Wedgesareavitalpartofthegolfbag
Properloftgaps, freshgrooves, and bounces fit to your game and turf conditions are important factors when getting new wedges. Knowing your proper gaping from 9 iron, to pitching wedge, to gap wedge, and other scoring clubs will positively impact your scoresTypically you should have no more than 4-5 degrees in loft differencefromwedgetowedge Didyouknowmostpitchingwedgesare now much stronger loft-wise than they were 5-10 years ago? This plays a major role in selecting wedges for today’s game. Make sure to consult one of our Golf Professionals to make sure you have proper wedge gapping BUT, don’t sleep on dull, worn-out grooves! If you like spin you’ll want to make sure your grooves aren’t gone! Players encounter a variety of conditions with their wedges that lead to the groove edge wearing down over time. Every golfer should evaluate their wedges and grooves at approximately 75 rounds of play to get the best spin performance Don’t forget excessive practice will wear a wedge groove much quicker than playing. I always like when heavy practicers have their previous set of wedges they practice with while leaving fresher, newer wedges in the bag for play A good rule to live by with wedges If it’s time for a new grip, it’s timeforanewwedge

There has been a lot going on out on the golf course recently The turf is thriving with the warm temperatures, and course definition is getting more and more dialed in with every time we mow What a weather rollercoaster we have been on this spring Very dry and very warm Much different than last year’s “normal” transition In addition to staying on top of regular course maintenance, this is a very busy time of year with some big-time events on thecalendaroverthenextfewmonths, includingaerification.
This year for aerification, we will be repeating the same process as last year We will start by using our new verticutting machine This will help thin out thecanopywiththegoalofreducinggrainasmuchaswecan Theeffectsof using this machine last year were immediately noticeable. Once that is done, we will be using 0.625” coring tines to pull cores and remove as much organic matter as we can Then we will clean off the cores and backfill the leftover channels with clean sand that is comparable in particle size to the current greens mix Once vertical mowing and coring is done, we will come back around with 0.500” solid tines to poke more holes, then cap things off withaheavytopdress, lotsofrolling, andsomefertilizertogetthemhealing.
Why do we aerify? To get rid of thatch Thatch is the layer just beneath the canopy that is made up of organic matter, stolons, and rhizomes Too much thatch can cause the greens to become soft, prevent nutrient and water infiltration, hinder gas exchange and root growth, and promote root disease if fungicides can’t reach the root zone This is one of the reasons that we topdress on a regular basis Aggressive verticutting and core aerification will benefit plant health drastically and allow us to manage things more easily throughoutthesummermonths.

Inside McConnell Golf brings you a closer look at everything happening across our family of clubs With each newsletter edition, we’ll highlight company-wide initiatives, exciting updates, ongoing renovations, member-focused improvements and key marketing news all in one place Stay informed, be part of the story and see what’s buzzing around McConnell Golf

Sit back, relax, and enjoy the scenery of McConnell Golf! The Spring/Summer 2026 edition of McConnell Golf, The Magazine is out now, featuring stories on Revolutionary War roots at two South Carolina properties, the influence of Carolina BBQ on club menus, pairing birding with the game of golf, a century of Sedgefield Country Club and more
Since its inception in 2008, McConnell Golf has published over 30 editions of the magazine. If you have a story to share, contact Faith Inman at finman@mcconnellgolf com for a chance to be featured in the next issue

In March, Old North State Club played host to the second annual McConnell Golf Tournament of Champions with 15 clubs being represented. Congratulations to Raleigh Country Club as they defended their team title, shooting -12 under par. In the individual divisions, Ryan Tyndall (The Reserve Golf Club) won the Men's Club Championship, Caroline Ellington (Raleigh Country Club) won the Women's Club Championship, Hunter Grove (Raleigh Country Club) won the Senior/Super Senior Championship and Dalton Rich (Brook Valley Country Club) won the Professional Championship Thank you to the staff and membership at Old North State Club for their hospitality

Congratulations to Musgrove Mill Golf Club members Walt Todd Jr , Grainger Howle, Robert Lutomski along with golf professional Theo Davis on capturing the 42nd Trescott Championship! Finishing at 1-over (214), the team claimed the title in a sudden-death playoff on the first extra hole at Solina Golf Club
The Trescott Championship, named after the former long-time SCGA Secretary George C. Trescott, is a unique Club Championship where three amateur members from a club combine their aggregate score from each hole to compete for the Trescott Cup. During the course of play, a Pro-Am is also conducted with the three amateurs and their Club Professional using the best two gross balls per hole

McConnell Golf once again placed all of its North Carolina private clubs among the state’s Top 100 courses, highlighted by four clubs earning Top 25 rankings in the North Carolina Golf Panel’s 30th annual statewide rankings, published in the April issue of Business North Carolina magazine
Leading the portfolio is Greensboro’s Sedgefield Country Club, home of the PGA TOUR’s Wyndham Championship, ranked No 7 in North Carolina Old North State Club in New London followed at No 11, while Raleigh Country Club climbed to No 15 Durham’s Treyburn Country Club made one of the year’s biggest moves, jumping four spots into the Top 25 at No 25 In total, 11 McConnell Golf courses earned Top 100 recognition statewide, marking a strong year of upward momentum across the company’s North Carolina portfolio
Several Triangle-area clubs posted notable improvements. The Country Club at Wakefield Plantation in Raleigh made a significant leap, rising to No. 75 from No. 94 last year. Treyburn’s move into the Top 25 further strengthened the region’s standing among the state’s premier courses. Eastern North Carolina also saw major gains, as Wilson Country Club surged into the Top 100 at No. 84 after being unranked last year one of the largest upward moves in this year’s rankings
Other McConnell Golf properties earning Top 100 honors include:
Country Club of Asheville, ranked No 52, up two spots year-over-year
The Cardinal by Pete Dye in Greensboro, ranked No 54, continuing its steady upward trend
Porters Neck Country Club in Wilmington, improving to No 57
Providence Country Club in Charlotte, ranked No. 85.
Brook Valley Country Club in Greenville, rounding out the list at No. 100.
McConnell Golf remains the only individual golf course owner in the world to steward four Donald Ross-designed courses, including Sedgefield Country Club and Raleigh Country Club, both of which continue to rank among North Carolina’s elite layouts The 2026 North Carolina Golf Panel rankings, based on playability, design, conditioning and experience, highlight another strong year driven by continued investment in courses, facilities and member experience

PB&JCOOKIE
SEANO’NEILL,EXECUTIVECHEFAT TREYBURNCOUNTRYCLUB
As a chef and a father, I refused to let my kid have a limited palate As long as she tried at least three bites of any food I put in front of hertogiveherpalatetimetoadjust,Iwouldbelieveherifshedidor didn’t like something This for the most part has worked out well, and she eats all kinds of foods now One thing she never liked was jelly or jam. A kid that won’t eat the classic PB&J? I tried so many things to get her to try jams in different ways This cookie was one of those ways A little extra sweetness in a peanut butter cookie I enjoyed them a lot and held onto the recipe, my kid… Well, she still hatesjelliesandjams.
INGREDIENTS:
13/4cupsall-purposeflour
1/2tspbakingsoda
1/2tspkoshersalt
1/2cupunsaltedbutter,softened
1/2cupcreamypeanutbutter
1/2cuplightbrownsugar
1/4cupgranulatedsugar
1largeegg
1tsppurevanillaextract
1/2cupjam,suchasstrawberryorraspberry

In a medium bowl, whisk flour, baking soda, and salt until combined In a large bowl, using a handheld mixer on medium-high speed, beat butter and peanut butter until smooth Add brown sugar and granulated sugar and beat until creamy Add egg and vanilla and beat until combined Add dry ingredients and beat on medium speed until just combined Using a medium (about 2 tablespoons) cookie scoop, scoop out dough Press your thumb into the center to create a deep hole. Spoon 1 scant teaspoon jam into hole Gently press dough back together and roll into a ball; the jam might start leaking out, and that’s okay Arrange on 2 parchment-lined baking sheets, spacing 2" apart. Refrigerate until chilled, about 30 minutes. Preheat conventional oven to 350° or convection oven with low fan to 325°. Bake cookies until edges are just set and centers are slightly soft, about 12 minutes
