 437,000 in 2025. This target will remain unchanged in 2026.
The modifications are part of Canada’s broader efforts to
strengthen temporary resident programmes and address labour market demands. The Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) aims to reduce the percentage of temporary residents in the population from 6.5% in 2023 to 5% by 2026. The government also intends to hold employers accountable for any misuse of immigration systems. These changes reflect Canada’s ongoing commitment to refining its immigration policies to support its economy and labour market while maintaining a balanced and inclusive approach.
is not for sale. Not now, not ever.” Singh strongly criticized Trump’s remarks about turning Canada into the 51st US state in a 38-second video message shared on X (formerly Twitter). Singh highlighted the strong sense of pride Canadians have in their country, expressing their determination to defend it fiercely. He further warned Trump that any tariffs imposed on Canada would be met with retaliatory measures, urging future Canadian leaders to adopt a firm stance. Highlighting Canada’s values, Singh noted the country’s firefighters assisting
California during devastating wildfires, showcasing its commitment to supporting neighbors.
Trump had earlier claimed on his social media platform, Truth Social, that many Canadians supported annexation, touting supposed benefits like a 60% tax reduction, business growth, and enhanced military protection. The US President-elect also revived his controversial 2019 proposal to acquire Greenland, suggesting economic or military force could be used, which drew strong condemnation from European leaders defending Greenland’s
territorial integrity.
Former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who recently resigned as leader of the Liberal Party but remains in office until a successor is chosen, dismissed Trump’s remarks as “absurd.” Trudeau insisted there was “not a snowball’s chance in hell” that Canada would become part of the United States, calling for mutual respect in cross-border relations.
As tensions rise over Trump’s bold claims, Canadian and European leaders continue to push back, reaffirming their commitment to their nations’ sovereignty.

Australians find a spiritual bonding at Maha Kumbh Mela
Delhi, January 14
The Maha Kumbh Mela is more than a festival. It’s a spiritual journey that draws millions from around the world to experience its magic. For Australians, this extraordinary event has become a bridge to India’s ancient traditions, offering a unique opportunity to connect with a deeper sense of faith and belonging.
Australians have been part of the Kumbh Mela’s growing global community for years.
One such story is that of Simon Leis, who attended the 2019 Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj. Simon returned to Australia with more than memories—he carried with him a profound sense of transformation. When he shared his experiences with the Indian High Commissioner in Canberra, he spoke about the festival’s lasting impact on his soul.
Another example is that of Andrew Turner, a farm owner from Australia, who exemplified the spirit of the Kumbh by offering free boat rides to pilgrims. His gesture of kindness was a simple yet powerful reflection of the festival’s essence: service, unity, and compassion.
As the Maha Kumbh Mela 2025 approaches, Australia is set to be one of 183 nations represented at this spiritual gathering in Prayagraj. The Indian High
Commission in Canberra has been actively encouraging Australians to participate, spreading the word about this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
The festival’s influence isn’t limited to India. Efforts to bring the Kumbh experience to Australia have included events that unite diverse communities, from indigenous groups to yoga enthusiasts and Hindu and Buddhist organizations. These initiatives highlight the universal themes of harmony and spirituality that the Kumbh represents.
For those who have attended, the Kumbh Mela is unforgettable. A video titled “Devotee from Australia Praises UP CM Yogi Adityanath” captures the heartfelt account of an Australian visitor. They describe their awe at the festival’s organization, cleanliness, and safety, praising the efforts of the Uttar Pradesh government and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. From clean drinking water to medical aid,
every detail was thoughtfully arranged, making the experience both inspiring and comforting. Beyond logistics, the Kumbh Mela is a transformative experience. The Australian devotee in the video describes the atmosphere as serene and uplifting, a place where the energy of devotion can be felt everywhere. They urge people from all over the world to attend, calling it a spiritual celebration that everyone should witness at least once in their lifetime.
For Australians, the Kumbh Mela is more than an event—it’s a chance to connect with a shared humanity. Whether through personal pilgrimages, acts of kindness, or simply being part of the crowd, Australians are finding their place in this incredible gathering.
The Maha Kumbh Mela promises to offer yet another opportunity to celebrate faith, culture, and unity—a celebration that brings people together, no matter where they’re from.

Dubai, Jan 8 (IANS) The International Cricket Council (ICC) revealed pitch ratings for the recently concluded BorderGavaskar Trophy, with four of the five Test venues receiving the highest possible rating of "very good".
Perth Stadium, Adelaide Oval, Gabba and Melbourne Cricket Ground received "very good" ratings, whereas the venue of the final Test of th series Sydney Cricket Ground was given "satisfactory" ratings.
The ICC revamped its pitch rating system in 2023, simplifying the previous six-tier structure to four categories: Very Good, Satisfactory, Unsatisfactory, Unfit. Under this system, venues that
BCCI
receive unsatisfactory or unfit ratings are penalised with demerit points. Accumulating five demerit points within a fiveyear period could result in the venue being banned from hosting international matches.
Peter Roach, Head of Cricket Operations and Scheduling at Cricket Australia (CA), expressed his satisfaction with the ICC’s ratings and highlighted the importance of pitch diversity in preserving the essence of Test cricket.
“We are delighted by the quality of pitches produced for the NRMA Insurance Border-Gavaskar Trophy series and grateful for all the hard work of the curators and venues across the country.
“We encourage pitches that bring out the unique characteristics of that venue and this has long been a feature of Australian cricket. We strongly believe that this is one of the reasons that Test cricket is so popular in Australia.
“We don't look to prepare wickets that favour the home side or suit
our situation in a series. What we seek is a good contest between bat and ball and pitches that are likely to produce a result.
“Weather obviously plays a significant part in preparation and we know that even our most skilled curators are challenged at times by adverse weather.
“The SCG has been striving to bring out their unique characteristics of early pace and bounce before the pitch wears and spins. This year was a step in the right direction to achieving this which provided an exciting finish to the Border Gavaskar Trophy series and bodes well for the Ashes summer in 2025-26.
“The series also emphasised the benefits of playing firstclass cricket at major venues. It allows our curators to become more familiar with the different challenges that go into preparing wickets in different weather conditions, and also allows players to enter the Test team familiar with the conditions they will confront.”

Following India’s disappointing performance in Test cricket,

including a 0-3 loss at home to New Zealand and a 1-3 defeat in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series in Australia, the BCCI has implemented strict measures to address the situation. Among these is a decision to restrict players’ wives and families from accompanying them on tours to improve focus and performance.
The decision was made during a review meeting held on Saturday in Mumbai, attended
by BCCI officials, head coach Gautam Gambhir, chief selector Ajit Agarkar, and captain Rohit Sharma.
The board has reinstated an earlier rule, scrapped during the Covid-19 pandemic, limiting the presence of family members during tours. As per new restrictions, wives and families will not be allowed to travel with the players for the entirety of a tour, sources told IANS.
Ranatunga warns against Two-Tier Test cricket, calls out big three for exclusionary plans
New Delhi, Jan 7 (IANS) Sri Lanka's 1996 World Cupwinning captain and cricket icon Arjuna Ranatunga has expressed deep concerns about a proposal from cricket’s "Big Three" – India, England, and Australia – to restructure the Test cricket landscape. The three powerhouses are planning to create a two-tier system that prioritises matches among themselves, relegating other cricket-playing nations to a secondary status. Ranatunga fears that this move could severely harm the development of the sport, especially in smaller cricketing nations.
A report in the Sydney Morning Herald revealed that the heads of the Indian, English, and
Australian cricket boards are set to meet with ICC officials later this month to discuss the controversial proposal.
The agenda includes a plan to increase the frequency of Test matches among the Big Three, ensuring that these teams play each other twice every three years instead of the current schedule of once every four years.
This arrangement would leave less room for matches against other nations like Sri Lanka, Pakistan, South Africa, and West Indies among them, effectively marginalizing teams outside the Big Three.
Ranatunga was unequivocal in his criticism of the plan, calling it a blatant move to prioritize profits over the integrity of the sport.
"I understand the economics. Such a move will certainly line the pockets of the three boards, but sport isn’t just about Pounds, Dollars, and Rupees. Administrators must nurture and
Barcelona crushes Real Madrid to win Spanish Supercup
Jeddah, Jan 13 (IANS) FC Barcelona produced a stunning first-half display to beat Real Madrid 5-2 in the final of the Spanish Supercup on Sunday. Hansi Flick's side led 4-1 at the break and despite seeing goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny sent off for bringing down Kylian Mbappe early in the second half, they were able to hold on with relative ease against the Madrid attack, reported Xinhua. Things looked to be going Madrid's way when goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois pulled off two stunning saves in the opening minutes from Lamine Yamal and Raphinha before Mbappe put Madrid ahead in the fifth minute.
A Barca attack broke down with Vinicius feeding the ball to the
Frenchman, who produced a powerful run from deep, held off the defender and scored with his right foot.
Barca continued to create chances, with Raphinha shooting across the face of the goal before Yamal equalized in the 22nd minute.
Robert Lewandowski dropped deep and pulled Antonio Rudiger out of position to create space for the young winger to run onto his pass. Yamal then turned inside and wrong-footed Courtois with an angled shot.
Barca suffered an injury setback when Inigo Martinez had to be replaced by Ronald Araujo, but they took the lead after 36 minutes when Eduardo Camavinga's rash challenge on Gavi gifted Barca a penalty, which Lewandowski dispatched into the corner.
Three minutes later, it was 3-1 as Real Madrid's defense gave Jules Kounde space to angle a cross for Raphinha to head home after the Brazilian stole in completely unmarked past Lucas Vazquez.
‘Karma hit me’: Tsitsipas after Australian Open shock exit
protect the game, not just fatten their coffers,” Ranatunga told Telecom Asia Sport.
Ranatunga highlighted the far-reaching implications of the proposal, particularly for emerging cricketing nations. He referenced the performance of West Indies pacer Shamar Joseph, who played a pivotal role in his team’s remarkable victory against Australia at the Gabba last year. "It’s tough as nails to beat the Aussies at the Gabba, but this bloke was sensational. I’m sure even Australian fans appreciated that display of raw talent. Why would you want to deny players like him a chance by excluding other nations?"
He argued that the two-tier system would rob players from smaller nations of the opportunity to compete against the world’s best, stunting their growth and denying fans the chance to witness the kind of upsets that make cricket special.
Melbourne, Jan 13 (IANS) Stefanos Tsitsipas, reflecting on his surprise first-round exit from the Australian Open, admitted that his decision to withdraw from doubles to preserve energy backfired spectacularly.
"It’s quite ironic. My whole [idea] was to try to go deep into the Australian Open... I guess karma hit me," Tsitsipas said after his four-set loss to American Alex Michelsen. The Greek star’s early departure marked a stark departure from his usual success at Melbourne Park, where he has often shone as one of the tournament’s standout performers.
Tsitsipas, a three-time semifinalist and 2023 runner-up in Melbourne, made a calculated choice to prioritize singles by pulling out of doubles with his brother, Petros. His goal was clear: save energy for a deep run in the draw. Yet, the strategy unraveled when the 26-year-old fell to the 20-year-old Michelsen, who outclassed him with bold shot-making and composure in key moments.
"I was not able to deliver or play the way I was hoping to at this year's event," Tsitsipas admitted. “The whole purpose was just to save up on some energy and be fresher... but that didn’t work out.”
The loss also prompted Tsitsipas to reflect on how his hunger and mindset have evolved over the years. “For sure I had a fresher mind back then. It seemed like I was hungrier in a completely different way than I am now,” he said, harking back to his 2019 Australian Open breakthrough, where he stunned Roger Federer en route to the semi-finals.
While Tsitsipas acknowledges that his passion for tennis remains, he believes his career stability has shifted his approach. “I’ve been quite well-established in the last couple of years... I feel like there was a different energy, a different dynamic back then. I would say I’m a better player now, even though I’m losing.”
The defeat to Michelsen also highlighted a slow start to Tsitsipas’ 2025 season. With two losses in his first three matches, the former World No. 3 finds himself struggling for form. “The most frustrating part about losing in the first round of a Grand Slam is that you have way too much time to recover,” he said. “Honestly, that’s much better in terms of problem-solving. It just sucks in a way that I’ll be hanging around for quite a while now before my next tournament.”
Despite the setback, Tsitsipas remains optimistic about his game, believing that he has evolved technically and tactically.

Surge in arrival of migratory birds in TN’s Pallikaranai after removal of encroachments
Following the removal of encroachments, the Pallikaranai marshland in Tamil Nadu's Mettukuppam has witnessed the arrival of more than 10,000 birds from 100 different species, including 70 migratory species.
According to Gopikannan, an avid bird watcher, several rare migratory birds have been spotted in the marshland this season. These include the Garganey, Northern Shoveler, Eurasian Teal, Eurasian Wigeon, Ruff, and Western Marsh Harrier. He attributed their presence to the marshland’s abundant food supply and favourable conditions.
“The availability of food and a rich habitat makes Pallikaranai the
preferred site for migratory birds during the season,” he said. Tamil Nadu forest department officials confirmed that 52 encroachments were removed under the supervision of the National Green Tribunal (NGT), and the squatters were relocated. This intervention allowed the marshland to reclaim its natural state, creating a haven for both migratory and local bird species.
Officials reported that over 10,000 birds, representing 100 different species, were observed in the Pallikaranai wetland. They highlighted that continuous monitoring efforts by bird watchers and the forest department over the years have significantly enriched their
understanding of the ecosystem. Heavy rainfall during the monsoon season contributed to robust water flow into the marshland, fostering a thriving habitat. As water levels gradually receded, a variety of waders joined the migratory species, further enhancing the marshland’s biodiversity.
The Vettangudi Bird Sanctuary in Tamil Nadu has also reported a notable increase in migratory bird arrivals this season compared to previous years.
Located in the Kollukudipatti and Vettangudipatti villages along the Madurai-Karaikudi Highway, the sanctuary spans 36 hectares.
Officials revealed that approximately 3,500 to 4,000

India Project’ a key biotechnology revolution towards Viksit Bharat: PM Modi
New Delhi, Jan 9 (IANS) The ‘Genome India Project’ marks a defining moment in the country's biotechnology landscape and the combination of biotechnology and biomass is an important part of the foundation for 'Viksit Bharat', Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Thursday.
Addressing experts and scientists via video message, PM Modi said the project was approved 5 years ago and our scientists have diligently worked and completed the project, despite the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic.
More than 20 research institutions such as IISc, IITs, CSIR and DBT-BRIC have played a major role in this research. The data consisting of the genome sequences of 10,000 Indians is now available at the Indian Biological Data Centre.
PM Modi expressed confidence
that this project would prove to be a milestone in the field of biotechnology research and congratulated all the stakeholders involved in the project.
“Genome India Project is an important milestone in the biotechnology revolution. This data will now be available to scientists and researchers, aiding scholars in understanding India's genetic landscape,” the Prime Minister emphasised.
The nature of diseases varies greatly, making it essential to understand the genetic identity of the population to determine effective treatments. PM Modi highlighted the significant challenge of sickle cell anemia in the tribal communities and the national mission to combat it. He noted that the problem might differ across regions, and a complete genetic study is necessary to understand the unique genomic patterns of the Indian population.
“This understanding will help develop specific solutions and effective medicines for particular groups. The scope is much broader and sickle cell anaemia was just an example,” added the Prime Minister.
South Australia bans junk food ads on public transport
Canberra, Jan 12 (IANS) South Australia (SA) has become the first Australian state to ban junk food advertisements on public transport to tackle obesity and
promote healthy diets.
The ban, which will be effective on July 1, 2025, prohibits images of unhealthy products such as chocolate, lollies, confectionery, desserts, ice creams, soft drinks, and chips from appearing on public buses, trains, and trams, reports Xinhua news agency.
Strong evidence has demonstrated that food and drink marketing can affect a child's nutrition knowledge, food
preferences and consumption patterns; obesity and type 2 diabetes have also been linked to the advertisement of unhealthy food and drinks, experts said on Saturday.
"Junk food marketing has a really powerful, persuasive influence on what our children eat," the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) quoted Jane Martin from the Food for Health Alliance as saying.
Drink coffee during morning hours to get good heart health
Delhi, Jan 8
While coffee offers several health benefits, the best time to drink the hot beverage is morning hours, claims a study on Wednesday.
The research, published in the European Heart Journal, showed that people who drink coffee in the morning have a lower risk of dying from heart disease. They also have a lower overall mortality risk compared to people who drink coffee all day long.
Researchers from Tulane University in the US showed morning coffee drinkers were 16 per cent less likely to die of any cause and 31 per cent less likely to die of cardiovascular disease.
However, no reduction in risk was found for people who drink coffee all day, compared to non-coffee drinkers.
“This is the first study testing coffee drinking timing patterns and health outcomes. Our findings indicate that it’s not just whether you drink coffee or how much you drink, but the time of day when you drink coffee, that’s important,” said Dr Lu Qi, Professor at Tulane.
In the study, researchers analysed data on 40,725 adults between 1999 and 2018.
As part of the study, participants were asked about all the food and drink they consumed on at least one day, including whether they drank coffee, how much, and when. It also included a subgroup of 1,463 people who were asked to complete a detailed food and drink diary for a full week.
The team linked the information with records of deaths and causes of death for nine to 10 years.
More than one in three people in the study were morning coffee drinkers (they primarily drank coffee before midday), and less
than one in four drank coffee throughout the day (morning, afternoon, and evening). These were compared with 48 per cent non coffee drinkers.
Morning coffee drinkers benefitted from the lower risks whether they were moderate drinkers (two to three cups) or heavy drinkers (more than three cups). Light morning drinkers (one cup or less) benefitted from a smaller decrease in risk, the researchers said.
However, the study doesn’t give the mechanism behind how drinking coffee in the morning reduces the risk of death from cardiovascular disease.
“A possible explanation is that consuming coffee in the afternoon or evening may disrupt circadian rhythms and levels of hormones such as melatonin. This, in turn, leads to changes in cardiovascular risk factors such as inflammation and blood pressure,” Qi said, calling for further studies to validate the findings.
Indian-origin researcher finds gene behind autism and seizures
New York, Jan 9 (IANS) A team of researchers, led by Indian-origin neuroscientist Viji Santhakumar, has found a gene that contributes to the development of behavioural changes associated with autism spectrum disorder and epilepsy.
The gene, called neuropilin2, encodes a receptor involved in cell-cell interactions in the brain and plays a key role in regulating the development of neural circuits.
The study, published in Nature Molecular Psychiatry, offers a pathway for future treatments aimed at alleviating some
challenging symptoms of these frequently co-occurring conditions.
Earlier research has linked mutations in neuropilin2 to neurological disorders like autism and epilepsy, but the mechanisms involved have remained largely unclear.
Santhakumar and her collaborators from University of California–Riverside created a mouse model to examine the consequences of deleting the neuropilin2 gene.
They found the absence of neuropilin2 impairs the migration of inhibitory neurons, disrupting the delicate balance between excitatory and inhibitory signals in the brain.
“This imbalance leads to autism-like behaviours and an increased risk of seizures,” said Santhakumar, professor
Why patients worry more after seeing incomprehensible medical test results
New York, Jan 5 (IANS) Medical reports worldwide are not written with patients in mind, which increases their overall level of worry as they find test results hard to understand, according to researchers.
For example, a standard pathology report is written by a pathologist for a clinical specialist like a surgeon or a cancer doctor or for other pathologists to read, said Cathryn Lapedis, of the Department of Pathology at University of Michigan Health in the US.
In a study published in the journal JAMA, Lapedis and her colleagues tested whether people could understand standard pathology reports and whether a patientcentred report might improve patient understanding.
A patient-centred pathology report gives important information on the patient’s diagnosis in a clear format that minimises medical terminology, she said.
For example, a standard pathology report will include a term like prostatic adenocarcinoma, but
the patient-centred report will simply call it prostate cancer.
The team recruited 2,238 adults, aged 55 to 84, who had a prostate but no history of prostate cancer. Participants were provided with a hypothetical scenario in which they were seeking care due to troubling urinary symptoms, received a biopsy and then would receive results from that test through their patient portal. They were also asked to report their level of worry based on the results.
“We found that most people cannot get basic information — like whether or not they have prostate cancer from standard pathology reports. For example, in our participants reviewing the standard University report, only 39 per cent could accurately identify that the report showed cancer,” said Lapedis.
However, 93 per cent of those who received the patient-centred pathology report accurately identified that the report showed prostate cancer. Participants’ level of worry was more closely associated with their risk level.
The study authors recommend that hospital systems consider including patient-centred pathology reports with standard reports to improve patient understanding.
AI can spot patients at risk for suicide, finds study
of molecular, cell and systems biology.
“The study results highlight how a single gene can influence both the excitatory and inhibitory systems in the brain. We show that disrupting inhibitory circuit development is sufficient to cause autism-related behaviours and epilepsy to co-occur,” Santhakumar added.
By selectively deleting neuropilin2 during a key developmental window, the researchers found impairments in inhibitory regulation of the circuit, which led to deficits in behavioural flexibility, social interactions, and an increased risk for seizures. The study findings suggest that targeting specific phases of neuronal development could open new doors for therapeutic interventions, potentially preventing the onset of these disorders if detected early.
New Delhi, Jan 5 (IANS) Artificial intelligence (AI) can can help doctors identify patients at risk for suicide, potentially improving prevention efforts in routine medical settings, according to new research.
The research, reported in journal JAMA Network Open, compared two approaches — automatic pop-up alerts that interrupted the doctor's workflow versus a more passive system that simply displayed risk information in the patient's electronic chart.
The team found that the interruptive alerts were far more effective, leading doctors to conduct suicide risk assessments in connection with 42 per cent of screening alerts, compared to just 4 per cent with the passive system.
Colin Walsh, associate professor of biomedical informatics, medicine and psychiatry at Vanderbilt University Medical Center said that most people who die by suicide have seen a health
care provider in the year before their death, often for reasons unrelated to mental health.
The team tested whether their AI system, called the Vanderbilt Suicide Attempt and Ideation Likelihood model (VSAIL), could effectively prompt doctors in three neurology clinics to screen patients for suicide risk during regular clinic visits.
“Universal screening isn't practical in every setting. We developed VSAIL to help identify high-risk patients and prompt focused screening conversations,” said Walsh.
The VSAIL model analyses routine information from electronic health records to calculate a patient's 30-day risk of suicide attempt. The researchers suggested that similar systems could be tested in other medical settings. Health care systems need to balance the effectiveness of interruptive alerts against their potential downsides, Walsh said.
These results suggest that automated risk detection combined with well-designed alerts could help us identify more patients who need suicide prevention services, said authors.

the importance of maintaining healthy and beautiful nails, especially during the summer months. Don't let the sun and heat take a toll on your nail health; follow these expertrecommended tips to keep your nails looking fabulous.
Use the Right Tools
Using the right tools is crucial for maintaining nail health. Avoid metal cuticle pushers, as they can cause damage and increase infection risks. Instead, opt for wooden or rubber cuticle pushers. Additionally, always use sharp, clean nail clippers and files to prevent nail splitting and peeling.
Chase the sun, not the damage: Smart skin care choices for summer
As the days grow longer and the sun shines brighter, many of us eagerly embrace the warmth of summer. However, the need for diligent skin care comes with the joys of outdoor activities and beach vacations.
Before diving into skin care tips, it's essential to understand the damaging effects of the sun's ultraviolet (UV) rays. Prolonged exposure to UV radiation can lead to many skin concerns, including sunburn and premature ageing.
"One of the most effective ways to shield your skin from sun damage is sunscreen. Look for a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a high SPF (Sun Protection Factor) rating to ensure comprehensive protection against both UVA and UVB rays. Apply sunscreen generously to all exposed areas of skin, including your face, neck, and ears, and remember to reapply every two hours, especially if you're swimming or sweating," says Mansi Sharma, founder of The Honest Tree by Boddess.
Hydration is key. Summer heat can take a toll on your skin, leading to dehydration and a loss of moisture. Mansi recommends
to combat the heat by staying hydrated from the inside out. She says, "Drink plenty of water throughout the day to keep your skin hydrated and plump. Additionally, incorporate hydrating skincare products into your routine, such as lightweight moisturizers and serums formulated with hyaluronic acid or glycerin."
While sunscreen provides crucial protection, it's not the only line of defence against the sun's rays. "Consider covering up with lightweight, breathable clothing, hats, and sunglasses to provide additional protection for your skin and eyes. Opt for tightly woven fabrics and dark colours for optimal sun protection," adds Mansi. "When possible, seek shade during the sun's peak hours, typically between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. This is when UV radiation is at its strongest, increasing the risk of sunburn and skin damage. Take breaks from direct sunlight by relaxing under a beach umbrella or finding shelter in a shaded area."
The founder of The Honest Tree by Boddess also suggests that while selecting skincare products for summer, opt for formulations that cater to the specific needs of sun-exposed skin. Mansi says, "Look for products enriched with antioxidants like vitamins C and E, which help neutralize free radicals generated by UV exposure. Incorporating a gentle exfoliant into your routine can also help slough off dead skin cells, revealing a fresh, radiant complexion."

In addition, CCTV cameras and a modern security system were also installed to keep a check on the surroundings on the light of heightened security.
As per media reports, the actor resides in a 1 BHK flat on the ground floor of Galaxy Apartments, while his parents live on the first floor
Last year, in April, two men on a bike fired four shots at Salman Khan's residence and fled. The actor believes gangster Lawrence Bishnoi was responsible, with the aim of killing him and his family. Even his father, veteran screenwriter, Salim Khan, of Salim-Javed, was threatened by alleged members of Bishnoi's gang as the latter continues to serve his time in jail.

She posted a string of pictures of herself. In the first image, the actress is seen wearing traditional Indian wear. She is standing with her back to the camera, her face gracefully tilted toward the lens. The backdrop has a picturesque view of the mountains.
She then shared two selfies of herself in a hotel room. The actress could be seen smiling at the lens as she clicked the picture. The last photograph had the actress sitting and gorging on a big ladoo.
Janhvi, who is the daughter of late Bollywood star Sridevi and producer Boney Kapoor, captioned the image: “Happy new year!”
On the work front, Janhvi will next be seen in “Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari” with actor Varun Dhawan, Sanya Malhotra, Rohit Saraf and Maniesh Paul. The film is directed by Shashank Khaitan. She will also be seen in ‘Param Sundari’, which is set to release on July 25, 2025.

The film “promises a heartfelt tale of love, where two worlds collide, and sparks are bound to fly. Set against the breathtaking backwaters of Kerala, this love story is a rollercoaster of laughter, chaos, and unexpected twists you won’t see coming,” per a description provided by Maddock, reports variety.com.

When SRK spoke about the influence of Mafia on Bollywood
The Hindi film industry is the most prolific film industry in the world, and has helped India accumulate a lot of soft power, and also helped in the economic growth of the country. However, not everything was hunky dory back in the day. Mafia and the underworld once cast a dark shadow on Bollywood.
An old video of Bollywood megastar Shah Rukh Khan has surfaced on social media where he can be seen speaking about his brush with the dark side. He said in the video, “Hindi film industry is the easiest industry to take on right now. We are the largest producers of films in the world. So they (the mafia) would back a film, and say ‘I want you in my film’. They do try to back a film, and try to create a product. They'll have four or five of their
guys here and they'll say, ‘Okay Shah Rukh, you have to do this film or X hero you have to do this film or X actress has to do this film’. And, I would ask, ‘Who's the producer?’ they would then say, ‘It's okay, this is the guy we're sending, you talk to him and sign the film’”.
He further mentioned, “So if you are scared for life, then you sign it or if you're ready to take your chances, you say no to it”.
When asked if he was ever threatened, he said, “Oh, yes, I've had it on many occasions. But then either you decide like I had a lot of security for three years with cops”.
Bollywood or the Hindi film industry was officially granted the industry status in 1998. Sushma Swaraj, who served as the Union Minister of Information and Broadcasting under the Atal Bihari Vajpayee-led government, and in 1998, gave "industry status" to film production thereby legitimising the film industry making it eligible for loans from financial institutions.
