MISSION

The Department strives to: Improve the quality of life through the provision of well-balanced, high-quality recreation programs for the residents of McAllen to enjoy during their leisure time.

Facilitate wholesome and constructive programs with a measurable value to the community. Provide attractive and wellmaintained major parks and recreation facilities in each sector of the city. These facilities should be within a reasonable distance of every surrounding neighborhood and offer safe opportunities for athletic competition, facility gatherings, and other passive and active recreation activities. Promote environmental conservation, eco and cultural tourism and socially oriented special events.

REGISTRATION - 2 easy ways to register ONLINE

Online registration is available seven days a week, 24 hours a day at www.mcallenparks.net. An account with USER ID and password is required to access the system. Create your account online. NOTE: By default, newly created household accounts will appear as nonresident until proof of residency is verified. If you have NEVER registered for a McAllen Parks & Recreation program or are new to the area, you will not have a verified account. To verify McAllen residency, bring one of the following items with you to any of the three community centers listed to the right.

Acceptable identification includes: • Utility bill for the household such as gas, electric, water or waste removal.

• Phone, television, and internet services bill • Lease, tax, or mortgage statement with your name on it • Auto insurance statement

PAYMENT

The McAllen Parks & Recreation Department accepts payment by check, cash, Visa & Mastercard.

RETURNED CHECK POLICY

A $20 service charge will be assessed for all returned checks, and students will be removed from classes until finances are settled.

SATISFACTION GUARANTEE

If, for any reason, you are not completely satisfied with a class or activity, call or visit a community center. In addition to using your feedback to help us improve our programs, we will arrange one of the following.

TRANSFERS between classes will be allowed only prior to the second class meeting, at no charge. After the second class meeting, transfers may be made, pending space availability, with a charge of $5 per class. REFUNDS for classes will be allowed only prior to the second class meeting and will carry a $10 fee per class. Refunds will take 30 to 60 days to process.

Requests for transfers and refunds must be in writing.

The satisfaction guarantee does not include, adult leagues, contract programs and facility rentals.

PROGRAM CANCELLATION POLICY

The McAllen Parks and Recreation Department reserves the right to cancel, postpone, or combine classes as necessary. Classes may be cancelled due to low enrollment. Register early to view the best schedule options.

INCLUSIVE PROGRAMS

The City of McAllen Parks and Recreation welcomes the opportunity to accommodate our patrons with special needs so that full participation in leisure and recreation programs may be enjoyed by all. Reasonable modifications will be assessed on a case-by-case basis taking the appropriate steps to ensuring a safe and enjoyable leisure experience. Patrons with special needs are encouraged to bring a companion with them for assistance at no extra charge in lieu of an additional staff member. The initial request for accommodation should be made on the program registration form.

MEDICAL POLICY

The City of McAllen Parks and Recreation Department will not prohibit any person from participating in an activity due to a medical condition or handicap, unless such condition is likely to cause injury to that individual or other participants in the activity. A participant who has been notified by a qualified medical professional that he/she has a medical condition that is likely to cause injury to themselves or other participants, is obligated to inform the Parks and Recreation Department, at the time of registration, of the condition and willingly withdraw from the program or activity if requested by the Department. It is recommended that all participants receive medical authorization before participating in these programs.

NEWSLETTER Newsletters with program activities, daily lunch schedule and special events can be found at the front desk free of charge at each City of McAllen community center.

AMIGOS DEL VALLE Participating seniors (60 & Over) are able to partake in a free lunch provided by Amigos Del Valle. ADV is recognized as the largest and most enduring non-profit resource senior service, Elderly Supportive Housing service and home meal delivery service provider of the Rio Grande Valley of South Texas.

VOLUNTEER PROGRAM MISSION STATEMENT To engage men and women age 50 and better in meaningful volunteer service that strengthens the well- being of both self and community.

Volunteer Assignments Include: Assisting with serving coffee daily, collecting daily donation during lunch, assisting custodian staff with cleaning of tables, class instructors, prepare meals on wheels’ home delivery trays, assist with serving meals to center participants.

SENIOR TRIPS An essential part of senior programming are monthly field trips. Field trips allow our participants to experience new and existing activities throughout the valley. Trips schedule for throughout the year include South Padre Island, Gladys Porter Zoo, McAllen Nature Center, Quinta Mazatlán, Rio Grande Valley Livestock Show, Bentsen State Park, La Plaza Mall and many more.

SENIOR DANCE Every third Wednesday of the month, Las Palmas Community Center hosts the monthly senior dance which features live music, raffle prizes and concession items. Community participants 50 and over are welcomed to attend and dance the afternoon away from 1-3:30 p.m. the fee to enter is $1.50.

LEVEL 1 & 2

Swimmers will start to learn basic water exploration and swimming skills. This class covers submersion under the water, floating & gliding on front & back, rhythmic breathing, safety skills, and front & back crawls at a beginner level.

LEVEL 3

Designed to build upon skills learned during previous levels. The back crawl will be expanded and the front crawl will be perfected. Swimmers will also learn how to tread water.

LEVEL 4

Designed to build upon the skills mastered at Level 3. Swimmers will develop endurance to swim greater distances. Breaststroke and sidestroke are also taught.

ADULT (14 & OVER)

For adults/teens who either want to overcome their fear of the water or for adults that are comfortable in the water, but would like to improve their strokes.

LIFEGUARDING TRAINING

Train to become a certified American Red Cross lifeguard and learn valuable skills including injury prevention, facility safety, patron surveillance, emergency preparation, rescue skills, victim assessment, first aid, CPR/AED and care for head, neck and spinal injuries.

PREREQUISITE: Participant must be able to swim 300 yards continuously, complete a timed retrieval of a 10lb object from a depth of 7-10 ft., tread water with no hands for 2 minutes in deep water. In the event a participant fails to complete the prerequisite test, he/she may request a refund minus the $50 non-refundable fee or transfer to another Lifeguard Training Session at no additional cost. Transfers will only be allowed once per participant for free. Participants 17 and under MUST be accompanied by an adult during the prerequisite activities. Participants must be present for pre-requisite testing and all four class days. Pre-Requisite will take place on first day of class at

5pm.

MYSA is a 501© Non-Profit Organization McAllen Youth Soccer is a nonprofit organization composed of parent volunteers helping our youth today in their development in soccer. The objective of MYSA is to provide coaching and soccer training for children between the ages of 3-18.

McAllen Youth Soccer is affiliated with Houston Dynamo (MLS) professional team from Houston. Dynamo STX Academy and MYSA staff members work together to build and develop kids to grow in every aspect in soccer. We have kids every year that grow from MYSA to Dynamo and go on to top colleges to play soccer at the highest level. All of Dynamo STX staff members have very impressive soccer backgrounds in playing the game and coaching the game. All current staff members with Dynamo STX Academy have USSF licenses to put them in line with coaching the current game and the changes that get made continuously within the youth game. Every Staff member is totally committed to the development of our youth players in the program and they continue to strive to make themselves better coaches for the benefit of the players. MCSPORTS

As part of the current After school Program, a new sports development program will implement sport skills and technique activities while also focusing on healthy nutrition and reinforcing positive character traits. Every five weeks, all after school registered program participants will focus on learning a different sport. Sports include football, kickball, volleyball, floor hockey, baseball and track. A maximum of 15 students per grade level (2nd/3rd - 4th/5th) will be eligible to compete in a fun team tournament to showcase all their new skills. The student teams will compete during the tournament against other after school registered sites at the end of the five-week session. All the McSports after school coaches receive quality training in each individual sport and are committed to providing a safe and fun learning environment. Participants must be registered in the after school program to be eligible to compete in the tournament.

After School Program Supervised after school play and homework help are available at select McAllen ISD elementary schools. The After School program is only available during regular class days. The program observes all school holidays and weather days.
