GARY HARTZEL PRESENTATION

There’s a wonderful line in a 1962 western movie called “The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence” where a frontier newspaper publisher says “When the legend becomes fact, print the legend.” That has happened a lot over time.

For example, was Julius Caesar born by Caesarian section? No Were Brutus and Cassius the most important conspirators in Caesar’s assassination? No Did Nero fiddle while Rome burned? No Was Cleopatra Egyptian? No

Did Europeans believe the Earth was flat in Columbus’s time? No

There have been lots of legends through the centuries that today’s common culture thinks of as facts. In truth, they were stories that grew out of misinterpretations of events, story fragments that were ignored in later telling, crafted from someone’s admiration for or enmity toward a certain person or people, some were just wishful thinking: “it should have happened that way.” But when the legend is more colorful, more exciting, or more useful than the fact, the legend can stick in the mind, be accepted as fact and treated as fact. “When the legend becomes fact, print the legend.”

Spend a little time with Gary Hartzell and have some fun investigating a few things that you didn’t even know that you didn’t know.

Travel Series

National Parks with Jackie

National parks offer extraordinary experiences; it’s not always possible to get to a park. Take a virtual tour with us and see the glory, hear nature sounds, discuss the journey.

Setting the backdrop for the bustling city below, Mount Rainier sits imposingly on the horizon. It calls to all those seeking the challenge of the climb, the solitude of the woods, the escape from streets and roads. It was once an active volcano that last erupted approximately 150 years ago. At a height of 14,410 feet, Mount Rainier is the highest volcanic peak in the contiguous United States. Visible throughout the region, Mount Rainier shapes the physical environment, inspires the human experience, and defines the identity of the Pacific Northwest. POEMS FROM THE POETRY CIRCLE

The sun awakens

One by one the stars Get swallowed up by light, The sky clothed in darkness Slowly awakens. The white clouds drifting by Turn pink, then vermilion Soon the golden glow of sunlight peeks out from dark hills

Then a riot of color The sun has done it again The sky, the clouds, the sea all come alive

Turning to a golden light

The New Manhattan Beach Community Center

We are dedicated to raising funds to build a new Community Center in downtown Manhattan Beach at the site of the current Scout House. Built by volunteers in 1952, the existing 2,300 square foot Scout House is at the end of its useful life and can no longer meet the needs of our community. Our vision is a two-story, 7,000 square foot facility with multiple meeting rooms, a commercial kitchen, and plenty of storage. The outdoor courtyard will expand the usable space and will feature amphitheater-style seating, a repit, and a BBQ area.

We invite you to become a permanent part of this exciting project by purchasing a commemorative brick to be incorporated in the courtyard of the new building. The bricks may be personalized with names, dates, and special messages. Honor your family; remember a loved one; commemorate a special occasion; or simply make a lasting connection to this amazing community center.

Scouting Families: Honor an Eagle Scout or Gold Award Girl Scout with a brick and it will be placed in a special designated area. We highly recommend that you include the Eagle Scout or Gold Award clip art on your brick. Please check the box under Donor Information if you are honoring an Eagle Scout or Gold Award Girl Scout.
