A MESSAGE FROM THE PARKS & RECREATION DIRECTOR

Jan Buike is retiring on June 30th after 20+ years working in Manhattan Beach, both for the City and previously with Beach Cities Health District as a Care Manager working with Older Adults. We will miss you!

Although Jan doesn’t like to draw attention to herself or be acknowledged for her service, I wanted to take the opportunity to recognize all that she has given to the City. Almost everyone in the City of Manhattan Beach knows Jan, as she has most likely helped them or one of their family members. Jan is one of the most selfless people I have ever met. She continuously gives to countless families, sharing her time (off the clock, evenings, weekends) either on a call or in person, getting the appropriate resources to those in need.

Beyond her role with the City, Jan donates countless hours through volunteerism.

• Jan has been a Rotarian for many years, leading the Rotary Cares program, providing various free construction projects to assist older adults with ramps, stairs, etc.

• She volunteers her time at many local non-profits. In particular, she continues to gathering supplies for a dog shelter, carrying on the memory of Rachael Parker, an employee that worked in the Police Department, who loved dogs.

• Other volunteer work includes helping with the homeless count, feeding the homeless, being the President of the Board of Directors for Hosteling International, and creating her own non-profit organizations to serve those in need throughout her career.

• Jan is a tireless advocate for Older Adults and people in need. Don’t get in her way!

We will miss Jan’s creative and collaborate ideas, which made the Older Adult program what it is today. Jan built the program from scratch, which is a legacy that will continue to live on, and something that she should be proud of.

Last, I wanted to recognize a few of Jan’s best characteristics-- her sense of humor, and positive outlook on life. No matter how challenging a situation, Jan always puts things in perspective and focuses on the important issues. Ultimately she is able to create smiles and laughter, even when things are tough.

Thank you Jan, for your passion and service to the community, and your friendship over the years!
