For over a decade the Manhattan Beach Poetry Circle, a part of the Older Adult Program, has had the pleasure of working with Mira Costa students. Among other intergenerational projects, we've visited their classes, they've visited our meetings and we've held joint public readings at the Hometown Fair and elsewhere. Beginning in 2018, the Poetry Circle has invited Mira Costa students to compete in our annual Circle Awards for Excellence in Poetry Composition. This years' winners were recognized at the April 21st City Council meeting. The 9th Annual Circle Awards go to the following Mira Costa students:

Congratulations to Lily Crook, Riley Jolls, Nina Modugno, Eva Prodromides, Nika Tabrizi

Indiana by Janice Wheeler
It was hot.
A seductive sort of heat that pushed up from the ground through bushes and leaves; enveloped us, stole our breath from our mouths
His name was Buddy Hess. We called him (when did that begin?) Bloody Mess.
One of those real tough kids – you know the kind, who curse and kick and spit themselves into your life.
His older sister was crazy. The kind of crazy men like on summer nights; half lit and full of hell, teeth like small white suns, hot quick skin.
We met each day beside the lake. In the still murky water slimy green things reached out, exploring; ooze sucked at our feet, small snails.
And in the flecked firefly nights we gathered pussy willows and set them aflame, holding each as though it were a torch Smoke wandering pale in the darkness.
Do you remember how it was? How we were in love. Children, sprawled on a long white porch in Indiana.
