CLUB UPDATE A NOTE FROM YOUR TRIAD REGIONAL DIRECTOR

CONGRATULATIONS VANESSA LOWDER

A few months ago, I'm not sure I could have imagined the magnitude of the public health crisis we are currently facing any more than I could have imagined the impact it is having on every industry and every single aspect of our lives. The creativity and resiliency I have witnessed by the team at our clubs is nothing short of astounding and the support of our members continues to inspire us all. In the early stages, as we reacted to daily (and sometimes hourly) changes in guidance, I never once heard any staff member think about giving up. Instead, their entire mindset was how to continue providing services to our members as we faced gathering restrictions, operational closures, and reductions in our work force, and moreover, how to do this while keeping our members and staff safe and healthy. This group found new ways of doing things when it seemed there was no other way and the call continues to be answered as we work toward a phased reopening knowing the way we operate has forever changed. The positive spirit and camaraderie amongst the staff has made me more proud and grateful than ever and I would like to publicly offer my sincere appreciation to the entire team.

It is also important to acknowledge and thank you, our valued members, for your support. Many of you have written notes and sent emails expressing your appreciation of the staff's efforts and you have no idea how much that means to the team. It would be easy for you to become frustrated with the limitations and closures we have had to administer. But that's not the nature of our members. You have been vocal with your appreciation, cooperative when we've had to remind you of restrictions, and generous with your support of modified programming, services, and hours of operation. On behalf of the entire team, we want you to know how much we sincerely appreciate you. As I said earlier, your support is a tremendous source of inspiration and it warms my heart to watch the staff react by trying even harder to find new ways to impress and serve you.

Within the General Federation of Women's Clubs (GFWC), an Honorary Lifetime Membership is one of the highest awards an individual can receive. Longtime Greensboro Woman's Club and Sedgefield Country Club member Vanessa Lowder, received this distinguished and very well-deserved honor in April. Vanessa is pictured above with husband Warren this past June on their 44th anniversary.

As we move into the days, weeks, and months ahead, life will continue to present challenges. We are hard at work on phased reopening plans and there's one certainty with this process. We will once again find ourselves in a position of adapting regularly to situations that arise. While we will try to be as prepared as possible, we know there will be times when we will have to drop back and punt. As we reopen fitness and dining venues along with the pool and hopefully summer camps and activities, gathering and social distancing restrictions will make these operations very different than the past. We ask for your patience and understanding as we introduce new ways for you to enjoy your experience with these very important amenities and programs.

If I can be of assistance to you in any way, please let me know. I look forward to seeing you around the club!

A NOTE FROM YOUR TRIAD MEMBERSHIP DIRECTOR

WELCOME NEW MEMBERS

I began working in the private club industry as a senior in college at NC State in Raleigh – it was just after Labor Day, and a few days prior to September 11, 2001. While I was very new to the private club industry, after 9/11, it was very evident that things were not operating as normal. While things gradually returned to what I would refer to as a “new normal,” it was obvious the events of the time had a major impact on everyone and how things would be done differently moving forward.

Caleb Connerty and Leah Caffey Caleb and Leah have recently joined Sedgefield and are looking forward to playing lots of golf and meeting new friends. Caleb is the Operations Manager for Cogent Analytics in Greensboro while Leah is the Assistant General Manager at Caffey Distributing. Please join us in welcoming them to Sedgefield and the McConnell Golf family of clubs!

Fast-forward almost two decades later, and here we are again with another national crisis, and eventually we will return to our regular lives with another “new” normal. This new normal will include all of the things we love to do now, we may just have to do them differently for a little while until a vaccine and cure are found for COVID-19. As our society has seen many of these similar pandemics before, our scientists and doctors are already working toward a solution that will enable us to gather in groups once again.

The great thing about golf is that it can be enjoyed with thousands of others (see The Wyndham for example), or in solitary. We are fortunate that we have been able to remain open while many businesses have closed. As my wife is in health care and must report to work, I have spent most of my time working at home over the past few weeks, with our two sons. While I have not had an opportunity to play golf during this time, there are some other things I have been able to do outside of the home for a break, such as taking a walk, fishing in our neighborhood pond, or even just spending time outside grilling with the radio on.

The fact is, these breaks from our current routines are extremely important for our physical and mental health.

We are proud of the fact that we are able to provide a distraction for our members as they navigate these unchartered waters, and look forward to more mass gatherings and events when allowed.

While we are not experiencing the surge in springtime memberships that we usually have, the interest is certainly there and we are actively accepting new members at the moment. If you have a friend, neighbor or colleague that you feel could use a break from the monotony of the current situation, please send them our way. We would love to discuss membership options with them so they can make an informed decision regarding membership when the time is right for them.

So for now, enjoy your time with family and we look forward to seeing all of you together again very soon!

Zachary and Katey Griffith Zack is an avid golfer and has played in a few CGA events over the past couple of years since relocating here from Ohio. He is looking forward to playing lots of golf at the club while they both are looking forward to enjoying everything the club has to offer. Zack is the Finance Director for Flow Lexus in Winston-Salem, while Katey is finishing up with her Masters Degree to become a Nurse Anesthetist. Please join us in welcoming the Griffiths to Sedgefield!

Chuck and Tina Graham Daughters Abigail and Allyson The Graham family recently relocated to Greensboro from Orlando, Florida. Mr. Graham is the Regional Vice-President of the Mid-South region for Old Dominion Freight Lines, where he originally heard about Sedgefield from many others, including David Bates, Chris Brooks and Barry Craver. Born and raised in Butler, Pennsylvania, Mr. Graham made his way south where he played baseball and football at UCF, and also met his wife Tina. In his spare time, besides playing golf, Mr. Graham enjoys watching sports and spending time with his daughters Abigail (26) and Allyson (23). Please join us in welcoming the Graham family to Sedgefield!

Christopher Schultz Born and raised in Bethesda, Maryland just outside of Washington, D.C., Chris played college football at Bryant University in Smithfield, Rhode Island and returned back to the D.C. area after graduation. He began working in sales for CoStar Group, a commercial real estate analytics and marketing company, where he spent two and a half years

at their headquarters in D.C. He recently relocated to downtown Greensboro to run the sales and service efforts for CoStar Group in the Triad. Chris is an avid golfer and was drawn to Sedgefield due to its great reputation and having watched the Wyndham Champtionship over the years. He was also very drawn to the ability to travel and play other courses in the McConnell network. He played a little golf growing up but really took to the game post college. "I try to stick to my philosophy of 'make every trip a golf trip' as I try to find a memorable place to play on every trip I take," says Chris. He also enjoys following his favorite D.C. sports teams and spending time by the water. "I am excited to be here in the Triad and look forward to meeting more of the members and having some fun on the course!"

Matthew and Leslie Thompson The Thompsons recently relocated to Kernersville from Atlanta, GA. They both grew up in Tennessee but have lived in Atlanta for the past 10 years. They got married last year and are excited to be joining their first country club together. Matthew is a passionate golfer while Leslie has only recently started playing. The Thompsons enjoy spending time with their miniature beagle, traveling, and

watching sports (Go Braves, Georgia Tech, & Vols). Matthew is in the natural gas industry and Leslie is in finance. They are really looking forward to spending time at the country club. When they saw all of the social activity during their tour they knew this was the club for them. Please join us in welcoming them!

CLUBHOUSE NEWS A NOTE FROM YOUR DIRECTOR OF SALES AND CATERING Finally, a chance to get outdoors and enjoy some warmer weather! I love to see how the snow transforms the landscape in the midst of winter, but I sure do hate the cold. Summer, that’s where it’s at!

Enjoying weekends at the lake or a trip to the beach, the warmer weather seems to bring everyone out for some much needed fresh air and vitamin D. The long summer days full of bright sun provide us with a chance to squeeze just a bit more time out of each day. I love getting home from work and still having a bit of daylight left to enjoy a quick walk or sip a glass of wine on the patio. I’m sure by now, everyone’s plans or lifestyle has been somehow affected by the Covid-19 virus. As we continue to get back to our normal activities don’t forget your club is still here. All those plans you had to change, events, holidays and family gatherings canceled; don’t worry we can still host them. We are here for you! As we simply wait to venture out again, we are still at the club working hard to plan those special functions. We might not know exactly when we’ll be back to celebrating together again, but rest assured we’ll be ready to get the party started!

Until we get back to normal, it's great to see everyone taking advantage of the simple things in life. Enjoying walks in the summer

sun, relaxing on the patio with a good book or spending some quality time catching up with loved ones, it’s invigorating. It won’t be long, until we are back to that crazy busy “party” life we all know. Till then, relax and enjoy this summer season! A NOTE FROM YOUR DIRECTOR OF FOOD AND BEVERAGE What a year it has been so far! It’s fair to say we’ve all had to get used to the new norm and adapt to the changes around us. Adjusting to new conditions can certainly be challenging especially when life is so unpredictable. So, what does this mean? The answer is simple… we ought to make the BEST of it! Whether it be taking the extra time to relax, finally cleaning out that closet or simply reconnecting with family and friends, take advantage of the situation. As our daily routines shift, staying positive is a core ingredient for creating moments of happiness!

Some other ingredients may include lobsters, dry aged ribeyes and quite a bit of wine! Be sure to keep an eye out on the weekly specials – you never know what’s cooking in Sedgefield’s kitchen. While I cannot predict the future, I am certain about one thing. I foresee a lot of exercise in my daily routine! And for once, I am okay with that – with the summer season around the corner, I love spending hours outside. From sunrise to sunset, we long to be in the fresh air, enjoying the precious sunshine and warmth.

Let’s make the most of the season and savor every moment! And remember… Wine a lot, Laugh a lot!

Once we are able to open the pool for the summer season, the planned hours of operation are as follows. Please note these hours are subject to change based on forthcoming guidance from state and local officials.

We are patiently awaiting guidance from state and local officials regarding summer camp programming and subsequently the Greensboro Community Swim Association (CSA) as to whether they will proceed with the 2020 swim season. Even if the CSA is unable to conduct their summer season, Sedgefield will hold a summer swim program at the club to the extent that we are allowed under the guidance that is forthcoming. STRONGER TOGETHER

In addition to the PGA TOUR’s schedule modifications, the Korn Ferry Tour recently announced the cancellation of the REX Hospital Open which was originally scheduled for May 25-31. The Country Club at Wakefield Plantation looks forward to hosting the event again in May 2021! The Visit Knoxville Open, hosted by Holston Hills Country Club, is postponed with a date yet to be determined.

A NOTE FROM YOUR CARDINAL SUPERINTENDENT

Spring time is finally here and with that comes the true start of our golfing season here in the Carolinas. The temperatures this past winter were overall pretty mild and this has lead us to a golf course that is greening up in places that we normally see winter damage every year. These are all very good things as our focus this year will not require any repair work and we can utilize our time maintaining the course and working on a few projects starting very soon.

Spring is finally here and it jumped on us in a hurry! The milder winter brought us many days of rain and sloppy playing conditions but it also helped our Bermuda avoid extensive injury. Over the past few years here we have seen what a prolonged cold winter can do to our turf. With the early arrival of warmer temperatures the turf is thriving and also about three to four weeks ahead of schedule. This has kept us on our toes because it isn’t just the turf that is early. The trees, bugs, and weeds also decided to wake up early and start the season. But if we had a choice, an early spring is always the best.

The new short game project will be underway by the time you are reading this and we are super excited about this new improvement. The project of the range tee expansion has been put on hold for this year as we iron out some more details to best utilize that space. During the month of May we will also begin building the new additional tee box on 14. We will be aerifying greens, tees, and fairways May 4-11 this year. Considering that the turf made it through the winter well and is healthy, this will allow for us to heal from this process in a timely manner and be back to great golfing conditions in just a few short weeks. Please keep in mind that warmer weather means we will also begin our normal agronomic practices of verti-grooming the greens and lightly sanding them with ultra-fine sand every Monday during our growing season. This process is very minimal in disruption but is a vital part to us being able to provide you with the best possible greens surfaces week in and week out during the season.

We all have experienced some very challenging times the past several months with the COVID-19 virus. This has impacted our department in many ways and how we have had to deviate from our normal operating procedures. The most impactful was splitting the staff into 2 groups. This is for staff safety and the event if one staff member gets the virus we don’t all have to self-quarantine leaving no one to maintain the property for at least 2 weeks. Group A and Group B never see each other and everything at our facility is sanitized between shifts so nothing spreads between the 2 groups.

I say all this because as we have had to change into these drastic measures to insure employee safety, it will have an impact on some detail things that were normally kept up to our high standards. The overall big picture will still remain the same and you will not notice any difference, but please bear with us on small detail items as we all get through these unprecedented times together and stay safe and healthy.

These early weeks in spring allow us to get out and mow the short cut turf (tees, fairways, and surrounds) very low. By mowing low we remove the excess dormant tissue on the Bermuda and allow more sunlight and heat to reach the soil. The turf responds to soil temperature and sunlight intensity. Once the days start to get longer the turf grows more vigorously with every passing day until the summer solstice which is June 21st, the longest day of the year. We typically apply a spring fertilizer this time of year as well but are holding off with the uncertainty of what the future holds.

Once we get “back to normal” we will fertilize the turf and really get it growing. There are a few areas on the course that will need some fertilization more so than others, like tees, so they can heal from divots or weak areas that just need a little push. We will address those areas as needed.

Overall I am happy with how the course handled the wet winter and the early spring. We were very lucky to dodge all of the hurricanes last year and the turf is waking up healthy. It is nice to focus on the course details instead of cleaning up after Mother Nature for a change. It is a treat to see all of the play that we have had over the last few weeks. I know the quarantine and social distancing has been tough on all of us but at least we have had an outlet by way of golf.

If we all do our part, hopefully we can continue to play and enjoy the game we love without disruption. Stay safe and thank you all for your support of our agronomic team. We look forward to a great golfing season ahead!

A NOTE FROM YOUR HEAD GOLF PROFESSIONAL I’m sure you are thankful that the grass is finally growing in around the greens.

Having a little turf to interact with makes chipping so much easier. In a previous article I talked about how to setup, posture, position of the weight, and how to swing the club. I thought it would be a good time to talk about how to improve on those fundamentals and work on getting the ball closer to the hole. A few things come to mind when learning to chip the ball closer to the holes: 1. How far away you are from the green. If you have an obstacle (bunker or rough), I recommend using a more lofted club. You’ll need the loft to “carry” the obstacle in the front of you. Remember when using a more lofted club, your swing will need to bigger both on the backswing and on the follow-through. Speed is needed to create loft to get over the danger in front of you, and speed is needed to create the spin to get the ball to stop closer to the hole.

2. If you are just off the green, but the pin is on the other side creating a long chip shot, try using the old tried and true “Bump and Run.” With a low lofted club (7 or 8 iron), use the chipping motion we talked about previously and make a small backswing and follow-through. Use good rhythm and tempo to just get the ball on the ground and rolling towards the hole. This does take a bit of practice and patience to execute effectively. Read the green like a putt and chip the ball on that line.

3. Pick a spot onto which you want the ball to land onto the green. Not all of us can hit the nifty little chip that stops on a dime. Expect the ball to roll out a little, especially with the “bump and run”. Use the intermediate target to help break up the distance between you and the hole. How far does the ball need to fly then how far does it need to roll.

4. How about those times when your ball is just off the green and the pin is fairly close to you. I tell students you have two options: Putt it or “bump and run” with a more lofted club. Putting will also be your safest play. You definitely have more control of the speed and line with the putter. However, if the rough or fringe is a little thick use the lofted club. Remember you aren’t trying to kill it from here. Make sure you keep the shaft leaning forward and the club head moving. The problem I say with members who do this is they setup with the shaft too upright and decelerate on the downswing. Both of these will lead to a skulled shot because the leading edge is hitting the ball or a fat shot because the leading edge digs in early. It might be a small motion but the club has to keep moving. Try these different approaches to your short game and hopefully you will begin to feel more comfortable choosing the right club for the job. I’ll leave you with one last thought, “always putt, if you can’t putt chip, and if you can’t chip pitch”. Remember a ball on the ground will stop faster than a ball traveling in the air.

FITNESS NEWS PERSONAL TRAINERS TURNED "PROFESSIONAL" PAINTERS

A NOTE FROM YOUR FITNESS DIRECTOR In the past few weeks we have all experienced Life Interrupted. Our normal routines drastically changed. Now more than ever, it is important that we try to find opportunities when encountering what can seem like daily obstacles. It may be as simple as using the extra time you now have since you are not commuting to and from work as an opportunity to get an extra walk in each day. To avoid frequent trips to the grocery store, use this as an opportunity to plan meals for a week at a time.

Buy fresh produce and get creative.

Closing the fitness center on March 23, due to the Executive Order issued by Governor Roy Cooper forced all of the McConnell fitness staff to think of ways to stay connected and offer creative workout opportunities to keep our members moving at home. McConnell Golf Facebook fitness videos offer daily workout videos and tips from various trainers and instructors from all of our McConnell properties. Our hope is this will offer a variety of workout routines to keep you moving even when you're away from the fitness center.

We took advantage of the gym closing and put a fresh coat of paint on the walls. It is amazing what that will do for a room! Needless to say, we are ready to see you all back in the gym so we can get back to personal training instead of painting!

TENNIS TIPS You can still practice your tennis game at home, in your garage, or your backyard. You don’t even need a court. This drill will help improve volley technique and hand-eye coordination. If this drill is practiced consistently, it increases reflexes quite noticeably.

VOLLEY-TO-VOLLEY DRILL

This is perhaps my all-time favorite drill. It improves your volleys and reflexes like no other drill. You’ll need two people, each with a racket, and one tennis ball. Unless you have a huge indoor space, you’ll want to do this drill outside. Doing it on smooth pavement is the easiest. Make sure to use the continental grip.

1. Stand about 15-18 feet apart, facing each other.

2. Volley the ball to each other. Try to take the ball out of the air. If the ball hits the ground just half volley it and continue on.

3. As you both build up feel, you can increase the pace or hit different spots. For example, do forehand volley to forehand volley. Or try going backhand-to-backhand.

4. Try to keep the ball going as long as possible. If you get to the point of being super-advanced with this drill, you can alternate moving side-toside while volleying.

TENNIS CAMP June 8-12: Ages 9-12 August 17-21: Ages 18 and under $179 PER CAMPER

During the week of the camps each Junior will experience: proper tennis etiquette, sportsmanship, scoring, fun match play including singles and doubles, tennis games, foot drills, cardio, proper stretching techniques, off-court fitness, leadership skills, how to become a better teammate, how to maximize his or her potential during a tennis match, and learn every tennis stroke like forehands, backhands, volleys, and serving. Our most important goal for camp is to have each Junior learn tennis in an atmosphere of fun while being challenged in a safe environment.
