HOLIDAY FIRE PREVENTION STRATEGIES
Fire safety is more important during the holiday season than at any other time of the year. This is when house fires are the most frequent, costly and deadly. FEMA reports that December is the peak time of year for home candle fires. Additionally, it’s easier for fires to start in the kitchen because a cook can become distracted by everything that’s going on. Join Susie Contreras, Fire Inspector with Manhattan Beach Fire Department to learn some fire prevention tips. Free smoke detectors will also be available for eligible MB residents attending the presentation.

National Parks with Jackie
National parks offer extraordinary experiences; it’s not always possible to get to a park. Take a virtual tour with us and see the glory, hear nature sounds, discuss the journey.
Setting the backdrop for the bustling city below, Mount Rainier sits imposingly on the horizon. It calls to all those seeking the challenge of the climb, the solitude of the woods, the escape from streets and roads. It was once an active volcano that last erupted approximately 150 years ago. At a height of 14,410 feet, Mount Rainier is the highest volcanic peak in the contiguous United States. Visible throughout the region, Mount Rainier shapes the physical environment, inspires the human experience, and defines the identity of the Pacific Northwest. Nearly two million visitors a year come to Mount Rainier National Park, one of our oldest national parks. making it one of the most visited national parks.

POEMS FROM THE POETRY CIRCLE
Contrail by Bob PerkinsA jet fuel paper cut on the sundown sky, it looks clean, shines white, then bleeds out, bubbles, scabs, raises proud flesh, and dissipates, leaving its transparent carbon scar, one of thousands carved this day.
A slightly different version of "Contrail" was first published in Canary, Fall, 2015.

Blankets of Love South Bay (BOL-SB) was formed in July of 2016 to memorialize the passing of Justin Strand with the goal to increase awareness of the dangers of drug use and addiction. The purpose of BOL-SB is to create, through knitting and crocheting, baby blankets for families in need in the LA area. Today, BOL-SB boasts some 35+ members and 4,000 blankets made and donated thus far.
We encourage you to visit us at Joslyn Center in Manhattan Beach on Thursdays from 2-4 pm and to visit www.blanketsoflovesouthbay.com or email Founder, Cyndi Strand at blanketsoflovesouthbay@gmail.com, to gather more information. All are welcome! Bring your yarn and supplies and join us!

The Skechers Manhattan Beach Holiday Fireworks are expected to go forward, rain or shine, on Sunday. For more information on the schedule of events, please visit the Holiday Fireworks website or email Pete Moffett Productions. Please note: Blankets will be allowed on Manhattan Beach Boulevard sometime between 2:30 PM and 4:30 PM AFTER public safety determines that it is safe to enter the streets. Unaccompanied blankets will be removed. For full details, please visit the Skechers Manhattan Beach Fireworks website.
Please use the beach for seating, as there will be limited seating on Manhattan Beach Boulevard. Additionally, this event draws a very large crowd, which requires closing streets and rerouting traffic in and around the Downtown area. For more information on the street closures, please see below.
