A MESSAGE FROM YOUR DIRECTOR OF GOLF

Summer has officially arrived, and it could not have started on a better note. The event showcased everything that makes Old North State Club special outstanding camaraderie, exceptional hospitality, and a shared appreciation for time spent with friends and family

A tremendous thank you goes out to the many team members who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to make the tournament such a memorable experience Chris Chapman, Dustin Rhodes, Josh Kahl, and the entire Agronomy Team presented the golf course in immaculate condition Chef Kris, MV, David Wilson, Skyler Yon, Sarah Sifford, T, Kimberly, Savannah, Lisa, and the entire Food & Beverage team delivered exceptional service throughout the week. We also extend our appreciation to Brad Morgan, Roxanne, Mindy, and our Housekeeping and Maintenance teams, as well as Alex Stover, Jared Hedrick, Wyatt Reeder, James Baldauf, and Anne McMullen from the Golf Operations team.

A special thank you to Breon Allen for hosting the Post Putting Pool Party, which was a tremendous hit and a wonderful addition to the festivities

Thank you to everyone who participated and helped make this year's Member-Guest one of our best yet We look forward to carrying this momentum into an exciting summer season at the Club

A MESSAGE FROM YOUR COURSE SUPERINTENDENT

I've noticed our greens are beginning to develop a healthy thatch layer, which is helping them hold iron shots better As thatch naturally builds over time, the playing characteristics of the greens will continue to evolve. While some thatch is beneficial, too much can create soft, spongy conditions, so maintaining the proper balance is important.

As our greens mature, we'll continue adjusting our aerification and topdressing program to keep them performing at their best Since our thatch layer is still relatively minimal, we will continue using small tines to relieve compaction and promote root growth, along with moderate sand topdressing and verticutting

To complete this work, the course will be closed July 6th –10th. I anticipate the greens will be fully healed within 12–15 days.

Enjoy the summer, and I hope to see you on the course

CHRIS’ TENNIS TIDBIT

Gaining a little “pop” on your serve...

You may be a person who struggles with their serve, or just slowly “gets it in” to get the point started But what if you could use your serve as a bit of a weapon, even at the club level? Let’s discuss!

Setup:

Have your front toe pointing toward the rightmost net post Back foot parallel to the baseline about shoulder width apart This makes so your body must turn and accelerate toward the ball.

Toss & Contact Point:

Have your toss hand at the same angle as your front toe. Keep the ball in your fingertips to prevent excess spin or movement You should be able to catch the ball where you released it Contact the ball out in front of your body, approximately a foot inside the baseline.

Load & Explode:

As you get your toss going, your racket should end up near “back scratch” position with a loose grip pressure. Load up on your back foot and explode toward the ball If this is properly done, you’ll end up a bit inside the court after contact

Wrist Snap:

As you accelerate toward the ball with your racket, snap your wrist up and out toward the target to create power and spin on the ball.

Remember some of these key phrases while practicing I’d be happy to show you in person during a private or group lesson as well!

DOUG’S PICKLEBALL POINTER

Unit Turn Benefits

Many of our ONSC Pickleball players often mention watching the professional players on TV. Although their game is much faster than the regular recreational game, you will see them prepare their paddle early for most shots They utilize a “Unit Turn” (UT) to create power and control. The UT also lessens the stress on the arm by eliminating “arm only” swings.

The UT is an easy-to-learn action that the recreational player can use to prepare early for and improve many of their shots. This action requires the paddle, shoulders and hips to turn at the same time to prepare for the swing Often, but not always, the repositioning of the feet is necessary With ample practice, the UT will enhance your return of serve, forehand & backhand drives, overheads, resets, putaways and long drop shots

I’ll be happy to work with you during a clinic or private lesson; however, YouTube has many videos on the UT

FRANKIE’S FITNESS FACTS

Why Protein and Strength Training Become More Important as We Age

Many people notice that maintaining their weight becomes more challenging as they get older, even when they haven't changed their eating habits One of the primary reasons is the natural loss of muscle mass that occurs with aging

Research shows that adults can lose approximately 8–10% of their muscle mass per decade after the age of 30, with the rate of loss often accelerating after age 60 This gradual decline, known as sarcopenia, has a significant impact on metabolism, strength, energy levels, and overall health.

Muscle tissue is metabolically active, meaning it requires calories to maintain itself even when you're resting. Fat tissue, on the other hand, requires far fewer calories As muscle mass decreases and body fat increases, the body's metabolic rate slows down. This means you can be eating the same amount of food you did years ago and still gain weight because your body is burning fewer calories throughout the day

The good news is that muscle loss is not inevitable Two of the most effective tools for preserving and rebuilding muscle are adequate protein intake and regular strength training

Protein provides the amino acids needed to repair and build muscle tissue As we age, our bodies become less efficient at utilizing protein, making it even more important to include a quality source of protein at every meal. Foods such as eggs, grass-fed beef, wild-caught fish, poultry, Greek yogurt, and other high-quality protein sources help support muscle maintenance and recovery

Strength training sends a signal to the body that muscle is needed. Whether using weights, resistance bands, bodyweight exercises, or machines, resistance training stimulates muscle growth, improves bone density, enhances balance, and helps maintain a healthy metabolism

When combined, adequate protein intake and consistent strength training create a powerful strategy for healthy aging They help preserve lean muscle, support a healthy weight, improve strength and mobility, and allow us to remain active and independent for years to come

Aging is inevitable, but losing strength and vitality doesn't have to be By prioritizing protein and making resistance training a regular part of life, you can support a stronger, healthier body at any age.

RECREATIONAL NEWS

A NOTE FROM YOUR DOCKMASTER

Old North State Marina hopes everyone is enjoying a wonderful summer on the lake As boating season is in full swing, now is a great time to ensure your vessel is properly maintained Whether you need repairs, maintenance, or replacement safety equipment, our team is here to help Please stop by the marina or call us at (336) 461-4456. Marina hours are Wednesday through Sunday from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

If you'd like to enjoy a day on the water without owning a boat, our rental boat is available for reservations. Please contact the marina for availability and booking information

Due to current lake conditions, the boat ramp remains closed. At the time of writing, the lake level is approximately 4.5 feet below normal pool. We will provide updates as conditions change and notify members when the ramp can safely reopen Lake level information is available through Cube Hydro's website, which updates hourly.

We encourage everyone to use extra caution while on the water, particularly around points, shallow areas, and marked hazards Staying within the main channels whenever possible is the best way to avoid submerged rocks and debris during periods of low water

We are excited to celebrate Independence Day with our annual fireworks display on July 3rd at dusk. We wish everyone a safe, enjoyable summer and look forward to seeing you at the marina
