WHAT’S NEW
UPCOMING EVENTS
On June 30 I will be retiring from the City of Manhattan Beach. It has been an incredible 16 years working to establish the Old Adults Program (OAP). The saying “It takes a Village” has never been truer than the partnerships that have been and continue to be part of this vibrant OAP. The City, the OAP staff through the years and all the volunteers have worked together as a team. There are way many to name! I thank each and every one of you who have shared your time, talents and treasures, you are the reason that so many participate and benefit from the activities and programs OAP offers. I will miss the wonderful people that have enriched my life and I will always value those friendships. Thank you for letting me be part of your lives. Please continue to participate and advocate for programs that enrich the lives of so many. I am going to take some time to sit on my deck and play with my dog Lola!

PRESENTATION
The Friendship Foundation supports parents and families who have children and young adults with special needs by providing a safe, accepting and inclusive environment where they can enjoy sports, art, music and many other social programs with their peers. Their friendly staff and helpful volunteers create a fun experience for all. It is our belief that every person is precious and capable of love, connection and friendship.
Programs are targeted to specific age groups while some encompass a broad gathering of all ages including parents. At each program, children with special needs are paired with student volunteers for an event full of fun peer interaction. The Friendship Foundation serves to augment our local educational systems and professional therapies by creating a natural setting for individuals with special needs to practice their learned skills amongst their peers.
Today, over 36 Friendship School Clubs exist throughout the South Bay at elementary, middle, and high school levels in public, private, and charter schools. In addition to our Friendship School Clubs, we offer social and recreational programs 6 days per week, year-round. Our services reach over 2,500 students annually.
Daniel Stump, Program Development Director will introduce you to the programs, services, and social activities that the Friendship Foundation has to offer and hopefully we can partner with them on a few classes or programs.

National Parks with Jackie
National parks offer extraordinary experiences; it’s not always possible to get to a park. Take a virtual tour with us and see the glory, hear nature sounds, discuss the journey.
Denali National Park and Preserve encompasses 6 million acres of Alaska’s interior wilderness. Its centerpiece is 20,310-ft.-high Denali (formally know as Mount McKinley), North America’s tallest peak.
This is natures playground and it’s at its wildest. As you explore the terrain of tundra, spruce forest, meadows and glaciers, you will come into contact with North America’s most iconic species and apex predators. You are very likely to spot a moose and Dall sheep, or perhaps a wolf, grizzly bear, or caribou.
Visiting Denali is a little more complicated than taking a trip to other National Parks. There are fewer services and limited trails. So we will be showing a few prime videos.
Come join us! Feel free to bring snacks, watch the presentation, explore its history, people and, soak up this unique landscape. After, we can discuss this beautiful National Park.

LA COUNTY OLDER AMERICANS MONTH VOLUNTEER RECOGNITION
For the past 57 years the President, the Governor and the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors have designated the month of May as Older Americans Recognition Month. As part of this the Los Angeles County Commission for Older Adults and the Department of Againg and Disabilities ask senior centers/programs throughout the County to nominate an older adult from their community to be honored at an Annual Older Americans Recognition Event. The honorees are recognized for their dedication to community service especially as the service relates to the theme of the year's Older Americans month. The theme of the 2023 Older Americans Month is "Aging Unbound".
Jean Steinmetz is OAP's 2023 nominee. Jean is the President of the Manhattan Beach Senior Citizen Club and is very involved in activities at the Joslyn Community Center. She helps run the Club's bingo and white elephant sales. She is a member of the Senior Advisory Committee and has attended SAC meetings for five years. Walk With Me
Bettycarol Kostan
The road is long, filled with red earth ruts wagon made
Together our memories flow like fireflies
Walk with me
Capture history, another's walk, another's life, creating our fields, our harvest, our bounty
Your hand in mine remembers that a town grew
They were there teaching us
She and He were our idols, our heroes
We remember those before us
They gave us who we are
Do we leave? Do we come home again?
No, we have always been here

CINDY'S MINI BUS TRIP TO THE GROVE AND FARMER'S MARKET
"Meet me on 3rd and Fairfax" was once common expressions among Angelenos - and with good reason. At the corner of the aforementioned street you'll find both the Farmers Market and The Grove, two must-see destinations that together form a community hub of sorts, offering an abundance of dining, shopping and entertainment options.Though the Farmers Market and The Grove are, in fact, two separate entities, they have a strong synergy due to their geographic proximity to one other. Their adjacent locations make it all too easy to navigate both sites within a single visit. An electric trolley is even on-site to shuttle the less mobile between the Grove and the Farmers Market.
When: Friday, July 14
Time: 9:00am-1:00pm
Location: The Grove, 189 The Grove Drive, LA (bus leaves from the JCC)
