The golf course has recovered quickly from the dog days of summer and is looking great. It has also benefited from the ABW treatments throughout the summer. Although the mowers will be idle for most of the winter, Jeff Snyder and the agronomy team will be busy with their winter projects. The golf course will be in great shape as we begin our golf season in the spring. On behalf of McConnell Golf and The Water’s Edge staff, I want to give a special thank you to all the members who made 2023 a successful year. I cannot tell you enough how much we all appreciate your continued support. On that note, your input is very important to us. Please let us know how we can make your club experience better. Adventure John Guthmann, our tennis pro, recently completed a tall task by hiking to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania— the highest mountain in Africa and the tallest free-standing mountain in the world! John even completed this journey with the Water’s Edge pin flag in tow.

On the green, never stand close to the hole or on the extended line of the person putting on the green. On full shots, it’s usually best to stand to the front side of the person playing and slightly behind the ball. 4. Push/pull carts should never be taken on top of a tee box, should never be any closer than 10 yards from a green. So that means they should never be on a collar or go between a greenside bunker and the green. 5. Always remember to replace your divots or fill with sand, rake your bunker and repair ball marks. 6. Only two people shall ride in the golf cart.

Lessons are always available during the winter months for anyone looking for professional guidance on fine tuning your swing! COURSE NEWS Course Update JEFF SNYDER, GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENT
How about that December bonus golf!! At this writing, pushing 60 and Dec. 9th 65ish. Pretty crazy warm dry weather we’ve been having as of late. Lake is down 2 feet and the lowest down 3+.. Golf has been steady and keeping up with leaves has been our biggest challenge. We ended 2023 deep tinning the fairways and the course is in good shape going into the winter. Topdressing fairways will again happen this off season and continue during the golfing season. This will help with our soil and firmness. This fall, we did quite a bit of sodding on 1,3,4,17, and 18. We are utilizing the nursery right of 11 to plug areas around the course. The grass will spread and fill these areas in time. We have many other plans this off-season to keep the property heading in a positive direction. The large tree to the left of 9 green is to be removed—it is dying and it is time. Other dead trees throughout the property will be removed. I will be working with the agronomy director on a tree removal plan. Sunlight and air movement is essential to turf health. Over the years some holes, mostly on the front nine, have just gotten overgrown. The 1st green this time of year doesn’t see the sun till after 10:00. The morning sun is the best for the turf. These holes need to be opened up while not damaging the playability of the hole. Sprinkler heads will be addressed, many need leveling. Water management is still our highest priority, the topdressing and quick couplers will be a big help. We will be changing our wetting agent products this coming year. New chemistry and more acreage to improve water infiltration and playability. As we move into the winter, obviously the grass slows to a crawl. Please take the extra time to replace divots and sand the balance if any. Also, the greens can get firm and ball marks become harder to find. Take that extra time to please fix yours and one other. These little things can help us come out of the winter in great shape. Hope you all had a great holiday and thanks for everyone’s help and support!!
WHY CAN’T WE PLAY ON FROZEN GREENS When a green freezes, the plant and underlying soil becomes one hard unit. As the sun warms the green, it begins to thaw from the surface. This is a very critical time because the upper portion containing plants and roots has thawed and the lower portion containing the root mass is still frozen. At this time, any movement on the green (golf play) severs the roots from the plant. The damage that occurs leaves the plant with a short root system that will take several months to grow back. In the winter, when the soil temperatures are below 50 degrees, the roots grow very little. Therefore, any repair to the damaged roots will not be until spring, instead of adding onto the root depth established in the fall these areas will be starting over. They will be limited in root mass and more susceptible to the stresses of summer. For this reason, we do not allow any play until the greens are completely thawed. Depending on the depth of which the greens are frozen, they will need several days of sun and warm temperatures to completely thaw. By allowing the thawing process to take place, we eliminate the damage that would occur. The stronger the root system gives the plant a great opportunity to survive the stresses of heat and disease in the spring and summer that results in healthier greens.

EQUESTRIAN CENTER NEWS Barn Update KRISTINA WRAY, EQUESTRIAN CENTER MANAGER
Hi everyone! We hope you all enjoyed the holiday season! The horses are enjoying their heated water tubs, blankets, and their bountiful feeding schedules. This time of year is crucial that we maintain their weight and continue their exercise regimens. Although we are less busy with rides in the winter, keeping them in shape helps them retain heat during the cold nights. Russell and Bear also have their warm beds set and ready to go. Russell has his own heat lamp and Bear has a fluffy bed in the hay loft. Even though Bear has his bed he enjoys being in the office during the day snuggled up in one of our jackets. Our holiday season has been busier this past year. We had an amazing turn out for our Fall Kids Camp. The kids all enjoyed riding, making Christmas ornaments, playing games, and eating pizza. We even added a Christmas event. The kids wrote letters to Santa and were surprised that he made an appearance himself to pick them up. We are excited to bring new fun and fresh activities to this year's calendar. So be on the lookout for those dates! This year's Summer Camp dates are set as well. It's never too early to sign up! We would like to thank everyone who has supported us this year. We truly appreciate you all and we look forward to seeing you all again this year.

FITNESS NEWS Head Tennis Professional Regularly scheduled tennis and pickleball activities have concluded, but the hard tennis courts and pickleball courts are available to members and guests all winter, weather permitting. Next spring, we look forward to resurfacing the Har-Tru courts. April 15th is the projected kick-off date for the 2024 season of play. Patricia Newby joined our team at The Water's Edge 21 years ago. She was voted Employee of the Month for November 2023. Patricia previously worked in a sewing factory before she came to work at The Water’s Edge. She cleans houses on the side in her spare time and enjoys spending time with her grandkids and her two dogs.

We would like to thank everyone who contributed to making the toy drive so successful! We had a pickup truck bed full! This toy drive is a great way for all of us to give back and support disadvantaged families in Franklin County.
We hope that everyone was able to come to the club
Employee of the Month: December 2023 Victoria James has been working at the equestrian center since February of 2023. She recently was promoted to assistant manager in the fall and has spent many years volunteering at the barn in her younger years. She has been around horses all of her life. She enjoys her job as it is a life passion of hers. She especially enjoys giving lessons and being able to share her knowledge and experience with others. Outside of work she loves reading, spending time with her family and her dogs.

JANUARY COOKIE OF THE MONTH
Gingersnap Cookie Recipe
Recipe by Lynn Hart
When I was 37 years old, I went back to school to get a culinary degree. This was one of the first things I baked at Trails End. More than twenty-five years later, it is still one of my favorite cookie recipes. Whenever I make them, I think of Gary Henz and the incredible opportunities I have received because of the strong foundation he laid for me.
Ingredients
4 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 4 teaspoons baking soda 1 teaspoon ground ginger 1 teaspoon salt 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon 2 cups granulated sugar (additional sugar will be needed for rolling) 1 1/2 cups vegetable oil 2 eggs 1/2 cup molasses
Directions
1. Sift the flour, baking soda, ground ginger, salt, and ground cinnamon together. 2. Use a paddle blade on your mixer and mix the sugar and vegetable oil together for 1 minute. 3. Add one egg at a time followed by the molasses. Mix this together for 1 minute. 4. Fold in the sifted dry ingredients a little at a time until it is well blended. This should take about two more minutes for the proper mixing. 5. Chill the dough for at least an hour before you scoop them. 6. Peanut Butter Heart Cookie Recipe

Reese’s cups have always held a special place in my heart. It’s one of those things that when I eat them, they teleport me through many happy memories. One of which involved my grandmother giving me my first one when I was a child. Since then, they have always made me think of her. This is where my love for peanut butter and chocolate are able to come together, as I’ve created a peanut butter press cookie with a Reese’s cup melted in the center. Who doesn’t love these two ingredients together? And as she would say, “bless your heart.”

1/4 cup unsalted butter 1/4 cup vegetable shortening 1/2 cup creamy peanut butter 1 cup granulated sugar, divided 1/2 cup light brown sugar, packed 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 Large eggs 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking soda 1/4 teaspoon salt 12-ounce package Reese's Peanut Butter Hearts
1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees. 2. In a mixing bowl; cream together butter, shortening, peanut butter, ½ cup granulated sugar, and brown sugar until light and fluffy, about 2 minutes. 3. Add in eggs, mixing after each addition. Mix in the vanilla. 4. In a separate bowl whisk together flour, baking soda, and salt. 5. Stir dry ingredients into the wet ingredients and mix gently to combine. Don’t over-mix. The dough will be very soft. 6. Pour remaining 1/2 cup of granulated sugar into a small bowl. Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper. 7. Scoop dough into balls and then roll in sugar. 8. Bake for 7-10 minutes, just until set. They will be pale, and look just barely set. Don’t over-bake them or they will be hard once cooled. 9. Remove from oven and allow to cool on baking sheet for 2-3 minutes, and then transfer to cooling rack. 10. Press an unwrapped Reese’s heart to the center of each warm cookie. Allow cookies to cool completely. 11. Store leftover cookies in a container at room temperature, or they freeze very well.
