National Parks with Jackie

National parks offer extraordinary experiences; it’s not always possible to get to a park. Take a virtual tour with us and see the glory, hear nature sounds, discuss the journey.

Joshua Tree is our closest National Park. One and a half hours drive, east of Los Angeles and north of Palm Springs. It is a special habitat of the Joshua tree for which the park is named. It is famed for its incredible rock formations.

Two distinct desert ecosystems, the Mojave and the Colorado, come together in Joshua Tree National Park. A fascinating variety of plants and animals make their homes in a land sculpted by strong winds and occasional torrents of rain. Dark night skies, a rich cultural history, and surreal geologic features add to the wonder of this vast wilderness in southern California.

Join us as we explore the history, people, and landscape of Joshua Tree National Park!

POEMS FROM THE POETRY CIRCLE

Twisted bark

M. Caponi

Bark twist. I see you. On my daily walk, ascending the hill, 200 steps, plunging downwards three blocks of concrete, to the golden powder by the ocean.

Bark twist, you are. By the side of the old wooden stairs. Gray, brittle odd shape husk as the back of two legs, chest and head buried in the soil, where we spread your ashes, white fine dust.

Bark twist, bends. On the land where my sons and I scattered you. So much white powder. An urn full dispersed under the canopy of deep rooted ancient trees.

Bark twist, shaped. The weather-beaten wood molded like a yoga down dog reflecting sunlight. You didn’t like yoga, you didn’t like to exercise, but you would meditate.

Bark twist, in between wild yellow flowers exploding after the rains. I imagine your soul rising, giving me a sign, after so many years still alive.

ACTING OUT AGAIN SHOWCASE

The Acting Out Again Joslyn Players will perform their showcase on Sunday, February 26 at 2:00pm at Joslyn. The theme is "Let the Good Times Roll". Everyone needs to have some joy and laughter in their life now! It's been a hard year still dealing with covid and other problems that caused the delay of the showcase almost 1-1/2 years! There are 24 acts of monologues, scenes, jokes and musical numbers to enjoy. The showcase will be a combination of live acts and virtual pre-recorded acts shown on the screen. The last showcase in August 2021 was done entirely by zoom recording each act! Although the actors use Readers' Theatre techniques (having their scripts available), many of the actors have memorized their lines. The group is all seniors from ages 52-87 and they had as much fun putting this together as they hope you do watching it. So come one, come all, and "Let the Good Times Roll!"

Please note there are some mature themes and language in the show. We look forward to seeing you there!
