May Discussion: Mother, Daughter, Traitor Spy by Susan Elia MacNeal
A mother and daughter find the courage to go undercover after stumbling upon a Nazi cell in Los Angeles during the early days of World War II--a tantalizing novel from the New York Times bestselling author of the Maggie Hope series
June 1940. France has fallen to the Nazis, and Britain may be next--but to many Americans, the war is something happening "over there." Veronica Grace has just graduated from college; she and her mother, Violet, are looking for a fresh start in sunny Los Angeles. After a blunder cost her a prestigious career opportunity in New York, Veronica is relieved to take a typing job in L.A.--only to realize that she's working for one of the area's most vicious propagandists.
Overnight, Veronica is exposed to the dark underbelly of her new home, where German Nazis are recruiting Americans for their devastating campaign. After the FBI dismisses the Graces' concerns, Veronica and Violet decide to call on an old friend, who introduces them to L.A.'s anti-Nazi spymaster.

LA COUNTY VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR
The Los Angeles County Commission for Older Adults (LACCOA) and the Department of Aging & Disabilities will host the 59th Annual Older Americans' Recognition Day (OARD) Event on May 16, 2024. This year's theme is "Powered by Connection", which recognizes the profound impact that meaningful relationships and social connections have on our health and well-being. The event serves to identify older adult community members and to recognize them for their dedication and contributions to our communities. We have chosen Claudia Elliott as our Volunteer of the Year 2024.
For years, Claudia was a volunteer Ambassador at Manhattan Beach City Hall. An Ambassador sat at the main desk in the lobby at City Hall serving as the initial contact for visitors. Ambassadors answered the phones, welcomed all visitors, and provided directions and answered questions. Ambassadors also assisted with projects if requested by staff. It was when the Ambassador program ended that Claudia increased her participation as a volunteer with the Older Adult Program. She’s always been available to answer any request for assistance with grace and a smile. She has answered OAP phones, provided assistance with office tasks, answered questions and provided directions. Weekly she has provided assistance with the Lunch Bunch program, signing attendees in and taking the money. She has assisted with folding of monthly OAP newsletter to prepare it for mailing. Additionally, she has volunteered at the annual Health Fair. Congratulations Claudia and thank you!
CIRCLE AWARDS FOR EXCELLENCE IN POETRY
This year the Poetry Circle and Mira Costa students collaborated on a Poetry Book "Onward".
You can find a downloadable pdf here: https://www.manhattanbeach.gov/departments/ parks-and-recreation/older-adults-program
Powered by Connection
For over a decade the Manhattan Beach Poetry Circle, a part of your Parks and Recreation Department’s Older Adults Program, has had the pleasure of working with Mira Costa students (and especially the Creative Writing students taught by Shannon Vaughan). Among other intergenerational projects, we’ve visited their classes, they've visited our meetings, we’ve given them feedback on their writing, we’ve held joint public readings at Hometown Fair and elsewhere, and we've jointly published poetry books with both student and elder work.
Beginning in 2018, the Poetry Circle has invited Mira Costa students to compete for our annual Circle Awards for Excellence in Poetry Composition. This year's winners were recognized at the April 16th City Council meeting. The 7th Annual Circle Awards go to the following Mira Costa High School students:
Lily Boetcher
Gianna Goodman-Bhyat
Violette Ric
Bella Rawitz

POEMS FROM THE POETRY CIRCLE
SCRIPT OF FAITH CHRISTMAS DAY 2007
by Bonnie Hiller SchumannGod inspired biblical scribes
Today's scribes drive themselves crazy
Describing a spiderweb's dewy lace
Vine-ripe tomatoes mashing in the sun
Touch a pizza-loving poet to conjure
Visions of cheese and fennel seeds
Dust motes shimmy under the avocado tree
Haphazard but harmonized Wind chimes ring the truest carols of the day
Silence completes the moment
Who is to say these are not God's words?
