National Parks with Jackie

National parks offer extraordinary experiences; it’s not always possible to get to a park. Take a virtual tour with us and see the glory, hear nature sounds, discuss the journey.

When Theodore Roosevelt came to Dakota Territory to hunt bison in 1883, he was a skinny, young, spectacled dude from New York. He could not have imagined how his adventure in this remote and unfamiliar place would forever alter the course of the nation.

Set in the colorful canyons of the western North Dakota Badlands is a national park that deserves to be on your travel list. Without the crowds and waiting lines common to some parks, it’s easy to discover a sense of freedom at Theodore Roosevelt National Park. Park trails and drives take you to scenic vistas with stunning views of the Painted Canyon and the Little Missouri River, a petrified forest and open range populated by bison, horses, elk, prairie dogs, and other wildlife.

Come join us! Feel free to bring snacks, watch the presentation, explore its history, people and soak up this unique landscape. After, we can discuss this beautiful National Park.

A MESSAGE FROM THE PARKS & RECREATION DIRECTOR

Jan Buike is retiring on June 30th after 20+ years working in Manhattan Beach, both for the City and previously with Beach Cities Health District as a Care Manager working with Older Adults. We will miss you!

Although Jan doesn’t like to draw attention to herself or be acknowledged for her service, I wanted to take the opportunity to recognize all that she has given to the City. Almost everyone in the City of Manhattan Beach knows Jan, as she has most likely helped them or one of their family members. Jan is one of the most selfless people I have ever met. She continuously gives to countless families, sharing her time (off the clock, evenings, weekends) either on a call or in person, getting the appropriate resources to those in need.

Beyond her role with the City, Jan donates countless hours through volunteerism.

• Jan has been a Rotarian for many years, leading the Rotary Cares program, providing various free construction projects to assist older adults with ramps, stairs, etc.

• She volunteers her time at many local non-profits. In particular, she continues to gathering supplies for a dog shelter, carrying on the memory of Rachael Parker, an employee that worked in the Police Department, who loved dogs.

• Other volunteer work includes helping with the homeless count, feeding the homeless, being the President of the Board of Directors for Hosteling International, and creating her own non-profit organizations to serve those in need throughout her career.

• Jan is a tireless advocate for Older Adults and people in need. Don’t get in her way!

We will miss Jan’s creative and collaborate ideas, which made the Older Adult program what it is today. Jan built the program from scratch, which is a legacy that will continue to live on, and something that she should be proud of.

Last, I wanted to recognize a few of Jan’s best characteristics-- her sense of humor, and positive outlook on life. No matter how challenging a situation, Jan always puts things in perspective and focuses on the important issues. Ultimately she is able to create smiles and laughter, even when things are tough.

Thank you Jan, for your passion and service to the community, and your friendship over the years!

POEMS FROM THE POETRY CIRCLE

Love's Mystery

Bob Olsen

To a place where no one grows

To a place where no one goes

Where the crystal blue light flows

Behind a velvet curtain

No wishing wells to blame

Where nothing is the same

A place you have no name

I'll see you there

Where time waits on the beach

And nothing's left to teach

A place the mind can reach

Without a sound

To a place of peace somewhere

Run by some teddy bear

Where you'll get the best of care

Tucked in for night

Where keys don't need a door

And sand's the only floor

A place where hearts can soar

In love's mystery.

ACADEMY MUSEUM OF MOTION PICTURES

Just opened in the fall of 2021, the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures celebrates the art and science of movies—past, present, and future. Its exhibitions and programs convey the magic of cinema and offer a glimpse behind the screen, illuminating the creative and collaborative process of filmmaking. In the Grand Lobby of the Saban Building, visitors are greeted by a soaring, glass walled gallery and multiscreen experience offering an introduction to the new museum. Once inside the main part of the museum, you’ll be immersed in the world of motion pictures. "Stories of Cinema" is a multifloor exhibition that connects audiences to celebratory, complex, diverse, and international stories of the people who make motion pictures and the artworks they create. A gallery devoted to The Wizard of Oz takes visitors behind the scenes of this classic movie to explore the many disciplines that brought it to life. The tour includes roundtrip deluxe motorcoach transportation, lunch at HMS Bounty, and admission to the Academy of Motion Pictures Museum. DEL MAR THOROUGHBRED HORSE RACES

Let's go to where the “surf meets the turf” at exciting Del Mar Race Track! It was back in the summer of 1937 when Bing Crosby and his Hollywood pals put the finishing touches on their getaway spot down by the sea. And it hardly took any time at all for a tradition to be born and carried on, one that, to this day, echoes the relaxed idea that “nobody’s in a hurry but the horses.” In 1993, the track unveiled its fully completed $80 million reconstruction, a bit of work that allowed the past to linger among modernday amenities. The tour includes roundtrip deluxe motorcoach transportation, lunch on your own at the racetrack, and admission to the clubhouse at the Del Mar Thoroughbread Races.

When: Thursday, August 24

Time: 10:30am-8:00pm

Location: Del Mar Racetrack, 2260 Jimmy Durante Blvd, Del Mar, CA (bus leaves from the JCC)
