PORTERS NECK COUNTRY CLUB

Club News Porters Neck Assistant Golf Pro, Dana Kovich, took a group of members to visit two sister McConnell Golf properties on a 'Fall Field Trip'. The first was The Country Club of Asheville, located in Asheville, NC. The second was Holston Hills Country Club, located in Knoxville, TN.

Congratulations to Jacob Garner on his hole-in-one at the McConnell Golf Ryder Cup! The 2023 Ryder Cup was held at our sister McConnell Golf property, The Reserve Golf Club, located in Pawleys Island, South Carolina.

This fun group included: Margaret Meadows, Dana Kovich, Jeannie Cannon, Peggy Cahill, Louise Hemmerle, David Meadows, Jim O’Neil, Larry Cheng, Ron Cannon, Basil Verlangieri.

Road Tripping with Members!

Congratulations to Jerry Horton on his recent hole in one! Stats: Hole 11, 125 yards, 9 iron. This is his third hole in one on that hole and 5th overall at Porters Neck. His 8th total! However, he said that a bigger deal to him is that he finished in 3rd place in the Carolinas Golf Association, Super Seniors in Mooresville 9/6-7. Porters Neck had the highest finish of all clubs in Wilmington.

Deborah Scuorza was recently recognized as our Employee of the Month! Known to most of us as ‘Super Deb’, she has served as our Banquet Captain for almost 17 years. We appreciate you, Super Deb, and your fierce dedication to Porters Neck. POST | CLUB NEWS

McConnell Scholar Congratulations to Aiden McDonough for being awarded Porters Neck’s first MCG Golf Scholarship. Aiden is a freshman at Wilmington Christian Academy and has played on their Varsity golf team since he was in 6th grade.

PN Interclub Team Makes Final Four!

Aiden also plays on the Varsity soccer and basketball teams. While Aiden is a well-rounded athlete and an Honor Roll student, golf is his passion, and he looks forward to improving his game here at PN. We hope to see a lot of him over the next few years. Below is an explanation of what the MCG Scholarship is about.

The Porters Neck Interclub team, Regular Division, made it all the way to the final four teams out of 106 teams across NC and SC during the regular season and then advanced through a field of 68 in the playoffs.

McConnell Golf (MCG) is dedicated to amateur and junior golf. To demonstrate this commitment, the company launched the MCG High School Golf Scholarship Program in 2008. Many talented young golfers often have no quality courses or practice facilities that they can utilize. Membership to most private courses is out of reach for the parents of some of these very talented young golfers, leaving only crowded public courses and often-inadequate practice facilities.

This was the first year for PNCC to compete in the regular division that allows players under 55 to participate. "We faced a tough team in Sapona CC and lost our semifinal match. I'll drop off the silver Platter to be displayed at the club."

Players pictured in Photo from left to right: Garret Grove, Jeff Taweel, Jerry Horton, Team Captain-Brandon Belisle, Gary Howze, Tom Babel, Tim Eldridge & Greg Mitchell. Other players who particpated and made up the team: Co-Captain Jamie D'alessandro, Chris Smith, Jacob Garner, Brian Schroeder, Rob Parker, Jeremy Wilson, Troy DeSelms, Phil Mabe, Paul Chase, Daryl McCarthy, Bill Morrison, Jim Lazour, Travis Braxton, Phil Moran and David Buckner.

The driving force behind the McConnell Golf High School Golf Scholarship Program is to afford an opportunity to these high school golfers by allowing them to become members of a McConnell Golf property or club. With the ability to enjoy first-rate golf facilities, MCG hopes these high school golfers will have the ability to elevate their game. Currently, McConnell Golf owns fourteen private, top-quality golf courses in the Carolinas, Tennessee and Virginia with each property having first class practice facilities. POST | CLUB NEWS

26th Annual Ebeneezer Charity Golf Tournament

December, 1998 In 1998, Porters Neck members Rick Batchelor and Ebeneezer (Ebb) Wilkinson, pictured in the red hat, decided to host the very first Ebeneezer golf tournament. For the first 10 to 12 years, it was an invitation only event. Members would host various ‘stops’ along the golf course with warm clam chowder and bloody mary’s. The event became so popular that it became an official club event, spear headed by PNCC member, Jim Daly and a planning comittee.

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 8TH & SATURDAY, DECEMBER 9TH While the format, fun, and festive gear remained pretty much the same, the members soon decided to make this a charity event. Over the past 8 years, the Ebeneezer has generated over $70,000 for various charities like the Boys and Girls Club, Assistance League, Semper Fi Fund, Good Sheperd and Paws4people. This year, we will be opening the Annual Ebeneezer to all PNCC Golf members as well as those on the Golf Waiting List. This is a fun event with a worthy cause! Paws4people, which is our charity for the 2023 event, provides high qualified assistance dogs for people with both visible and invisible needs, including veterans and children. Paws4people will be joining us Saturday morning, with several of their service dogs and puppies in training, between 9AM and 10 AM. The entry fee is $125 per person and includes: cart fee, lunch, free beer on the golf course, 2 drink tickets, prizes, tee gifts, and a $50 donation to paws4people. Register online or by calling the Pro Shop at 910-686-1177.

Player’s Draw Party | Friday December 8th Festivities start with a draw party in the PNCC Ballroom at 5:00PM on Friday, December 8th for the players only. We will place all of the “A” player’s names on a board and then draw names based on their “B, C or D” designations. When your name is drawn, players can then choose the team they wish to play on. If a player is not present, that name will be set aside and placed on a team once the draw is finished. After teams are drawn, the “A” players will then choose their starting hole. Past starting holes have been very good indications of finishing positions and potential winners. We supply the food, and you purchase your favorite beverage.

Golf | Saturday, December 9th Participants will meet at 8:00AM on Saturday, December 9th to get in the spirit of the EBENEEZER. Bloody Marys and breakfast sandwiches are available for purchase. Golf on Saturday is a 10:00 AM Shotgun Start.

Format

1st 6 Holes: 2 Net from the Blue tees 2nd 6 Holes: 3 Net from the White tees 3rd 6 Holes: 4 Net from the Red tees

PACE OF PLAY

Please remember our pace of play time is 4 hrs. and 8 minutes for 18 holes. Here are a few hints to help your groups with pace of play: New Golfers or high handicaps players should use the forward tees. Minimize practice swings. Put a ball mark repair tool, two ball makers and tees into your pocket at the first tee.

Allow faster groups to play through Take the divot bottle that is on the cart, to your next shot so that you do not have to go back for it after the shot. Carry a spare ball in your pocket so that you do not have to go back to your bag when you need to hit a provisional ball. Take more than one club to your next shot. If you are the cart driver, drop off your passenger at their ball before proceeding to your own ball.

POST | GOLF

If you are the passenger, take more than one club to your shot and proceed down the fairway after your shot. Do not wait for the driver to pick you up. When in doubt hit a provisional ball. Eliminate the need to go back to where you hit your last shot. Limit your search for a lost ball to three minutes. If your next shot is with your pitching wedge or sand wedge, automatically take your putter with you. Park golf carts to the side or behind the green so that when you finish putting you will be moving away from the field of play and towards the next tee. Study your line of putt while others are putting. Continue putting until your ball is holed. If you are the first in the cup, pick up the flagstick so that you can replace it after the last person has putted out. Mark scorecards on the next tee box, not on or next to the putting green. On shots where players who cannot reach the green should hit when ready. Always keep up with the group ahead of you.
