April Discussion: Elwood Curtis has taken the words of Dr Martin Luther King to heart: he is as good as anyone. Abandoned by his parents, brought up by his loving, strict and clear-sighted grandmother, Elwood is about to enroll in the local black college. But given the time and the place, one innocent mistake is enough to destroy his future, and so Elwood arrives at The Nickel Academy, which claims to provide 'physical, intellectual and moral training' which will equip its inmates to become 'honorable and honest men'.In reality, the Nickel Academy is a chamber of horrors, where physical, emotional and sexual abuse is rife, where corrupt officials and tradesmen do a brisk trade in supplies intended for the school, and where any boy who resists is likely to disappear 'out back'.

GALLERY TOUR - Let Me Fix You a Plate

In Let Me Fix You a Plate, Keith Magruder invites us to gather around the table—not just for a meal, but for a conversation about history, memory, and the power of storytelling. Inspired by the lessons passed down from his grandmother—stories often absent from mainstream history—Magruder reflects on the ways knowledge is shared within families and communities.

Central to this exhibition is the dining table, a domestic space where food becomes a metaphor for culture, heritage, and the resilience of Black communities. Magruder considers Manhattan Beach’s own history through the lens of Bruce’s Beach, a once-thriving Black-owned resort seized from the Bruce family in the 1920s. This exhibition serves as both a celebration of Black prosperity and a meditation on the Black Renaissance—honoring the past while envisioning a future of renewal and success.

When: Wednesday, April 30

Time: 3:00pm-4:00pm

Location: Manhattan Beach Art Center, 1560 Manhattan Beach Blvd

Cost: Free. Guided gallery tour and craft. Starting April 1st at 9am, Manhattan Beach residents can register by calling 310-802-5430. Non-residents can call on April 3rd to register for this event.

When literary editor Alice Murphy meets a young soldier just home from World War II, he awakens her longing for the child she once lost. Haunted by their unique connection, Alice sets out on a journey to understand her past—and what she finds has the power to transform both of their lives.
