CLUB UPDATE
A NOTE FROM YOUR GENERAL MANAGER

Dear Sedgefield Members and Team,
After much reflection, I’ve made the difficult decision to leave Sedgefield and embark on a new adventure This was not an easy choice, as I have genuinely enjoyed my time here. I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunities I’ve had to grow both professionally and personally. Working alongside such a dedicated and supportive team has been one of the most rewarding parts of my career, and I’ll look back on my time here with a great deal of pride and appreciation
From day one, I felt welcomed and valued, and that sense of belonging is something I will carry with me. The experiences I’ve gained and the relationships we built have all played a meaningful role in shaping who I am today.
I will be here until mid-May; I am committed to ensuring a smooth transition and will do everything I can to wrap up my responsibilities and support the team during this time.
Thank you again for the opportunity and for making my time at Sedgefield and McConnell Golf such a positive and fulfilling chapter. I wish you and the entire team continued success
At your service,
Scott F Stuart, CCM, CCE General Manager

JUNE SUMMER CAMPS

SUPERINTENDENT’S CORNER
A NOTE FROM YOUR SEDGEFIELD SUPERINTENDENT

The golf season is finally here, and the turf has come through the winter in great shape with only minimal damage. We're expecting a strong season with warm weather and excellent playing conditions
There are a few small areas on a couple of holes that need attention We’ll be sodding those spots starting the second week of May, right after aerification.
As a reminder, we’ll be aerifying greens, tees, and fairways from April 28th through May 5th. Thanks to healthy turf and favorable weather, recovery should be quick, and conditions will return to form in just a few weeks
With the warmer weather, we’re also starting our regular maintenance routine. Every Monday during the growing season, we’ll verti-groom and lightly sand the greens with ultra-fine sand. This process is lowimpact but essential for keeping our greens in top shape week after week
Come enjoy the perfect golfing weather before summer heat kicks in hope to see you on the course!
Chad Cromer Golf Course Superintendent

I know a lot of you have been asking about the extent of the winter damage we may have here at The Cardinal. One thing is for certain: even though it is early, it is not as bad as it was a few years ago To be honest, the winter damage does not come as a huge surprise this year As you may remember, January was a very cold month.
I know a lot of you have been asking about the extent of the winter damage we may have here at The Cardinal One thing is for certain: even though it is early, it is not as bad as it was a few years ago. To be honest, the winter damage does not come as a huge surprise this year. As you may remember, January was a very cold month.
In January we had to keep the course closed 20 out of 31 days due to snow cover or frozen conditions When we experience such a prolonged period of time of extremely cold weather, some winter damage is likely. All of the areas that we are seeing delayed green up is due to winter shade, or steep north facing slopes that get no direct winter sun.
As I am writing this on the 17th of April, it is still a little early to know the full extent of the damage Just this week we have had a few light frosts; this is not the ideal warm and humid weather that really gets the Bermuda grass jumping out of the ground. The plan is over the next few weeks to fertilize all short cut areas. Along with warmer weather, the additional fertility will get the grass growing more aggressively We will also continue to slice through the areas that are behind to alleviate soil compaction and warm up the soil to help promote growth Over the course of the next five to six weeks, we will see these areas shrink tremendously, and at that time we will know more about the extent of the winter damage and the areas that we will need to sod. The collar damage is much more black and white We already know the few areas that need sod, and we will begin picking away at that right away

Overall, I am happy with the condition of the course even though we have some winter scars to heal in or repair. Hopefully we have a warm spring to really get the Bermuda growing to help heal in some of these spots as soon as possible.
Ross Jernigan Golf Course Superintendent
TEE IT UP AT SEDGEFIELD
A NOTE FROM YOUR DIRECTOR OF GOLF

After a slow starting to 2025, things have really started to gather momentum as we move into May Last month Sedgefield hosted the Women’s ACC Championship which saw Florida State and Wake Forest square off in the match play finals. The matches were all tied going into the last hole and Florida State came out the winner over Wake Forest claiming their first ACC Women’s Championship in school history.
May will be a little slower as we will be aerifying greens the first week of the month. This is our annual maintenance timeframe as Chad Cromer and his staff will be working hard to get everything completed as scheduled Please keep in mind if you bring guests, the golf course conditions are not going to be great for several weeks The weather will dictate how quickly the recovery process will be. A good rule of thumb is to plan on things being back to normal around Memorial Day or slightly after. The Golf Professional Staff will be available to help arrange starting times at our Sister Properties if anyone is interested in playing other facilities during this timeframe
Please be on the lookout for some more fun and exciting events that we have lined up for you. The next time we talk Summer will be in full swing!
I look forward to seeing you at the club!
All the Best, Eric Ferguson, PGA Director of Golf

The practice facilities will be re-open Thursday (May 1st) and will remain open through Sunday (May 4th) from 9AM – 6PM The Golf Shop will also be closed Monday through Wednesday (April 28-April 30) and reopen Thursday (May 1st) for the remainder of the week from 9AM – 4PM

FERG’S FIXES
What Putt Distances Should You Actually Practice? (by Lou
Stagner)
Someone recently asked me about first putt distances: Where do most first putts actually start from? So, I broke it down by skill level and distance to the hole Here’s what the data shows:

For example, for a 10-index player, 23 percent of their first putts are from 5 to 10 feet. Higher-handicap players have more first putts from 5 to 10 feet. They miss more greens but will hit some percent of chips inside 10 feet Lower-handicap players have more first putts inside 5 feet and from 20 to 40 feet Remember, the table above is only first putts, which means just under 18 putts per round (we all chip in occasionally) It’s important to note that nearly all second (and third) putts are from inside 10 feet.
What Does This Mean for Your Practice?
Putts inside 10 feet make up 28 to 32 percent of first putts, but when you add second putts, that number jumps to 55 to 65 percent for most players. If you only have time to practice one thing with your putting, focus on putts from 4 to 10 feet. Not only do you have a large percent of putts from this distance, these are all makeable putts If you have the ability to work on longer putts (15 to 50 feet), focus on speed control Your goal from this range isn’t to make them it’s to avoid three-putts Smart practice leads to lower scores. Make sure you’re spending time where it will matter the most.
TEE IT UP AT THE CARDINAL
A NOTE FROM YOUR DIRECTOR OF GOLF

THE BEGINNING OF A NEW ERA
Welcome to the 50th year of the Cardinal It’s been a long and historic road to get to this point, with twists and turns, ups and downs, but the club is growing with new life, and I couldn’t be prouder of where we are going The Cardinal has always been known for being a players' course, a place people always knew was hard. This challenge was evident during the Cardinal Amateur and the history that tournament had throughout the years. Some well-known players walked the grounds of the Cardinal, and you still hear stories from these players about how difficult the course was. Even without the Amateur, the Cardinal still has the reputation of being one of the truest tests of golf skills around As you know, and have heard from your guests, the Cardinal packs a punch and will make even the best players search for the correct way to get around this piece of property We are encouraged for the next 50 years as we’ve welcomed new members into our family. The Cardinal is and will always be a special place for the true golfer.
As part of the growing history of the Cardinal, we are poised to host this year’s North Carolina Amateur, run by the Carolinas Golf Association This championship has been played on some of the best courses in NC, so it was just a matter of time before Cardinal got added to the list. We will play host to some of the finest golfers from around the state, with some never having played at the Cardinal. It will be a wonderful opportunity to show off the course and the magic our superintendent, Ross Jernigan, can produce for this championship. Now more players from around the state will be talking about the course we all enjoy on a daily basis
To celebrate the opening of the 50th golf season, we hosted our Season Opener back on Saturday, April 5th With ninety-two players enjoying a day on the course, the competition was incredible After the round, players and non-players were invited to join us on the patio for a wonderful late lunch and some live music. The weather was perfect for a day of celebrating the club and reconnecting with fellow members after a long winter. It was fantastic seeing so many join the after-party to enjoy a great afternoon at the Cardinal.
As we look towards the next couple of months, please keep these events on your calendar:

I’m proud to be a part of this club and for you to allow myself and our team to be a part of each of your families. Can’t wait to see what the next 50 years has in store.
