History of South Omaha: 1880-1915

South Omaha began as a waystation between cattle ranges located in Wyoming, the Nebraska Sandhills and the great meat market of Chicago. It soon became one of the fastest-growing cities in the United States, fueled entirely by America's hunger for beef. Join us as we explore South Omaha in the dynamic and independent Magic City era.

History of South Omaha: 1915-1975

During this turbulent era, South Omaha faced many changes that affected its very identity, starting with the unwanted annexation by Omaha in 1915. Its ethnic makeup was altered by the Immigration Act of 1924. The Great Depression and World War II brought further challenges, but by the late 1950s, South Omaha had grown into the largest meatpacking district in the world. Prosperity faltered a decade later as the meatpackers faced the threat of obsolescence and a deindustrializing economy. Join us for a 60-year retrospective that brings South Omaha history to the modern era.

Not for the faint-hearted! Be prepared for chills and goosebumps. Among our haunted and spooky stops, we will visit the Glore Psychiatric Museum in St. Joseph, Missouri, known as the original “State Lunatic Asylum No. 2.” Explore the 130-year history of the state hospital, stories of hauntings and bizarre mental health treatments. Afterwards, enjoy a delicious lunch served in a top-rated local restaurant. Meet your step-on guide in Atchison, Kansas, proclaimed to be the most haunted town in the state. Your guide will focus on paranormal tales of the passing mansions and other buildings, including the famous Waggener House (legend says the owner made a pact with the devil) and the Sallie House, which has earned a national reputation as one of the most haunted places in America.
