MISSION

The Department strives to: Improve the quality of life through the provision of well-balanced, high-quality recreation programs for the residents of McAllen to enjoy during their leisure time. Facilitate wholesome and constructive programs with a measurable value to the community. Provide attractive and wellmaintained major Parks & Recreation facilities in each sector of the city. These facilities should be within a reasonable distance of every surrounding neighborhood and offer safe opportunities for athletic competition, facility gatherings, and other passive and active recreation activities. Promote environmental conservation, eco and cultural tourism and socially oriented special events.

Online registration is available seven days a week, 24 hours a day at www.mcallenparks.net. An account with USER ID and password is required to access the system. Create your account online. NOTE: By default, newly created household accounts will appear as nonresident until proof of residency is verified. If you have NEVER registered for a McAllen Parks & Recreation program or are new to the area, you will not have a verified account. To verify McAllen residency, bring one of the following items with you to any of the three community centers listed to the right.

Acceptable identification includes: Utility bill for the household such as gas, electric, water or waste removal.

Phone, television, and internet services bill Lease, tax, or mortgage statement with your name on it Auto insurance statement

INCLUSIVE PROGRAMS

The McAllen Parks & Recreation Department accepts payment by check, cash, Visa & Mastercard.

The City of McAllen Parks & Recreation welcomes the opportunity to accommodate our patrons with special needs so that full participation in leisure and recreation programs may be enjoyed by all. Reasonable modifications will be assessed on a case-by-case basis taking the appropriate steps to ensuring a safe and enjoyable leisure experience. Patrons with special needs are encouraged to bring a companion with them for assistance at no extra charge in lieu of an additional staff member. The initial request for accommodation should be made on the program registration form.

RETURNED CHECK POLICY A $20 service charge will be assessed for all returned checks, and students will be removed from classes until finances are settled.

SATISFACTION GUARANTEE If, for any reason, you are not completely satisfied with a class or activity, call or visit a community center. In addition to using your feedback to help us improve our programs, we will arrange one of the following. TRANSFERS between classes will be allowed only prior to the second class meeting, at no charge. After the second class meeting, transfers may be made, pending space availability, with a charge of $5 per class. REFUNDS for classes will be allowed only prior to the second class meeting and will carry a $10 fee per class. Refunds will take 30 to 60 days to process. Requests for transfers and refunds must be in writing. The satisfaction guarantee does not include, adult leagues, contract programs and facility rentals.

PROGRAM CANCELLATION POLICY The McAllen Parks & Recreation Department reserves the right to cancel, postpone, or combine classes as necessary. Classes may be cancelled due to low enrollment. Register early to view the best schedule options.

MEDICAL POLICY The City of McAllen Parks & Recreation Department will not prohibit any person from participating in an activity due to a medical condition or handicap, unless such condition is likely to cause injury to that individual or other participants in the activity. A participant who has been notified by a qualified medical professional that he/she has a medical condition that is likely to cause injury to themselves or other participants, is obligated to inform the Parks & Recreation Department, at the time of registration, of the condition and willingly withdraw from the program or activity if requested by the Department. It is recommended that all participants receive medical authorization before participating in these programs.

Tae Kwon Do Universe

A basic introduction to skills and techniques of popular sports like basketball, football , soccer, volleyball, and so much more! All equipment needs will be available for all participants. Participants may also choose to bring their own gear. Each session will conclude with a skills challenge program. (Tennis shoes and sports attire are required.)

Partake in a popular and exciting Martial Art. Learn the necessary skills of discipline, respect, basic kicks and basic hand movements. Parent Assisted Little Tumbler

Learn exciting cheer, chant and dance routines. Participate in a new twist of cheer with experienced instructors. Be part of all the fun. Each session will end with a Cheer & Dance performance. (Tennis shoes are required.)

We are excited to introduce Floor Hockey, a brand-new program powered by the Dallas Stars. This fast-paced and engaging program gives youth the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of hockey, build teamwork and confidence, and stay active in a fun, supportive environment. Whether your child is new to the sport or eager to sharpen their skills, this program brings the excitement of professional hockey right to our community.

America’s favorite pastime becomes a reality for mini baseball players.

They will learn basic baseball skills and showcase them in a end of session All-Star baseball game with announcers, officials and fans. A once in a lifetime experience. (Tennis shoes & athletic attire are required. )

STEM Minds

Volleyball Skills

Mini Martial Arts

Participants will learn the fundamentals of volleyball, including essential rules and techniques. The class will introduce key defensive and offensive skills such as serving, passing, setting, hitting, and spiking. Knee pads are recommended but not required. All equipment will be provided.

This program provides a structured, lane-based environment ideal for improving endurance, technique, and overall health. Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned swimmer, lap swim is a great way to stay active at your own pace.

Please Note: All participants are required to fill out registration forms at initial visit.

All participants are subject to a 'swim test' which consists of swimming 25 meters unassisted, non-stop, in order to participate in the lap swim program. Swim tests are conducted at the Manager's discretion.

Babysitting & Child Care Training

Designed for swimmers ready to advance from beginner level LTS, this program focuses on building confidence, strength, and movement in the water.

Participants will explore efficient ways to move through strokes, develop better body control, and improve water awareness. Through guided instruction, swimmers will enhance their technique, build endurance, and gain skills that promote more confidence in the water.

The American Red Cross Babysitter’s Training r.25 program is designed to prepare youth ages 11-16 to safely and confidently care for children and infants. It includes hands-on activities, videos, and discussions to develop essential, real-life readiness babysitting skills. The course covers feeding, diapering, picking up and holding children, safety, and emergency response. This program offers Babysitter’s Training in the classroom.

LTS LEVELS / AGE GROUPS Parent/Baby (6-18 Months) This class is designed to teach parents how to work safely and effectively with their infant to help develop water adjustment skills and learn to have fun in the water. One parent per child is allowed in the water at a time.

Children who are of diaper age are required to wear reusable swim diapers and a swim suit.

Parent/Toddler (19-48 Months) This class reinforces skills learned in the infant level class and progresses to learn more advanced skills age-appropriate for a toddler. One parent per child is allowed in the water at a time. Children who are of diaper age are required to wear reusable swim diapers and a swim suit.

Pre-School (4-5 Years) In this class, participants will learn basic water adjustment skills with an emphasis on play to prepare children for comfort in the water when they become of age for level 1 & 2. Participants will also begin to develop positive attitudes and safe practices in and around water.

Level 1: In this class, participants will learn basic water adjustment skills with an emphasis on play to help prepare children for comfort in the water as they become age-eligible for Levels 1 and 2. Participants will also begin to develop positive attitudes and safe practices in and around the water.

Level 2: Participants will build on and improve the skills learned in Level 1 and increase their knowledge of water safety topics introduced in Level 1.

Youth (6-13 Years) Our Learn to Swim program for Youth teaches the fundamentals for swimming which incorporates the first three levels of the American Red Cross Learn to Swim programming: Level 1: This level orients participants to the aquatic environment and helps them gain basic aquatic skills. Participants begin to develop positive attitudes and safe practices around water.

Level 2: This level builds on the basic aquatic skills and water safety skills and concepts learned in Level 1. Skills learned in this level include: Holding of breath and retrieving objects from the pool floor, changing direction of travel while swimming, treading water, and more.

Level 3: This level further builds on the skills learned in Levels 1 and 2 to help participants achieve basic water competency in a pool environment. Skills learned in this level include: Head first entry into the pool from a sitting or kneeling position, survival float, rotary breathing, and more.

Teens & Adults (14+) This class is geared towards teens & adults to help gain basic aquatic skills and swimming strokes and to teach skills and concepts needed to stay safe in and around water and to help themselves or others in an aquatic emergency. In addition to this, this class improves participants’ proficiency in basic aquatic skills and the six basic swimming strokes as well as refining participants’ front crawl, back crawl, and breaststroke strokes and turns and help build endurance.

Adaptive Aquatics This program adapts traditional swimming instruction to meet the unique needs of each participant, considering factors like cognitive, developmental, or physical challenges. The goal is to empower individuals to become confident and comfortable in the water, fostering independence and promoting water safety.
