2 REGISTRATION MISSION STATEMENT The Department strives to: Improve the quality of life through the provision of well-balanced, high-quality recreation programs for the residents of McAllen to enjoy during their leisure time. Facilitate wholesome and constructive programs with a measurable value to the community. Provide attractive and well-maintained major parks and recreation facilities in each sector of the city. These facilities should be within a reasonable distance of every surrounding neighborhood and offer safe opportunities for athletic competition, facility gatherings, and other passive and active recreation activities. Promote environmental conservation, eco and cultural tourism and socially oriented special events.

ONLINE REGISTRATION

Visit https://webtrac.mcallen.net to register online. You must create a username and password, as well as enter all pertinent household information before the website will allow you to register online. Online forms of payment accepted include Visa and Mastercard. Please call the administration office at (956) 681-3333 if you need assistance.

RETURNED CHECK POLICY

A $20 service charge will be assessed for all returned checks, and students will be removed from classes until finances are settled.

REFUNDS & TRANSFERS

We constantly strive to provide you with the highest quality recreation programs. If, for any reason, you are not completely satisfied with a class or activity, please tell us so we can respond to your concerns. In addition to using your feedback to help us improve our programs, we will arrange one of the following. TRANSFERS between classes will be allowed only prior to the second class meeting, at no charge. After the second class meeting, transfers may be made, pending space availability, with a charge of $5 per class. REFUNDS for classes will be allowed only prior to the second class meeting and will carry a $10 fee per class. Refunds will take 30 to 60 days to process. Requests for transfers and refunds must be in writing. Some of our programs, such as adult leagues, contract programs and facility rentals, have different, specific policies which apply. The McAllen Parks and Recreation Department retains the privilege of canceling any scheduled activity that fails to generate minimum interest.

MEDICAL POLICY

The City of McAllen Parks and Recreation Department will not prohibit any person from participating in an activity due to a medical condition or handicap, unless such condition is likely to cause injury to that individual or other participants in the activity. A participant who has been notified by a qualified medical professional that he/she has a medical condition that is likely to cause injury to themselves or other participants, is obligated to inform the Parks and Recreation Department, at the time of registration, of the condition and willingly withdraw from the program or activity if requested by the Department. It is recommended that all participants receive medical authorization before participating in these programs.

INCLUSION PROCESS

The City of McAllen Parks and Recreation welcomes the opportunity to accommodate our patrons with special needs so that full participation in leisure and recreation programs may be enjoyed by all. Reasonable modifications will be assessed on a case-by-case basis taking the appropriate steps to ensuring a safe and enjoyable leisure experience. Patrons with special needs are encouraged to bring a companion with them for assistance at no extra charge in lieu of an additional staff member. The initial request for accommodation should be made on the program registration form.


LITTLE MISS FOURTH OF JULY PAGEANT

Participants will be judged on an interview, talent and modeling western wear. Registration accepted in person at Palm View Community Center through Wednesday, June 11. MAIN STREET PARADE

Celebrate America’s Independence during the 86th Annual Main Street Parade. Patriotic groups, marching bands, entertainers, businesses, civic clubs and organizations are encouraged to be a part of the parade. Parade entry deadline is Friday, June 27. Entry forms are available online at www.mcallen.net or at the McAllen Parks and Recreation Office. A $45 fee applies for all commercial entries. For more information call (956) 681-3333. 6 TAAF TEAM SPORTS T.A.A.F. TEAM PROGRAMS

McAllen Parks and Recreation is proud to offer Texas Amateur Athletics Federation (T.A.A.F.) programs. Young athletes will compete against other individuals and teams from across the Rio Grande Valley and the state in various sports including track & field, golf, swimming and tennis. Teams will attend local tournaments and meets, earning the opportunity to compete at the regional level. Qualifying athletes will earn a chance to compete in the Games of Texas, a week-long Olympic style competition featuring a variety of sports. The 2014 Games of Texas will be held July 31August 3 in College Station, Texas. Experienced athletes are invited to join Team McAllen. A complete schedule of meets and competitions will be provided once classes begin. Individual T.A.A.F. membership is included in the class fee. Other fees including individual meet fees are the responsibility of the participant.

TRACK & FIELD TEAM

Team Tennis is for the experienced tennis players (ages 6-18 years) who want to improve their stroke, game strategy, and ball placement while working toward regional and state competition. Participants who qualify for advanced competition are responsible for their own travel expenses.

GAMES OF TEXAS PARENT MEETING

Improve your golfing skills while competing in tournaments against participants from across the Rio Grande Valley throughout the summer. Participants are required to complete a playing test prior to joining the team. Tests will be held on Monday, June 2.

Parents of athletes who qualify for the Games of Texas will be required to attend a meeting to discuss travel, expenses and general information. Additional costs will apply for non-resident athletes.

Designed for all players that want to learn and master the discipline of volleyball. Learn and develop the skills to play for recreation or competition in a comfortable and enjoyable environment. About the instructor: Dr. Chavez graduated with a Ph.D. in Educational Counseling. She also holds a Master Degree in Physical Education from George University of Germany. She has accumulated 17 years of experience as a volleyball player in a variety of countries including Mexico, Germany, Netherlands, Italy, Czech Republic & the United States. Calling all future Pro Bowlers! This noncontact camp is a great opportunity to learn tips and techniques from coaches and allows athletes to prepare themselves for the upcoming season. BASKETBALL CAMP OF CHAMPS

Coach Romy Vela from San Antonio John Jay High School will conduct this summer’s boy’s and girl’s camp. Area high school and middle school basketball coaches will assist Coach Vela. Participants will receive four days of excellent drills, techniques, practice and competition while having fun. Friday will be tournament day with both age groups meeting at 8:30 a.m. to compete. All campers will receive a T-shirt. The first 100 registered campers will receive a camp basketball.

7 ON 7 FOOTBALL LEAGUE

Seven players line up against opposing seven players in a fast-paced, actionpacked game of non-tackle football. Players from area high schools are encouraged to form their teams and work on physical development and skills during the summer. Two (2) divisions are Varsity (returning players, juniors & seniors) and Junior Varsity (entering freshmen & sophomores). Teams are limited to 20 players.

Acoustic Guitar - Learn proper techniques to play, including strumming and chords. Acoustic guitar required. Ballet - Introduction to the graceful art form of ballet. Learn positions, balance and coordination. Dodgeball Skills - Introduction to fundamentals of throwing, catching and dodging the ball! Folklorico - Learn the many different styles of traditional Mexican dance and choreography. Football Skills - Learn basic football skills including throwing, kicking, blocking and punting. Get Fit with Wii - Increase stamina, agility, balance, and coordination all while playing your favorite video games Hands on Art - Create art with your hands and make a variety of beautiful art and seasonal crafts. 22 MUSEUM PROGRAMS Operation Imagination will motivate, engage and activate your child’s imagination in a fun learning environment. The dedicated Education staff has prepared some new adventures in learning to make this summer a wonderful experience for young learners! We have developed up to 3 levels for most classes to make each week unique. Campers are not required to have taken the first levels to participate in the last level classes, they can join the fun at any time. On the first day of each session, the instructors will assess the participant’s swimming ability by performing a skills test. Based on the test, the instructor will determine the participants class level. YOUTH LEVEL 1 & 2 (6-13 YEARS) Swimmers will start to learn basic water exploration and swimming skills. This class covers submersion under the water, floating & gliding on front & back, rhythmic breathing, safety skills, and front & back crawls at a beginner level. YOUTH LEVEL 3 (6-13 YEARS) Designed to build upon skills learned at Levels 1 & 2. The back crawl will be expanded and the front crawl will be perfected. Students will also learn to tread water. CLASS DESCRIPTIONS

Acoustic Guitar - Learn proper techniques to play, including strumming and chords. Acoustic guitar required. Ballet - Introduction to the graceful art form of ballet. Learn positions, balance and coordination. Cheer - Introduction to cheer skills and techniques. Include cheer, jumps and dances. Get Fit with Wii - Get your heart and body in shape with fun exercise using music as motivation! Enjoy an intro to dance steps with a variety of music! Folklorico - Learn the many different styles of traditional Mexican dance and choreography. Football Skills - Learn basic football skills including throwing, kicking, blocking and punting. Hands on Art - Get creative and get your hands busy with paint, glitter and glue and create fun seasonal crafts. Hoop Starz - Intro to basketball skills. Learn the fundamental form of dribbling, passing, and shooting Just Dance - It’s a mix of a little Hip Hop, Jazz and Free Style dance techniques. Matcercise - Learn basic tumbling skills from forward rolls, tiny toe touches and proper stretching. Mini Masterpieces - Work with a variety of materials from paint to beads and create your own art by hand. Painting & Drawing - Use a variety of art media to create your very own masterpiece. Learn basic perspectives of color and dimension. Soccer Skills - Basic introduction to skills and techniques including running, dribbling and kicking. Tennis shoes required. Activity takes place indoors and outdoors. Tumbling - Learn basic tumbling skills from forward rolls, cartwheels and basic back handsprings.
