Bennett Rhame & Brooke Mann – please welcome Bennett & Brooke as the newest members of Sedgefield Country Club! Both graduated from East Carolina University in 2023. Bennett now works for Miller Valentine Construction as an Assistant Superintendent, and Brooke works as a nanny in the Greensboro area. They were referred to the club by member John Rishel and are both very excited to play golf, and meet the membership while spending time out at the club. We welcome them to the Sedgefield family!

Originally from Wilmington, Delaware, they relocated to our area almost 40 years ago. Peter was an Account Executive for Celanese Corporation but recently retired as-of January 31, 2025! Kim is a retired teacher. They have three adult children; Stephanie, Ryan & Kelly. Daughter Kelly, son-in-law Matt, and granddaughter Hazel May live close by in The Cardinal, and they hope to utilize the club with them as a family. The Langeraks were referred to the club by Sedgefield member David Wilhoit. We welcome them to The Cardinal!

Greetings from Sedgefield Country Club, where membership enrollments continue moving full speed ahead! A healthy club grows from within, and it is apparent things are going well as almost all of our new member enrollments lately were referred in by current members. We enjoy sharing the finer things in life and the things that make us feel good with others, and it is a great testament to the membership that so many have referred their friends and family to the club.

As we enter spring (hopefully soon!), we can finally stash the green covers away and get back to what we do best, which is playing golf! The winter months make me yearn for warm and sunny days with a busy tee sheet. Hopefully we will have those soon.

Nicole Thompson is the Activities and Communications Manager here at Sedgefield, having joined our team in June 2024. She holds a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education and a Master's degree in Science Education, both from East Carolina University. A fun fact about Nicole is that she is a triplet! Outside of work, Nicole enjoys reading and cherishing quality time with her family. She is excited to create memorable, fun-filled Kids Club nights for everyone to enjoy!

Hannah Bush is a current graduate student at High Point University, pursuing a degree in Communications and Business Leadership. She recently graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Data Analytics & Statistics and a double minor in Data Science and Computer Science. Outside of work and school, Hannah enjoys watching football and basketball, especially UVA games, and spending time with her dog, Millie. She looks forward to fun filled Kids Club nights!

Maria Golden is a current undergraduate student at University of North Carolina Greensboro, pursuing a degree in Public Health Education.

She recently graduated with an associates degree in Physical Education. Outside of work and school, Maria enjoys spending time with her many nieces and nephews and playing basketball. She looks forward to doing fun activities in Kids Club!

Kalei Swanier is a recent graduate of North Carolina A&T State University with a Bachelor’s degree in biology. Outside of the Kids Club and studying for the MCAT, Kalei loves to cook, workout, and spend time with family. She looks forward to having fun and making memories in the Kids Club!

2025 ACC WOMEN’S GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP | APRIL 16 -19 AT SEDGEFIELD COUNTRY CLUB The ACC Women’s Golf Championship returns to familiar territory in 2025, as Sedgefield Country Club plays host to the prestigious event for the 12th time. After last year’s competition at Porters Neck Country Club, the championship moves back to Greensboro, N.C., where the historic Donald Ross-designed course will challenge the conference’s top golfers. Last year’s champions, the Wake Forest Demon Deacons, will look to defend their title against a talented field of ACC competition.

SUPERINTENDENT’S CORNER A NOTE FROM YOUR SEDGEFIELD SUPERINTENDENT

A NOTE FROM YOUR CARDINAL SUPERINTENDENT

Dear Members,

What a start to the year we have had here at the Cardinal in 2025. January was one of the coldest months on record in Greensboro. As you may remember, we received about 3 inches of snow in early January that stuck around for a while due to the cold weather. The course had to stay closed for 17 days in January due to snow-covered or frozen greens. I know some of you have been asking about how much winter damage we may see this spring, and to be honest it is a hard question to answer. We really will not know until spring and the grass starts to greens up. The good news is, the last time we had winter damage, we sodded the damaged areas with Tahoma 31 bermudagrass which is a much more cold-tolerant turf type. I am hopeful that we will see the benefits of installing Tahoma 31 and that we will come out of winter with little to no damage.

As we look back on January, it’s clear that Greensboro experienced one of the coldest months in recent memory. We saw several days of freezing temperatures and below-average highs, with a number of days dipping well below 20°F. The region also experienced the coldest stretch of weather in years, leading to a significant period of frost and colder-than-typical conditions for this time of year.

In fact, local historical weather data shows that January 2025 ranked among the coldest on record for this part of North Carolina, with average temperatures falling far below the norm.

This cold snap also brought with it an extended period of time where our greens had to remain covered. Due to the severity and duration of the cold temperatures, we made the decision to protect the greens for the longest consecutive period since converting to Bermuda grass greens which is now 25 days.

As you may know, Bermuda grass thrives in warmer weather, and extended exposure to freezing temperatures can cause significant damage. We are excited to report that our proactive measures of covering the greens with our normal black covers and the additional turf blankets kept the soil temps and moisture levels high enough that we did not experience any cold weather damage to these areas during that long cold stretch. It is still too soon yet to determine if there is any winter damage to other parts of the golf course but based on historical data, we can probably expect to have some on holes #5 and #10 and maybe a few other places. We will know more about these areas as we move into April and May with the warmer temperatures.

Thank you for your patience and continued support during this unusual winter weather. We’re excited for what’s to come in the months ahead and will keep you updated on any further developments.

Let’s talk about ongoing and upcoming projects. First, the only thing left to do on the hillside on the 7th tee is to grade the area and sod it. The stumps are now ground and out of the way, so once the weather allows we will get back to work on this project. Next, we have a driving range mat that will be installed on the back of the bottom range tee. The work was scheduled to being mid-February but is getting pushed back due to weather. This will be a great addition to our practice area that will help us to provide better practice conditions year round. Lastly, for all of you who enjoy walking out there, be on the lookout for some new walk bridges. We will be building three new walk bridges that cross the big creek this spring. We will be replacing the bridge going from 13 green to 14 tee, the bridge crossing in front of 15 green, and the bridge in front of 17 red tee.

With spring right around the corner, that means so is our first greens aerification of the year. The course will be closed on March 3rd and 4thto allow us time to aerify, clean up, and top-dress greens. As most of you know, the March aerification is always the slowest one of the year for the greens to recover from due to the cooler weather. We have a good fertility plan in place to get the greens back to normal as soon as Mother Nature will allow.

TEE IT UP AT SEDGEFIELD A NOTE FROM YOUR DIRECTOR OF GOLF

McConnell Golf Policies

Old Man Winter has certainly made his mark on the start of 2025, bringing us our first measurable snowfall and ending the second-longest drought on record.

The snowfall, combined with bitterly cold temperatures, kept the greens covered for a record amount of time—over three straight weeks. While we still have some winter weather to contend with, we know that Spring is just around the corner. We’re eagerly looking forward to the start of the season, as the beginning of March marks the official kickoff. The Ladies and Senior Men’s Associations will host their opening breakfast next week, and we’ll launch our first member event with the annual Season Opener in March, followed by the Masters Pro Member-Member event in April.

We would like to also remind everyone of a few of our policies. Sedgefield Full Golf Members have unlimited access to the practice facilities during operational hours. Guests may use these facilities when accompanied by a member on the day of play. Guests are not allowed to use the practice facilities at any other time. Please note that proper attire is required (athletic clothing, along with denim are prohibited while playing or practicing. Shirttails must remain tucked in and all hat/caps must be worn facing forward).

Full Golf Members are allowed fifteen (15) visits to our sister owned properties with no more than three (3) plays at any one property during the calendar year per Membership for cart fee only. Any Member play over this maximum, unless allowed by Membership Classification, will pay the appropriate daily Accompanied Guest Fee in place at the property visited. All starting times outside of Sedgefield and Cardinal must be arranged by the Sedgefield Golf Professional Staff.

For Members who are bringing Guest(s) to Sedgefield Country Club or any other McConnell Golf Property, each -same- Guest(s) is allowed ten (10) plays combined across ALL MCG owned properties, with no more than six (6) plays at any one property during the calendar year. Tournament play does not count toward guest round limit.

TEE IT UP AT SEDGEFIELD 2025 Men's Prize Fund Weekends Prize Fund Weekends are some of the most popular events we host throughout the year. Prize Fund Weekends consist of eight different individual formats played on pre-determined weekends April through October (dates are listed below). The field is separated into two divisions: Regular Men's Division (White Tees with Gross & Net Divisions) & Senior Men's Division (Blue Tees Net Division Only). Participating members are billed $80 in March and must notify the golf shop staff on the day of play to participate (must choose Saturday or Sunday). All scorecards must be turned into the golf shop upon completion of your round. Winners are announced on the following Tuesday. THE HOLE-IN-ONE CLUB One of the most enjoyable feats in the game of golf is a Hole-in-One. Some golfers play for years and never accomplish this and some people have had numerous ONES! Those that have made numerous HIO’s…can still remember every detail of EVERY hole-in-one they ever made. It is a feat so rare in a golfer’s career is deserves to be celebrated and rewarded!

We want to make certain that everyone FULLY enjoys this wonderful feat!

So, we want introduce you to our Hole-In-One Club and insure existing members understand the policies regarding the HIO Club. Additionally, we have made some slight modifications to the HIO Club to make it even more profitable for the player recording the Hole-In-One, so please pay attention to the italicized sections to understand the modifications.

1. Each member of the HIO club is billed $5 for each HIO recorded by a HIO Club member. (Currently we have 300+ members in the HIO Club).

2. ALL HIO’s must have at least two witnesses and only one of which can be a family member.

3. To win the purse from the HIO Club, you must be a member of the HIO Club before teeing off and the HIO must be made at Sedgefield or The Cardinal.

4. The HIO member recording a HIO may, at his or her discretion, open bar tab using HIO club funds at the bar of their choice (at Sedgefield or Cardinal). The bar tab will not open until the celebrating member arrives in the bar they choose. Previously, no limitations on the number of open bars existed. Because Sedgefield has multiple bars locations we are now limiting the bar tab to the bar the member is currently celebrating in.

5. Using the HIO funds to open a bar tab is at the sole discretion of the celebrating member. The celebrating member also determines how long the bar will be open and who receives drinks. Beverages applied to the tab may either be a single beer, wine offered by the glass, or a cocktail not to exceed $10. Any other selections must be approved by the celebrating member. Previously, other members accepting a drink had no limitations on selections, but we felt celebrating members were unknowingly being taken advantage of.

6. The bar tab will be limited to an amount equal to half of the purse or when the member leaves/closes the tab, whichever comes first. If the celebrating member would prefer to keep the tab open, he or she will be responsible for all charges exceeding half of the purse. Previously, the funds of the HIO Club could be used towards the entire bar tab. This modification insures the celebrating member will receive at least half of the purse in golf shop credit.

7. The bar tab is open to all members and guests in the bar with the celebrating member, if the celebrating member approves. You do not have to be a member of the HIO Club for somebody to buy you a drink, but we insist drinks bought with HIO fund are consumed in the bar with the celebrating member. Previously, members were taking liberties with the celebration and just grabbing a free drink and either left the bar or continued their round. This new modification insists that members and guests finish the drink in the bar with the celebrating member. Please keep in mind the whole premise behind buying drinks for a HIO is the celebration. If someone is kind enough to buy you a drink in celebration, please be courteous enough to stay and celebrate with them.

Designed to teach a student the game of golf from the green backward, it is a fun and rewarding way to get kids PLAYING golf. We will teach them certain drills, history and manners of the game, and fun activities for the kids to enjoy!

The Tuesday Tip's & Sip's Clinic Series is coming back this spring! This series will consist of 4 weeks and will cover a varying array of topics.

This is designed not only for beginners who are new to the game, but also for anyone looking to sharpen their skills to lower their handicaps.

This 6-week class will feature 6 group instructional sessions, as well as three 9-hole events where your child will actually play 9-holes from their current yardage. Players will start out at 25yds from the green, progressing backwards only after they are able to shoot 36 on 9-holes.

We will be offering classes Wednesday's from 4:30-5:30pm starting March 5th and will end April 9th.

Classes are independent of one another, so you do not need to commit to the entire 4 weeks if you aren't available. We will meet on Tuesdays from 4-5pm for class and have a short 15-minute recap on the Greenside Café Patio as you enjoy a complimentary drink! Classes will begin on March 18th and run till April 8th.

TEE IT UP AT THE CARDINAL A NOTE FROM YOUR DIRECTOR OF GOLF Let’s Start the New Season Off With a Bang

Thank you again for being a part of our family here at the Cardinal. Let’s make 2025 the best year yet at the Cardinal. Here’s to another 50 years.

I’m sure you are as tired of this winter season as I am. Usually I’m fine with a bit of winter however these last few weeks have been a pain in the you know what. Good thing is we are almost at the point we turn the calendar to a new season and warmer temperatures just around the corner. As we look towards the beginning of our 2025 Golf Season, we have to also recognize this year represents the 50th year of the Cardinal. I am honored to the Golf Professional at the Cardinal and to be a part of the clubs history. Being the 4th golf professional/director of golf, I take great pride in what we are providing and the new direction the club is going. We are poised to provide some great golf experiences this year and generate some new history into the club. Last year, we recognized Gregg Cox for being the clubs most dominate Club Champion in the clubs history by naming our Club Championship Trophy after him. This year we continue to honor a member who help add to the club’s fame by naming our Men’s Member/Member Championship after long time member Gil Happel. Mr. Happel provided the spark and drove the bus for one of the greatest amateur events in golf history. The Cardinal Amateur has roots that will continue to live within amateur golf and thanks must go to Mr. Happel and his long list of dedicated volunteers. We honor Mr. Happel with naming this wonderful event after him and forever this event will be known as The Gilsen. Thank you for your service and dedication to the club. So now let’s look into the future and celebrate the year to come.

With opening day only a month away, it is time to get the year started. On Saturday, April 5th, we will celebrate the 50th year of the club with a fun golf event in the morning, then in the afternoon we invite all members to come up and celebrate with us. We plan to have a little music on the patio, putting contest, and a cookout for all to enjoy. This will be a fantastic opportunity to enjoy the club, hangout with friends, and celebrate the club. For those playing in the morning tournament please continue to use the Tournament Directory link on the morning email or at the bottom of the page within the McConnell Golf App. Anyone wanting to attend the cookout not playing, there will also be a signup on the Tournament Directory for you to signup you and your family.

Hopefully by now, we have made a small capital improvement to the Cardinal Driving Range. We have installed a new mat. I know these have a negative appeal, however this will be good addition. Our range is a popular spot for a lot of members and we sometimes the grass needs a bit of a rest especially in the winter time. Should also help on those wet days when the grass is underwater. Want to thank McConnell Golf for the opportunity to help improve our facility.

Let’s enjoy the next couple weeks and get ready for the upcoming season. Get your game ready as we will start quick the first week of April. We appreciate everyone’s patience this winter and can’t wait to see you all around the club real soon.

Part of bringing back some history, we are reigniting the President’s Cup this year. This event is a 4-ball match play bracketed tournament. President’s Cup was last played 13 years ago. It’s time to bring it back. Event is open to all Cardinal and Sedgefield male golf members (no dependents) who love a little match play golf. Registration is open now and will close on April 15th. Teams will be seeded by handicap and the first round will start on May 1st. Full information is available on the Tournament Directory.

Remember, Men’s League will begin on Wednesday, April 9th. Ladies Night Out will begin on Thursday, April 24th. LNO is available to all lady players, beginner or more experienced. Group Exercises Classes

The weather has been less than desirable this season. Especially for folks who enjoy a warmer than usual day that allows for a round of golf or time on the tennis court. You may not be able to get outside on the course or courts right now, but there are exercises you can do now to improve your game and lessen the threat of injuries when you are able to return.

Group fitness classes are a great way to boost motivation and add variety to your workout routine.

Knowing that others will be there can help you stay consistent and keep you connected with others.

Both golf and tennis require a strong lower body and the ability to transfer that power to your arms and eventually to the golf or tennis ball.
