Mary & Patrick Wire reside in the Raleigh area of NC and have enjoyed summers at SML for almost 20 years. They both work as independent consultants in the pharmaceutical industry. Now semi-retired, this summer kicks off more fun at the lake They spend time kayaking, paddle boarding, swimming, sailing, and hiking Mary defines bliss as water skiing by the mountain and there isn’t a bass in the lake that Patrick doesn’t want to catch
With membership to Water’s Edge, golf has been added to the fun (& frustration!) and they are looking forward to meeting other members to spend time with on and off the course The Wire’s have three grown children living in NC and VA; Ethan is a dentist and avid golfer, and his wife Shannon is completing a fellowship with the National Science Foundation and learning to ride horses, Sienna is an assistant farm manager at a small college (pigs are her favorite) and likes to garden, and Addison, who loves nature and the outdoors, is a college student considering options in construction and sustainable technology
It’s great to be at The Water’s Edge. I’m extremely happy to be here. As you may have read in the welcome email last month, I’m coming to you all from Pete Dye River Course of Virginia Tech, another McConnell Golf property. I’m excited for this opportunity to join the team. Everyone's been so kind and welcoming my first few weeks here. I’ll be splitting time between The Waters edge and The River Course through July and then be with you all full-time beginning in August.
Two of my biggest passions are retail and instruction. An online survey was sent in June regarding the merchandise; I look forward to gathering your feedback and inputs and seeing how we can make the retail operation a successful one. I developed a stronger passion for teaching during the Covid years. Spring of 2020. I resigned from Hidden Valley Country Club to stay at home with my twins, and during that three year stretch I gave private lessons in my free time. I've taught everyone from the true beginner to the Division-I golfer to the club champion, as well as the person who just doesn't want to be the worst in their foursome. I use Vision 1 software on my iPad to record swings and provide video recaps to all of my students. If you’re seeking help in your game, I look forward to the opportunity to assist you!
We would like to extend our sincere thanks to everyone who brought a guest to participate in this year’s Member/Guest tournament. We hope you all enjoyed the course and the wonderful company of the ladies you competed alongside. The competition was fierce this year, and it was a pleasure to witness such enthusiasm, sportsmanship, and camaraderie throughout the event We appreciate your continued support and look forward to seeing you again next year!
We’re excited to invite you to join us for our Tuesday Clinics, followed by a round of golf, and Ladies Day every Thursday It’s the perfect way to improve your game and enjoy the season with friends We hope to see you soon!
The summer season is buzzing with energy, and it’s been wonderful to see so many of you enjoying everything the club has to offer. The Ladies Member-Member, Ladies MemberGuest, and Men’s Member Guest were all very successful.
This is what life at The Water’s Edge is all about-good times with great friends As always, our team is here to ensure every visit is as enjoyable as possible
The course is improving daily, and we’re focused on maintaining strong conditions heading into the heart of summer. After the Men’s Member-Guest, we’ll be deep aerifying the greens to promote better subsurface water movement and stronger root growth. Throughout the summer, we’ll also perform shallow aerification to help reduce thatch and enhance moisture infiltration both with minimal disruption to putting surfaces.
We’ve seen a notably reduced presence of Annual Bluegrass Weevil (ABW) this year While we can’t completely eliminate these pests, we can manage them So far, we’ve made three targeted applications, with two more scheduled, and will assess the need for a third based on monitoring thresholds
To combat Poa annua, multiple applications have been made on greens, tees, and fairways. While this treatment can extend the presence of seed heads slightly, it contributes significantly to smoother playing surfaces
As play increases, please help us maintain great conditions by following these best practices:
Ball Marks: Repair your own, and if time allows, one more Divots: With bentgrass, always replace your divot If it’s intact, step it down firmly If partial, replace what you can and sand and smooth thoroughly
Bunker Rakes: When exiting a bunker, place the rake back into the bunker, with the handle resting in the grass and the head fully inside this prevents broken handles and keeps bunkers tidy. Carts:
Scatter traffic and stay well away from greens
Geo-fencing on carts is active please heed these boundaries
Walking or private carts are not permitted on the course at any time for safety reasons If t i i t t b ibl f d th
Summer is in full swing, and if you’re anything like all of us, we are enjoying it but are trying to stay cool. The horses have been gathering around the water tubs, and Russell has been playing in his mud hole. It has been a great summer so far, our camps have been super successful, and we have really enjoyed seeing all of you and your little ones There are still camps that do have room for other campers so if you haven’t signed up yet, you can do so by calling or emailing me we want to make this the best summer yet
Please also remember that feeding treats after Barn hours is prohibited if you would like to come see the horses and feed them treats, please come during barn hours and have barn staff evaluate your treats before giving them out.
Summer horse camps still have spots available!! They tend to fill up quickly once school is out, so if you haven’t signed up your camper yet, give me a call at the barn at 540-576-2714 or send an email to barn@watersedgecountryclub.com You won’t want to miss out on all the fun we have planned for this summer! Camp flyers with all the information can be sent via email or be picked up at the Equestrian Center or at the sales office
If you would like to sign up your child for camp feel free to email me at barn@watersedgecountryclub com or call the barn at (540) 576-2714
Horses can sunburn, specifically ones with pink skin? Their muzzle is the most prone to sunburn
Typically horses drink 5 to 15 gallons of water a day but on these hot summer days they drink 10 to 15 gallons of water a day
Pigs cannot sweat so they bathe in water and mud to cool off? This is why Russell has his mud hole in his pasture

Prep Time: 5 minutes
Cook Time: 10 minutes
Total Time: 15 mins
Yield: 16 cookies
Equipment: mixing bowl, cookie sheet, parchment paper sheets, cookie scoops
1 standard butter pecan cake mix (just the dry mix!)
2 eggs, room temperature
1/3 cup oil
1/2 teaspoon salt
Powdered sugar for rolling dough in
Directions
1 Preheat the oven to 350°F and line a cookie sheet with parchment paper Set aside
2.In a large bowl, combine the eggs, oil, and salt. Mix well.
3.Add the dry cake mix and mix until smooth and no clumps remain.
4.Use a 1-ounce cookie scoop to scoop out cookies.
5 Roll cookie dough in powdered sugar
6.Place 2 inches apart on the prepared cookie sheet. Bake for 7 minutes or until the cookies have puffed up and are set around the edges but still a little undercooked in the middle.
Note: Allow to cool completely before eating!
Ingredients
8 ounces full fat cream cheese room temperature
1/2 cup butter room temperature
1 1/4 cup granulated sugar
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt

Beat cream cheese and butter together at high speed until fluffy and smooth, 1-2 minutes Add sugar to the butter mixture and beat until fully incorporated and fluffy, 1-2 minutes Beat in the eggs and vanilla for 1 minute
In a separate, medium-sized bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture and stir just until incorporated. Do not overmix.
Drop by rounded tablespoons onto the prepared baking sheets about 2 inches apart; the batter will be sticky (You can put the batter in the fridge for 10-20 minutes to help it firm up a bit )
Bake at 350 degrees for 10-11 minutes Cookies should be light in color, not browned, and just starting to brown on the bottom. Length of baking time may vary from oven to oven.
