POEMS FROM THE POETRY CIRCLE

I am not a good tourist

© M. Caponi- 2025

I don’t like guided tours

I’m not a joiner or a follower

I’m not good with large groups

I’m not a regular person

I want to pause, linger, drift, where others march in lockstep and I want to keep going, where others want to stay.

Where others rush past statues I stare into their eyes, chipped stone murmuring ancient secrets through the haze.

A well-planned itinerary is resisted by my brain.

I’m easily bored by prepared speeches, detailed descriptions I can find on the internet but

I do like people and stories, so, this time in Paris, I will take a guided tour with other writers, if the voice is familiar to hear how Montmartre bled poems into white stone and sky, or to stand before the houses where Baudelaire once dreamed, even when I said I would not, I will step with others on cobblestones, between cathedrals and for once I will let the guide finish her sentences.
