The Doran Family

Meet Mary and Mike Doran! Originally from West Virginia, they now call Florida home but have recently found their perfect summer getaway at Water’s Edge. After a couple of years of searching for the right spot, they knew Smith Mountain Lake was the place to be!

Family is a big part of their lives especially their two daughters and grandkids, who live in Charlotte, NC, and Connecticut. Mary loves planning trips to visit them (and sneaking in a little extra travel along the way), while Mike stays busy as the Deputy Chief Operating Officer and Chief Safety and Health Officer for American Water.

When they’re at Water’s Edge, you’ll likely find them out on the golf course, enjoying the lake, or just soaking up everything this wonderful community has to offer Be sure to say hello when you see them around!

The Litchfield Family

Bruce and Linda Litchfield currently reside in Fort Worth, Texas, but they have been acquainted with SML since the late 1980’s, and have owned property at the lake for the past 15 years They are looking forward to making Water’s Edge their permanent home! They have two adult children, Matt, 30 and Jennifer, 26. Both are proud Oklahoma State University graduates. Matt is a software engineer at Tinker Air Force Base near Oklahoma City, and Jennifer, is finishing her Law Degree at University of Virginia, with plans to practice Intellectual Property Law in Washington, D C

Bruce and Linda grew up in Connecticut and upstate New York, respectively Bruce was on active duty in the Air Force for 34 years Following his service, he transitioned to industry as a Vice President with Lockheed Martin. Linda also retired from the Air Force with a combination of active and Reserve service. Despite the Air Force ties, both children were born with the Navy – Matt at Newport, Rhode Island and Jennifer at Bethesda, Maryland.

Bruce and Linda enjoy golfing, boating and jet skiing, hiking, attending shows and concerts as well as traveling. They are looking forward to joining this vibrant community soon and meeting new neighbors and making new friends!

Jacob, their oldest, recently moved to the Ft Worth, TX area for work after graduating college Matthew is a senior at JMU (Go Dukes!), and Ethan is finishing his second year of college in Maryland. Troy and Rachel enjoy traveling, watching Orioles games, and exploring lake life. You can soon find them taking beginner golf lessons and getting to know their new neighborhood with their two goldendoodles, who are convinced they run the house!

They are so excited to be a part of this great community!

Originally from Pennsylvania, Steve and Cathy Grossbauer now live and work in Raleigh, NC. After years of dreaming about lake life, they’re thrilled to have finally made that dream come true with a home at Water’s Edge With four grown children and four grandchildren, they’re especially excited for all the opportunities to gather, relax, and create meaningful memories with family and friends at the lake

Spring has officially sprung and so did the sky right into a leak! Despite the very wet weather, we had 25 brave ladies show up ready to play The rain turned it into a quick 9-hole round, but the spirits stayed high!

Most players had time to head home, dry off, warm up, and return refreshed for a lovely dinner The Club truly outdid themselves with a wonderful selection of menu choices that catered to all tastes! Every dish was thoughtfully prepared and beautifully presented, making the evening feel extra special To top it off, the dining room was decorated with fresh spring touches, creating a warm, festive atmosphere that perfectly matched the spirit of Opening Day. It was clear a lot of care and attention went into every detail and it didn’t go unnoticed!

COURSEUPDATE

JEFFSNYDER,GOLFCOURSESUPERINTENDENT

Spring is in the air, and you can feel the golf season coming! For those who haven’t been onsite recently, here’s a look at the work we’ve been doing behind the scenes to get the course ready for a fantastic season.

⛳ Course Maintenance Highlights

Greens were aerified March 17–18.

We’ve moved this date up in recent years to ensure better post-aerification conditions following the Masters weekend With our A1-A4 greens mix, warmer soil temps are ideal and we’re counting on Mother Nature to help

us out After a few frosty nights, the greens aren’t 100% just yet, but we expect excellent conditions by the end of April

Tees and roughs have also been aerified, and we completed bulk fertilization with preemergent on April 3rd

A reminder for those tending their own lawns: when the forsythia blooms, it's time for your pre-emergent! You’ll get the best control if applied within a couple weeks of bloom. We’ve removed all dead trees around the course, and stump grinding is underway.

These areas will be seeded following fertilization

Poa annua is in full bloom

We’re making multiple control applications on greens, tees, and fairways Please note, this is a “management” process, not full removal our goal is to keep it at bay and maintain turf quality

Staff & Member Support

Staffing continues to be a challenge at times, but we’re committed to keeping the course in top shape and tackling improvement projects when possible. Your help makes a big difference. Help us keep the course in top shape here are a few simple things every golfer can do that make a huge difference:

1 Fix Ball Marks Properly

Use a repair tool to gently lift and push the turf back toward the center Don’t lift the soil and never dig! A properly fixed mark heals in 24 hours Unrepaired? It can take weeks

2 Replace or Fill Divots -

If your divot is intact, put it back in and press it down with your foot

If it shattered, use the sand mix provided. Lightly fill and smooth with your foot for best results.

3. Rake Bunkers Like a Pro

After your shot, rake the sand smooth including your footprints and divot Then, place the rake back in the bunker, handle resting on the edge, perpendicular to the lip This helps maintain playability and protects the equipment

4 Keep Carts on Path Near Tees & Greens

We know it’s tempting to cut corners, but keeping carts on designated paths in sensitive areas preserves turf health and reduces wear patterns

 A Quick Reminder:

The golf course is for golf only

No walking or recreational use is permitted especially as we head into a busy season This is for everyone’s safety

EQUESTRIAN CENTER NEWS

KRISTINAWRAY,EQUESTRIANCENTERMANAGER

Spring is nearly over and summer is just around the corner! Spring brings new life, vibrant beauty and lots of pollen. If you've been outside lately, you've probably noticed everything has taken on a yellow tint Seasonal allergies can be a nuisance, even for our four-legged friends Handsome, in particular, has been fighting the pollen battle and is now on special medication for his runny nose and watery eyes Thankfully, the rest of the horses are handling it well, and even the pig and the cat have been happily soaking up the beautiful sunshine

With summer fast approaching, my staff and I have been hard at work on several exciting projects to spruce things up around here. We’ve added an expansion area to the left side of the barn, which will help accommodate more guests during events. The fence at Marina Bay is getting some much-needed TLC, and we’ve added fresh gravel to the parking area and new mulch to the flower beds. My goal is always to provide a space that is not only safe and enjoyable but also beautiful and welcoming

Exciting news our barn events are officially on the calendar! We'll be hosting our annual ice cream socials, along with bingo nights, paint nights, movie nights, and more! We’re thrilled to create opportunities for making lasting memories together this year

Summer horse camps still have spots available!! They tend to fill up quickly once school is out, so if you haven’t signed up your camper yet, give me a call at the barn at 540-576-2714 or send an email to barn@watersedgecountryclub com You won’t want to miss out on all the fun we have planned for this summer! Camp flyers with all the information can be sent via email or be picked up at the Equestrian Center or at the sales office.

If you would like to sign up your child for camp feel free to email me at barn@watersedgecountryclub.com or call the barn at (540) 576-2714
