The existing building contained many under-utilized spaces, including a large basement and an unoccupied 2nd level floor with park views. By adding an elevator and code approved egress, the design team was able to capitalize on and reactivate these existing amenities.

After years of construction were removed from the interior, a vibrant series of original materials were discovered and embraced as finished surfaces.
The existing layout was maintained but visually opened by new floor-toceiling glass bringing natural light from deep into the floorplate. The material palette was simplified to achromatic textures to let the natural walnut wood define the space.

Inspired by Knoxville and the Great Smoky Mountains, the new space is filled with rich textures and calming hues that offer a distinct look and feel. A mix of open desking and collaborative zones are dispersed on each floor, and enclosed executive offices link closely to open office areas. Gracious lounge areas, ample conference rooms, and private call rooms are spread throughout to provide alternate working postures for employees.

Operations Building, the team designed a 50,000 SF addition that complements the existing material rhythm. Workspaces wrapped by floor-to-ceiling glass open to views of campus spaces and walking trails beyond. The glass also allows ample daylight into the workspace, which research has shown improves employee morale and productivity.
Sustainable strategies include a rooftop solar array, limited water usage inside and out, EV charging stations, efficient lighting and mechanical systems available for demand response, and low-emitting materials selections.

This dermatological services facility includes exam rooms, general procedure and MOHS procedure spaces, an on-site laboratory, and a full-service spa with relaxation room. The building’s sleek and modern form evokes the quality of professional service provided by the practitioners.

Extensive research was completed by the design team to guide the Upper School Achievement Center in innovative learning spaces and curriculum shifts as Webb strives to meet their mission of “re-imagining an extraordinary education.” The design features an immersive learning space with an 18’x6’ touch screen and a media center allowing augmented and virtual reality study opportunities.

ATHENS ELEMENTARY Client: Athens City Schools Location: Athens, TN Square Feet: 178,500 SF Project Completion Year: Fall 2023 Project Team: Designed in collaboration with Design Innovation Architects (DIA)
Designed around a concept of two schools under one roof, this new 1,340 student facility was designed to maintain two independent schools as separate primary and intermediate wings. These phased replacement schools are being built right next to their current and occupied school. The transition to this new campus will occur over the summer so the school year will not be disrupted.

The two wings are connected by a ‘Knowledge Avenue’ with common core and shared resources such as a single kitchen serving two dining spaces, gymnasiums, art, music, STEM, and library.

As part of the restoration project, a new North Garden was created, defining outdoor space for a sculpture garden and special events. The garden is planted with native trees and shrubs, with plaza space for casual dining. A 10 foot high water wall provides a dramatic backdrop for the plaza.

The facility aims to achieve the ‘Arts Initiatives’ of ETSU. The facility meets the educational demands of the University, as well as the aspirations of the region as a whole.
State University’s Fine Arts Programs, the facility is the primary educational and performance venue for the Music and Theater departments. The project not only serves the university but also hosts community programs in its large auditorium in shared use with the city of Johnson City.

The Tennessee Theatre is one of the nation’s top theater restorations from the Spanish-Moorish period of the1920’s and is a beloved highlight of Downtown Knoxville. The MHM team was responsible for every aspect of the restoration and renovation project from programming through construction administration. This included full restoration of all historic finishes, audience chamber, grand lobby, and the building exterior.

A renovation to an existing downtown office building, its prominent site on the World’s Fair Park and its adjacency to the convention center provides an ideal setting for the conversion of the 35-year old building into a hospitality property.
A public area adjacent to the luxorious Tennessean and downtown Marriott, the Maker Exchange features local makers and muralists’ work, with large openings connecting to the famous World’s Fair Park. MHM put Knoxville’s heart and soul into every detail to immerse visitors in a truly authentic Maker City celebration.
