The upcoming season is magical at both Sedgefield and The Cardinal, and we have an exciting lineup of events and activities planned to make this truly the most of this wonderful time of year.

A NOTE FROM YOUR TRIAD MEMBERSHIP DIRECTOR

Mike and Jynné Harris Please join us in welcoming the Harris family as our newest members! Mike and Jynné reside in Greensboro where he is the President of Hooker Casegoods & Upholstery and she is the VP of Client Solutions at Kreber. They know many current members at Sedgefield and were referred to join by both Ed & Allison Boiar and John & Ana Atwater. The Harris’ have three adult children (Alyssa Acord, Evan Harris & Nicholas Rich) as well as two French Bulldogs, Lucy & Misty. They love to travel to new places, enjoy good wine, and spending time with friends & family. Further, Mike enjoys yoga and playing guitar while Jynné enjoys golf and is also a yoga instructor at Radiance Yoga in Greensboro. We welcome the Harris’ to the Sedgefield family!

It seems like only a couple of months ago when March was roaring “in like a lion” and then back out “like a lamb” – yet here we are in November preparing to celebrate the holidays and usher in a new year. Although our membership growth has slowed a bit, as of this writing in late October we are net positive 20 members at Sedgefield for 2023. I was jokingly asked at this fall’s Sedgefield Cup by a member if I was still employed. I took it as a compliment that the club and membership are growing! I continue to receive referrals from our members weekly. These are my favorite way to add new prospective members as the most successful clubs grow from within. Those clubs where the members want their friends to also be members are the best places to be in my opinion. As always, I am happy to help arrange a visit for any of your friends, neighbors or colleagues to Sedgefield or any other McConnell Golf property for that matter. All of our clubs have something unique and special to offer, creating an unparalleled membership value. Membership within McConnell Golf truly is The Best Private Club Value from the Mountains to the Coast. Wow, it is already the last newsletter of the year! You know what they say though, time flies when you’re having fun! As we step into the last two months of the year, we will start to see all of the holiday parties and festivities begin! I love the colder weather and am excited to see what this Winter will bring us…Hopefully a little bit of snow!

How quickly we have dived into the holiday season! With Thanksgiving right around the corner and then the shopping sprees to fill the empty spaces under our trees, it's a bit of an adrenaline rush as we head in to the season. But don't worry, you've still got time to signup for one of our many exciting holiday events or plan one of your own! Booking or attending a holiday party at the Club is the perfect way to create lasting memories for you and your guests. Elegantly decorated for the holiday season, our clubs offers a luxurious and festive atmosphere that's sure to enhance the holiday spirit. KIDS AND FAMILY A NOTE FROM YOUR MEMBER ACTIVITIES DIRECTOR It's the most wonderful time of the year and my favorite! Between the delicious food, visits from Santa, and family time, there is so much joy the holiday season brings. Be sure to join us for Kids Club each Friday evening as we have many fun holiday activities planned. From making crafts and decorating our Kids Club Christmas Tree to taking a trip to Whoville and ringing in the New Year, you won't want to miss it! You will see some new faces that have joined the Activity Team, so help me welcome Lyndsey and Maddie to the team! Each of us on the Activities Team looks forward to spending the holiday season with you and all the fun that it brings!

A NOTE FROM YOUR CARDINAL SUPERINTENDENT

Cooler weather paid us a visit a little earlier this year than we are normally accustomed to. We experienced our first frost this season on October 9 as we recorded a low temperature of 37 degrees that morning. It was a very light patchy frost that was only present in the rough. Much of the turf on the course has began to lose its green color and this will become more significant once we have some colder mornings that produce a heavier frost. As we approach the winter months with colder mornings, this is the time of year that when frosty conditions are present we will enforce a delayed start for play to protect the health of the plants. Please check with the golf shop on these cold mornings to stay updated with possible frost delays.

I hope you have been able to come out and enjoy the course this fall. We have had great weather so far and have been able to provide good course conditions for you to enjoy. I am hoping that this great weather continues into the winter as we have a few projects I am looking forward to completing.

This is the time of year we refer to as “leaf season” and our main focus will be to keep the course clean from leaves using large blowers and vacuums. Some days are easier than others at keeping the course clean depending on how windy it is, so please be understanding that some days the course may not be as clean as our typical standards. We are also approaching the time of year that the turf on the greens will shut down and cease growing for the year. It will not grow and recover from old hole locations like it does when it’s actively growing. Therefore we will start to use white plastic inserts inside the cups where we typically use white paint. These plastic inserts help to protect the edge of the cup from any damage and on days when rounds of golf are minimal, we will use the same hole locations the next day. Using this method through-out the winter months will minimize the amount of old cup marks while the turf isn’t growing and healing itself. Once the turf begins actively growing again next year, we will convert back to using paint. This is still a great time of year to get out and enjoy some good conditions and nice golfing weather before we really get into the much colder weather in January and February. Get out and have some fun and I hope to see you out on the course.

We all know that last winter was not kind to us and the course received a significant amount of winter damage. Most, if not all, of the damage occurred due to high shade in already wet areas. Our main focus, once we get into winter, will be to improve the growing environment in these areas. We plan to remove a few trees to help get more sunlight into these areas. In addition to tree removal, we will be adding some drainage to a few areas to help them dry down faster after rains. As we look forward to the coming months, one thing we will focus on is keeping the course as clean as possible on a daily basis. Leaves are already starting to fall at a very fast pace, which we are able to clean up quickly when it’s dry. However, when we go through wet stretches, it can be difficult to get our equipment onto the course for daily leaf removal. Please be patient with us as we will be working hard every day to keep the course clean, but also minimize any damage to the turf from our equipment. I am looking forward to starting these projects this winter and setting us up for an even better 2024 golf season. Hopefully there are many warm sunny days this winter for us to get lots of work done and for you to be able come out and enjoy the club. Ross Jernigan

TEE IT UP AT SEDGEFIELD A NOTE FROM YOUR DIRECTOR OF GOLF Dear Members, What an incredible year 2023 has been. I personally would like to thank each of you for your continued support of our team here at Sedgefield. The biggest takeaway for 2023 for us was WEATHER. It felt like every member event we tried to host was impacted in some way due to weather. Eventually Mother Nature cooperated and we had some fantastic events highlighted by our Ladies Member Guest and Men’s Fall Member Guest. As we look ahead into 2024 we hope that you will clear your calendars and plan to spend more time with us here at the club. Our staff is already hard at work preparing for next year in hopes to bring you some new and exciting events. As we say goodbye to 2023, we hope that you have enjoyed the year and look forward to many great things to come! Eric Ferguson, PGA

KEEP WARM ON THE GOLF COURSE THIS WINTER Winter Golf in North Carolina can have its fair share of surprises. Sometimes you will have to find some sort of compromise between comfort and functionality. Check out these winter golf tips to help find your solution! Winter Golf Gear Keeping warm on the golf course does not require you to break the bank, but it does help to invest some money in quality gear. Wear an extra pair of socks because you lose most of your heat through your extremities. Make sure you have a golf jacket and a snug fitting golf cap, as well. Don’t forget a pair of hand warmers to keep your hands warm to ensure your swing stays consistent.

FROST DELAYS EXPLAINED Every year in late fall golfers inevitably rush to the courses to get in their last few rounds of the year, only to end up sitting in the clubhouse waiting out a lengthy frost delay. Discouraging as it is to see your day slip away as you wait for the thaw, few golfers realize how important frost delays are for protecting their beloved golf courses from damage. With that said, let us take a moment to delve into what a frost delay is really all about and why greens keepers are so adamant about preventing play in these frost-bitten conditions. Frost is nothing more than frozen dew that crystallizes on the grass. Being composed of 90% water, a grass blade freezes very easily, thereby making the normally pliable grass rigid and inflexible. Once frozen just the simple act of walking on a frosted course will cause the grass plant to break and rupture cell walls. The problem lies in that once the membrane is ruptured; future re-growth of the grass blade is significantly hindered. Golf course grass, mowed shortest on fairways and greens and therefore less robust than longer patches, is naturally most susceptible to breakage. If a frost delay is ignored, immediate damage is not seen. About 48-72 hours after membrane breakage has occurred the grass will turn brown and die. The destruction of the grass, especially on the putting surface, opens the door for the growth of weeds and disease, thus compounding the issue and further devolving the overall condition of the course. For obvious reasons, golf courses dislike delaying play as much as the golfers that are waiting, but simply put, it will cost a golf club significantly more to replace damaged grass than to administer a short delay while allowing nature to take its course. Take a look at some of the local county courses in your area that are in awful shape. This is most likely caused by ignoring frost, riding carts on wet fairways, and not filling in divots from shots. Next time the temperatures drop into the freezing range, do yourself a favor and call the pro shop to ask if there is a delay before heading out for your early tee time. This extra step will save you time and keep you from sitting inside the clubhouse waiting a couple of hours. Even use of the practice facilities (putting green, practice tee, and short game area) is disallowed during a frost delay, so stay home, have an extra cup of coffee, and head over to the course for a later round when the sun has had a chance to warm the grass up a bit.

Use Softer Balls Striking a cold, hard golf ball will feel like hitting a steel poll with a baseball bat. This winter golf tip will not only save you from hurting your hands, but will also improve your distance and control when you play during the colder months. Walk Before you go on the course, do some stretches and light exercise to get the blood flowing. Consider walking or taking a 4-bagger to keep your blood flowing. Also in the Winter, the wind is usually not in your favor. Walking not only keeps winds off of you, but it also keeps you warmer since you are moving around more frequently.

What a couple of months September and October have been. These months are always fun because the course bounces back from our last big maintenance project of the year, a number of championships are held, we get to watch a bunch of exciting golf and our PGA Junior League Team has kicked butt and took a few names along the way. Let’s take a minute to reflect on all that has occurred so far: · Our season long Wednesday Night Men’s League finished up in mid September with our Shootout. After 9 holes and a couple chip off wins, Dr. Tony Nottage claimed the belt and the title as Men’s League Champion. · The Black team continues its dominance in the Cardinal Cup Team Match play event. With an 8.5 to 7.5 win this year, the Black team is on a 2 year winning streak.

· The Ladies “Rockin Down the Fairway” Invitational was a rocking good time. We hosted ladies from around the state, and Virginia, along with multiple McConnell Golf Properties. The women enjoyed a bit of trivia during their welcome reception on Wednesday night. The team of Golf N’ Roses seemed to know all the right notes during trivia to take home the prize. On Thursday, the teams jammed out and showed off their true rocker personalities. Our Gross Champions were the Freebirdies, Sandy Jessee, Julie Streng, Cindy Nuckols, and Ann Weiland. The Net Champs were Nancy Patefield, Judy Shepard, Trish Thompson, Carolyn Clayton formerly known at The Kiss Chicks.

· Our first ever Junior Club Championship was contested in late September this year. We had a tremendous field with numerous juniors from our Ops36 program and PGA Junior League participate. It is great to see how our junior program has grown to allow us to have such a great event for the junior players here at The Cardinal. TEE IT UP AT THE CARDINAL · Finally, the Cardinal hosted its first official Men’s Member-Guest Tournament in over 10 years. We have been building this event for a few years now and with the support and trust of our growing membership, we were able to deliver an unbelievable weekend of golf and food for those who participated. Would like to thank every single one of the members who came out and enjoyed the weekend. Was a ton of great golf and maybe a little bit of bad golf, but in the end I feel this weekend was a huge success and we look forward to seeing the event grow. Let’s take a quick minute to congratulate our 2023 Champions, Member Jeff Fuller and his Guest Kevin Mason. With fall and winter looking at us straight between the eyes, the golf course goes through a bit of a change. The Bermuda grass goes dormant, areas around the course tend to stay a bit wetter than normal and playing conditions are a little tougher. I wanted to give you a couple pieces of advice for playing when the ground is wet and the grass is less than ideal. 1. When around the green and chipping (lower shots), make sure you are using a less lofted club. These clubs will allow to you make ball first contact much easier. You may also want to practice a bit with your hybrid or fairway wood. The flatter bottom of these clubs will not dig into the wet ground. 2. If pitching (high shot) the ball is necessary, make sure you are using the bounce on the sole of the club. The bounce is used to keep the club from digging. Open the face more, but also remember to hit down on the ball. The open face will expose more of the sole to the ground and help you keep the leading edge from digging.

3. During these months, rollout is not going to occur on your tee shot as it might during the summer times. This is why you should make an effort to hit the ball high and let it fly. Work on creating a more positive angle of attack with your driver so the ball will stay in the air longer. Usually the longer the ball is in the air the further it will fly. If you need help with any of these areas of your game, please contact a member of the professional staff. We are more than happy to help.

STAY GOLF FIT IN THE WINTER MONTHS As golf season winds down the following tips will help you be golf ready in the spring. 1. Watch Your Weight: The average golfer can gain from 5-10 pounds during the off-season. This can raise your score. Extra weight (fat) will prevent your hips from rotating as quickly, causing a loss of power and more ineffective swing. 2. Body Control: Improve body control for better golf shots. Stand on an old pillow with either foot, while keeping the other foot off the floor. Raise your knee to belt/hip height – hold as long as possible. Once you lose your balance, switch to the other leg. 3. Stay Loose: The less flexible you are the shorter and less effective your swing becomes. Try to stretch your hips every day. 4. Cardio Is for Golfers Too! About 20-30 minutes of cardio three times per week is optimal for a healthy heart and stronger game. 5. Focus! Keep Your Mind Active: The off-season is a great time to develop mental performance skills. Watch golf improvement/skill videos or have your swing video- taped. 6. Strength Training: Increase swing speed by strengthening. Develop hip strength. Stability and core are a must for the golfer. The stronger and more stable your core, you are less likely to develop low back pain. A strong, healthy golfer stays on the course!
