The body is a nation I have not known.

The pure joy of air: the moment between leaping from a cliff into the wall of blue below. Like that.

Or to feel the rub of tired lungs against skincovered bone, like a hand against the rough of bark.

Like that. “The body is a savage,” I said.

For years I said that: the body is a savage.

As if this safety of the mind were virtue not cowardice. For years I have snubbed the dark rub of it, said, “I am better, Lord, I am better,” but sometimes, in an unguarded moment of sun, I remember the cowdung-scent of my childhood skin thick with dirt and sweat and the screaming grass.

But this distance I keep is not divine, for what was Christ if not God’s desire to smell his own armpit? And when I see him, I know he will smile, fingers glued to his nose, and say, “Next time I will send you a down as a dog to taste this pure hunger.”

Some people call it faith. Some call it religion. It makes the world go around. In some aspects, it makes the art world go around as well. Artists have been renowned for challenging many concepts or ideas. Religion hasn’t been exempt. They have also influenced religion in some instances. What image do you visualise when you think of Jesus Christ?

Art and religion have had a rocky relationship in the past.

More recently however, art has explored religion more often in various ways, through music, contemporary art, body art etc. The two themes/concepts undoubtedly have a permanent link which still continues to be examined by various artists in their various disciplines.

In this edition, which we’ve dubbed our “Religion and Art” edition, we look at the different ways religion has filtered into art and vice versa. We also chat to performer Bontle Modiselle on her role in Africa’s first dance movie, Hear Me Move.

Musician Nubia Soul also chats to us about her album Love Chronicles. We also give an update on what you can expect at this year’s Johannesburg Arts Alive 2014 Festival, as well as what’s lined up for Jozi’s first ever Art Week. Jade Doreen Waller is our featured Artist for the month, whose works chronicle the ‘information overload’ environment we live in today. We also report on how some artists have responded to the political unrest between Israel and Palestine.

We pay tribute to late actor Robin Williams, whose untimely passing came as a shock to his fans and colleagues.

Regardless of our differing religions or beliefs throughout nations, we are all connected. Artists would be doing a huge injustice to the discipline of art if they neglected to explore this symbiotic relationship. Hope you enjoy this edition!

DOES RELIGION HAVE A PLACE WITHIN THE ARTS?

When religion and art collide one more often than not expects a negative response. In more recent times however, the two concepts’ meetings have had a more positive story to tell. In 2011, Enrique Martinez Celaya’s exhibit at Manhattan’s Museum of Biblical Art entitled “The Wanderer” sought to plant questions in the audience’s minds. The sculptures, though not straightforwardly religious, cast a lot of mystery and doubt. But they were presided over by shelves of antique Bibles, as if to remind the viewer that the Scriptures themselves pose similar questions.

Contemporary Art A significant name in religious art is that of Makoto Fujimura, who came to faith as a painter. He has made a career of showing Protestants how faith and art can be symbiotic. Harvard’s Camille Paglia is of the opinion that: “I would argue that the route to a renaissance of the American fine arts lies through religion. Let me make my premises clear: I am a professed atheist and a prochoice libertarian Democrat. ... For the fine arts to revive, they must recover their spiritual center. Profaning the iconography of other people’s faiths is boring and adolescent. The New Age movement, to which I belong, was a distillation of the 1960s’ multicultural attraction to world religions, but it has failed thus far to produce important work in the visual arts.”

An exploration of religious concerns within the art world has more often than not been shrouded in controversy.

Writer Jonathan D. Fitzgerald claims “The reality is that art has always been a part of Christianity; for much of Church and art history, churches have been the chief patrons of artists. But the Reformation, in an earnest effort to rid Christianity of the failings of the Catholic Church, planted a seed of distrust of art.”

Body Art:

It’s not all doom and gloom though. Anointed Ink owner, Scott Hill is a tattoo artist with a difference. The Texas, USA, native’s shop reaches out to believers with body modification. According to a Pew Research Center Report, nearly 40 percent of adults under age 30 have a tattoo. Hill’s studio stays busy with dozens of clients each week- clients looking for permanent reminders of their faith. He uses body art as a canvas to spread the word of his religion and to recruit more members to his church. Tattooed Christians say these marks help them show off their religious beliefs while relating to a broader culture where tattooing has become so prevalent.

Music:

Religion always has a place in some forms of art. Artists take a critical or promotional stance and no matter the result, it always gets people talking. South African rap group Last Days Fam continue to make music influenced by their religious leanings. The Christian hip hop group has extended their artistry to performances in churches. In dealing with perceptions associated with hip hop, such as vulgarity, the crew aimed to change perspectives. “We had the same issues at churches because of the things associated with the culture. The reason we engaged the culture as LDF was because we wanted to change perspectives and redefine this musical aspect of the culture - to add a different influence and therefore change its manifestation in the world in general.

The redefinition of the culture remains part of our mission,” they say.

Film: Samuel L. Jackson’s role in the Quentin Tarantino flick Pulp Fiction has achieved near cult-status largely because of his famous delivery of a Bible verse in the film:

“The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men.

Blessed is he, who in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of darkness, for he is truly his brother’s keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who would attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. The Avengers actor recently recited his speech on The Graham Norton Show, to resounding applause. The world of film continues to explore, prod and question relentlessly when it comes to religion.

Despite the challenges and the differing perceptions, the relationship between art and religion is one that continues to feed off the other. Regardless of the drama that ensues, it is without doubt the fact that we are all connected and artists will continue to interpret this relationship.

The Material Girl was raised Roman Catholic and has been a follower of Kabbalah for 17 years. In 2013 she revealed she was studying the Quran which raised many eyebrows. Some questioned whether this was because of the influence of her Muslim boyfriend.

Never far from controversy, Madge has stated, “As my friend Yaman always tells me, a good Muslim is a good Jew and a good Jew is a good Christian and so forth. I couldn’t agree more.”

Terry Perry The playwright, actor, producer and director is known for his movies with strong religious messages. The films have received some negative reviews but have remained resoundingly profitable. The content usually has a deep religious meaning and has been criticized as “preachy and righteous” by some and conversely “uplifting and encouraging” by others.

“I try to write from a point of view with my faith being always present and always there,” he’s said. His work has often been inspired by his personal story of forgiveness.

“I learned to surrender, which has been the most difficult thing I’ve had to learn in my life…Not my will, but His will be done.”

Tiger Woods Born Eldrick Tont Woods, “Tiger” was raised Buddhist by his Thai mother. The religion has been said to have about 350 million adherents. Woods has said, “I like Buddhism because it’s a whole way of being and living. It’s based on discipline and respect and personal responsibility.” When news of his extramarital affairs began surfacing, the golfing champion admitted to abandoning the teachings of his religion.

According to Buddhism, “samsara” refers to the process of cycling through one rebirth after another within the six realms of existence, where each realm can be understood as a physical realm or a psychological state characterized by a particular type of suffering. Samsara arises out of avidya (ignorance) and is characterized by dukkha (suffering, anxiety, dissatisfaction…)

Prince

Musician Prince who is nowadays affiliated with the Jehovah’s Witness Religion was raised as a Seventh - day Adventist. “If one religion believes Christ is the king and another doesn’t then there’s a difference in religions,” he believes.

The ‘Purple Rain’ singer has been a devout Jehovah’s Witness since 2001 and goes out door-to-door to spread the word about his faith. “Sometimes people act surprised when I’m at their house, but mostly they’re cool about it.”

The religion’s believers believe that the destruction of the present world system at Armageddon is imminent and that the establishment of God’s kingdom on earth is the only solution for all problems faced by humanity.

The denomination ha beliefs distinct from mainstream Christianity.

Prince believes, “God told us he made us in his image to create. Everything I do is inspired by God.”

NAS’ ADVICE TO KENDRICK LAMAR Currently working on his sophomore album release, Kendrick Lamar has a lot of pressure on him in the form of throngs of die hard “Good Kid mAAd city” fans. One person who can relate to the pressure of releasing a follow-up album to a classic debut is Queensbridge legend Nas. Chatting to Insanul Ahmed of Complex.com, he had a lot of advice for KDot:

On how to follow up a classic album: It’s something I thought about with Kendrick because his first album was received so well and already in his career, outside of his album, he shook up the rap game. So he’s just set up for his second offering. The [anticipation] is through the roof. It’s such a great place to be for someone who’s a writer, especially in a business today where it’s about singles and records that just go off in the club. It’s more artists coming out just slinging singles than banging albums. He’s an album guy.

Those guys, it’s a different league. It’s an exciting moment for us.

On moments he doubted himself: You had Jay Z coming. You had Ghostface’s first album. You had Raekwon. You had Mobb Deep.

These guys had cornered the rap game off. And also Biggie, and many others. So the competition was severe for me to put out the next record.

On KDot’s ascension in the game: I think he got it. I know he got it. There’s no way he can mess it up because the love he has from the game is so large that he can almost mumble on the record and it’s going to be in rhythm and it’s going to be next level. So he’s in a great place because, again, there’re so many single artists that the album artist just holds up as a whole different kind of value. And he’s that kind of guy. So whatever he does, in my opinion, will be appreciated but at the same time he knows he has to bring it. It’s about challenges, right? Life’s about challenges. In this game it’s about challenges.

On comparison: No one else can be Kendrick but Kendrick. This is what I been trying to pump to people when people like compare me to Rakim. You can’t compare me to Rakim. There can never be another Rakim.

But you can’t compare no one to me either. There’s only one me. Everybody, we’re inspired by each other but we come into our own and we have our own things to put out.

On the love of music: There’s not many like him. He’s a breath of fresh air. His shit is genius. This dude’s a rhyming animal.

I feel like he’s going to be one of the most important writers of our time as we watch him go forward.

Without a question, you can already see that. It’s definitely a high that I always get from the music.

The business is the business, but there’s nothing like that high when you’re recording.

Advice to KDot: It’s like, “Yo, you know you’re like one of the most important guys out here in the world, now go make an album,” That’s a lot of pressure to have, but so what? Just say to yourself, “So what? Yeah, I’m that dude. I got music to make.”

You’ll never be bigger than hip-hop. I wanna be big but I’ll never be bigger than hip-hop. If I become bigger than hip-hop, then I’m Madonna, I’m a diva. I know plenty divas in this shit, new artists and old.

FIFTY SHADES OF BEY While U.S. talk show host Wendy Williams recently weighed in on the swirling divorce rumours, R&B star Beyonce continues slaying in the industry.

Williams said that the public puts pressure on the power couple’s marriage.

“I think that if they do get a real divorce it won’t happen any time soon. I say in like two or three years.

But something tells me that it might be never. They’ll just live apart silently,” she commented on her talk show.

“People love their love. You know us, the general population I mean, we put pressure on them too. We love them. I love their love.”

Despite all the drama, the singer has recorded a stripped down version of her hit 2003 single “Crazy in Love’ for the steamy “Fifty Shades of grey” movie soundtrack. King Bey provides a sultry version of the track, which is transformed into a dark, sinister ballad.

The movie is due out on Valentine’s Day 2015. It stars Rita Ora (as Christian Grey’s sister), along with actors Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson.

ATLANTA EXES The ex-wife of R&B superstar Usher Raymond, Tameka Raymond (nee Foster), is set to appear in the highly anticipated TV show “Atlanta Exes.” A stylist by profession, the 43-year old mother of 5 was married to the “Burn” singer in a private ceremony in 2007. Usher filed for divorce two years later, citing irreconcilable differences.

The couple’s divorce was finalized in November 2007.

The high-profile relationship’s nasty end was dragged out in media reports following a custody battle for the couple’s two sons. Usher was eventually awarded primary custody in 2012.

In the TV show, Tameka is no holds barred when she discusses the end of her marriage and the loss of her son Kile Glover. In the teaser to the programme, she says, “Losing my marriage. That was my first death.

My heart was drug out onto the ground. The public laughed at me.”

“I’m moving out of the marital home that I lived in with my ex-husband, Usher Raymond. Losing my marriage, and then a year later, losing my son, my pain runs a lot deeper than the other women’s pain,” she reveals.

She shares the spotlight with Monyetta Shaw (Neyo) and Torrei Hart (Kevin Hart) in the show, which premieres August 18 on VH1.

ACTOR JESSIE EISENBERG VISITS WAR-TORN ISRAEL

“The Social Network” actor Jessie Eisenberg recently made a trip to war-torn Israel and made an appearance at Tel Aviv’s Beit Lessin Theater where a Hebrew adaptation of his 2013 Off-Broadway play “ The Revisionist” premiered.

The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration imposed a ban on flying to Israel shortly after the actor arrived in the country.

He commented,’ if there was any sign that would be endangered somehow, I would have hesitated to come, but that wasn’t the case.” Although he admitted that his visit may have been ill-timed, he added,” Israel is a wonderful country, and it is an unfortunate time of course, for people living here, but for me this has been a very good week.”

He also made stops in Jerusalem and the northern cities of Acre and Haifa during his stay. As the body count continues to rise in the southern regions of the country, safety instructions were relayed at the premiere in case of a rocket attack from Hamas-governed Gaza.

The “Now You See Me” star has been cast to play villain Lex Luthor in “Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice.” The film also stars Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck and Israeli actress Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman. The movie is due for release in May 2016.

NAS FINDS HIS ROOTS “Life is Good” rapper Nas is uncovering his past in the 10-part PBS series “Finding Your Roots” which will air in September.

The Queens rapper’s ancestry is traced back to 1859. Describing how he felt when he saw documentation from that year for one of his ancestors being sold as a slave, he said,” First I was enraged when I look at the bill of sale. I was like, the guy that owned property owes me some cash. My people made him really wealthy, so maybe I should find his family and talk.”

As he looked at a portrait of his ancestor’s slave owner, he said.” This is the face my ancestors looked at every day.

And now I’m looking into their world.”

Hosted by Henry Louis Gates Jr., the series will also feature Ben Affleck, Jessica Alba, Tina Fey, Stephen King and Derek Jeter.

The post that set the tone for more wacky Instagram posts by Chris Rellas (IG: Copylab) was of a photo of the iconic painting “Girl with a Pearl Earring.” Only, instead of the pearl, Rellas cleverly photoshopped the image to include a Chanel logo earring.

We loved this one here, with Jesus clutching a Hermes wallet, but there are many more with paintings altered to include contemporary fashion garments and accessories from famous fashion labels such as Givenchy, Prada, Balmain and Celine.

BOYS OF SOWETO TRAVERSE JOZI WEARING PALLADIUM BOOTS

Young people in Mzansi are known for coming up with fresh, unique concepts, which are usually stylishly packaged.

One such concept is the Palladium Explorer Series.

Fashion brand Palladium Boots were featured in a video, following young fashion collective Boys of Soweto. The crew is seen strutting around Soweto and making their way to the Jozi CBD. Their blog (boysofsoweto.tumblr.com) explains that they are a group that expresses who they are through their unique fusion and love of fashion. This exploration was directed and produced by Jeffrey Rikhotso in capturing the inspiration behind the Boys of Soweto and their surrounds.

ROBIN WILLIAMS: ONE- OF- A- KIND MAGICAL PERFORMER Renowned for roles in Good Will Hunting, Mrs Doubtfire, Dead Poets Society and many more memorable films, Robin Williams, comedian and actor touched generations with his artistry. The much-loved Hollywood icon’s work has extended over a number of decades and has garnered critical acclaim and awards. One such award was the Academy Awards for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of Dr. Sean Maguire in Good Will Hunting.

One of his most memorable roles was of a struggling actor and divorced father who assumes the identity of a British nanny to be closer to his children, in the 1993 hit Mrs. Doubtfire.

On August 11, 2014, the legendary actor lost his battle with depression. He was found dead at his home following an apparent suicide. His wife released a statement, saying, “As he is remembered, it is our hope the focus will not be on Robin’s death, but on the countless moments of joy and laughter he gave to millions.”

Born July 21st in 1951, Williams’ career began in 1972. His rise to fame began in 1978 in his role as the alien Mork in the TV series Mork & Mindy. He went on to feature in box office hits Popeye (1980), Hook (1991), Aladdin (1992), Mrs. Doubtfire (1993), Jumanji (1995), The Birdcage (1996), Night at the Museum (2006) and Happy Feet (2006).

In 1973 he was one of only 20 students accepted into the freshman class at Julliard and one of only two students to be accepted by John Houseman into the Advanced Program at the school that year; the other was Christopher Reeve. His career as a stand- up comedian began in the early 1970s. His show ‘Robin Williams LIVE on Broadway’ (2002) broke many long held records for a comedy show.

The thrice married father had an addiction to cocaine during the late 1970s and early 1980s. The death of his friend and the birth of his eldest son prompted him to

quit drugs and alcohol. He commented, “Was it a wakeup call? Oh yeah, on a huge level. The grand jury helped too.”

He later relapsed in 2003 and checked himself into a substance- abuse rehabilitation centre in Newberg, Oregon in 2006. Psychologist Julie Cerel said Williams was known to have bipolar disorder, depression and problems with drug abuse.

US President Barack Obama said Williams was “one of a kind,” and someone who “ended up touching every element of the human spirit.”

Online tributes continued to pour in from fans and costars in the hours following his death. Steven Spielberg, who worked with him on “Hook” issued a statement: “Robin was a lightning storm of comic genius and our laughter was the thunder that sustained him. He was a pal and I can’t believe he’s gone.”

Chris Columbus, director of Mrs.Doubtfire and Bicentennial Man issued a statement which captured the essence of Robin’s contribution as an artist: “To watch Robin’s work, was a magical and special privilege. His performances were unlike anything any of us had ever seen, they came from some spiritual and otherworldly place. He truly was one of the few people who deserved the title of ‘genius.’

Fellow actor Kevin Spacey mourned Williams on facebook, posting: “Robin Williams made the world laugh & thrive. I will remember & honor that. A great man, artist and friend. I will miss him beyond measure.”

Williams was 63 years old at the time of his death. His film, comedic and theatrical legacy will continue to be celebrated all over the world.

1990s R&B GROUP REUNITES FOR NEW ALBUM

First it was Wu-Tang Clan, New Edition and Bone Thugs and Harmony. Now yet another 1990s group is gearing up to reunite. Sisters With Voices (SWV) is back in studio working on an album they are obligated to finish.

According to WE, “Coko, Taj and Lelee are still plagued with problems from their past and present. Continuing to deal with management issues, the ladies are obligated to record a new album which means setting aside their differences and coming together as a creative unit. The pressure to make their album a success leads them to return to therapy forcing the ladies to dig much deeper into what’s driving them apart.”

MASE LEAVES CHURCH AND RETURNS TO RAP Mase told RapFix Live back in 2012 that he was glad he turned to church and gave up his hip hop career. “I would try to talk to girls and they would ask me about the Bible, so my player lifestyle was just shut down.”

Pastor has left his church and is set for a return to the hip hop world. TMZ reported that Mase has severed ties with the thousands of followers and has stopped preaching to solely pursue his rap career.

“It was a total weird journey but it was worth it,” he said.

The former Bad Boy Records star faced a lot of scrutiny from his churchgoers after they found out that he tried to keep his divorce a secret.

Two years later, reports have surfaced claiming that the KANYE WEST DETAILS NEW ALBUM Kanye West recently revealed to GQ that he hopes to release an album this year. The follow-up album to the Yeezus release would “most likely be in September.”

The rapper and producer said he has a single titled “all Day” that he had hoped to put out “in the next couple of weeks, just to have something up and running.”

He also said the album took nine months to make and that he was planning on scrapping the direction he had been taking on the new record.

“I got a new song that’s so good that the album has to be balanced against it.”

He went on to tell GQ that the second verse on “New Slaves” was still “the best rap verse of all time.” He added, “It’s the Coming To America or Anchorman of a verse: You know, it’s got the funny shit. It’s got the antagonization. It’s got patterns. It’s got social and political consciousness. It’s got struggle. It’s got bravado.

It’s everything that a rap verse is supposed to be.”

The highly anticipated film is due for release this month. Based on the incredible life story of the Godfather of Soul, the film will give a fearless look inside the music, moves and moods of James Brown, taking audiences on the journey from his impoverished childhood to his evolution into one of the most influential figures of the 29th century.

James Joseph Brown was born on May 3, 1933 and passed away on December 25, 2006 and was considered the Godfather of Soul.

The film stars Chadwick Boseman, Nelson Ellis, Dan Aykroyd, Viola Davis, Keith Robinson, Octavia Spencer and Jill Scott.

Lead actor Chadwick Boseman recently told billboard.com that he initially ‘didn’t want to try’ playing James Brown. Director Tate Taylor spent two months convincing Boseman to take on the role. Co-star Jill Scott, who plays Brown’s second wife Deedee, told The Hollywood Reporter, “He worked so hard; he practiced five hours a day- every day. Mario Fortino Alfonso Moreno Reyes was a Mexican comic film actor and has been referred to as the “Charlie Chaplin of Mexico.” His life is the subject of the film, directed by Sebastian del Amo. It stars Oscar Jaenada, who portrays a young Mario Moreno attempting to gain respect and make a living as an actor, and award-winning actor Michael Imperioili as Mike Todd, an American film producer struggling to film his masterpiece. The film is centered in Moreno’s personal life, and in the development of Todd’s Golden Globe Award-winning 1956 film Around the World in 80 Days.

The movie is due for an August 29 release.

MILES AHEAD Following an indiegogo campaign, actor Don Cheadle who portrayed a noble hero in Hotel Rwanda, will be portraying jazz musician Miles Davis in a biopic called Miles Ahead.

This marks Cheadle’s directorial debut. He also co-wrote the script with Steven Baigelman, Stephen J. Rivele and Christopher Wilkinson.

The film will capture the 5 year span where Davis stopped making music as well as his turbulent marriage to Frances Taylor Davis.

Cheadle explained in 2012, “It’s not a biopic per se. It’s a gangster pic. It’s a movie that Miles Davis would have wanted to star in.

Without throwing history away, we’re trying to shuffle it and make it more cubist. The bulk of it takes place in ’79. In a period where he actually wasn’t playing. But we traverse a lot of his life, but it’s not a cradle to grave story.”

Now shooting in Cincinnati, the biopic costars Ewan McGregor, Michael Stuhlbarg and Emayatzy Corinealdi. No release date has been confirmed yet.

Bontle Modiselle, performer and lead actress in SA’s first dance movie tells us about the film:

Tell us about how you snagged the role of Khanyi in the movie?

How I got the role of Khanyi was honestly destiny at work; God’s will more than anything else. Auditions for the film were hosted at Rosebank’s Dance Junction.

I was in the same venue but next door rehearsing for a commercial I was cast in. I had a different working relationship with Paul Modjadji, the choreographer of the film.

So when I went next door to try speak to him, the intention was not to be scouted or auditioned, but to enquire about our work. But it being a “right place, right time” type of setting, that’s where the director Scottnes Smith’s interest in me sparked. The rest is pretty much history.

In the South African context, how significant do you think it is for this movie to be released this particular year?

The film and it’s story are complementary to the 20 years of democracy and everything worth celebrating.

Celebrating our national milestone and celebrating the ability to unapologetically do what we’re meant to without limitations.

I feel that is what describes today’s South African and the film portrays that person through different characters. So it is relevant to our progress from our history and strongly relatable to our present, shown through two artistic visuals Barcoded Magazine forms, dance and acting on film.

How gruelling were the dance scenes you had to shoot?

The training was gruelling physically, psychologically and emotionally. We had about 3 months of training, and in no way were we allowed to assume that because dance is our bread and butter, that the dancing in the film would be easy.

To shoot a particular dance scene 5 or more times over for different angles and purposes with the same vigour and energy as the first shot isn’t for the faint hearted but the more tiring it felt, the more passionate it became. With that said, there are many dance scenes for everyone to enjoy.

Why do you think it’s taken so long for a South African dance movie to be made?

It could be the assumption that it just “couldn’t work” for the SA market or that possibly investors wouldn’t fund a dance project. I don’t know honestly. All I know for sure is that we did it first.

What did you love most about the filming process?

I loved the fact that even though the day was “scripted”, the surprise of not knowing how it would manifest was thrilling. As well, I thought I knew exactly who I was in this industry, but everyday on set through my co-cast, director, celebrity appearances, the crew and through the dancing itself, I got introduced to a different part of me. That was awesome.

As a performer, would you like to feature in similar projects in future?

Without a doubt, I’d love to feature on similar projects like this in the future, on a global scale, even if it wasn’t in film but on stage. Absolutely yes.

If you were to describe yourself in 5 words, what would they be?

Vigorous. Patient. Honest in my work. Humble. Open-minded but detailed.

What’s your take on the deep issues explored in the film?

Everyone has a truth, whether you choose to acknowledge or embrace it or not. Everyone has a passion that sees them through everything and there is an indescribable beauty in reconciling with what or who you want to stay upset with, including yourself. That is explored, both in dance and the storyline, in the film. It’s a story we can all somewhat relate to.

What can people expect from you in the near future?

You can expect more dancing and more acting from me across different platforms. Expect to see me making more media related appearances. Ill be doing choreography as well as working on my own productions, being featured, supporting and leading in more SA and African productions, be it music, dance, sport or anything entertainment related.

Born Elnathan Sidu in the Western Cape, Nubia Soul attributes the motivation behind her music to human beings’ ever-evolving journey. She has been working smartly and efficiently in order to market her debut album, titled “Love Chronicles.”

Released digitally, the album is described by her as a fusion of R&B, neo soul, African poetry and deep house music.

Produced by Thabang Madisha, it’s available on iTunes, Amazon and the Nokia Music Store.

With a background in civil engineering, the move to a full time career might seem daunting, but following her passion was a shift she made with a burning desire to succeed. For her this meant educating herself on the nitty gritties of the industry in order to make a career out of her love of music and poetry. Now armed with self-assurance and skill, she continues to work on being one of the best. She tells us a bit more about herself:

BM: So you decided to take the plunge! Independent artist. How was that experience for you? Or did you have a solid plan of action going in?’

NS: I was aware that I am marching into unfamiliar territory, which is about the survival of the fittest. I didn’t have a solid plan at first but through patience, wisdom and composure I learned a lot. I worked hard and smart to get to where I am and I will still work hard and smart to tread on national and international grounds.

BM: You’ve named Nina Simone, Zonke, Fourplay and the likes of Dwele as influences. Do you have a specific genre to which you classify “Love Chronicles?”

NS: Love Chronicles is a mixture of RnB, Neo Soul, African poetry and deep house music so to classify it would be an injustice. This album is soulful in any form.

BM: Did you write all the tracks, or did you have contributions from other songwriters?

NS: There is nothing wrong with the contribution of other songwriters. I wrote all the tracks from the first one to the last because I know through experience that no-one one knows your story better than you.

BM: With a name like “Love Chronicles,” is it safe to assume the main theme you explore in the album is Love?

NS: Yes indeed but what I talk about are the attributes of love and not the definition of it. I am trying to paint the colour of love in the hearts and minds of the people in a world that has gone cruel and cold.

BM: Do you think it’ll be easier for soul artists to sell using a digital platform like you did?

NS: It is easier and it will be easier to sell your music online because the world is going digital but you still need to have physical copies for people who haven’t had the privilege of using the Internet.

BM: Tell us about your writing process?

NS: I meditate upon the goodness of Jehovah by admiring his creation and that clears my mind from all the clutter.

From then on I observe my surroundings and listen to both silent and audible conversations with a philosophical point of view, and then finally a story suffices. It may sound like hard work but it isn’t because I was trained from an early age to think and observe.

BM: What’s one of your earliest childhood memories related to your love of music?

NS:

My journey began when Reuben (my father) used to use music as a form of alternative punishment. At the 49

age of 5 I would get locked up in the room with choir members and no one explained the music language at that time.

I didn’t know that my father was teaching me virtue through the art of song and rhythm, and music became my world of wisdom and reality. Since then I never looked back. Music is my eternal jewel which was given to me as a gift from my creator, and the rest is said to be history.

BM: Which artists would you love to collaborate with in the near future?

NS: Many national and international artists of any race, colour or creed such as La Flur, Simphiwe Dana, Putuma, Erykah Badu, Jill Scott, Salif Keita just to mention a few.

BM: What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned as an artist NS: A. Being an independent artist is like starting a company from ground up and that means you have to think like a CEO. Without proper mentoring you would end up making money for other people and later on getting exploited.

Making a name for yourself also requires a lot of sacrifice with the major sacrifices being time and money. You have to make a conscious decision to invest into your craft.

Resources are also a challenge for an independent artist because not much information is put out there for your use therefore keeping your ear to the ground and attending workshops will propel you forward.

You have to be aware that not all people have heard about you and finding the right manager is not an easy task to create awareness about you. Sometimes others who know you might not like what you do.

Lastly if you want longevity in this industry, you have to be calm, patient and not be haste to agree to any offer presented before you, and these are my challenges. These are the lessons learnt.

BM: What’s next for Nubia Soul? What big moves will you be making next?

NS: I am currently working on my next project which I am focusing on penetrating the global market starting here at home.

Secondly, I have registered my own company “House of Nubia Soul” which to me is a big deal as an independent artist. I am also part of an up and coming show “The Platform Show” which gives a platform for independent artists to share their music with the masses. Lastly I have a few collaborations lined up with hip hop artists.

ANIMATED FEATURE ABOUT HILLBROW IN THE WORKS Three contemporary Johannesburg –based characters whose lives are interlinked by the abuse of HIV medication, efavirenz, as a recreational hallucinogenic drug are being brought to life in an animated feature titled “Hillbrow.” Pateus Xandau took an interest in the topic and undertook research on the issue. “I spent a lot of time in the inner-city of Johannesburg interviewing dealers, policemen, addicts, sex workers, strippers, doctors, clinic councillors and people from drug rehab centres.

These characters were so interesting and their stories so intense, that for me it was a no brainer that I had to write a film. “On why he chose to use animation, he believes, “It has a way of making heavy subject matter more digestible and ‘artistic’ and therefore more impactful on an audience.”

Titshala, Rochelle and Steyn are the three main characters in the story.

“The main inspiration for the look is ‘outside’ or ‘native’ art. The type of artists who, essentially untrained, do road side barber-shop posters, shebeen signs or spaza shop banners. I think this style will marry well with the stay and subject matter,” says Xandau. The team is seeking financing for the film and the project was invited to pitch to an audience of industry specialists at the 2014 Annecy International Animation Film Festival in June. www.hillbrow.tv will have more information about progress.

Well the good folks from “Invisible Borders” are behind the on-going annual travel/ art project which started in 2009.

Artists are urged to submit entries before the August 15 deadline. A month later, a shortlist will be complied and final selection will be made on 15 October 2014.

Works should ideally be proposed for specific spaces in the Cape Town CBD. Works can be performance, temporary installation, conceptual, aural, visual and inter-disciplinary.

ART IN A TIME OF WAR

A new exhibition, titled “Here and Elsewhere” opened at the New Museum in New York City spotlighting the work of 45 Arab artists from over 15 countries. Palestinian artists Khaled Jarrar was denied exit from the West Bank in July in order to attend the show’s opening.

Ironically, Jarrar’s submission was his award-winning film, “Infiltrators” with documents the experience of Palestinians as they try to cross into Jerusalem from the West Bank.

“For me, I don’t do art for show but for the sense of responsibility,” he says.

His experience involved being stopped by Israeli officials citing “security reasons” and being prevented from crossing the only entry and exit point for Palestinians occupying the West Bank- the Allenby Bridge.

He explained how he felt in that moment, “I felt racism on the part of the security at Allenby Bridge. When this one soldier was talking to his superior officer and I understood what he said (‘zezevel’), I shouted at him that I was no ‘zevel’ [Hebrew for ‘garbage’] and he was impolite to call

Following the critical discussions that have animated contemporary art in recent years, the exhibition does not propose a fixed definition of Arab art or a distinctive regional style. “Here and Elsewhere” works against the notion of the Arab world as a homogeneous or cohesive entity.

The exhibition which ends on 28 September 2014 highlights works that often have conceptual or aesthetic references to the Arab world, yet also extend well beyond.

MUSEUM FOR AFRICAN ART SCALES BACK SPENDING

Originally scheduled to open in 2009, the Museum for African Art has had to cut their building project budget by $40 million. Instead of 16 000 square feet of gallery space, there will now only be 9600. Chief financial officer Phil Conte who was hired by the museum in 2012 to help the floundering project admitted, “We had to think differently.”

Trustees hoped that they could attract new donors, even resorting to renaming it the “Africa Center.” Elsie McCabe Thompson took charge in1997 and aimed to move the tiny museum and collection to 110th street and Fifth

Avenue New York. She also managed to raise $75 million and believed, “Africa deserves the best that we could give it.”

After refusing to downsize her plans for the museum, she resigned ten years later.

The new design includes multipurpose spaces that will allow for more varied fund-raisers. Although the building has faced challenges, the new museum continues to be transformed.

SAVE THE DATE- PERFORMANCE ART WITH A TWIST

Russian performance artist Mischa Badasyan recently announced a project titled “Save the Date.” The Berlin-based artist plans to fornicate with a new person for 365 days.

The project is described as “a durational performance that involves sexual intercourse with a new partner every day for a year in “non-places.” He goes on to describe these “non-places” as “supermarkets, shopping malls, airports and other largely anonymous spots where people lose a sense of identity and feel like they don’t belong.”

The catch is: he’s only looking for male partners.

And his dates won’t be told of his physical intentions.

The 26 year-old, who has admitted that the project is biographical work, is interested in the relationship between sex and loneliness and plans to have safe sex in every encounter.

He regards this performance as his “most sophisticated and dangerous work of art, in terms of mental health.”

He’ll also be creating photo and video installations, filming a documentary about the experience and building a sculpture from his bed sheets as well as other items that remind him of his encounters.

PREMATURE END TO “TUPAC MUSICAL” HOLLER IF YA HEAR ME Popularly billed as the “Tupac Musical on Broadway,” “Holler If Ya Hear Me” has ended its run at Broadway. The show, starring Saul Williams closed after one month and 55 performances. He starred as an ex-con in a Midwestern city trying to right his life. Williams recently told Rolling Stone why he thinks the show ended.

On generic stories: The idea of having a play that centers around, How do you stop the cycles of gun violence in our community?

It’s weird to hear someone feel like the story is generic when it’s the front page of every fucking paper to date.

And when you look at the reviews and compare them to everything from ‘Do the right thing’ to ‘Menace II Society’, it’s always the same fucking review. themed play and placed it on a Eurocentric stage. The problems you’ll face are larger than you think.”

On if the show will return in different forms: It’s clear that Tupac is never going to die. I have no idea what Eric is up to, but they went into this knowing that they could have started with a tour before Broadway, but they wanted that Broadway stamp and this is the cost of that stamp. Anything that involves struggle involves finance. America’s been on the wrong side of history lots of times. We were allies with Germany until Charlie Chaplin came out with The Great Dictator and then we were like, “Holy fuck” and we switched sides. When you do something fresh and new, you’re going to face obstacles and I promise you this story isn’t over.

THE VOICE OF ANNE FRANK Initially produced in 2007, ‘The Voice of Anne Frank’ has had a successful run. It will now be showing at the Market Theatre from 22-29 August 2014 at the Barney Simon.

Lead actress Mirenka Cechova has mesmerized audiences and critics alike. The show has also received a number of prestigious awards.

Cechova’s portrayal of Anne Frank is presented in conjunction with a combination of dance, live music and narration. The performance is a mono-drama with live accompaniment by cellist Nancy Jo Snider standing in

as the symbol of Kitty, the invented addressee of Anne’s letters. Cechova extends her talents through portrayals of not only Anne herself but also all the other figures of the diary.

Critic LaToya Newman notes, “Communities the world over have heard of Anne Frank’s stay, but we’ve never heard her voice. This beautifully written piece transforms Anne Frank into more than someone we know of through historical texts- you get to know the young girl behind the story.”

MARIKANA- THE MUSICAL The State Theatre in Pretoria presents “Marikana- The Musical” next month (29 September to 19 October 2014.)

The show is an adaptation by Aubrey Sekhabi of a novel entitled “We are going to kill each other today. The Marikana Story” by Felix Dlangamandla, Thanduxolo Jika, Lucas Ledwaba, Sebabatso Mosamo, Athandwa Saba and Leon Sediki.

The show will also go back to the villages and townships where they came from and give faces and names to the fallen brothers, sons, fathers and uncles.

JADE DOREEN WALLER- URBAN ART SENSATION Young urban artist Jade Doreen Waller is causing a stir with her unique work which is deeply rooted in Urban Contemporary Art. Her multi-layered paintings provide a glimpse into her thoughts, with a plethora of symbols which represent an information overload. Her work often displays a juxtaposition of objects in unexpected arrangements. The artworks she creates speak to the discourse of Pop Surrealism and urban street culture. Her work is a display of elements which have come to define our urban existence: toys, pills, food, body parts, games, cartoon icons, accessories etc.

Recently invited to exhibit at urban gallery Graffik, in Notting Hill, London, the Capetonian artist has successfully blended dark moods and dream-like images to create fascinating pieces. Her alluring work is made of enchanting collages and she has described her process as “working on many different on-going projects which branch not only into the ‘art world,’ but also the fashion industry,

public/community work (painting and installation) and illustration.

She’s described her work as, “symptomatic of an ‘information overload’ pertaining to the nature of how we currently exist, as well as my own perception of my surroundings, and how I process this ‘overload’ in my own mind.”

Her work often also features elements of graffiti. Of this features, she has commented, “I admire the process and its relevance to current societies around the world. Other than its visual appeal, which I find inspiring, I am drawn to how it connects people and has its own unique form or method of delivering freedom of speech.” She’s admitted gravitation towards fine art, which has become a full-time career. With more exciting works in the pipeline, she also has a solo exhibition in Cape Town lined up for 2015.

VODACOM LAUNCHES SMART-KICKA Cellphone giants Vodacom have launched a new low cost smartphone. The handset which retails at about $50 has been debuted in an attempt to amp up internet usage among consumers.

The Smart Kicka comes with a 3.5 inch, 320 x 480 pixel screen, a 2 mega pixel camera, 4GB of storage and 512 MB of RAM. Running on Android 4.4 KitKat, the latest Google operating system, it also comes with an FM radio with 3.5 mm audio jack. Bluetooth and Wi-Fi come standard with the handset.

At a retail of R549, the smartphone is reasonable for the average South African and the bundles that come with the device include 10 minutes of airtime for R2, 60 minutes of airtime for R4 and 50 MB of data for R3.

FASHION BRAND LAUNCHES NEW APP

Fashion titans Hermes have recently launched ‘Tie Break,’ a new app that includes an array of tutorials, GIFs and fun games. The app aims to cater to its’ users’ neckwear needs.

Available for free in both English and French, the app can be used by iPhone users with iOS4.3 only at the moment. The nifty app also reveals some of the brand’s production secrets.
