This talk revolves around a two-week wilderness leadership class in the Indian Himalayas organized by the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS). Guest Speaker is Gedi Minster

4. Slow and Steady — Sustainable pace beats burning out fast
5. Embrace the Wilderness — Get comfortable with discomfort and the unknown
6. Communicate Your Hot Spots — Speak up early about problems before they become crises
7. Do the Hard Things First — Front-load effort while energy is highest

This year, Darryl celebrated an incredible milestone—his 90th birthday. While many people might choose to slow down, Darryl has continued to dedicate his time, energy, and talent to the Joslyn Community Center and the Manhattan Beach senior community.
As the driving force behind the Acting Out Again program, Darryl created opportunities for older adults to perform, build confidence, make new friends, and share their creativity with others. Known for his meticulous attention to detail and commitment to excellence, he worked tirelessly to ensure every showcase was a memorable experience for participants and audiences alike.
Darryl's volunteer service has enriched the lives of countless seniors over the years. His passion, leadership, and dedication have left a lasting impact on our community, and we are grateful for all he has contributed. Congratulations to Darryl on his 90th birthday and thank you for the remarkable legacy you continue to build.

The Senior Advisory Committee (SAC) recently welcomed several new and returning members who will help guide programs, services, and activities for older adults in Manhattan Beach.
We are pleased to welcome Marilynn Holcomb as a new member of the committee. Marilynn has been an active participant in the Older Adults Program and brings valuable experience and enthusiasm to the group.
We also congratulate returning committee members Audrey Hodgson, Dayle Eisenhauer, and Linda Lytle, who were reappointed to continue their service. Their dedication and commitment have played an important role in supporting the Joslyn Community Center and advocating for the needs and interests of local seniors.
In addition, we extend our sincere gratitude to Wayne Powell for his dedicated service on the Senior Advisory Committee since 2017. Wayne's contributions, thoughtful leadership, and commitment to enhancing the lives of older adults have been greatly appreciated and have helped strengthen our senior community.
We thank all of our Senior Advisory Committee members for their volunteer service and look forward to another productive year working together to enhance programs and opportunities for older adults in our community.
For more than nine years, Cindy Schaben has been the driving force behind the Older Adult Program's popular bus trips. Cindy's journey began as a Metro tour guide, leading groups on excursions throughout Los Angeles while teaching participants how to use TAP cards and navigate the Metro system with confidence. As conditions on Metro became less senior-friendly, Dial-A-Ride stepped in to provide transportation, and Cindy's Mini Bus Trips were born. Since then, she has organized countless adventures, helping older adults explore local destinations, enjoy new experiences, and build lasting friendships. With the exception of a one-year pause during the COVID pandemic, Cindy has dedicated nearly a decade to creating memorable outings for our community. We are grateful for her enthusiasm, leadership, and many years of service. She is taking a well deserved break until October.
We are honored to receive the Community Impact Award from the Friendship Foundation, recognizing the positive impact our volunteers have made through years of friendship, inclusion, and community service. Through monthly bingo, line dancing, and special events, Joslyn Center seniors have built meaningful relationships with Friendship Foundation participants—young adults and adults with special needs. These connections have created a welcoming environment filled with laughter, encouragement, and genuine caring. We are grateful for this recognition and proud of the friendships that continue to enrich the lives of everyone involved.
Thank you to Sarah Esparza of the Friendship Foundation for this great honor!
