Club Update
A NOTE FROM ROBERT LAMBERT YOUR CLUB MANAGER
Welcome to September! The weather will hopefully start to cool down so we can continue enjoying all the outdoor activities at The Water’s Edge Country Club. Fall is traditionally considered by many a great time of the year to play golf. Weather conditions are usually ideal this time of the year. The cooler temperatures produce low humidity, changing foliage, and exceptional playing conditions. All golfers should make sure to take advantage of this weather and play as many rounds as possible over the next few months.
Golfers shouldn’t be the only ones to take advantage of this spectacular time of the year. Tennis players and Pickleballers should also come out and enjoy the beautiful Fall weather. We are very excited about the enthusiasm of our Pickleball group. We’ve have had two successful Pickleball socials and l am looking forward to the next one.
Samantha Lester our equestrian manager has also been busy with her horse camps, bingo nights, movie nights, and young equestrian camps! Thank you to Samantha and everyone who has supported her events.
Many of our staff have returned to school and some of our members will be returning home to prepare their kids for the start of the new school year. I would like to thank our staff for their hard work all summer long and throughout the year and to all the members for your continual support and attendance of club events.
A NOTE FROM JEFF SNYDER YOUR GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENT

“Summer blues” are certainly in full swing for golf course managers. Hazy, hot, and dry. Greens have held up very well with the multiple aerifications we’ve been doing. Keeping the greens “breathing” is crucial during the hot summer. Along with more topdressing, greens have been rolling as good as ever. The majority of the grass we have lost has been Poanna, which in itself is not a bad thing, just very unsightly. We will begin seeding these areas soon. Just waiting for the weather to break a bit for better survival. The course has gotten a little soft as we get later into the season. Multiple factors contribute to this. Without adequate rainfall, turf likes about an inch a week, it’s difficult to get the water deep. I do believe our investments with more wetting agents have helped and we will continue if not enhance these practices. The topdressing we did in late winter has grown over and discussions are being had to do more throughout the season. Our goal is to be the best, and we will continue to strive to get there!!
COURSE REMINDERS
Cool season turf divots can survive when replaced. Please replace them and step down. If only a portion is in tack, replace that and sand the balance. Too many are just being sanded and many aren’t being smoothed with foot. This plays hell on the mowers and can be avoided.

Ball marks should be fixed and one other. If all practiced this, we wouldn’t have any
issues. Please be courteous to your fellow golfers.
Private carts, bikes, skateboards, etc. are not permitted on the course at any time. Please let your guests and children aware of these rules.
Practicing is also not permitted on the course, and we remain closed on Mondays. Some are still venturing out after hours and breaking these rules.
Summer is winding down and we look forward to some relief from the heat. We have had an excellent year with lots of great tournaments. Fall here at Smith Mountain Lake brings lots of great weather and beautiful views with the changing leaves. There are still a lot of great tournaments still on the Schedule. Hope to see you at the club very soon.
Our Men’s Member-Member Tournament will be on October 1st-3rd. On Friday Night will have Stag Night and 18
Holes of Golf on Saturday and Sunday. More details to come.
The Cool Branch Fire and Rescue Benefit Golf Tournament will be held on October 8th. Please come out and help us show our support for this very worthy cause.
