CLUB NEWS

It’s crazy to think that 25 years ago, someone had the vision to build a country club in the middle of a large subdivision what seemed at the time to be way out in the country Over the years, I’ve lost count of how many people have told me they used to hunt and fish out here

Fast forward to today, and the club is home to 1,000 families, right in the heart of a fully built-out, 2,600-home subdivision It has become a place where people move

often knowing no one and instantly find a welcoming community of memberswithopenarms.

I thought it would be nostalgic to look back on some of the more memorablemomentsandeventsoverthelast25years.

JASON DANIELS, EXECUTIVE CHEF

PROVIDENCE COUNTRY CLUB

“I started making this cookie for my daughter’s 6th birthday We were having her party at Carter Mountain The apple orchard is located in the hills of Virginia, and I wanted to have the perfect cookie for the day The crispy wheat shortbread with heavy-hitting seasonal spice plain and simple, was just the ticket. Needless to say, nibbling cookies and drinking warm cider on a crisp fall day is a heartwarming endeavor. I hope that they make you smile as I am while reminiscing about this time past.” -

INGREDIENTS:

6 ounces butter

¾ cup brown sugar

¾ cup sugar

1 teaspoon vanilla

2 eggs

1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour

1 ¾ cups wheat flour

½ teaspoon salt

2 ½ teaspoons cinnamon

1 teaspoon ground ginger

In a stand mixer, combine all wet ingredients excluding the eggs and mix on medium speed until ingredients have lightened in texture and are well creamed. Add eggs one at a time; remember to scrape the sides of the bowl down between and after additions. Turn the mixer off and add all sifted dry ingredients. Start the mixer at “stir” or the 1st speed setting and mix until completely combined and homogenous Mixing up to, but no longer than, 2 minutes Remove and wrap with plastic Can be refrigerated at this point and used in the future Dough holds well for up to 7 days Transfer the dough to a floured surface and with a rolling pin, roll to ¼” in thickness Cut into desired shapes and bake at 325 for approximately 7 minutes Allow to cool, drizzle with melted white chocolate, or dust with powdered sugar.

STAYINGSTRONG,STAYINGYOUNG–RESISTANCETRAINING

Ifyoucouldturnbacktheclockwithoutleavingtheclubhouse, wouldyou?Scienceshowsthatforthoseover 40, one of the most powerful “anti-aging” tools isn’t a magic pill or pricey treatment it’s the humble act of lifting weights. Whether it’s a set of dumbbells, a resistance machine, or even your own bodyweight, resistance training can keep you swinging a golf club (or racquet) with ease, carrying your own bag, and enjoyinganactivelifestylefordecadestocome

As individuals pass 40, the natural decline in muscle mass (sarcopenia), bone density, and metabolism accelerates, putting them at higher risk for frailty, osteoporosis, and chronic diseases. Regular resistance trainingeffectivelycounterstheseage-relatedchangesbystimulatingmuscleproteinsynthesisandbuilding

strength even in older adults This strength not only enhances mobility and everyday functionality like lifting, carrying, or maintaining balance but also reduces the risk of falls and fractures by fortifying bones through osteogenesis. Remarkably, a 2022 study reported that women performing heavy squats and deadlifts twice weekly experienced a 7% increase in bone mineral density over two years Moreover, resistance training boosts metabolism, aids in weight control, and improves cardiovascular and metabolic health by enhancing insulin sensitivity and reducing chronic disease risk factors.

Strength training also delivers vital hormonal and mental health benefits that uniquely support those over 40 Acute bouts of resistance exercise can trigger dramatic surges in growth hormone up to 18-fold in older men, promoting muscle repair and recovery Long-term strength training has been shown to moderately increase basal levels of anabolic hormones such as testosterone, IGF-1, and human growth hormone, along with improvements in DHEA-S and sex hormone-binding globulin, while helping regulate the stress hormone cortisol This multi-hormonal optimization supports metabolism, lean muscle preservation, fat burning, and hormonal equilibrium in both sexes For women, resistance training helps stabilize estrogen and progesterone balance and offers subtle increases in testosterone, positively affecting bone health, energy, and mood during perimenopause and beyond Additionally, the mental benefits are profound lifting weights sparks endorphin release, improves sleep, elevates mood, enhances self-esteem, and serves as a powerful tool for stress management Over time, this helps regulate cortisol responses and build resilience to daily stressors.

So, the next time you walk past the fitness center, remember those weights aren’t just for the young They’re your ticket to stronger swings, steadier steps, sharper focus, and a longer, more vibrant life. Pick them up, and you just might find yourself putting more life in your years, not just years in your life.

As always, we are here to help in any way we can Ryan Zimmerman, Fitness Director rzimmerman@treyburncc.com I 331.588.7890

GOLF TIPS FROM THE GOLF PROFESSIONAL STAFF

Fixing your trouble with BUNKER SHOTS

After watching a number of members struggle with bunker shots over the last few days, we felt now would be a good time to provide you with some tips that will improve your play from the sand. Remember, the goal in the bunker is not to hit the ball directly, but rather to use the sand to lift it out. A smooth, confident swing makes all the difference.

The setup to play a bunker shot is dramatically different than a tee shot or iron shot. Below are the steps to setup to play a shot from a greenside bunker correctly.

IN SWING PRINCIPLES

One of the keys to hitting bunker shots is to keep the face OPEN at all times. Remember, you are trying to hit the sand (not the ball) and slide the club somewhat under the ball. Maintaining an OPEN clubface is key to playing the shot correctly.

1 Open the clubface! This will aid you in a number of different ways but mostly it adds loft to the clubface making it easier to get the ball up at out of the bunker.

2. Take a wide stance and add some knee flex. This will help with stability as the sand is not as stable as the grass during a full shot

3 Lower your hands to where the grip is pointing about 3-4” below your belt line. Lowering the shaft will add loft to the club

4 Place the ball 2-3” behind your target side foot Never from the middle of your stance or back in your stance

5. Pick a spot 1-2” behind the ball and focus on hitting that spot.

1.Backswing: Rotate your chest away and begin hinging your wrist to set up a downward angle of attack. Keep your weight leaning towards the target! Never trying to lift or scoop the ball off your back foot. Remember, you are trying to slide the club under the ball.

2.Downswing: Begin your downswing with everything moving together. Unwind your chest, move your arms down, and start unloading your hinged wrists. DON’T DRAG THE GRIP. UNLOAD YOUR WRISTS!

3.Impact: Strike the sand slightly behind the ball and try to slide the club under the ball. It is important to maintain the open clubface so the glides through the sand.

4.Follow Through: Weight should be 80% on your target side foot with chest rotated out of the way. See the picture below of the best bunker in the history of the game: Seve Ballesteros.

FAIRWAY REPAIR

Heavy rain turned the dip at the end of the 18th fairway into a 3-foot wide, 4-foot-deep hole At first, our plan was to repair a 30-inch diameter drainage pipe, but we soon found the problem was a damaged 18 x 18 x 30 drainage tee This doubled the hole's size and required digging up three pipes instead of one

A custom tee would take three weeks, so to move forward as soon as possible, we used a prefabricated 4 x 4 concrete junction box. Finding an excavator big enough to set the 6,400-pound box by the next morning was another challenge, and four inches of rain over the next three days delayed us further We were finally able to set the box and complete the repair However, additional rainfall delayed sod installation for another week

Her cheerful personality and love of the game make her a perfect fit for our staff and we look forward to her joining Wakefield. Please stop by and introduce yourself.
