I would like to extend my sincere thanks to all our members who supported our community engagement initiative, Footprints on the Green We are truly fortunate to have such generous and dedicated individuals among us Your contributions directly benefit vital local programs, including Steppingstone Mission and the Cool Branch Fire Department & Rescue Squad fundraiser.

In 2016, Chad and Leah found their slice of paradise at Smith Mountain Lake, purchasing a cozy retreat in Union Hall. The lake quickly became their favorite escape a place to unwind, fish, take the boat out for a sunset cruise, and host gatherings with family and friends. Whether enjoying quiet mornings on the dock or laughter-filled weekends with loved ones, the lake has become an important part of their family’s story

As retirement approaches in 2026, Chad and Leah are looking forward to spending even more time at the lake before making it their full-time home Their decision to join The Water’s Edge was driven by their desire to fully embrace the lake lifestyle and by Chad’s love of golf and all things sports.

At the club, you’ll often find them exploring new activities, meeting neighbors, and soaking up the sense of community that makes The Water’s Edge so special. Please join us in giving Chad and Leah a very warm welcome to the lake!

The Delaney Family

John and Bridget Delaney both grew up in New York City and met while attending Stonehill College outside of Boston Over the years, they’ve lived in Connecticut and Chicago before settling in North Carolina in 1992. Today, they split their time between Union Hall and Greensboro.

The Delaneys have four children JP, Katie, Shane, and Molly and seven grandsons ranging in age from one to nine

In 2003, John founded an advertising agency in Greensboro, where he now works alongside his two sons When he’s not at the office, he enjoys motorcycling, skiing, hunting, and boating At six-footten, John is hard to miss especially now that he’s back on the golf course after many “dormant” years.

Bridget, an avid gardener, lovingly tends to her plants when she’s not busy with her children and grandchildren, all of whom live within 90 minutes of Greensboro She’s outgoing, energetic, and always excited to make new friends

The Delaneys joined as Invitational Members to enjoy golf and the facilities at The Water’s Edge, Sedgefield, The Cardinal, and Old North State Club, where they already share friendships with many current McConnell Golf members. They are eager to dive into The Water’s Edge community.

The Ackerman Family

We are Scott and Juliana Ackerman from Gainesville, VA, where we raised our three children Our daughter, Erin, is married to Eli and lives in Charlotte, NC, while our sons, Michael and Ben, are students at the University of South Carolina.

Scott grew up vacationing at Smith Mountain Lake, and in 2010 we began bringing our own kids here We had always dreamed of owning a lake house where we could spend time with family and friends, and we feel fortunate to have found our place at Water’s Edge

As we enter the empty-nesting stage and look toward retirement, we’re excited to spend more time at the lake golfing, enjoying all kinds of water sports, and exploring both the lake and the community.

The Karniewicz Family

Meet Ted and Judy Karniewicz and their children Maddie (18), Lawson (15), and McKenna (12) Judy is a native Virginian whose family roots in the area trace back to the 1650s, while Ted is a native of south Florida The two met at the University of Florida, where Judy was in law school and Ted was completing his master’s degree in Health Care Administration After graduating, they settled in Tampa, Florida, where Ted now serves as Senior Director for Optum and Judy practices law at the firm she founded, The Karniewicz Law Group.

Their children are active and ambitious: Maddie is graduating high school this year and plans to study law, following in her mother’s footsteps Lawson runs cross country, participates in JROTC, and hopes to pursue aerospace engineering at Emory University like his father McKenna is an avid athlete who plays flag football, volleyball, and soccer In her spare time, she helped her mom found R&K Animal Sanctuary, Inc , a nonprofit rescue the family is growing on their 100-acre farm in Pittsville, Virginia.

The Karniewicz family joined The Water’s Edge as the perfect complement to their Virginia home away from home. The club offers something for everyone: Ted can often be found on the golf course, Lawson at the gym, Judy and McKenna at the Equestrian Center, and Maddie soaking up life on Smith Mountain Lake

The Malinak Family

Please join us in welcoming Jeff and Ria Malinak as new Invitational Members of Water’s Edge! Ria and Jeff are relocating this fall from Potomac, Maryland to Raleigh, in order to be (much) closer to their daughter, Kristen, her husband, Hank, and their new Grandbaby, Addison. Jeff and Ria recently bought a house in Park Place where they look forward to spending time and generating happy memories with Kristen, Hank, Addison, their oldest son, Kevin and his wife, Brianna, who live in East Lansing, Michigan, and their youngest son, David, who lives in the D C area

Neither Jeff nor Ria is a native of the D C area Jeff grew up in Houston and Ria grew up abroad but went to boarding school in Atlanta at a young age and never left the U.S. They met at Graduate Business School in Austin, Texas, and worked briefly in Houston before moving to Maryland. Jeff is a mostly-retired partner from a Boston-based economic consulting firm and Ria is a finance and accounting manager for a family office based out of Atlanta

Jeff, David, and Hank all play golf and are looking forward to being out on the Water’s Edge course as much as possible! All three also play pickleball and Jeff plays tennis Ria and Kristen share a love of horses and are looking forward to enjoying the equestrian center at Water’s Edge The Malinak family is excited to be members of the Water’s Edge community and look forward to enjoying good times there for years to come!

The Nichols Family

Jennifer and Garrett Nichols hail from Durham, NC, where they raised their children, Will and Kate The Nichols have an all-ACC lineage – Garrett graduated from UVA and completed his medical training at Duke, while Jennifer, Will, and Kate are proud UNC alumni (making basketball season especially lively!)

Garrett serves as Chief Medical Officer for two companies developing cancer immunotherapies, while Jennifer works part-time as a realtor and part-time as zookeeper to their two dogs and two cats

After living as far away as Seattle and London, the Nichols are excited to “dive in” to life at Water’s Edge and Smith Mountain Lake Garrett and Will are avid golfers, Kate and Jennifer are passionate equestrians, and all four enjoy tennis – with aspirations of becoming professional pickleball players.

They look forward to meeting everyone soon!

The Walden Family

Clif, originally from Danville, has been connected to Smith Mountain Lake for as long as he can remember He spent his childhood summers here, making memories on the water and even working at The Water’s Edge during his younger years before heading off to James Madison University. It was there that he met Kim, a New Jersey native whose adventurous spirit and love of the outdoors fit right in with lake life.

After graduation, Clif returned to Danville to join the family business, Riverside Roof Truss Together, he and Kim have built a busy, joyfilled life with their two sons, Clif (8) and Henry (6) The boys have followed in their dad’s footsteps, growing up spending countless weekends at the lake fishing, swimming, and soaking up the sunshine

For the Walden family, Smith Mountain Lake is the perfect retreat a place to unwind, connect, and create lasting memories with friends and family When they’re not out on the boat, you can usually find the boys riding bikes to the pool or joining their parents for a quick round of golf

The Water’s Edge community is delighted to welcome the Walden family home to the lake!

Cool Branch Fire & Rescue Squad Fundraiser Update

We are excited to announce that, thanks to the incredible generosity and spirit of our community, the Cool Branch Live & Silent Auction Fundraiser was an overwhelming success!

This year’s event raised an astounding $251,041 to support the Cool Branch Fire & Rescue Squad funds that will make a lasting impact by helping to maintain 24/7 EMT coverage for our area. Additional contributions continue to come in, so this impressive total will only grow!

The success of this event is a true reflection of what makes our community so special neighbors coming together to support those who dedicate their lives to keeping us safe. From our generous donors and sponsors to the volunteers who worked tirelessly behind the scenes, and everyone who bid, attended, or spread the word we extend our deepest gratitude.

Your enthusiasm and compassion made this night one to remember, filled with friendly competition, laughter, and a shared sense of purpose. Every item donated, every bid placed, and every dollar contributed brings us one step closer to ensuring that the Cool Branch Fire & Rescue Squad has the resources they need to serve us all.

Thank you for your generosity, your support, and your heart for community. Together, we are making a real and lasting difference.

COURSEUPDATE

Renovation Timeline:

JEFFSNYDER,GOLFCOURSESUPERINTENDENT

Thank you all for your patience during the recent overseeding process. We're happy with the initial progress and have made several return passes to reseed weaker areas. The thinnest spots mainly the holes and tees are those where we were most aggressive in removing the common Bermuda that had taken over. These areas should catch up to the rest of the course soon

The late-summer schedule we developed to prepare for next year’s renovation has been executed well, and the course is positioned to be in great shape heading into spring

Looking ahead, I’ll be working with a tree contractor this winter to improve sunlight exposure, which will help our new Bermuda fairways thrive. We've also had multiple planning meetings with Richard Mandell to define the scope of the renovation work, and we’re excited to share the finalized conceptual plans with you soon These changes are going to be transformational, and I can’t overstate how exciting this next chapter will be

· Course Closure: After Memorial Day 2026

· Fairways/Tees: Begin kill-off process, followed by aggressive aerification to prepare for sprigging

· Sprigging: Once complete, irrigation will be turned on to begin the grow-in phase

· Target Reopening: Labor Day Weekend 2026

To keep the greens performing well through the spring, we’ll skip spring aerification this year and wait until the course closes

The Pro Shop will soon share the spring tournament schedule, with the highlight being our May Member-Guest event

We understand the summer closure will be tough without golf, but we’re committed to keeping members engaged through various club activities. The temporary inconvenience will be well worth it once the renovation is complete. Thank you again for your continued support.

WE CARE TOY DRIVE

When We Care started in 1990, the goal was to provide Christmas to a few underprivileged children in Franklin County. Several businesses and individuals came together, raised money, and provided for several children that year From that point, it has grown into We Care helping over 1,000 underprivileged children at Christmas alone Their Christmas event involves having approximately 100 volunteers over a period of a week During the week they have the parents of the children come and shop at their Christmas "store".

At the end of the week, they have a party for the children The party involves refreshments, games, and, of course, SANTA CLAUS. Just to see the look on a child's face when they see Santa and knowing that they will have something to open on Christmas morning makes more meaningful One of the amazing qualities of their organization is that every dollar that is donated stays right here in Franklin County. We Care relies solely on donations that they receive from the community that allow them to continue having such a wonderful event. As part of The Water’s Edge Footprints on the Green initiative, we are collecting new, unwrapped toys from November 1st-December 6th. There will be a drop box at the clubhouse for donations.

If you have in questions or would like to volunteer for We Care, please call Jerry W. Greer at 540-483-7900. If you would like to send a monetary donation, please mail to : WE Care Of Franklin County, Inc., P O Box 396 Rocky Mount, VA 24151 WE LIVE HERE-WE GIVE HERE

NOVEMBER COOKIE OF THE MONTH

Patrick Budniewski, Executive Chef at Holston Hills Country Club

WalnutCranberry Cookie

“This Walnut Cranberry Cookie combines the nutty crunch of toasted walnuts with the tart sweetness of dried cranberries. Soft and buttery with a hint of brown sugar and vanilla, it’s a perfect balance of rich, chewy, and slightly tangy flavors in every bite

½ cup butter, softened

¼ cup milk

2 tablespoons orange juice

1 egg, whole

3 cups all-purpose flour

4 In a separate bowl, sift together flour, baking powder, cinnamon, salt, and baking soda

DECEMBER COOKIE OF THE MONTH

Chewy Oatmeal Cookies withBlueberriesandWhite ChocolateChips

John Hanek, Executive Chef at The Water’s Edge Country Club

“I have experimented with the original Oatmeal Cookie recipes using many different ingredients. This combination was my favorite and it quickly became a necessity on my hiking adventures.” - John Hanek

Ingredients

2 cup unsalted butter, softened to room temperature

2 cup packed light or dark brown sugar

1/2 cup granulated sugar

4 large eggs*

2 tablespoons pure vanilla extract

1 tablespoon molasses

3 cups all-purpose flour

Directions

2 teaspoons baking soda

3 teaspoons ground cinnamon

1 teaspoon salt

6 cups old-fashioned oats

2 cups dried blueberries

1 cup white chocolate chips

Using a hand mixer or a stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment, cream the softened butter and both sugars together on medium speed until smooth, about 2 minutes Add the eggs and mix on high until combined, about 1 minute Scrape down the sides and bottom of the bowl as needed Add the vanilla and molasses and mix on high until combined Set aside

In a separate bowl, whisk the flour, baking soda, cinnamon, and salt together Add to the wet ingredients and mix on low until combined Beat in the oats, dry blueberries, and white chocolate chips on low speed Dough will be thick, yet very sticky Chill the dough for 30-60 minutes in the refrigerator (do the full hour if you’re afraid of the cookies spreading too much). If chilling for longer (up to 2 days), allow to sit at room temperature for at least 30 minutes before rolling and baking.

Preheat oven to 350°F (177°C). Line two large baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone baking mats. Set aside. Roll balls of dough (about 2 tablespoons of dough per cookie) and place 2 inches apart on the baking sheets. I recommend using a cookie scoop since the dough can be sticky. Bake for 12-14 minutes until lightly browned on the sides. The centers will look very soft and underbaked. Remove from the oven and let cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely. The cookies will continue to “set” on the baking sheet during this time.
