Growing up in South Carolina, the transition of spring into summer was one of my favorite times of the year It meant school was almost out, pools were open, and the cool summer evenings playing outside until 9 p m were just getting started
As a ‘90s kid, there was nothing better than playing ball outside with your friends all day and then coming inside in the late afternoon to grab a Yoo-Hoo or a Capri Sun (Pacific Cooler, of course) And no matter whose house I ended up at, it always felt like I belonged. My friends’ parents would open their homes to all of us sweaty kids and treat us like one of their own It created a sense of belonging that has stayed with me ever since.
That feeling of being completely at home back then has been hard to replicate as an adult The closest I’ve found is in the soft fade of a summer evening.
Our team here at Sedgefield Country Club is striving to help you and your families enjoy the cool, crisp Carolina nights that lie ahead this spring and summer The Greenside Café is back open and in full swing, with Live After Five nights lined up throughout the summer The pool is reopening toward the end of May, right on time for our Memorial Day Pool Party And those late afternoon rounds on the golf course can be truly magical when the temperature is just right
Looking Ahead at the Event Calendar
In May, we’ll be celebrating the incredible mothers in our Club with a Mother’s Day Brunch on Sunday, May 10th.
As part of this year’s Mother’s Day celebration, we’re proud to partner with For Mamas, an organization committed to reducing preventable newborn deaths by equipping midwives in Zanzibar, Tanzania with life-saving training and essential tools For Mamas was founded by Gina Wilson, a local practicing nurse practitioner and Duke University graduate
We’re honored to support Gina and her team in raising awareness for this meaningful cause. As part of their fundraising efforts, For Mamas is offering floral arrangements for Mother’s Day Be sure to check them out as a thoughtful way to celebrate while giving back You can check the Club’s online calendar or contact the clubhouse for more details.
Summer is also summer camp time for all of the students who are out of school and looking for activities to stay busy and social. Nicole Thompson and our Kids Camp team are excited to host our young members this summer We have multiple weeks of Tennis Camp, Golf Camp, and Pickleball Camp lined up, so be sure to get your children signed up before these exciting weeks of camp fill up
In June, we’ll be hosting our SCC Bourbon and Cigar Night at the Club on Saturday, June 20th. The following week we’re hosting the Sedgefield Cup (Men’s Member-Guest) I cannot wait to see what Eric and our professional golf staff have in store for those participating in this year’s Sedgefield Cup.
There are lots of great things happening here at Sedgefield Country Club, and our team is truly excited to support our members this summer
Experimenting to Enhance and Evolve the Club
I want to take a moment to thank our members for the support and feedback we’ve received over the past few months. As we continue making changes to enhance the Club experience, we’ve been encouraged by the positive response At the same time, we remain committed to improving. Not every change will resonate with everyone, and we understand that Our responsibility is to act in the best interest of the membership as a whole and continue moving this Club forward
I recently went to watch the Savannah Bananas play in Chapel Hill at Kenan Stadium If you don’t know the story about the Savannah Bananas, they were a struggling minor league baseball team that couldn’t draw fans and their owner, Jesse Cole, decided to go in a completely non-traditional direction He essentially turned his minor league team into a circus that takes place on a baseball diamond instead of under a big tent.
While the Savannah Bananas are now traveling across the country and selling out massive stadiums, I have noticed one key thing that hasn’t changed since their early days: they continue to experiment with new ideas to enhance the fan experience
They have expanded into a full league built around the Bananas and are constantly testing new ingame entertainment that connects with all generations. In Chapel Hill, they brought out the Banana Nanas to do a dance between innings Princess Potassium led a dance-off for one lucky girl to be declared “Princess of the Game ” And then there was a dance-off between three pregnant women, which may have been the funniest thing I’ve seen at any sporting event.

While the dancing Nanas and the Princess dance-off are a little more traditional for Minor League Baseball games, I’m trying to figure out who presented the pregnant lady dance-off idea to Mr Cole Someone had to raise their hand and say, “Let’s try this.” That takes guts. Especially when you know you’re about to do this in front of 50,000 fans
That same experimental mindset is what our team is going to bring to the work we do for our members. Not every idea we pursue will be a home run, but we will always have the membership as a whole in mind

The key is your constructive feedback. Always let us know how we can better support you and your families And as we continue to make changes and try new approaches, we appreciate your trust and a bit of grace along the way
Enjoy your summer, and please let us know if there’s anything we can help you with
See you out there, Wes Rowe, General Manager

Summer has always held a special place in my memory As kids, it felt like the season stretched on forever long, sun-soaked days with nothing but possibility ahead of us. We rode our bikes until the streetlights flickered on, met up with friends without a second thought, and spent hours splashing in creeks and lakes, completely carefree Those were the days when time moved a little slower and every moment seemed to matter just a bit more.
Each year brought its own traditions, like the much-anticipated pilgrimage to visit our grandparents a trip filled with laughter, stories, and a deep sense of connection There were also the unforgettable weeks at scout camp, where we learned life skills, built confidence, and discovered the basics of wilderness survival Looking back, those experiences shaped so much of who we are, and they remain some of the most cherished memories of my life
Now, as I watch my own family grow, I find myself excited to help create those same kinds of moments simple, meaningful, and lasting That’s part of what makes this time of year so special here at Sedgefield Country Club Summer is more than just a season it’s an opportunity to reconnect, recharge, and make memories together
This year, we’re thrilled to offer a wide range of member activities designed for every age and interest From golf, tennis, and fitness camps to long afternoons spent enjoying the pool, there’s something for everyone in the family Our calendar is full, and there is truly no shortage of events to look forward to this summer
As the weather warms up, you can expect even more opportunities for family fun, whether it’s a celebration at the clubhouse or a relaxing day poolside We’re also excited to offer members the chance to host private events with us. Whether you’re planning a family gathering, personal celebration, or business function, our team is here to help bring your vision to life If you prefer to stay cool during the summer heat, our main clubhouse provides a comfortable and inviting setting. Or, if you’re looking to embrace the sunshine, hosting by the pool offers a refreshing and vibrant atmosphere
The options are endless, and our family-oriented team is ready to make your event truly memorable one that you and your guests will be talking about long after summer fades.
Be sure to check the club’s website regularly or reach out to us directly with any questions or to sign up for upcoming activities We look forward to working with you and your family to create unforgettable experiences and memories that will last a lifetime this summer
Kindest,
Travis Huddleston Catering & Sales Director

In March, Old North State Club played host to the second annual McConnell Golf Tournament of Champions with 15 clubs being represented. Congratulations to Raleigh Country Club as they defended their team title, shooting -12 under par. In the individual divisions, Ryan Tyndall (The Reserve Golf Club) won the Men's Club Championship, Caroline Ellington (Raleigh Country Club) won the Women's Club Championship, Hunter Grove (Raleigh Country Club) won the Senior/Super Senior Championship and Dalton Rich (Brook Valley Country Club) won the Professional Championship Thank you to the staff and membership at Old North State Club for their hospitality

During the course of play, a Pro-Am is also conducted with the three amateurs and their Club Professional using the best two gross balls per hole

McConnell Golf once again placed all of its North Carolina private clubs among the state’s Top 100 courses, highlighted by four clubs earning Top 25 rankings in the North Carolina Golf Panel’s 30th annual statewide rankings, published in the April issue of Business North Carolina magazine
Leading the portfolio is Greensboro’s Sedgefield Country Club, home of the PGA TOUR’s Wyndham Championship, ranked No 7 in North Carolina Old North State Club in New London followed at No 11, while Raleigh Country Club climbed to No 15 Durham’s Treyburn Country Club made one of the year’s biggest moves, jumping four spots into the Top 25 at No 25 In total, 11 McConnell Golf courses earned Top 100 recognition statewide, marking a strong year of upward momentum across the company’s North Carolina portfolio
Several Triangle-area clubs posted notable improvements. The Country Club at Wakefield Plantation in Raleigh made a significant leap, rising to No. 75 from No. 94 last year. Treyburn’s move into the Top 25 further strengthened the region’s standing among the state’s premier courses. Eastern North Carolina also saw major gains, as Wilson Country Club surged into the Top 100 at No. 84 after being unranked last year one of the largest upward moves in this year’s rankings
Other McConnell Golf properties earning Top 100 honors include:
Country Club of Asheville, ranked No 52, up two spots year-over-year
The Cardinal by Pete Dye in Greensboro, ranked No 54, continuing its steady upward trend
Porters Neck Country Club in Wilmington, improving to No 57
Providence Country Club in Charlotte, ranked No. 85.
Brook Valley Country Club in Greenville, rounding out the list at No. 100.
McConnell Golf remains the only individual golf course owner in the world to steward four Donald Ross-designed courses, including Sedgefield Country Club and Raleigh Country Club, both of which continue to rank among North Carolina’s elite layouts The 2026 North Carolina Golf Panel rankings, based on playability, design, conditioning and experience, highlight another strong year driven by continued investment in courses, facilities and member experience

The golf season is officially underway, and the turf has come through winter in excellent condition especially impressive given the extreme cold we experienced in January. Fortunately, the snowfall acted as a protective insulating layer, shielding the turf from potentially damaging temperatures.
We’re looking ahead to a strong season with warm weather and outstanding playing conditions.
As a reminder, aerification of greens, tees, and fairways will take place from April 27 through May 4 Thanks to the healthy turf and favorable conditions, recovery is expected to be quick, with surfaces returning to form within a few weeks.
With the arrival of warmer weather, we’re also resuming our regular maintenance practices. Each Monday during the growing season, greens will be verti-groomed and lightly topdressed with ultra-fine sand This routine is low-impact for play but essential to maintaining consistent, high-quality putting surfaces.
Take advantage of the beautiful spring conditions before the summer heat arrives we look forward to seeing you on the course!
Sincerely,
Chad Cromer Golf Course Superintendent
The entire Golf Course Maintenance Team

Spring is here and the course is greening up nicely Like most of you, I was expecting to have a good bit of winter damage after the winter we had. The course was buried under sleet and then snow for several weeks, with very cold temperatures during that time The past few times that we have had major winter damage was when we had this exact same set up, but thankfully this year we are looking great We will still be doing some sodding around the course. Some of the sod that has been down for a while was from winter projects that we completed, while the sod put down more recently has been laid to fix scars from last winter Last year we had so much winter damage that we never got to some of the smaller areas. Now that we have a more normal spring, we can focus on fixing all of the scars that we never got to last year. By the time we get to our June course closure, my goal is to have fixed all of the bare spots in the short cut
The biggest thing the course needs right now is some rain We have been very dry going all the way back to the fall of 2025 I know we have had some wet stretches during this time, but every month we have not met our average rainfall totals for those months So far this spring we have been very warm and very dry We do have a great irrigation system on the course but we just can’t keep up with the watering demands with no rain We will see how the rest of the spring goes, but let’s all start doing a little rain dance from time to time to see if we can’t force some good luck.
Hope to see you out on the course this spring hitting some bombs on these dry and firm fairways!!
Sincerely,
Ross Jernigan Golf Course Superintendent

These guys did an incredible job helping us remove snow and ice during the winter storms. Congratulations to the entire GCM Team on this well-earned recognition

SEDGEFIELD TIMES

The golf season is now in full swing, with unseasonably warm weather accelerating our transition from Spring into Summer As a result, course conditions have responded very well, and the golf course has greened up nicely as we head into the upcoming Summer months
We have enjoyed an excellent start to our member event schedule Both the Season Opening event in March and the Masters Pro
Member-Member in April reached full capacity, each with a waiting list, reflecting the strong enthusiasm and participation from our membership. As we move into the Summer season, we kindly ask that you take a moment to review and refresh yourself on several important policies and procedures outlined below in this communication
Please note that the month of May will be a bit slower, as we will be aerifying the greens during the first week This annual maintenance period is essential, and Chad Cromer and his team will be working diligently to complete the process as efficiently as possible During this time, and for several weeks following, course conditions will not be at their peak especially for those planning to host guests. Recovery time will largely depend on weather conditions, but a good general expectation is that conditions will return to normal around or shortly after Memorial Day.
For those interested, the Golf Professional Staff will be happy to assist in arranging tee times at our Sister Properties during this maintenance period.
We also encourage you to stay tuned for additional events and programming, as we have an exciting lineup planned for the months ahead Before long, Summer will be fully underway, and we look forward to enjoying it with all of you
Thank You,
Eric Ferguson, PGA Director of Golf

Hydration Might Be Costing You More Than You Think

(by Lou Stagner)
Earlier this week, an elite player I work with was talking to me about oncourse nutrition and hydration This is an important topic that most golfers pay zero attention to.
There is an interesting study titled Effect of Acute Mild Dehydration on Cognitive-Motor Performance in Golf by Mark F. Smith, Alex J. Newell, and Mistrelle R. Baker.
Golfers tend to think about hydration as a comfort issue Was I thirsty? Did I feel tired? Did I get a headache? Was it hot out?
There is much more to it than that
Smith, Newell, and Baker looked at seven low-handicap golfers and tested them in two states: hydrated and mildly dehydrated.
The dehydration protocol was simple A 12-hour fluid restriction That is essentially not drinking anything after dinner until the next morning.
This wasn't some extreme survival test These players were only mildly dehydrated On average, body mass dropped by about 1 5% For a 200pound golfer, that's about 3 pounds. You wouldn't even feel it.
That matters because a lot of golfers either start the round that way or drift into that range during a round without thinking much about it. Especially in heat Especially when they walk Especially when they're "too busy playing" to hydrate
The players did two golf-specific tasks First, they hit shots with a 9-iron, 7-iron, and 5-iron Second, they completed a distance-judgment task where they estimated yardages to the flag.
When players were dehydrated, they hit the ball a lot worse. They were about a club shorter when dehydrated, and their offline dispersion was much worse, going from about 13'6" to 26 feet They were likely making worse contact, and that worse contact was showing up as both shorter distances and a bigger miss pattern.
Their distance judgment got much worse Average error in estimating distance to the target jumped from 14 feet to nearly 29 feet.

Ferg’s Fixes | Continued Hydration Might Be Costing You More Than You Think
A lot of golfers think hydration only becomes important once they "feel" dehydrated That's probably too late
By the time your focus is down, your energy is flat, and your yardages start getting fuzzy, the damage may already be showing up on the scorecard.
My Thoughts
This was a small study Seven players under controlled testing So we shouldn't pretend it answered every question about hydration in golf. But I did remind us that even mild dehydration can affect the body and the brain in a game that depends heavily on both
And that lines up with what many players have experienced even if they didn't label it correctly "I just felt a little off " "I couldn't focus " "My numbers felt weird." "I wasn't sharp late in the round."
Maybe it wasn't your swing Maybe it was your hydration
Don't make hydration an afterthought Show up hydrated Start early Sip during the round instead of trying to play catch-up later And if you play in warm conditions or tend to sweat a lot, build a plan instead of winging it.

Wow what a start to the 2026 golf season. Weather has been amazing which has led to an unbelievably early start to the year With green grass popping and putts starting to drop we couldn’t have asked for a better beginning. The season officially kicked off with our Season Opening event back on Saturday, April 4th The event drew 104 players enjoying a wonderful format, beautiful weather, some incredible food provided by our culinary team, and a little live music on the patio The competition is stellar with two teams claiming the top spot in both Gross and Net division Our Gross Champions were the team of Scotty Trogdon, Christopher Cox, Preston Dembowiak and Brandon Dembowiak The team of Gregg Wisniewski, Jay Smith, Logan Key and Stuart Miller claimed the Net division Title Congratulations to our winner and a great jump start to the beginning of the new season.
Ross and his team have done some great work leading into the season getting the golf course ready for all of us to enjoy With new drainage installed on holes 14 and 15 and the reshaping of the creek between hole 2 and 8, Ross is now turning his attention to using his magic for good and providing another year of beautiful conditions around the Cardinal. We have much to be thankful for in having Ross as our Superintendent and can’t wait to enjoy his creation once again this year
Thank you Ross and your team

Scotty Trogdon, Christopher Cox, Preston Dembowiak, and Brandon Dembowiak.

A couple other season long events had their start during the month of April The Cardinal Ladies Golf Association kicked off their season this past month with a wonderful group of ladies. A group of new players joined the fun and have been creating new friendships and sharing laughs with each and every round they play Wednesday Night Men’s League had an impressive beginning to its 2026 campaign Thirty-six players joined us on the first night and we welcome numerous new players to the field It’s great to see so many players come out to play and enjoy mixing it up with different people each week, creating new friends, and enjoying the special place we call The Cardinal.
Juniors have taken the stage the last few weeks around the club Not only has the club opened its doors to a few local middle and high school teams, we have also started our very own Junior League This league is open to all juniors and their friends and plays every other Sunday afternoon. We started this league to get juniors to play together, create lifelong golf buddies, teach the juniors new golf formats, and hopefully have a little fun We’ve also seen a huge increase in the students enrolled in our Operation36 junior school With the classes running continuously on Thursday, juniors will have consistent opportunities to learn and enjoy the game Nic and Jay have done a wonderful job making the program fun for each student, which is the #1 goal. If you have a junior looking to learn golf or start playing more regularly with other juniors I would definitely give either of these two programs a try
As we look forward to the next few weeks on the calendar at The Cardinal, keep these events in mind and come join us at the club.

May is National Physical Fitness and Sports Month, an annual initiative started in 1983 to promote healthy, active lifestyles
During the month of May, Join the Group: Weekly “HighIntensity Training” Tuesday and Thursdays at 6AM NO Sign-Up needed JUST SHOW UP!
Hip mobility is the ability of the hip joint to actively move through its full range of motion (flexion, extension, rotation) It is crucial for easing daily movements, increasing athletic power, relieving lower back/knee pain, and supporting, stable posture It involves both flexible muscles and strong, active control of the joint
Key Benefits of a Targeted Hip Mobility Plan
Reduced Pain & Improved Movement: By targeting muscle imbalances (like the VMO and glutes), the plan alleviates lower back and hip discomfort caused by tightness
Enhanced Performance: Increased hip flexibility allows for better form in exercises like squats and improved running efficiency.
Injury Prevention: By restoring range of motion and improving motor control, these routines help reduce the risk of common overuse injuries.
Targeted Exercises: The AI can generate tailored routines, such as a 15minute routine for weightlifters, focusing on deep stretches and active movement
Better Posture: Regular stretching of hip flexors helps properly realign the pelvis and reduce strain on the lower back
Functional Daily Life: Improved hip mobility makes everyday movements like walking and climbing stairs feel more natural
This 30-day hip mobility plan focuses on increasing range of motion, reducing tightness from sitting, and strengthening supporting muscles using daily 7–15 minute routines The plan emphasizes active movement like 90/90s and deep squats rather than passive stretching, aimed at achieving better, pain-free movement.
Core Daily/Weekly Structure (Progressive Routine)
Weeks 1-2: Activation & Opening (Focus: Routine)
90/90 Internal Rotation Knee Drops: 40-50 seconds.
90/90 Pigeon Stretch: 40-50 seconds per side
Frog Rocks: 40-50 seconds.
Deep Squat Sits: Hold for 60-90 seconds (use props if necessary)
Table Top Hip CARS (Controlled Articular Rotations): 5 reps per leg Weeks 3-4: Strengthening & Range (Focus: Intensity)
Cossack Squats: 40-50 seconds (alternating sides)
90/90 Rear Knee/Heel Lifts: 40-50 seconds per side
Couch Stretch: 60-90 seconds per side (push knee down, squeeze glute)
Weighted Hip Flexor Stretch: 40-50 seconds
Key Principles for Success
Consistency: Perform at least 5-7 minutes daily to "unlock" hips Active Mobility: Do not just stretch; focus on muscle engagement at the end range
