Golf Tip
Practice like you are on the course! Far too often we see many members hitting balls with no purpose Work done on the range should be taken as serious as the shots you are preparing to hit once you peg it on the 1st tee. After your initial warm up of hitting wedges, mid-irons, etc. try playing the first two to three holes in your head. Tee off on 1, hit your iron into a target, the hit the shot you anticipate hitting into the 2nd hole If you aren’t playing that particular day but are getting in a full-fledged range session, play holes while you practice Putting yourself in more “game like” conditions will only help improve your score The Golf Professionals urge you to practice with a purpose, especially as the tournament season ramps up

There has been a lot going on out on the golf course recently The turf i thriving with the warm temperatures and course definition is getting more and more dialed in with every time we mow We have had a pretty good spring Feels like the first time in a few years that we’ve had somewhat of a norma spring transition without it being “unseasonably cold” or “unseasonabl warm” In addition to staying on top of regular course maintenance, this is very busy time of year with major events on the calendar over the next few monthsincludingCrownCupandCourseAerification
This year for aerification, we will be going back to a more traditional method for our greens process We will be using 0625” coring tines to pull cores and remove as much organic matter as possible Then we will clean off the core and backfill the leftover channels with clean sand that is comparable in particle size to the current greens mix. Once all the holes are filled we wi follow up with some aggressive vertical mowing in several directions This wi help thin out the canopy with the goal of reducing grain as much as we can Once coring and vertical mowing is done, we will come back around with 0.500” solid tines to poke more holes, then cap things off with a heav topdress, lotsofrolling, andsomefertilizertogetthemhealing.
Why do we aerify? To get rid of thatch Thatch is the layer just beneath th canopy that is made up of organic matter, stolons, and rhizomes. Too much thatch can cause the greens to become soft, can prevent nutrient and wate infiltration, hinder gas exchange and root growth, and promote root disease fungicides can’t reach the root zone This is one of the reasons that w topdress on a regular basis Core aerification will benefit plant health drastically and allow us to manage things easier throughout the summe months
