McALLEN PARKS AND RECREATION DEPARTMENT REGISTRATION POLICIES

DIRECTORY OFFICES & SITES

REGISTRATION Walk-in registration will be taken on a first come, first served basis, pending space availability. Register in person at Las Palmas Community Center (1921 N. 25th St.), Lark Community Center (2601 Lark Ave.) and Palm View Community Center (3401 Jordan Rd.) during normal business hours. Walk-in registration is not accepted at the Parks and Recreation Administration Office located on Ware Road. Advance Registration Required. We accept cash, check, Visa or Mastercard. Register online at https:// webtrac.mcallen.net. Visa and Mastercard are accepted forms of payment online. A $20 service charge will be assessed for all returned checks, and students will be removed from classes until finances are settled. REFUNDS AND TRANSFERS TRANSFERS between classes will be allowed only prior to the second class meeting, at no charge. After the second class meeting, transfers may be made, pending space availability, with a charge of $5 per class. REFUNDS for classes will be allowed only prior to the second class meeting and will carry a $10 fee per class. Requests for transfers and refunds must be in writing. Some of our programs, such as Adult Leagues and Facility Rentals, have different, specific policies which apply. The McAllen Parks and Recreation Department retains the privilege of canceling any scheduled activity that fails to generate minimum interest. Refunds will take 30 to 60 days to process.

The Department strives to: Improve the quality of life through the provision of well balanced, high quality recreation programs for the residents of McAllen to enjoy during their leisure time. Facilitate wholesome and constructive programs with a measurable value to the community. Provide attractive and well-maintained major parks and recreation facilities in each sector of the city. These facilities should be within a reasonable distance of every surrounding neighborhood and offer safe opportunities for athletic competition, facility gatherings, and other passive and active recreation activities. Promote environmental conservation, eco and cultural tourism and socially oriented special events.

McFUN BUS TRANSPORTATION

Summer 2013 program participants will be able to travel to recreation sites and swimming pools using Metro McAllen. Participants age 17 years and younger can ride the buses at NO CHARGE using the McFun Fare Bus Pass, if they are enrolled in any McAllen Parks and Recreation Program. Check the bus routes for locations and times. Follows regular bus routes. Passes will be issued upon request, at the time of registration.


LITTLE MISS FOURTH OF JULY PAGEANT Participants will be judged on an interview, talent and modeling western wear. Register in person at Palm View Community Center through Wednesday, June 5. Calling all future Pro Bowlers! This non-contact camp is a great opportunity to learn tips and techniques from coaches and allows athletes to prepare themselves for the upcoming season. YOUTH ADULT SPORTS T.A.A.F. PROGRAMS

McAllen Parks and Recreation is proud to offer Texas Amateur Athletics Federation (T.A.A.F.) programs. Youth athletes will compete against other individuals and teams from across the Rio Grande Valley and the state in various sports including track & field, golf, swimming and tennis. Teams will attend local tournaments and meets, earning the opportunity to compete at the regional level. Qualifying athletes will earn a chance to compete in the Games of Texas, a week-long Olympic style competition featuring a variety of sports. The 2013 Games of Texas will be held July 25–28 in Corpus Christi, TX. Experienced athletes are invited to join Team McAllen. A complete schedule of meets and competitions will be provided once classes begin. Individual T.A.A.F. membership is included in the class fee. Other fees including individual meet fees are the responsibility of the participant.

TEAM GOLF

Improve your golfing skills while competing in tournaments against participants from across the Rio Grande Valley throughout the summer. Participants are required to complete a playing test prior to joining the team. Tests will be held on Monday, June 3rd.

YOUTH SPORTS YOUTH TENNIS LESSONS

Classes introduce the beginner player to fun-filled court action and prepare the advanced player for match play. This program will provide instruction in forehand, backhand and serving. INTERNATIONAL MUSEUM OF ART & SCIENCE OPERATION IMAGINATION inspires, intrigues and delights children of all ages! Campers don’t even realize they are learning because they are having so much fun! Experienced education staff will supervise and guide your child as he or she explores, creates, and learns. McAllen ISD provides an optional breakfast and lunch for all participants. We accept campers at 8:45 a.m. for the morning classes and at 12:45 p.m. for the afternoon classes. Through hands on activities and the teachings of the Dowager Empress Cixi herself, your children will train to be lords and ladies of the Imperial Palace. (Dragons and phoenixes are part of the symbolism used in our stunning Chinese palace exhibit on loan from the Smithsonian Museums and will be a key part of this class). Rainbow Connection (Age 6-7 , 8-9 & 10-12 years) Beautiful vivid color is all around us! Find out the science behind those colors through experiments and creations as your child manipulates and tests color in new and innovative ways to help them make the rainbow connection. League of Explorers (Age 8-9 & 10-12 years) The last clues have been found and the discovery of a lost Aztec treasure is getting closer by the minute, but there is still much to be done! PRE-SCHOOL (4-5 YEARS)

Learn basic water adjustment skills with an emphasis on play to prepare children for comfort in the water for Level 1 & 2. It is designed to teach swimmer independence with initial play in the wading pool and progression to the main pool when students are ready.

YOUTH LEVEL 1 & 2 (6-13 YEARS)

Swimmers will start to learn basic water exploration and swimming skills. This class covers submersion under the water, floating & gliding on front & back, rhythmic breathing, safety skills, and front & back crawls at a beginner level.

YOUTH LEVEL 3 (6-13 YEARS) Designed to build upon skills learned at Levels 1 & 2. The back crawl will be expanded and the front crawl will be perfected. Students will also learn to tread water. YOUTH LEVEL 4 (6-13 YEARS)

Designed to build upon the skills mastered at Level 3. Students develop more endurance to swim greater distances. Breaststroke and sidestroke are also taught.

Facilitate wholesome and constructive programs with a measurable value to the community. Provide attractive and well-maintained major parks and recreation facilities in each sector of the city. These facilities should be within a reasonable distance of every surrounding neighborhood and offer safe opportunities for athletic competition, facility gatherings, and other passive and active recreation activities. Promote environmental conservation, eco and cultural tourism and socially oriented special events.

RETURNED CHECK POLICY

A $20 service charge will be assessed for all returned checks, and students will be removed from classes until finances are settled.

REFUNDS & TRANSFERS

We constantly strive to provide you with the highest quality recreation programs. If, for any reason, you are not completely satisfied with a class or activity, please tell us so we can respond to your concerns. In addition to using your feedback to help us improve, for nearly all of our programs, we will arrange one of the following: TRANSFERS between classes will be allowed only prior to the second class meeting, at no charge. After the second class meeting, transfers may be made, pending space availability, with a charge of $5 per class. REFUNDS for classes will be allowed only prior to the second class meeting and will carry a $10 fee per class. Refunds will take 30 to 60 days to process. Requests for transfers and refunds must be in writing. Some of our programs, such as adult leagues, contract programs and facility rentals, have different, specific policies which apply. The McAllen Parks and Recreation Department retains the privilege of canceling any scheduled activity that fails to generate minimum interest.

MEDICAL POLICY

The City of McAllen Parks and Recreation Department will not prohibit any person from participating in an activity due to a medical condition or handicap, unless such condition is likely to cause injury to that individual or other participants in the activity. A participant who has been notified by a qualified medical professional that he/ she has a medical condition that is likely to cause injury to themselves or other participants, is obligated to inform the Parks and Recreation Department, at the time of registration, of the condition and willingly withdraw from the program or activity if requested by the Department. It is recommended that all participants receive medical authorization before participating in these programs.

INCLUSION PROCESS

The City of McAllen Parks and Recreation welcomes the opportunity to accommodate our patrons with special needs so that full participation in leisure and recreation programs may be enjoyed by all. Reasonable modifications will be assessed on a case-by-case basis taking the appropriate steps to ensuring a safe and enjoyable leisure experience. Patrons with special needs are encouraged to bring a companion with them for assistance at no extra charge in lieu of an additional staff member. The initial request for accommodation should be made on the program registration form.
