SCC BUZZ

CELEBRATING TEN YEARS We hope you will join us on Saturday, September 11, 2021, on the event lawn in front of the clubhouse as we celebrate our tenth year with McConnell Golf. The club was acquired on February 1, 2011, and since that time has undergone transformations of all shapes and sizes that have enhanced the membership experience and surrounding property values alike. Some of the projects include conversion of the greens from bent grass to bermudagrass, the Wall of Champions behind #9 green, an improved bag drop, golf parking lot, and cart staging area, updated restrooms and stone bridges and the addition of native grass areas on the golf course, a new short game area and storage facility by our Wyndham Championship partners, a wrap-around deck on the Sam Snead Cottage, the addition of an event lawn in front of the clubhouse, interior redesign of the clubhouse main level, boardroom and ballroom, and the John P. McConnell Activities Center which houses the fitness center, Greenside Café, and underground golf cart storage to name a few. It has been an incredible ten years and truly an honor to have been along for the ride. I am excited to celebrate the club's successes with you on Saturday, September 11, 2021.

MEMBERSHIP WELCOME TO OUR NEWEST SEDGEFIELD MEMBERS Pam Gillette; daughters Georgia (22) & Paige (16) As a new member of Sedgefield, Pam is looking forward to, “lots of golf, great food and spending time with friends!” Referred to the club by current member Steve Anderson, she is also friends with Bill & ClaraJo Pleasants. Originally from Tallahassee, Fl, Pam is an alumni of Florida State University and Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. When not playing golf and working on improving her game, she enjoys hiking, boating, traveling, walking, running, biking, and also playing croquet and tennis.

Dr. Miles Rudd & Holly Robinson-Rudd Although they have recently relocated to the area from Oregon, Dr. Rudd is no stranger to Greensboro! He was born in Greensboro and grew up in Brown Summit, while Holly is from Oregon. Dr. Rudd is a newly retired family physician, and most recently served as a Captain with the US Public Health Service, where he was with the Indian Health Service for 27 years. Holly owns and operates Federal Contract Management Services, Inc., specializing in government sales consulting. With their membership at Sedgefield, they are looking forward to utilizing the dining options, bars, social events, and fitness center. They are avid wine enthusiasts and remain members of three northwest wineries even after relocating to the east coast. “We are really glad to have settled into the Sedgefield Teahouse. We love the varied history of the house and look forward to caring for it. We are empty-nesters, so we now dote on our two French Bulldogs, Angus and Roux.” Please join us in welcoming the Rudds to membership and the Sedgefield family!

Sam & Laura Johnson Please join us in welcoming the Johnsons back to membership within Sedgefield! Sponsored into the club by Kelly Brame, there is a list of many other members they are looking forward to reconnecting with at the club. Sam is the Sales Manager for United Electric Sales and Laura owns and operates The CottageHP, LLC, a boutique store in High Point.

The Johnsons have three adult children and four grandchildren spread across Texas, Colorado & Charlotte. “Laura and I are very excited to be members of Sedgefield CC again. We missed the club during our years away, and look forward to renewing many friendships and to many fun times!”

Brad is originally from the Boston area, while Lori is from Greenville, SC. MEMBERSHIP WELCOME TO OUR NEWEST SEDGEFIELD MEMBERS Andrew Reynolds and Kathleen Duckworth Andrew grew up in South Carolina before moving to Trinity, NC, where he continued his education after high school at UNC Greensboro, serving as the President of Sigma Epsilon. He is currently a Consultant for Morgan Samuels, an Executive Search Firm based out of Los Angeles, where he focuses on helping Private Equity firms, Private Equity backed companies, and public companies find cross-functional executive talent.

Andrew is excited to connect with members and progress in his golf game at the club. Kathleen is a native of Greensboro, where after attending UNC Charlotte, she moved back home and met Andrew after the clock struck midnight on New Year's over two years ago. She is currently an Outreach Manager for WoodmenLife insurance covering 46 local chapters across the state and an active member of The Junior League of Greensboro. She’s excited for all the amenities the club has to offer as well as learning the game of golf. Please join us in welcoming Andrew & Kathleen to Sedgefield!

David and Mary Helen Jackson Join us in welcoming the Jackson Family to Sedgefield! David and Mary Helen Jackson have been married for 34 years and have 3 adult children: Kelsey, Darby, and Eric. They have lived in the Triad area for almost 30 years after relocating from Montgomery, AL where David served in the Air Force. Mary Helen grew up in Greensboro and Jamestown, and David in Abbeville, SC. Both are graduates of Clemson University and are avid Clemson Tiger fans, especially football. On any given Saturday in the Fall, they can be found at a Clemson football game. David and Mary Helen have owned ServiceMaster Building Care, a commercial cleaning company that services Greensboro, High Point, and surrounding areas since 1995. They enjoy traveling, reading, and attending concerts, and sporting events. As new members of SCC, David is looking forward to getting back into playing golf, and Mary Helen is considering learning to play herself. They are also looking forward to meeting new friends and enjoying all that the Club has to offer.

Mike is originally from Ohio but spent many years in Louisiana and Texas as a Petroleum Engineer, and as he proclaims, is “luckily” retired! Mike & Stephanie have two adult daughters and four grandchildren, all of whom they love spending time with. OCTOBER IS NATIONAL BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH In honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, all McConnell Golf properties will be taking part in a fundraiser benefiting the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

Last year, we raised over $3,800 to support the Susan G. Komen Foundation. With Bank of America's TRIPLE matching, McConnell Golf was able to donate almost $12,000!

HALLOWEEN CAR & CANDY TRICK OR TREATING

Ingredients:

2:00pm – 4:00pm

2 ounces pumpkin ale 1 ounce bourbon 1/2 ounce amaretto 1/2 ounce agave nectar 1 teaspoon pumpkin butter 1 whole egg Garnish: nutmeg, freshly grated

Load your Ghouls and Ghosties into the Car for Drive Through Trick-OrTreating at Sedgefield! There will be no shortage of tricks or treats at this fun drive-through experience as we stage the perimeter of the front lawn with trick or treat stations. This event is complimentary, however, an RSVP will ensure we have enough treats for everyone!

Directions: Add all ingredients except sparkling wine into a cocktail shaker with ice.

Add the pumpkin ale, bourbon, amaretto, agave nectar, pumpkin butter, and whole egg into a shaker and dry-shake (without ice) vigorously. Add ice and shake very hard until well-chilled and frothy. Strain into a rock's glass. Top with grated nutmeg.

KIDS AND FAMILY A NOTE FROM YOUR MEMBER ACTIVITIES DIRECTOR It is hard to believe September is already here and that I have been with Sedgefield for a full year! It has been such a joy getting to know many of you. Kids Club has been busier than ever and I hope to continue to see new faces each Friday evening.

This summer was definitely one for the books! We offered four weeks of camps, and each one was a blast. We played tennis, fought crime, and everyone's favorite, lots of pool time! If you didn't get a chance to join us for camp this summer, be sure to join us next year as you don't want to miss the fun!

KIDS CLUB FRIDAYS 6:00pm-9:00pm | $10++ per child; $5++ per each subsequent child in the same family. Dinner is included. We request that children are pottytrained. As a reminder, we ask that parents remain on the property and utilize all the club has to offer during Kids Club. The Embassy Grille, Red Fox Lounge, or Greenside Café provide great "Date Night" venues, or even get in workout or a tennis or pickleball match.

Jack Buckland, grandchild of Cotten Moring in his Elvis disguise during our Secret Agent Camp! Four of Mrs. Moring's grandchildren, Jack, Wyatt, Chloe, and Lucy, were able to join us for camp. Mrs. Moring complimented us by saying "what a fabulous time our grandkids had at camp this week. Every single day they woke up excited about the day ahead. Not one of them (and all 4 of them spent the nights with us) said they didn't feel like going that day. Emily took her boys home today, back to Virginia, after the camp was over and she just called to tell me that they talked about camp for one solid hour during the trip home.

They told her that they loved all of the counselors, the activities and that it was just the best time."

MCCONNELL GOLF NEWS His top 30 effort earned him a check for $41,013 and a spot in the Korn Ferry Tour Finals, the three-event series that determines PGA Tour eligibility for the 2021-22 season. Smalley has made the cut in all five of his PGA Tour starts and earned enough FedExCup points to finish inside the top-200 and qualify for the Korn Ferry playoffs.

Smalley joined Sedgefield in June of 2020 and estimates he has played 75 rounds or more on the classic Donald Ross design. “I feel pretty comfortable with the lines on each hole,” he said during the week. “The course is always in really good shape. It’s playing a little different than it usually does for us. There’s a little more runout in the fairways, which has changed a couple of the clubs that I hit off of the tee. The greens are a little quicker, but other than that, it’s the same golf course.”

KEVIN KISNER WINS WILD 6-MAN PLAYOFF AT THE WYNDHAM CHAMPIONSHIP Kevin Kisner birdied the second extra hole to end a six-man playoff and capture a thrilling 2021 Wyndham Championship at Greensboro’s Sedgefield Country Club.

Known as a dogged match-play competitor, Kisner stiffed his approach shot on 18 and calmly rolled in a 3-foot putt. For the victory — the fourth of his career and first since 2019 — the former University of Georgia Bulldog banked $1,152,000.

Smalley enjoyed plenty of local support during the week. Along with his father and his mother, Maria — both of whom have caddied for Smalley throughout his career — his sister, Katie, and numerous friends and playing partners from Sedgefield followed his group and rooted him on.

“It was nice to hear their cheers out there,” Smalley said. “I don’t get to play in front of a whole lot of people very often. It’s pretty cool to have people scream at you after you make a putt. To have an opportunity to play a PGA Tour event on your home course is pretty special. I think it helped me out quite a bit. I know my way around. I’ve played out here numerous times, so I felt comfortable on the course. To have that finish was pretty cool.”

Adam Scott shot 65 in the final round to make the playoff. He had a chance for victory on the first playoff hole, but his 4-foot birdie putt never threatened the cup. Kisner and Scott were joined in the playoff by former champion Si Woo Kim, Braden Grace, Kevin Na and Roger Sloan.

It marked just the third time in PGA Tour history that six golfers have gone to a playoff.

Kisner began Sunday’s final round four shots behind leader Russell Henley, but he birdied Nos. 16 and 17, eventually shooting 66 to reach 15 under and the playoff.

“My first playoff win,” said Kisner, who was previously 0-5 in playoffs prior to his Wyndham title. “To be standing here is pretty sweet.”

Henley held the lead after the first three rounds. He recovered from a slow start on Sunday to reach 17-under after a birdie on the 10th hole, but the Georgia Bulldog bogeyed three of the next four holes and came to the 72nd hole needing par to stay at 15 under. He fell short of the playoff after narrowly missing a 5-foot par putt. It proved a brutal ending to what had been an otherwise amazing performance from Henley.

McConnell Golf member Alex Smalley didn’t quite play his way into the six-man playoff, but the former Duke University star gained plenty more along the way. Playing on his home course, Sedgefield CC, the 24-yearold Smalley carded three rounds in the 60s, including a sizzling 64 on Friday. He responded to the heat of Sunday’s final-round pressure in equally torrid fashion, finishing his day with three straight birdies and a 4under 66.

In just his fifth PGA Tour event, playing on a sponsor’s exemption in a fullfield event on the last weekend of the PGA Tour regular season, Smalley finished at 10-under par and tied for 29th.

A NOTE FROM YOUR CARDINAL SUPERINTENDENT

What an exciting Wyndham Championship we had this year! We had an amazing field this year and it was great to have the fans back to add to an electrifying and loud finish on Sunday. This was the first year out of my seven Wyndham Championships that the golf course has played how we wanted it to and all of our preparations leading up to the event paid off. In years past, we have gotten multiple days of rain during the week of the tournament. This year we got lucky and only received rain Saturday evening. This allowed for us to control the moisture in all the surfaces and the course played firmer and faster than in years past. We were very happy with how the course stood up to the world’s best golfers and the golfers were very appreciative of the conditions we provided them.

Fall is almost here and it is my favorite time of the year on and off the course. We have football starting back up, family time around the outdoor fire pit, and cooler weather to enjoy being on the golf course.

Not only is it more comfortable for us all to enjoy being outside and on the course, but it’s a welcome change for our bentgrass greens. The cooler weather allows us to provide a firmer and faster-putting surface without the worry of stress on our greens.

Currently, the turf throughout the property is doing very well as we head into the fall season. The tournament structures should be mostly gone by mid-September and we will begin repairing any damaged areas with new sod at that time. As we get closer to the end of September we will begin the process of raising our mowing heights and preparing them for the cooler weather ahead. This is a very vital part of our agronomic plan that allows the bermuda plants to be as healthy as possible before they go dormant. It also allows for some added leaf tissue so it can better sustain the cart and foot traffic during the winter while it’s not actively growing and able to recover.

Looking forward we will continue to perform our light topdressings on the greens through the month of September and on October 11 we will be using small needle tines on the greens to help ensure that the greens are going into winter as healthy as possible. This process causes very minimal disruption to the surface and the ball roll is typically back to normal a couple of days after the process.

As the end of summer is just around the corner, we welcome cooler crisp mornings that make for some great golfing weather! I hope to see you out on the course taking advantage of the weather and good golfing conditions.

I would like to make you aware of a few things that you may notice as we head into fall and start preparing the course for winter. As we get into September, we will start to raise the height of cut on tees, fairways, and green surrounds. This is done to make sure we have enough material on all surfaces to handle all of the winter traffic. Raising the height of cut on all short-cut areas also helps to insulate from cold temperatures in the winter which can help to prevent winter kill. Also, at the beginning of September, we will be putting out a fall fertility application on all short-cut and high traffic areas to ensure that these areas go into dormancy as healthy as possible.

As we head into fall and winter it is time for the agronomy team to start to shift our focus back to course improvement projects. In the summertime, we are busy just maintaining the course that there is little time for big projects. One thing that we will be doing this fall is a large drainage project on seven fairway, along with some sod work. Due to the continuous flooding, large amounts of silt have been deposited into the soil, making it very slow to drain and frim backup. Installing sub-surface drainage will allow this area to dry down and firm backup much faster after large rain events. Once we move into winter we will get back on lots of tree removal around the course.

SEPTEMBER GOLF EVENTS

It is hard to believe the summer golf season is starting to wind down. It doesn't feel as though we are in September and closer to the beginning of a new year. I guess it’s true what they say, as you get older, time seems to fly by faster. This summer at The Cardinal has been filled with all sorts of activities and events. From Night Golf, junior camps, junior tournaments, and Club Championship. Each event was filled with laughs, great competition, and by far a great course to host them all. I certainly hope each and every one of you has enjoyed the product Ross and his team have given us throughout the summer months. Let’s take a trip down memory lane to recap some of the highlights from the last couple of months.

29-30 WEDNESDAY-THURSDAY

Night golf was an event the team at the Cardinal had done in the past so the experience wasn’t something new. However, this year was a little different as we brought in a team from Golf Vibe Golf to set up the lights and course to create a truly memorable experience. With the course lit up from tee to green and glowing golf balls flying through the air, all you could hear across the course were screams, yells, and laughs. It was great to see all of the new faces at the club enjoying a new way to experience the game of golf.

Our Junior Golf program was on display in June and July at the Cardinal. With two major events on both the CGA and CPGA calendars, the Cardinal was ready for the test. Juniors from all parts of the Carolinas brought their A-game to compete on one of the hardest courses in the state. The competition was greatly highlighted by a 13year-old shooting -1 par and forcing a playoff against an 18-year-old.

Men’s and Ladies Club Championship was played the third week of July. The Ladies Division had a clear winner for the gross championship as Leigh Armentrout played some incredible golf. In the net division, two ladies battled to capture the title. On the 36th hole, Cindy Nuckols was able to squeeze out a 1 shot victory over Ellen Reddick to win the first championship of her career. Great playing Ladies! On the men’s side, the competition was fierce for both the Net and the Gross. Trailing by 3 shots going into the final round of the Net Division, Chris Stadler played 2 rounds of steady golf to take home the Net Trophy. The Gross Championship Division shaped up to a dogfight with players handicaps ranging from +3 to 4 across all flights. After 2 rounds of 68, Preston Dembowiak cruised to a 9 shot victory to claim his first Club Championship title. Congratulations to all our champions and we look forward to watching these titleholders defend in 2022.

Anna has always prioritized an active, healthy, and balanced lifestyle. As a former collegiate athlete, she has very much enjoyed being active and has participated in a wide variety of sports and exercise events. Her desire to help others achieve their wellness goals has led her to change careers from restaurant management to yoga teacher and fitness trainer.

She is a certified lifeguard and RYT 200 yoga teacher trained in multiple areas ranging from stand-up paddleboard yoga to prenatal yoga. Her experience also encompasses HIIT, step and water aerobics, Pilates and weight training. Anna is currently working on her aerial yoga certification and therapeutic massage bodywork license. She is excited for the opportunity to lead you through challenging and fun workouts incorporating mindfulness leaving you feeling energized and more relaxed throughout your day.

COOKIES OF THE MONTH SEPTEMBER: PB&J CRUMBLE COOKIES

OCTOBER: CHOCOLATE PRETZEL OATMEAL COOKIES

This cookie comes from one of the first kitchens I ever worked in. The Chef there got a new bread maker and we tried out a couple of bread recipes. He found a peanut butter and jelly bread that turned out amazing. We put it on the menu after I made a grilled PB&J on the bread for lunch one day.

The kids loved it and from there we tried just about every PB&J recipe we could. This cookie is one that stood out and was well-liked.

Ingredients: Cooking spray or butter, for coating the pan 2 Cups All-Purpose Flour ½ TSP Baking Powder ½ TSP Fine Salt 12 TBSP Unsalted Butter, room temperature 1 1/3 Cups Granulated Sugar

1 1/3 Cups Natural Creamy Peanut Butter (no sugar added), at room temperature 1 Large Egg 1TSP Vanilla Extract 1 1/2 Cups Concord Grape Jelly, at room temperature 2/3 Cup Coarsely Chopped Salted, Roasted Peanuts(Optional)

Directions: Arrange a rack in the middle of a convection oven and heat to 325°F on low fan. Line the sides and bottom of a half hotel pan with aluminum foil, then coat the foil with cooking spray or butter; set aside. Whisk the flour, baking powder, and salt together in a medium bowl; set aside. Place the butter and sugar in the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment. Beat on low speed until combined, then increase the speed to medium-high and beat until creamed. Stop the mixer and scrape down the sides and paddle with a rubber spatula. Add the peanut butter and beat on medium-high speed until combined. Add the egg and vanilla and continue to beat until completely combined. Stop the mixer and scrape down again.

Return the mixer to low speed and gradually add the flour mixture, stopping when the flour is almost incorporated (do not overmix).

Remove the bowl from the mixer and fold in the remaining flour by hand with the rubber spatula. Sprinkle 1/2 of the mixture in the baking pan and press into an even layer. Bake until the top is light golden-brown, 15 to 20 minutes. Dollop the jelly over the crust and spread it into an even layer as best as you can without disturbing the crust. (Don’t worry if the jelly doesn't spread much, it will melt in the oven.) Sprinkle evenly with the chopped peanuts, if using. Using your hands, crumble the remaining dough into pieces about the size of almonds and sprinkle evenly into the pan. Return the pan to the oven and bake until the top is golden-brown, about 20 minutes more. Remove the pan to a wire rack and let cool completely. To serve, grasp the foil in the middle of the pan and lift the bar cookie slab out of the pan and onto a cutting board. Cut into bars.

Two years ago around Christmas time, I had a cookie very similar to this at a holiday party I attended with my sister's family in Nashville. It was so good that I had to try to recreate it. I started with my grandmother's Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookie recipe, made a few changes and this is the result. My favorite cookie year-round is an Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookie and adding the Pretzel and Flaky Sea Salt element just adds another layer of goodness to it. Fresh out of the oven with a glass of milk and you could easily eat the whole plate!

Ingredients: 1 Cup Salted Butter 3/4 Cup Brown Sugar 1/4 Cup Granulated Sugar 2 Eggs, Whole 1 TBSP Vanilla Extract 1 ¾ Cup and 2 TBSP All-Purpose Flour 1 TSP Baking Soda

1/2 TSP Cinnamon 1/2 TSP Kosher Salt 1 ½Cup Old Fashioned Oats 2 ½Cups Semi Sweet Chocolate Chips 1 Cup Mini Pretzels, crushed ¼ Cup Flaky Sea Salt (for sprinkling)

Directions: Cream together butter and sugars until combined. Continue mixing, adding one egg at a time until combined. Add vanilla and continue mixing until creamy. In a separate bowl add flour, cinnamon, baking soda, and kosher salt. Slowly add flour mixture to egg-sugar mixture while mixing at low speed. Add 1/4 of the mixture at a time, scraping downsides making sure to fully incorporate the flour mixture. After the flour mixture is all combined, add oats and chocolate chips folding them in by hand. Roll dough into 2 Tablespoon size balls.

Gently push a few crushed pretzels into each ball and flatten with the palm of the hand to 1/2 inch thickness. Bake in the oven at 350°F for 9 to 11 minutes. While cookies are cooling sprinkle with flaky sea salt.
