Exhibition Spotlight

Portraiture
Did you know that no one knows when the oldest portrait was made? Humans have been creating portraits since they could create anything at all. Portraiture can be found in a myriad of mediums and cultures: Peruvian portrait jugs, Roman sculptures, anatomically-correct Renaissance paintings, and African ivory masks, just to name a few.

Michael Erlich Woman in Scarf
Sari Staggs Chief
Susan Lim Inner Peace

Portraits can immortalize a person (or animal!), but whether it captures their exact likeness, political beliefs, social status, emotional state, or any combination of these varies depending on the style and artist’s vision.

What about their subjects do you feel the artists captured in these portraits?
