CLUB UPDATE A NOTE FROM ROBERT LAMBERT YOUR CLUB MANAGER November is here! The fall foliage is starting to change colors and the weather is definitely cooling down.

There should still be some more beautiful days at the lake, so you can enjoy a few more rounds of golf, tennis, and pickleball.

The holidays will be here before you know it and may your holiday celebration be filled with fun, family time, and good health. You can enjoy the holidays and the traditions that they bring while creating memories here at the Water’s Edge on beautiful Smith Mountain Lake.

We realize that the holidays can be stressful and busy, so let our culinary staff help you with holiday cooking and baking. Please call us as you plan your holidays.

The staff and I would like to thank our wonderful members who support the Club each year. We appreciate all the feedback you provide us. So, if there is anything we can do to make your club experience better, please let us know. We look forward to seeing and serving you soon.

A NOTE FROM JOHN GUTHMANN YOUR HEAD TENNIS PROFESSIONAL Although summer is over, we will continue to have mixed doubles tennis throughout the fall on MondayWednesday-Friday at 9am.

Depending upon the weather, the soft courts will be playable until the first or second week of December. Contact me at 434-927-5039 for private lessons or racquet restringing.

A NOTE FROM JEFF SNYDER YOUR GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENT

It’s been a pretty decent fall here in southwest Va. Great golfing weather and the leaves are beginning to turn. Still have plenty of season left, so don’t put the clubs away. We’ve been busy. Fall aerification of greens and tees went well. We still plan on deep tine aerifying the fairways as well as punching the roughs. This will take place after the seeding has an opportunity to take hold. We have seeded all thin areas once, green surrounds twice, and if we need to hit them again, we will. Fall fertility has been applied and we got an excellent “bounce” in color and growth.

The “growth regulators” we use to slow the growth have stopped for the time being to allow the seed to do its thing. The grass is harder to keep up with, however the course will be better for it. Applications will continue once the seed is well established. We have also made multiple applications to our Bermuda grass in tees and fairways. This creates an ugly “off color” to “whitish appearance” in the Bermuda by design. The products used prevent the plant from photosynthesizing creating the look you see. If we can weaken the grass prior to dormancy, have a good cold winter, mother nature can help us speed up the eradication. There will be multiple apps in the spring, but we’re committed to stay on top on this.

This winter we have our regular tree plans. A handful to remove around the club and course, as well as planting a few where needed. Always looking for ways to improve playability, air movement, and obviously remove the dead or hazardous. Drainage is needed in some areas around the course and plans are being made. Water management continues to be a top priority. We would like to, in as many areas as we can, begin adding quick couplers around the course.

This will give us an opportunity to begin some hand watering in fairways.

CLUB UPDATE A NOTE FROM ED CURRIN YOUR GOLF PROFESSIONAL STAFF We would like to thank everyone for your support and cooperation in 2021. There have been a lot of changes at The Water’s Edge. We are the newest member of The McConnell Golf family. The fitness center has been updated and we are now undertaking a renovation in the Golf Shop. The projected completion date is the end of November. The Men’s lounge room will serve as our temporary Golf Shop, and yes the Ladies’ are allowed. Please excuse any inconvenience this might present. Fall is a beautiful time at Smith Mountain Lake so come and see us.

Men's Day will be Wednesday's at noon once the time changes.

CLUB UPDATE A NOTE FROM RUTH RICE YOUR MEMBER SERVICES DIRECTOR It's hard to believe that summer has come and gone. We are hoping for mild weather for the winter so that our members can continue to golf, play tennis and pickleball.

Some reminders: Per the rules and regulations, McConnell Golf does not waive the food minimum. We do offer a quarterly minimum of $250. This could be beneficial if you are only away a couple of months at a time.

Please notify the office of any changes regarding your membership: change of your residence, loss of your spouse, adding a significant other to your account, etc.

Welcome New Members

McConnell Golf takes a slightly different approach for the Employee Holiday Fund. Each member will be billed $50 on your October statement. You can elect to opt out or contribute more if you wish.Any adjustments would need to be submitted to me by November, 30, 2021.

COOL BRANCH FIRE AND RESCUE SQUAD COMMUNITY FUNDRAISER RESULTS At our 4th of July celebration, members at The Water’s Edge put in a tremendous effort to raise $36,780 for Cool Branch Volunteer Rescue Squad, Inc. McConnell Golf recently pledged to match up to $30,000, bringing the total number of funds raised to $66,780.

GOLF TOURNAMENT, LIVE & SILENT AUCTION The golf tournament, along with the live/silent auction and monetary donations provided $104,240 toward the goal of $230,000 .

Both fund raisers held at The Water's Edge generated $171,020! With the truck, tractor and gun raffle revenue, Cool Branch reached the goal of $230,000 in order to receive matching funds from Pittsylvania County.

Thanks to everyone who participated in this worthy cause.

THE EQUESTRIAN CENTER UPDATE A NOTE FROM SAMANTHA LESTER, THE EQUESTRIAN CENTER MANAGER Why did summer have to end so soon? We have had a great turnout at every event that was held at the barn. We enjoyed having everyone at the barn bingo games and movie night to cookouts and camp. I want to thank each of you for coming out and supporting the barn.

Things are going great and all of horses are doing well and have begun to grow their winter coats. Kristina and I have been busy getting ready for the colder months ahead. All of the horses will receive a fall wellness exam from the veterinarian along with fall vaccines and dental floats. Yes! Our horses get their teeth checked and floated on a regular basis. If anyone is interested in coming to watch the dental procedure, please let me know and I will give you the date and time. Depending on the severity of the horse’s teeth, a float usually takes 30-45 minutes, per horse.

Thank You to all of you that came out for Hummer’s retirement party. Hummer is doing well and there has not been a change in his arthritis, which is great. He is still in need of a walk during the day. If anyone would like to come spend time and walk him, please feel free and bring a friend!

Another Thank You shout out goes to Matthew Bassiur and his family for leasing Dixie over the summer months. Dixie and of course, Jenny too, loved all the visits and treats from Mr. Bassiur and his family. Along with leasing Dixie, Mr. Bassiur asked if he could contribute to the barn by paying for a 1 month lease for someone to come and enjoy the barn while he and his family were way for the winter months. This is such an awesome idea!!! It just so happened that I knew Rylee Smith, a 5th grader at Snow Creek Elementary School ,who has been looking for a barn to begin riding lessons along with wanting to learn how to properly care for horses. Kristina and I have had the pleasure spending time with Rylee and teaching her the basics. Rylee is a great rider and loves the horses. ** If there are any other members that would like to donate a 1 month lease, please call or email me. I would be happy to answer any questions. The barn is open daily. Please schedule a ride a day in advance. We look forward to seeing you.

Horses lose their teeth. Over the summer, Kristina and I have found 3 horse teeth lying in the pastures.

From Virginia Beach, Virginia, the Original Rhondels are a music tradition who have performed their hit recordings across the United States.In 1969, Bill Deal and the Rhondels began a recording career that would take them to Madison Square Garden and across the country. With three top 10 hits, May I, I’ve Been Hurt, and What Kind of Fool Do You Think I Am, the band hit the road, delighting their audiences with outstanding vocals, powerful brass, and exciting showmanship. These hits also topped the charts In Argentina, Spain, Brazil, Germany and Mexico.

Bill Deal’s passing was a sad and unexpected blow to the music industry. In spite of this, the band continues to perform around the country, traveling from Chicago to Bermuda, keeping alive the great music that earned them a star on the Legends Walk of Fame and an induction in the Rhythm and Blues Hall of Fame.

EMPLOYEE HOLIDAY FUND The past 20 months have been challenging in so many ways. On behalf of the McConnell Golf family and The Water's Edge Country Club, we would like to extend a big “Thank You” to all for your continued support. As in year’s past, we are asking you to join the holiday spirit and contribute to our Employee Holiday Fund. Contributing to the fund is a thoughtful way to show your appreciation to our heroes – our awesome staff who have truly excelled during these unprecedented times! This includes our staff members from the front of the house to the back of the house, and all those helping hands who work behind-the-scenes. Thank you.

While contributing to the fund is voluntary, adjustments to the fund received by November 30, 2021 will be reflected on your December statement. The contribution will then be distributed among all of The Water's Edge Country Club employees throughout all departments.

SAVE THE POLAR BEARS - WOLD WILDLIFE FUND We’re freezin’ for a reason! Come bear the cold with us this January as

we host the McConnell Golf Polar Bear Plunge - a fundraising event in which individuals raise or make a donation for the chance to plunge into their home club's pool. This fun-filled event is in support of the World Wildlife Fund who helps save endangered polar bears. Since The Water's Edge Country Club's pool will be closed over the winter, we will be holding our own fundraising event. More details coming soon!

SNOWBALL COOKIES

This cookie has been one of my own favorites to buy (Famous Amos) molasses cookies. My very first job was working at Piggly Wiggly where a portion of my check went to buying cookies. Also, the taste of them reminds me of time spent with my father as we would eat them often after dinner or for a snack!

Ingredients: 2 1/4 Cups All-Purpose Flour (spoon & leveled) 1 ½ TSP Baking Soda 2 TSP Ground Ginger 1 ¼ TSP Ground Cinnamon 1/4 TSP Ground Cloves 1/4 TSP Nutmeg 1/4 TSP Salt 3/4 Cup Unsalted Butter, softened to room temperature 1/2 Cup packed Light or Dark Brown Sugar 1/4 Cup Granulated Sugar 1/4 Cup Unsulfured or Dark Molasses 1 Large Egg, at room temperature 2 TSP Pure Vanilla Extract 1/3 Cup Granulated or Coarse Sugar, for rolling Directions: Whisk the flour, baking soda, ginger, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, and salt together until combined. Set aside.

In a large bowl using a hand-held or stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment, beat the butter and both sugars together on high speed until creamy and combined, about two minutes. Add the molasses and beat until combined. Then add the egg and vanilla extract and beat until combined, about one minute. Scrape down the sides and bottom of the bowl as needed.

On low speed, slowly mix the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients until combined.

The cookie dough will be slightly sticky. Cover dough tightly with aluminum foil or plastic wrap and chill for one hour and up to two to three days.

Preheat oven to 350°F. Line two large baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone baking mats. Set aside (Always recommended for cookies).

Remove cookie dough from the refrigerator. If the cookie dough is chilled longer than two hours, let it sit at room temperature for at least 30 minutes. The cookies may not spread in the oven if the dough is too cold. Roll cookie dough, one tablespoon each, into balls. Roll each in granulated sugar and arrange three inches apart on the baking sheets. Bake for 11 to 12 minutes or until edges appear set. If the tops aren’t appearing cracked as pictured, remove the baking sheet from the oven and gently bang it on the counter two to three times. This will help the warm cookies spread out and crack on top. Return to the oven for one additional minute.

I look forward to the holidays every year when my neighbor brings over a tin of treats for my family. These snowball cookies are the first ones to disappear!

Yield: 4 Dozen Cookies Ingredients: 1 Cup Unsalted Butter 2 TSP Vanilla Extract 1/3 Cup Sugar 2 TSP Water 2 Cups sifted All-Purpose Flour 1 ¼ TSP Salt 1 Cup Chopped Pecans 2 Cups Powdered Sugar Directions: Preheat oven to 325°F. In a large mixing bowl, cream butter, vanilla, and sugar.

Creaming the mixture until light and fluffy. Blend in water.

Gradually add in and combine flour and salt, and beat until well blended. Add the pecans.

Shape into one inch balls. Place balls at least one inch apart onto a non-stick cookie sheet.

Bake for 15 to 18 minutes, or until firm to touch.

While cookies are warm, roll in powdered sugar. Cool on racks for a few minutes.

Roll cookies again in powdered sugar. Store in a sealed container up to one week.

Remove from the oven and allow cookies to cool on the baking sheet for five minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

Cookies will stay fresh covered at room temperature for one week.
