CLUB NEWS A MESSAGE FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER Summer is off to a great start with the Ladies Member-Guest, Senior Member-Guest, swim team season kickoff, pool opening, and the Member-Member tournament. It has been a busy and exciting six-week stretch for the club. Below are a few photos from our 80s Neon-Themed Member-Member Golf Tournament. It was fantastic to see our members fully embracing the theme. I must admit, for once, it was fun to see everyone not paying attention to the club’s dress code! LOL! As previously announced, Joey Latino has stepped into the role of Director of Golf. We are excited to welcome Joey to the Wakefield family. If you have not yet had the opportunity to meet him, please stop by the golf shop and introduce yourself.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Rocky Brooks for his three years of service at Wakefield. Rocky is truly a pro’s pro, and we are grateful for the time, energy, expertise, and dedication he brought to our club. We wish him all the best in his new role at Raleigh Country Club. The good news is that he’s only twenty minutes away! Thank you, Rocky, for your passion and commitment to Wakefield Plantation. We look forward to a wonderful remainder of the summer season. As always, thank you for your continued support of the club and our staff. Michael Thomas, General Manager

MEMBERSHIP As America prepares to celebrate our 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, Sedgefield Country Club celebrates a milestone as well, turning 100 years old! Established in 1926, Sedgefield Country Club has experienced parallel moments alongside our great nation. From the roaring 20s, to the Great Depression, World War II to social change, the club has grown with America itself over the years. Let me highlight a few exciting moments from McConnell Golf’s most historic property Sedgefield Country Club: In 1936, Tony Manero, the Head Pro at Sedgefield, won the U.S. Open. His victory is still regarded as one of the greatest upsets in U.S. Open History. On May 8, 1953, representatives from seven schools gathered at the Sedgefield Inn to declare independence from the Southern Conference and build the Atlantic Coast Conference. On March 17, 1955, Ronald Reagan visited Sedgefield for a GE meeting during his time as the company’s national spokesperson. Between 1954 to 1962, this role with GE transformed Ronald Reagan’s career, allowing him to travel to 135 GE plants, meet over 250,000 employees where he would evolve from an actor into a polished conservative political speaker.

1936 - Tony Manero, Head Pro at Sedgefield, wins the U.S. Open

In 1961, Charlie Sifford became the first black golfer to play in a PGA TOUR event in the South, finishing tied for fourth place in the Greater Greensboro Open at Sedgefield Country Club. Today, Charlie is honored with a plaque on The Wall of Champions behind the 9th green at Sedgefield. In 2022, Sir Nick Faldo was added to the Wall of Champions as his first PGA TOUR start was at Sedgefield in 1979. In 2022, he retired from broadcasting as the CBS Sports lead golf analyst with the Wyndham Championship being his last event. Pretty amazing how his professional career began and ended at Sedgefield. I could go on forever about the tournament history alone at Sedgefield but highly encourage you to attend the 2026 Wyndham Championship August 5-9. Member tickets are available for purchase that will grant you access to the clubhouse and McConnell Golf platforms on 15, 17 and 18. Considering it is the 100th anniversary of Sedgefield, I imagine it will be a special week to witness! Feel free to reach out if you are interested in tickets. Wishing you an amazing 4th of July celebrating the 250th anniversary of the great nation we are fortunate to live in!

1961 - Charlie Sifford becomes the first black golfer to play in a PGA TOUR event in the South at the Greater Greensboro Open at Sedgefield. Sifford would go on to finish fourth in the tournament.

DINING EVENTS & INFORMATION As we move into the heart of summer, July and August are shaping up to be exciting months here at Wakefield Plantation. Before looking ahead, I want to take a moment to thank everyone who participated in our Member-Member Tournament in June. It was a tremendous success, started off by our "Neon Nights" 80s-themed party. Our food and beverage team had a great time creating themed menu offerings and specialty cocktails that complemented the event and helped make the evening a memorable kickoff to a fantastic tournament weekend. Pool season is now in full swing, and our food and beverage team down at the pool has been hard at work making the Breaker Bar & Grille the perfect summer destination. Whether you're taking a break from the pool, enjoying lunch with family, or meeting friends for a refreshing cocktail, we have a fantastic seasonal food and beverage menu ready for you. We look forward to serving you throughout the summer months. On a personal note, the summer has started off strong for my family here at WP. My son, Connor, who has been working here at WP since high school, is currently interning with our General Manager, Michael Thomas, earning school credit while enrolled at NC State University and is gaining valuable experience and insight into his future career path. My daughter, Taylor, has started her first job as an Activities Leader down at the Sports Club and is thoroughly enjoying working with the kids. As a proud dad, it's rewarding to see both of them developing professionally while being part of the Wakefield family. As always, thank you for your continued support. I look forward to seeing everyone around the club this summer and helping create more great memories together. Todd Jackson, Executive Chef/Food & Beverage Director

FITNESS A MESSAGE FROM HEATHER Hello everyone, I hope you are enjoying your summer. If you have been thinking of starting an exercise regimen or thought of working with a trainer I would like to add some food for thought. Many people begin their fitness journey with enthusiasm, only to find themselves struggling with motivation, consistency, or uncertainty about what exercises to perform. While there is no shortage of workout information available online, having a personal trainer can make a significant difference in achieving fitness goals safely and effectively. Whether you're looking to lose weight, build muscle, improve athletic performance, or simply lead a healthier lifestyle, a personal trainer provides the expertise, accountability, and support needed to maximize results. One of the greatest advantages of working with a personal trainer is receiving a customized workout program tailored to your specific goals, fitness level, and lifestyle. Unlike generic workout routines, personalized plans take into account factors such as age, experience, medical history, and physical limitations. A trainer can adjust exercises, intensity levels, and training schedules to ensure that every workout moves you closer to your objectives. Many fitness enthusiasts unknowingly perform exercises with improper form, which can reduce effectiveness and

increase the risk of injury. Personal trainers are trained to teach correct movement patterns and exercise techniques. By ensuring proper form, trainers help clients target the intended muscles while minimizing strain on joints and connective tissues. This guidance can be especially valuable for beginners and individuals returning to exercise after an injury. Staying committed to a fitness routine can be challenging, especially when life becomes busy. A personal trainer serves as both a coach and accountability partner, helping clients remain focused and consistent. Knowing that someone is tracking your progress and expecting you to show up can provide powerful motivation. Trainers also offer encouragement during difficult workouts and celebrate milestones along the way, making the fitness journey more enjoyable and rewarding. Without a clear plan, many people spend months—or even years—working out without seeing the results they desire. Personal trainers help eliminate guesswork by creating structured programs based on proven training principles. By selecting the right exercises, setting realistic goals, and monitoring progress, trainers help clients achieve results more efficiently than they might on their own. A personal trainer does more than lead workouts—they teach valuable fitness knowledge. Clients learn about exercise selection, training principles, recovery, nutrition, and healthy lifestyle habits. This education empowers individuals to make informed decisions about their health and fitness, increasing the likelihood of maintaining long-term success even outside of personal training sessions. As fitness levels improve, workout programs must evolve to continue producing results. Personal trainers continually assess performance and make necessary adjustments to keep workouts challenging and effective. Whether increasing resistance, introducing new exercises, or modifying routines to overcome plateaus, trainers ensure continued progress while reducing the risk of boredom. Personal trainers can also provide specialized guidance for individuals with unique fitness needs, including older adults, athletes, people recovering from injuries, and those managing chronic health conditions. With appropriate certifications and experience, trainers can create safe and effective programs that accommodate specific requirements while helping clients improve strength, mobility, endurance, and overall health. Achieving fitness goals often leads to increased self-confidence, but the support of a personal trainer can accelerate this process. As clients gain strength, improve performance, and develop healthier habits, they often feel more confident both inside and outside the gym. The reassurance of having an experienced professional by your side can make challenging goals feel more attainable and help build a positive relationship with exercise. Investing in a personal trainer is an investment in your health, fitness, and overall well-being. From personalized programming and expert instruction to accountability and motivation, personal trainers provide the tools and guidance necessary to achieve lasting results. Whether you're just starting your fitness journey or looking to break through a plateau, working with a qualified personal trainer can help you train smarter, stay consistent, and reach your goals with greater confidence and success. If there is anything at all I can help with please don't hesitate to call me at 919-649-3007 or email at Baileyfunfitness@aol.com Heather Bailey Overington, Personal Trainer Phone: 919-649-3007 | Email: baileyfunfitness@aol.com

You might find yourself chuckling during a wobbly balance pose or hearing a lighthearted joke about tight hamstrings—because, let’s be honest, we all have them. Safety and alignment are consistently cued to help prevent injuries, ensuring that even those new to yoga feel confident and supported in each posture. Whether you're here to stretch, breathe, or just enjoy an hour of self-care, this class creates a space where everyone can move at their own pace. Whether you’re deepening your yoga journey or simply looking for a friendly place to meet others, the relaxed and welcoming atmosphere makes it easy to strike up a conversation before or after class. Sharing a laugh during a pose or a knowing smile when the instructor cracks a joke fosters a sense of community that extends beyond the mat. It’s not just about stretching—it’s about finding a moment of joy, easing tension (both physical and mental), and leaving with a lighter heart.

💦 Why Water Fitness Is So Good for You Water fitness is one of the best ways to improve your overall health while being gentle on your body. The buoyancy of the water reduces stress on joints, making it an excellent option for those with arthritis, injuries, or anyone looking for a low-impact workout. At the same time, water provides natural resistance in every movement, helping build strength, improve balance, increase flexibility, and boost cardiovascular fitness. Whether you’re new to exercise or looking to stay active as you age, water fitness offers a safe, effective, and enjoyable way to improve your health. Come make a splash, stay strong, and have fun while moving your body! Water Aerobics with Tracy is every Tuesday at 9am

Tuesdays at 8:00am YOGALATIES (with Heather): Yogalaties is a type of exercise inspired by yoga and Pilates, as its name suggests. It is said to harness the physical and mental benefits of both practices. It will incorporate yoga postures, gentle movement sequences, breath work, core work, and supportive guided relaxation for increased awareness. All levels welcomed. Wednesdays at 9:00am Go with the Flow Yoga (with Heather): A faster paced yoga practice that moves with a bit more rhythm and the asanas paired with the breath. Modifications are taught and encouraged. *Please bring a mat and preferably a block and strap Thursdays at 8:45am Fitter Faster (with Heather): This class is held outdoors using equipment and body weight to challenge your entire body. This total body workout is a great way to condition for other sports, increase stamina and endurance, stop cellular aging, build muscle strength, and promote weight loss. We will incorporate intervals and Tabata training. Fast paced and fun but you can work at your own pace. Fridays at 9:00am Strength for Life with Tracy - A full-body strength and conditioning class for adults of all fitness levels. Fall Clinics Coming Soon Our summer clinic schedule will conclude in August, and we are already working on a new lineup of tennis and pickleball offerings for the fall season. Keep an eye out for the upcoming Fall Clinic Schedule and registration information.

COACH’S CORNER Tennis: As temperatures rise, managing energy becomes just as important as managing points. Stay hydrated before you step on court, use changeovers to recover, and focus on constructing points instead of trying to end them too early. The player who stays patient and manages the conditions often comes out ahead. Pickleball: Good pickleball players know when not to attack. During dink exchanges, focus on keeping the ball low and unattackable. The more pressure you can create through consistency and placement, the more likely your opponent is to give you the ball you're looking for. If you have any questions or need help getting signed up for an event, camp, or clinic, please reach out. Davis Humphries, Assistant Director of Tennis

He birdied the first playoff hole to punch his ticket to one of the game’s biggest stages. Many McConnell Golf members have followed Surratt’s journey for years. A standout junior golfer from Charlotte with ties to Providence Country Club, he went on to star at the University of Tennessee, earning first-team All-America honors and winning the SEC individual championship. He turned professional in 2024 and now competes for Jon Rahm’s Legion XIII team on LIV Golf. Surratt’s U.S. Open appearance marks another milestone in a career filled with accomplishments, but for those who watched him develop as a young player through the McConnell Golf scholarship program, it is especially rewarding to see him competing alongside the best players in the world. McConnell Golf congratulates Caleb on reaching his first U.S. Open and wishes him the best of luck at Shinnecock Hills.
