“The best part of this game isn’t the score it’s the time spent with friends along the way ”

Beautiful spring weather has set us up for a great summer golfing season We could have used a little more rain, but overall, the weather was fantastic for the spring green-up on the golf course. Having very healthy greens coming out of the winter allowed us to keep them better regulated, and cut tight earlier in the year. We were able to have some of the best spring green speeds we have seen in the past 5 years.

Without fail, as soon as they are really firm, fast, and looking good, it is time to put holes in them Aeration seems like such a brutal act to inflict on a great putting surface, but as we all know, it is a necessary evil Aeration promotes root growth, allows for gas exchange in the root zone, and relieves compaction All of these processes are essential for healthy turf Healthy turf is what allows us to have highly regulated greens, cut tight, to produce the quality putting surface you all know and love One is not possible without the other

One other essential factor to healthy turf is sunlight. We were able to address the lack of sunlight on tee boxes on number 16 by removing the row of trees between the tees and the railroad tracks. This should allow the grass to grow more vigorously during the summer months, and promote turf health in the dormant period throughout late fall and winter Several other trees were removed around the golf course as well, due to poor tree health

Water is another factor critical to turf health Too little, or too much, and the grass is not happy One area where we saw way too much water was the area between 14 tee and 14 fairway. It has been very wet for the better part of a year. We attributed this to the natural spring we know to exist on the west side of the cart path. What we did not realize, was the spring was getting some help from a very small leak in one of our irrigation pipes. The leak eventually progressed to the point it became visible on the soil surface. We promptly repaired the leak, and the turf has responded well Sometimes you don’t know until you know The good news is, until a significant rain event, that area should now be passable for foot and cart traffic

We are looking forward to a great summer, with shorter rough heights, fast and firm greens, and some healthy turf to enjoy all summer. Hopefully we have beautiful days ahead to play golf and enjoy time with friends and family!

Yours in turf,

MCCONNELL GOLF COURSES EARN STRONG GAINS IN 2026 N.C. GOLF PANEL RANKINGS

McConnell Golf once again placed all of its North Carolina private clubs among the state’s Top 100 courses, highlighted by four clubs earning Top 25 rankings in the North Carolina Golf Panel’s 30th annual statewide rankings, published in the April issue of Business North Carolina magazine

Leading the portfolio is Greensboro’s Sedgefield Country Club, home of the PGA TOUR’s Wyndham Championship, ranked No 7 in North Carolina Old North State Club in New London followed at No 11, while Raleigh Country Club climbed to No 15 Durham’s Treyburn Country Club made one of the year’s biggest moves, jumping four spots into the Top 25 at No 25 In total, 11 McConnell Golf courses earned Top 100 recognition statewide, marking a strong year of upward momentum across the company’s North Carolina portfolio

Several Triangle-area clubs posted notable improvements. The Country Club at Wakefield Plantation in Raleigh made a significant leap, rising to No. 75 from No. 94 last year. Treyburn’s move into the Top 25 further strengthened the region’s standing among the state’s premier courses. Eastern North Carolina also saw major gains, as Wilson Country Club surged into the Top 100 at No. 84 after being unranked last year one of the largest upward moves in this year’s rankings

Other McConnell Golf properties earning Top 100 honors include:

Country Club of Asheville, ranked No 52, up two spots year-over-year

The Cardinal by Pete Dye in Greensboro, ranked No 54, continuing its steady upward trend

MAY COOKIE OF THE MONTH: PISTACHIO COOKIE RECIPE

“I love Pistachio as much as I love cookies The pistachio is the well-traveled, smart & cool nut that sits in the back of the class, quiet and barely noticed He doesnt require too much attention like the fancy Almond. He doesn't have the thick Southern accent like the pecan, nor is he hard to crack and most desirable by squirrels like the walnut. The pistachio is calm and collected in all scenarios, naturally green, and widely known to have a variety of health benefits, such as healthy fats, fiber, and protein Unlike all the other nuts in the class, he also comes with a reputation of paramount street cred

Pistachio originated in the Middle East over 10,000 years ago and spread globally through trade routes, reaching Ancient Greece and Rome before being introduced to Europe and later the United States. The pistachio has been valued in ancient civilizations for its flavor and medicinal properties, becoming a luxury item for the elite and a staple for travelers. Oftentimes, the other nuts can be very jealous of this, but pistachios (as legend has it) were a favorite of the Queen of Sheba, who demanded that all of her land's production be for her and her court Brazil nuts, macadamias, and cashews can pick and tease all they want, but there's no question that Alexander the Great introduced pistachios to Greece, and the Roman Emperor Tiberius later brought them to Italy and Spain The state of California produces 99% of the nations pistachios, generating nearly $3 billion in economic value in the state

All of this, yet the pistachio is humble and quiet truly the cool kid Its no surprise that this makes the best ice cream flavor known to humankind A chef's nut: that goes with everything, adding the savory crunch in Bacon Jam on the pan-roasted Duck Breast or the perfect salty bite atop sweet Crème Brûlée Don't worry about what the other nuts say; keep being a legend, Pistachio, and know that we appreciate you!” - Mike Moore

Ingredients:

1 Cup Shelled Pistachio Nuts

½

1

Directions:

1 Preheat oven to 350 degrees

2.Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and spray with nonstick pan spray

3 In a food processor, chop all Pistachios until they are a fine crumb Reserve 1 tablespoon for topping if desired

4 In a mixing bowl, beat sugar and egg until fluffy

5.Add butter (cut in small pieces) and extracts

6 Pour in chopped Pistachios, flour and baking powder and mix until well combined

7 Using a small 3oz scoop, add dough in scoops onto greased baking sheet and top with remaining pistachio crumb

8 Bake for 10-12 minutes @ 350-degrees Fahrenheit until brown

9 Allow cookies to cool and remove onto cooling rack

JUNE COOKIE OF THE MONTH: PB&J COOKIE RECIPE

”As a chef and a father, I refused to let my kid have a limited palate As long as she tried at least three bites of any food I put in front of her to give her palate time to adjust, I would believe her if she did or didn’t like something. This for the most part has worked out well, and she eats all kinds of foods now One thing she never liked was jelly or jam A kid that won’t eat the classic PB&J? I tried so many things to get her to try jams in different ways. This cookie was one of those ways. A little extra sweetness in a peanut butter cookie. I enjoyed them a lot and held onto the recipe, my kid Well, she still hates jellies and jams ” - Sean O’Neill

Ingredients:

1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour

1/2 tsp baking soda

1/2 tsp kosher salt

1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened

1/2 cup creamy peanut butter

Directions:

1/2 cup light brown sugar

1/4 cup granulated sugar

1 large egg

1 tsp pure vanilla extract

1/2 cup jam, such as strawberry or raspberry

1 In a medium bowl, whisk flour, baking soda, and salt until combined In a large bowl, using a handheld mixer on medium-high speed, beat butter and peanut butter until smooth Add brown sugar and granulated sugar and beat until creamy Add egg and vanilla and beat until combined Add dry ingredients and beat on medium speed until just combined

2 Using a medium (about 2 tablespoons) cookie scoop, scoop out dough Press your thumb into the center to create a deep hole Spoon 1 scant teaspoon jam into hole Gently press dough back together and roll into a ball; the jam might start leaking out, and that’s okay Arrange on 2 parchment-lined baking sheets, spacing 2" apart

3 Refrigerate until chilled, about 30 minutes

4 Preheat conventional oven to 350° or convection oven with low fan to 325° Bake cookies until edges are just set and centers are slightly soft, about 12 minutes.
