MISSION

The Department strives to: Improve the quality of life through the provision of well-balanced, high-quality recreation programs for the residents of McAllen to enjoy during their leisure time. Facilitate wholesome and constructive programs with a measurable value to the community. Provide attractive and wellmaintained major Parks & Recreation facilities in each sector of the city. These facilities should be within a reasonable distance of every surrounding neighborhood and offer safe opportunities for athletic competition, facility gatherings, and other passive and active recreation activities. Promote environmental conservation, eco and cultural tourism and socially oriented special events.

REGISTRATION - 2 easy ways to register ONLINE

Online registration is available seven days a week, 24 hours a day at www.mcallenparks.net. An account with USER ID and password is required to access the system. Create your account online. NOTE: By default, newly created household accounts will appear as nonresident until proof of residency is verified. If you have NEVER registered for a McAllen Parks & Recreation program or are new to the area, you will not have a verified account. To verify McAllen residency, bring one of the following items with you to any of the three community centers listed to the right. Acceptable identification includes: Utility bill for the household such as gas, electric, water or waste removal. Phone, television, and internet services bill Lease, tax, or mortgage statement with your name on it Auto insurance statement

PAYMENT The McAllen Parks & Recreation Department accepts payment by check, cash, Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and Discover.

CREDIT CARD FEE A 3% convenience fee will be added to all credit card transactions. *Credit Card Fee Non-Refundable*

RETURNED CHECK POLICY A $20 service charge will be assessed for all returned checks, and students will be removed from classes until finances are settled.

SATISFACTION GUARANTEE If, for any reason, you are not completely satisfied with a class or activity, call or visit a community center. In addition to using your feedback to help us improve our programs, we will arrange one of the following. TRANSFERS between classes will be allowed only prior to the second class meeting, at no charge. After the second class meeting, transfers may be made, pending space availability, with a charge of $5 per class. REFUNDS for classes will be allowed only prior to the second class meeting and will carry a $10 fee per class. Refunds will take 30 to 60 days to process. Requests for transfers and refunds must be in writing. The satisfaction guarantee does not include, adult leagues, contract programs and facility rentals.

PROGRAM CANCELLATION POLICY The McAllen Parks & Recreation Department reserves the right to cancel, postpone, or combine classes as necessary. Classes may be cancelled due to low enrollment. Register early to view the best schedule options.

INCLUSIVE PROGRAMS The City of McAllen Parks & Recreation welcomes the opportunity to accommodate our patrons with special needs so that full participation in leisure and recreation programs may be enjoyed by all. Reasonable modifications will be assessed on a case-by-case basis taking the appropriate steps to ensuring a safe and enjoyable leisure experience. Patrons with special needs are encouraged to bring a companion with them for assistance at no extra charge in lieu of an additional staff member. The request for accommodation should be submitted in advance through the program registration form.

MEDICAL POLICY The City of McAllen Parks & Recreation Department will not prohibit any person from participating in an activity due to a medical condition or handicap, unless such condition is likely to cause injury to that individual or other participants in the activity. A participant who has been notified by a qualified medical professional that he/she has a medical condition that is likely to cause injury to themselves or other participants, is obligated to inform the Parks & Recreation Department, at the time of registration, of the condition and willingly withdraw from the program or activity if requested by the Department. It is recommended that all participants receive medical authorization before participating in these programs.

MANGA COMICS & MORE

GRACIOUS BALLET

Create your very own masterpiece in a fun cartoon, comic, or anime style each one truly one of a kind and filled with personality. At the end of each session, parents and children will join a special art activity, and all artwork will be proudly displayed at our Lark Art Gala.

Join us for our special session on the classic and graceful art form of Ballet. Participants will learn the positions, coordination, and balance needed to become beautiful ballerinas. At the end of each session, there will be a recital for family and friends to come and see their children perform. Ballet shoes are recommended.

TAE KWON DO UNIVERSE Tuesday & Thursday

Partake in a popular and exciting Martial Art. Learn the necessary skills of discipline, respect, basic kicks and basic hand movements. A fun class using pads and shields to practice with and craft your skills. Each session will conclude with a showcase of skills learned in the class.

TUMBLING

TINY LARK BASEBALL

Your child will follow instructions from coaches learning basic movements such as rolls, twists, jumps and other exciting skills and mat activities. There will be an end of session recital where the tiny tumblers can showcase their skills.

America’s favorite pastime becomes a reality for mini baseball players. They will learn basic baseball skills and showcase them in a end of session All-Star baseball game with announcers, officials and fans. A once in a lifetime experience.

CHESS CLUB

Monday & Wednesday

Learn how to play this international board game. Learn the names of the pieces and how they are moved on the board. Use strategy against your opponent. This game is played by two players. Schools have adopted this as a UIL competition. The finale will be a tournament for bragging rights.

NASA STEM Minds Tuesday & Thursday

STEM is where we learn Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. Using Legos, popsicle sticks, pipe cleaners and other creative supplies applying ingenuity in each of our sessions. Don’t be left out.

A peaking trend that is thrilling people throughout the World by learning choreographed dances. The dances will be based on music by world renowned groups like BTS, Black Pink, Big Bang and others. End of session will end up in performance for the whole family.

VOLLEYBALL SKILLS Monday & Wednesday

Participants will have a blast while learning the basics in the sport of volleyball such as rules and techniques. They will be introduced to defensive skills in serving/passing, setting, hitting, and spiking. (Knee pads are recommended not required). All supplies will be provided.

LITTLE GYMNAST

SOCCER SKILLS

This high energy tumbling class will introduce foundational skills such as forward rolls, handstands, and cartwheels, all while building strenghth, balance, and coordnation. Participants will put together a small obstacle routine to showcas their skills.

This class is designed to introduce children to the joy of singing as performing in a fun and supportive environment. Through engaging activities and musical games, children will learn basic vocal techniques, develop their musicality, and build confidence on stage.

LEARN TO SWIM PROGRAM Our Learn to Swim program for Youth (6-13 Years) teaches the fundamentals for swimming. Our Learn to Swim program for Youth incorporates the first three levels of the American Red Cross Learn to Swim programming: LEVEL 1 This level orients participants to the aquatic environment and helps them gain basic aquatic skills. Participants begin to develop positive attitudes and safe practices around water. LEVEL 2 This level builds on the basic aquatic skills and water safety skills and concepts learned in Level 1. Skills learned in this level include: Holding of breath and retrieving objects from the pool floor, changing direction of travel while swimming, treading water, and more. LEVEL 3 Level 3: This level further builds on the skills learned in Levels 1 and 2 to help participants achieve basic water competency in a pool environment. Skills learned in this level include: Head first entry into the pool from a sitting or kneeling position, survival float, rotary breathing, and more.
