At Middlesbrough College and TTE we pride ourselves on working closely with schools from across the North East and North Yorkshire to provide information on the options available to school leavers.

The Schools Team are available throughout the academic year, covering a range of activities designed to challenge, stretch and motivate students, and encourage them to research the options available to them upon completing school.

Middlesbrough College offers a wide range of A Levels, vocational courses, T Levels and apprenticeships, which aim to prepare students for their chosen career path. We pride ourselves on being able to offer an extensive variety of courses so that no matter what education level students are at, we can take students higher and provide a course that is right for them.

TTE provides STEM related training programmes, through both full-time and apprenticeship courses, that employers within the local Tees Valley area and across the UK are looking for. These courses include process operations and engineering, mechanical, instrumentation, electrical and wind turbine.

TTE specialises in the world-wide delivery of bespoke technical training to many industries such as oil and gas, manufacturing, mining etc.

Our team link up with departments to provide answers to any questions about the courses, facilities or student benefits available. We can also help students to fill out our application form or arrange visits to tour our facilities and speak to tutors. We want to make the student transition from school to further education as comfortable as possible by providing support and guidance and we aim to find students the right course whilst also offering a valuable student experience.

Logan Analise

Analise Williams earned a Distinction grade in her T Level Health qualification.

She is heading to Teesside University to study for a degree in Paramedic Practice.

“My favourite part of the T Levels course has definitely been the practical learning, especially the hands-on work in the second year, and of course the placement. I’m a practical person, which is why I chose T Levels, because I wanted to learn on the job.”

Aaron Burton secured A*’s in mathematics and further mathematics and an A in his physics A Levels and progressed to Durham University to study for a degree in mathematics.

“The support I’ve had from my tutors here at the College has been great, they’ve given me the guidance I needed to succeed in my A Levels and built my confidence when I was struggling. I’m so pleased with my results and can’t wait to get to Durham University and eventually launch a career in statistics.”

Logan Riley earned himself a Merit on his Design Surveying and Planning for Construction T Level course. He is now starting his apprenticeship at Rainham Industrial Services as a Quantity Surveyor and is looking at doing part time study at Northumbria University to further his qualifications.

Presentations, tours & visits The MC Presentation

Overview: This group presentation gives students an insight into their future at Middlesbrough College and the range of options, facilities, support and courses available to them including A Level, Apprenticeship, Vocational routes and T Levels.

MC Connect

Overview: MC Connect allows students to gain an insight into being a full-time student, meet peers on the same course, meet our first class teaching staff and gain vital information, advice and guidance on our student support package. Applicants will be invited to sessions.

Discovery Days Northern Skills

Overview: This presentation aims to raise awareness of our apprenticeship and training arm, Northern Skills. Students will learn about apprenticeships, the application process and employer expectations. This can be tailored to suit your needs and delivered in a variety of formats including team building exercises, interactive workshops or sector specific presentations.

The A Level Presentation

Overview: This presentation introduces students to MC6, our specialist Sixth Form Centre and the range of A Levels offered.

College Tours

Overview: Bespoke tours of the whole campus are available for students. Students will have the opportunity to see our outstanding facilities, meet curriculum staff and gain an insight into curriculum areas.

TTE presentation

Overview: This presentation gives students an insight into their future at TTE and the range of options, facilities, support and courses available to them including full-time course and Apprenticeship routes.

1 full school day (9:30am-2.00pm) (See page 5 for dates) Overview: This interactive day provides students with an insight into two of their main areas of interest. The session allows students to be equipped with information, skills and knowledge to make the important decision as they enter Year 11. Transport and lunch for all staff and students are provided. Drop-in Sessions

Overview: We can provide drop-in sessions in school at a time to suit you. This offers students the perfect opportunity to ask any questions about their future options and complete applications if required. We can create curriculum subject focussed drop-ins and bring our teaching staff to answer questions for students interested in specific courses.

Mock Interview Days

Overview: We understand the importance of mock interviews to support your students and we're more than happy to attend as an interviewer and to give helpful feedback to your students.

TTE Taster Sessions

Overview: TTE Tasters allows students to gain an insight into being a full-time student, meet peers on the same course, meet our first class teaching staff and gain vital information, advice and guidance on our student support package.

Transition Workshops

Overview: We take the transition from school to College very seriously so we have a team of staff who can provide any relevant information required. Our team will liaise with the school and students to ensure all needs are met.

Application Workshops

Overview: This workshop informs students about Middlesbrough College courses and assists students with completing application forms. These workshops can be offered in conjunction with any of the aforementioned activities, or as a stand-alone activity.

Master Classes

This interactive quiz kit system offers students the chance to learn about College life in a fun and engaging way and learn more about post-16 choices. This will encourage students to work outside the box and engage to win small prizes.

Overview: Our master classes provide an insight into each subject, allowing students to explore various aspects of each course in preparation for their future. These can be delivered in school or College, where possible we would prefer to deliver these sessions in College to allow students to have a realistic view of their chosen subject, including the facilities they would study in.

Meet Jeanette Chapman, our Transitions Coordinator!

Transitions Programme

Support with your at risk Year 11 students transitioning in College We can work together to identify any students who have applied and may be at risk of not progressing into further education after school or whom may need some extra support and help.

We provide personalised support in helping students make the transition to College, including help completing application forms, 1:1 support at interviews and enrolment and bespoke campus tours.

We are also able to provide more specialist support with our safeguarding and welfare team who can help with emotional support and assist with any learning difficulties your students may have. We can also ensure that students are assigned a Student Welfare Officer who will mentor them when they begin College in September.

We provide this programme to all schools in Middlesbrough, Redcar and Stockton and will contact you to discuss in January.

Career Subject Specific Days (Year 7 - 10) Career specific subject days include hands on workshops, talks from employers and an insight to the department facilities, kit and equipment which is used in the sector.

These run annually and include careers such as Engineering, Digital, Sports and Public Services and Health & Care. Places are offered to schools and transport and lunch is provided.

I’ve received free travel to College which has been a huge bonus as I live in Hurworth near Darlington. I’ve been able to use the buses for free and travel on the train for free too!

The College also offers a free laptop scheme - MC Click. I’ve taken advantage of this and have had a brand new laptop throughout the year to support me with my studies. The device is up-to-date with the latest software and has allowed me to develop my digital skills, plus I’ve been able to work on the train when I’ve been commuting into College!”

Discovery Days Y10

A chance for your students to experience the courses that interest them for a day! On selected dates we will be inviting your year 10 students into College to try out a couple of course areas. Students can learn more about the subject areas that interest them, get a feel of what College life is like and meet our course tutors.

Course Levels & Entry Requirements

Levels Guide Entry Level: These courses will help students build up skills, experience and gain confidence to progress to Level 1.

No formal qualifications are needed.

Level 1: Students must have achieved an appropriate Entry Level vocational qualification and/or GCSEs at grade 2-1 (E-F) or above.

Level 2: Students must have achieved an appropriate Level 1 vocational qualification and/or GCSEs at mostly grade 3 (D) or above.

Level 3: These include A Levels, vocational qualifications (including Extended Diplomas, Diplomas, Certificates) and apprenticeships. Students must have achieved an appropriate Level 2 vocational qualification and/or four GCSEs at grade 4/5 (C) or above.

T Levels: Students must have achieved 5 GCSEs grade 5 or above (including English and maths).

Please note for some courses students will be required to start at Level 1 to gain the technical skills required.

Choosing a pathway A Levels

Choose 3 A Levels to make up the study programme.

A Levels are a great option if students are looking to progress to University. They allow students to keep their options open with focused study of three or four subjects across two years. A Levels are assessed through examinations.

A Level Mix it up programme

Choose either 2 A Levels and 1 BTEC or applied subject or 2 BTEC or applied subjects and 1 A Level.

Our Mix It Up programme allows you to combine A Levels with an A Level equivalent to create a solid foundation for further academic study.

Vocational / Technical Courses

Choose 1 vocational programme in a sector.

Vocational courses are more practical and hands on and will equip students with skills in a specific sector area which can lead to a job or to University.

Vocational courses are assessed through a series of assignments, presentations, practical observations, projects and examinations. Students will study 1 vocational course that will make up their full study programme.

Apprenticeships

Choose 1 apprenticeship vacancy.

Apprenticeships allow students to earn whilst you learn! Students will come to College alongside their job. An apprenticeship is a great choice if students are eager to earn money straight away and build their skills alongside experienced staff.

Apprenticeships are assessed through workplace observations, exams and professional discussions.

T Levels

Choose 1 T Level programme.

T Levels are a new qualification which are an alternative to A Levels. This 2 year qualification will help learners to build the future that they want. Students spend 80% of their time in the classroom and 20% of their time in the workplace, putting the skills they have learnt into action.

Every T Level student will take an industry placement that lasts at least 45 days, helping students to gain valuable experience in the workplace and allowing employers to meet the new talent in their industry.

T Levels provide the skills, knowledge and experience you need to open the door to highly skilled employment, University or an apprenticeship.

T Levels are assessed through practical employer-set projects, assignments and examinations.

Students will choose 1 T Level that will make up their full study programme.

What are T Levels?

T Levels are an alternative route into further education and are equivalent to three A Levels.

The T Level qualification trains students in practical skills and knowledge in their chosen industry, alongside core English, maths and digital skills, and a 45 day work placement with a relevant employer.

At Middlesbrough College we are offering T Level programmes in a range of sectors, including: Engineering, Construction, Digital, Healthcare, Science, Education and Childcare, Business and Theatre Operations T Levels will give students a head start in knowing what type of job they want to go into after finishing their course.

With a focus on hands-on experience, T Levels are an opportunity for employers to shape the way students are trained to meet their future needs.

T Levels progress to higher and degree level apprenticeship or technical degrees.

Apprenticeships – Earn whilst you learn !

Apprenticeships are practical, hands-on programmes designed to provide students with relevant training to kick-start their career. This is a practical route to employment and is a great way to gain what employers are looking for.

Types of apprenticeships:

Northern Skills are the apprenticeship and training arm of Middlesbrough College, we work with a huge range of employers across the North East and beyond. Our Apprenticeships Team and experienced training advisers work together to deliver apprenticeship training and assessments at all levels and have helped thousands of young people secure an apprenticeship in their chosen career, putting them on the fast track to success.

Level 2 Intermediate Apprenticeship equivalent to five GCSEs at grade 4/5 (C)

Apprenticeships will enable students to work alongside experienced staff in addition to studying for an industry recognised qualification (usually one day a week) and earn a wage at the same time.

How to apply for an apprenticeship Students can apply for an apprenticeship vacancy through Middlesbrough College! Our team can support them with their application.

Apprenticeships are competitive so students will need to ace their application and prepare for their interview, so they stand out from other applicants!

Make sure students have a Plan B! Students must apply for a full-time course in their chosen industry with Middlesbrough College so if they can’t find the right apprenticeship they are still set to study in September!

I hope to become a practice manager, and because of my apprenticeship, my potential routes to achieving that goal are amazing.

Engineering & Welding

STEM specialist College

We can take students skills higher and get them ready for industry.

Our £20m STEM Engineering Centre is a unique and inspirational space, allowing students to learn new skills in a simulated industrial site!

The STEM Centre embeds industrial competencies and behaviours into students engineering training, allowing them to experience a real work environment and become job ready when they leave us.

If you study an engineering, manufacturing or welding course with us you will have access to this facility to learn practical skills such as health and safety, which will complement your theoretical study. You will be required to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and act professionally when working onsite, just like you would in industry.

The centre will provide additional training to students studies, giving them the advantage when they leave College!

Our Institute of Technology status We are thrilled to be part of the North East Institute of Technologya leading provider of technical education! We are the only provider of IoT accredited courses in the Tees Valley.

The prestigious IoT status ensures that the College delivers high-quality technical qualifications and bespoke training and provides routes for people of all ages and existing employees to gain industry specific skills.

Abi Foy Level 3 Electrical & Electronic Engineering Previous school: The King's Academy Abi progressed to a higher-level apprenticeship with Sulzer and is now being funded through her HND qualification in Electrical Engineering. Sulzer is a global leader in fluid engineering and Abi works for the organisation as a Winder Fitter.

New TTE Centre coming September 2024!

We are so excited that our brand-new TTE Centre will be ready for September 2024!

The new facility will be based at Middlesbrough College’s Middlehaven campus and will train over 300 full-time students, 300 apprentices and 500 adults each year, alongside a thriving cohort of international students.

Application process Application completed

Once an online or paper based application has been completed for either a Middlesbrough College or TTE course these are the next steps

Admissions receive application and contact applicant and invite them in for an onsite information session

Applicant attends subject showcase event onsite with the course tutor

Applicant receives a conditional offer or is referred to an alternative course or careers guidance

Applicant is invited to attend Year 11 Connect to College tasters (these take place after school or during half term holidays)

After GCSE results day, applicant is invited to enrol online or onsite onto a course in late August ready to start their studies in September

If an applicant cannot attend their subject showcase event, they must inform the Admissions Team who will book an alternative session.

Where an applicant has accepted more than one offer, the Admissions Team will support the student with additional guidance so they can make the right choice before enrolment.

University Centre Middlesbrough Students can stay and study at Middlesbrough College's University Centre. We can take their education higher with a degree and they can stay local and save money too.

Our University Centre offers a practical alternative to a traditional University, where students are able to study University Level qualifications right up to master's level whilst benefitting from our specialist teaching environments, 1:1 support, small class sizes and activities linked to employers and industry.
