Joe and Cheryl Gross, Resident Full Golf. Joe recently retired from his career as a Retail Executive and has transitioned well to the active but slower pace of a retiree. Cheryl is still working as a government paralegal these days, but she is looking forward to joining Joe in retirement a few years from now. Born and raised in the Chicago suburbs, Joe and Cheryl (and their furry family member, rescue cocker spaniel ‘Bandon’) are excited to have achieved their long-term goal to live and retire in the mountains of Asheville. Joe is an avid golfer and a former member of ‘The Bog’ (Arnold Palmer Design) in Wisconsin, and both Joe and Cheryl enjoy exploring the food and art scene in Asheville and the surrounding mountain towns. They have two children; a son, Harrison, age 3 years, and a daughter, Lucy, age 8 months. The Hennings are interested in swim and tennis lessons for the children, meeting members of the community, and networking among the professional community. They are previous members of the club and look forward to reacquainting themselves with the club and enjoying the social and sports activities with the children. Dr. Rob and Lee Merrill, Sport. After practicing dentistry in Asheville for 40 years, Rob is now semi-retired (Robert L. Merrill, Jr., DDS PA). Lee plays social and USTA tennis and both have recently discovered pickleball. The Merrills raised three children in Asheville, Chris, Jacqui, and Jessica. Reminders...

Below are a few things to always keep in mind regarding golf operations and some of the things we like to remind you.

A proper dress code for both the course & practice facility is required.

Check-in prior to your round with the Golf Shop, especially if you have guests.

Continue to repair your ball marks & replace your divots.

While we prefer a 4 hour & 15-minute pace of play if you can go faster, do so.

Please observe any & all cart restrictions that are posted daily on the tee sheet & pin sheet.

Personal coolers are prohibited.

The course & practice facility is CLOSED on I don’t know about you all but I am ready for some cooler temperatures and no more afternoon thunderstorms. As we work our way out of the heat of summer and into the fall, I want to remind everyone that our course aerification will be Tuesday – Friday the week of Labor Day. Those dates are September 7th through the 10th which is a bit later this year due to Labor Day falling so late. This process is never fun for any golf course but has to be done in order to keep healthy green complexes and course conditions.

The healing process usually takes about two to three weeks so I would remind you that as we work our way through this process, it is probably not the best time to entertain guests here at the club but is a great opportunity to maybe plan a trip or two to our other McConnell Golf Properties and see what all they have to offer. Should you have guests already scheduled to come, we will only charge the family guest rate all month while course conditions are not at a premium. While the course is closed for aerification, the Golf Shop hours will be as follows: Tuesday & Wednesday: Closed, Practice Facility Closed Thursday & Friday: Open from 9:00am to 3:00pm, Practice Facility Open from 12:00pm to 6:00pm This past August, some of our ladies and Assistant Professional Brian Muller competed in the annual McConnell Golf Solheim Cup over at Brook Valley in Greenville, NC. Our ladies represented the club well and finished 4th out of the 10 clubs that participated. Great job ladies & Brian!! Congratulations are also in order for Jessica Dickenson, who is our 2021 Ladies’ Club Champion. We will be conducting our Couples’, Senior, and Men’s Club Championship throughout August and early September and will have those results posted at the conclusion of those events.

COURTSIDE NEWS It has been an amazing summer with lots of activity at the courts and I hope to carry over that excitement to the fall. Lots of tennis options are available to please check with Bill about getting you joined up with the right group or come out for some clinics or lessons to get back into the game. After school junior clinics have started so please check with the shop about which day or time is best for your child.

The indoor courts just finished being resurfaced and look great. We have added pickleball lines for 6 courts after we removed the 10 and under blue lines. We will be hosting some pickleball tournaments this fall and winter so be on the lookout for those dates.

Summer Camps went great and we saw some great tennis at the courts this summer. It was a lot of fun and we can’t wait for next summer. Thank you all for sending your kids to the club for our camps, there are lots of choices out there and we really appreciate the support. I look forward to carrying over the summer success with lots more tennis this fall in the after-school classes.

Tennis classes started on August 30th and will continue outdoors until the end of November when we will move indoors.

Classes are $15/hr, please let Bill know which day(s) you will be coming to make sure we spread out enough over the week. We have 2 courts going and will spread the kids out based on level and age. You can also register using the online event calendar.

Soccer Shots is an engaging children’s soccer program with a focus on character development. Our expert-approved curriculum is age-appropriate and aligns with childhood education standards. Find your tribe here at CCA with our Age-Based Play Groups! This is a great opportunity to meet other moms with kids around the same ages as yours, and build a sense of community here at the club. Led by one of our experienced activity leaders, each session will feature Waldorf and/or Montessori-inspired, child-led activities with a different focus each week.

MCCONNELL GOLF NEWS His top 30 effort earned him a check for $41,013 and a spot in the Korn Ferry Tour Finals, the three-event series that determines PGA Tour eligibility for the 2021-22 season. Smalley has made the cut in all five of his PGA Tour starts and earned enough FedExCup points to finish inside the top-200 and qualify for the Korn Ferry playoffs.

Smalley joined Sedgefield in June of 2020 and estimates he has played 75 rounds or more on the classic Donald Ross design. “I feel pretty comfortable with the lines on each hole,” he said during the week. “The course is always in really good shape. It’s playing a little different than it usually does for us. There’s a little more runout in the fairways, which has changed a couple of the clubs that I hit off of the tee. The greens are a little quicker, but other than that, it’s the same golf course.”

KEVIN KISNER WINS WILD 6-MAN PLAYOFF AT THE WYNDHAM CHAMPIONSHIP Kevin Kisner birdied the second extra hole to end a six-man playoff and capture a thrilling 2021 Wyndham Championship at Greensboro’s Sedgefield Country Club.

Known as a dogged match-play competitor, Kisner stiffed his approach shot on 18 and calmly rolled in a 3-foot putt. For the victory — the fourth of his career and first since 2019 — the former University of Georgia Bulldog banked $1,152,000.

Smalley enjoyed plenty of local support during the week. Along with his father and his mother, Maria — both of whom have caddied for Smalley throughout his career — his sister, Katie, and numerous friends and playing partners from Sedgefield followed his group and rooted him on.

“It was nice to hear their cheers out there,” Smalley said. “I don’t get to play in front of a whole lot of people very often. It’s pretty cool to have people scream at you after you make a putt. To have an opportunity to play a PGA Tour event on your home course is pretty special. I think it helped me out quite a bit. I know my way around. I’ve played out here numerous times, so I felt comfortable on the course. To have that finish was pretty cool.”

Adam Scott shot 65 in the final round to make the playoff. He had a chance for victory on the first playoff hole, but his 4-foot birdie putt never threatened the cup. Kisner and Scott were joined in the playoff by former champion Si Woo Kim, Braden Grace, Kevin Na and Roger Sloan.

It marked just the third time in PGA Tour history that six golfers have gone to a playoff.

Kisner began Sunday’s final round four shots behind leader Russell Henley, but he birdied Nos. 16 and 17, eventually shooting 66 to reach 15 under and the playoff.

“My first playoff win,” said Kisner, who was previously 0-5 in playoffs prior to his Wyndham title. “To be standing here is pretty sweet.”

Henley held the lead after the first three rounds. He recovered from a slow start on Sunday to reach 17-under after a birdie on the 10th hole, but the Georgia Bulldog bogeyed three of the next four holes and came to the 72nd hole needing par to stay at 15 under. He fell short of the playoff after narrowly missing a 5-foot par putt. It proved a brutal ending to what had been an otherwise amazing performance from Henley.

McConnell Golf member Alex Smalley didn’t quite play his way into the six-man playoff, but the former Duke University star gained plenty more along the way. Playing on his home course, Sedgefield CC, the 24-yearold Smalley carded three rounds in the 60s, including a sizzling 64 on Friday. He responded to the heat of Sunday’s final-round pressure in equally torrid fashion, finishing his day with three straight birdies and a 4under 66.

In just his fifth PGA Tour event, playing on a sponsor’s exemption in a fullfield event on the last weekend of the PGA Tour regular season, Smalley finished at 10-under par and tied for 29th.

SEPTEMBER: PB&J Crumble Cookies Sean O’Neill - Treyburn Country Club INGREDIENTS: 1 Large Egg Cooking spray or butter 1 TSP Vanilla Extract 2 Cups All-Purpose Flour 1 1/2 Cups Concord Grape Jelly ½ TSP Baking Powder 2/3 Cup Coarsely Chopped Salted, ½ TSP Fine Salt 12 TBSP Unsalted Butter, room temp Roasted Peanuts (Optional) 1 1/3 Cups Granulated Sugar 1 1/3 Cups Natural Creamy Peanut Butter (no sugar added)

DIRECTIONS: 1. Arrange a rack in the middle of a convection oven and heat to 325°F on a low fan. Line the sides and bottom of a half hotel pan with aluminum foil, then coat the foil with cooking spray or butter; set aside.

2. Whisk the flour, baking powder, and salt together in a medium bowl; set aside.

3. Place the butter and sugar in the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment. Beat on low speed until combined, then increase the speed to medium-high and beat until creamed. Stop the mixer and scrape down the sides and paddle with a rubber spatula.

4. Add the peanut butter and beat on medium-high speed until combined. Add the egg and vanilla and continue to beat until completely combined. Stop the mixer and scrape down again.

5. Return the mixer to low speed and gradually add the flour mixture, stopping when the flour is almost incorporated (do not over mix). Remove the bowl from the mixer and fold in the remaining flour by hand with the rubber spatula.

6. Sprinkle 1/2 of the mixture in the baking pan and press into an even layer. Bake until the top is light golden-brown, 15 to 20 minutes.

7. Dollop the jelly over the crust and spread it into an even layer as best as you can without disturbing the crust. (Don’t worry if the jelly doesn't spread much, it will melt in the oven.) Sprinkle evenly with the chopped peanuts, if using. Using your hands, crumble the remaining dough into pieces about the size of almonds and sprinkle evenly into the pan.

8. Return the pan to the oven and bake until the top is golden-brown, about 20 minutes more. Remove the pan to a wire rack and let cool completely. To serve, grasp the foil in the middle of the pan and lift the bar cookie slab out of the pan and onto a cutting board. Cut into bars.

OCTOBER: Chocolate Pretzel Oatmeal Cookies Patrick Budniewski - Holsten Hills Country Club Ingredients 1 cup Salted Butter 3/4 Cup Brown Sugar 1/4 Cup Granulated Sugar 2 Eggs, Whole 1 TBSP Vanilla Extract 1 ¾ Cup and 2 TBSP All-Purpose Flour 1TSP Baking Soda

1/2 TSP Cinnamon 1/2 TSP Kosher Salt 1 ½ Cup Old Fashioned Oats 2 ½ Cups Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips 1 Cup Mini Pretzels, crushed ¼ Cup Flaky Sea Salt (for sprinkling)

DIRECTIONS: 1. Cream together butter and sugars until combined. Continue mixing, adding one egg at a time until combined. Add vanilla and continue mixing until creamy.

2. In a separate bowl add flour, cinnamon, baking soda, and kosher salt. Slowly add flour mixture to egg-sugar mixture while mixing at low speed. Add 1/4 of the mixture at a time, scraping down sides making sure to fully incorporate the flour mixture.

3. After the flour mixture is all combined, add oats and chocolate chips folding them in by hand.

4. Roll dough into 2 Tablespoon size balls.

5. Gently push a few crushed pretzels into each ball and flatten with the palm of the hand to 1/2 inch thickness.

6. Bake in the oven at 350°F for 9 to 11 minutes.

7. While cookies are cooling sprinkle with flaky salt sea salt.
